  • After a long period of searching I finally decided to buy this CNC 6040 Router. There are many good options with specific pros and cons, but in the end the(unbeatable) price/quality ratio of the CNC 6040 Router was for me the deciding factor.

    The machine was purchased on ebay.uk and send from Germany to the Netherlands for £ 50. In two separate delivery’s I received the CNC 6040 Router within 5 days. The Chinese manufactures did an excellent job packaging the machine. Everything was protected by thick foam. All the moving parts where nicely greased up and the frame was protected with a anti corrosion substance.
    Assembling the CNC 6040 Router can be done within an hour. Just a couple of bolts and some plug and play cables and you’re done. The overall build quality of the machine is pretty good. The base and gantry are very heavy.
    Getting the CNC 6040 Router to work and making the first projects in this video took me a good 10 hours of study. I have a lot experience whit 3D printing and CAD designing so that gave me a big advantage. Understanding the Mach3 software, the different coordinate systems and generating g code from a CAD file can be a steep learning curve for someone without any technical experience.
    After working with the CNC 6040 Router for a couple hours I can say I am happy with my investment. The only thing I don’t like is the aluminium extruded bed. This bed is not flat at all, so that has to be upgraded in the future.

    Just purchased one of these FANTASTIC value GBP 864 from ebay. Very useful video. I do not know why mankind always misses out steps in road sign directions and in set up videos. There are 6 large black M5 screws for the gantry which go in underneath which have no nuts because they go into tapped holes. There are 4 smaller M5 screws for the gantry which go in from the side which have no nuts. The ali table plates are screwed in by smaller black screws which need to be jiggled into place. The ali bed slats are not always flat with respect to each other at their outer edges. So you may have to get out a screwdriver and lift up a slat slightly or get a rubber mallet and a block 10mm wide and bang the slat down a bit until it is flush with its neighbour. Do not worry, if you are careful , the bed can be made flat. It is OK in the middle. It can be out by 0.5mm at the edges which is not much good with a machine which is supposed to accurate to 0.1mm or better. Look at the edges of the slat and see whether it is bent upwards or squished downwards and get out a screw driver to lever it up or the mallet and block to bang it down. Screw the caterpillar into the gantry at the side under the stepper motor. The 4 leads to be plugged into the control box are ENGRAVED SPINDLE, X, Y, Z. Look out for the engraving and you will not mix them up! 5 leads if you have a 4 axis machine. EU30/M6 tee/vee sockets are a good idea

    I have purchased two of these machines. The 1st was for work where we make aircraft parts (3-axis parallel) and then months later for at home for myself (4-axis USB). Both are great but I would recommend the parallel over the USB. Also the wiring is HORRIBLE; we had to replace ALL the wiring on the parallel one, and then installed a Gecko G540. My USB at home works fine. A dust boot for a vacuum is highly necessary. I put a piece of 0.75" MDF down on top of the aluminum bed and then fly cut it level.

    3:56 Is there a coolant feed to the system? Didn't see the purpose of it in your vid. I'd be using it to cut aluminum mostly.
    They have a model on Amazon that mention and shows (in the pics) a spindle for a 4th axis. Oddly, they show another on Amazon at the same price, but none of the pics show the bed-mounted spindle for the 4th axis. Did yours come with that?

    I bought the same machine, but it was extremely poor designed and broken as well. I sent it back to the seller for full refund. The whole process took weeks before I got the money back. Then I bought another 6040cnc with just shorter Z travel. Not rocking as bad as the previous one, but had a huge backlash and blow fuses since connected to power supply. After partial refund I manage to fix it by myself, then I found that the machine is not working with mach3 software. Just the crappy planet cnc which don't understand basic G codes and there is no postprocessor for it. Due upgrading the stepper motor controller I found that the spindle controller wasn't connected to control board at all. Only manual operating was possible. Those above are just some issues I had with this machine. If I can advise someone: don't buy it, just build your own machine. For the same price you can have much better machine. If you put a little bit more on top of that you can build machine able to work on hard metal.

    • @MBcreates
      @MBcreates  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a pity to have such a bad experience. My 6040 still works perfectly. Many people
      seem to have problems with the mach3 version that comes with the machine. You
      can try to get the original. The spindle controller of most machines only works
      in manual mode. I think that it’s possible to connected it someway, I haven’t
      did any research on how to do it, yet.

      Many 6040 CNC machines are shipped with a few years old hacked PlanetCNC version and with counterfeit controllers. PlanetCNC offers controller that fits into box and new software (PlanetCNC TNG). I am using their controler with Autodesk Fusion 360 mach3 postprocessor and I don't have any problems with G code.

      @@MBcreates Your machine is like the first one I've ordered and must have the same issue on y axis. The 2 bearings on each side of the long sliders/rails are located too close each other. You can improove it by fitting them as far from each other as possible. In this case a few cm will make big difference.

    • @dlugas251
      @dlugas251 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cncchips4574 I saw the link and sems like you did a good job. Your original controller was even newer than mine. Mine doesn't have usb at all. I had parallel to usb cable which only work with planet cnc, the first version only. I ended up buying 2MHz usb mach3 controller (for over 120GBP) and stepper drivers (12GBP or so for each axis). I'm planning to upgrade the original long rails with something more rigid, to stop the machine rocking so badly. Of course with the new chinese controller I have new issues. Within mach3 when I press pg up, pg dn, or arrow keys the axes travel then stops when I release the buttons, but if I press them quickly then release, the axes don't stop until the tool hit something. The seller provided me a new driver, but I haven't got a time to check it yet. I hope your machine is working better than mine.

      So sorry. The question is regarding your another video named "cnc 6040 router accuracy vs speed testing". In that video, you used a dial indicator to test the movement distance in certain axis. I am curious how did you align the probe of the indicator with the axis of movement since misalignment will cause the difference with the indicated length and the real movement distance. Sorry for the confusion.

      No worries. I used a small spirit level that I placed on the flat backside of the dial indicator. It isn't 100 percent accurate of course, but for a cheap budget machine it worked well enough.

      Pas wel even op. Er zijn best wat ruw kantjes aan. De aluminium tafel bv is niet echt rigide, je kan ze makkelijk induwen tot wel enkele mm gewoon met de hand. Bij hout en plastic nog te doen, bij aluminium frezen echter wel een probleem. De controllers zelf zijn ook voor verbetering vatbaar. De inverter/vfd (om de spindle aan te drijven) die er inzit is ook potentieel een beetje problematisch. Er worden ronde assen gebruikt en geen lineaire rails... Etc.
      Nogmaals, het zijn zeer bruikbare machines, maar je moet realistisch blijven over de mogelijkheden en veel hangt af van wat je wil doen.

    Did you had any problems with the VFD controler? In all the forums it is written that you have to change the settings and if not the spindle could burn out.
    Did you changed any setting on VFD?

    How ridged are these machines? The original 6040 were quite flimsy?

    • @MBcreates
      @MBcreates  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For engraving: PerfectFor cutting wood: OKFor cutting Aluminium: insufficient
      The new design (that I have) has a solid 15mm aluminium frame. It is way heavier and rigidit than you would expect. The design flaw (read cost saving decision) is in the gantry. The side legs are 15 mm solid aluminium just like the base. But instead of using the same 15mm aluminium plate as support between the legs, they used the linear rail. So the legs are only joined by the unsupported rail. This results in a less rigid gantry and flexing when put under load. In the future I would like to upgrade the machine with this missing chunk of aluminium and ofcourse the support rail.
