That program doesn't have trochoidal cutpaths? PixelCNC has trochoidal milling for both 2D and 2.5D. I suppose as long as your machine is rigid it's not a big deal to use old fashioned offset milling. I've found that trochoidal milling lets me really ramp up the speed on my CNC router for hogging stuff out. It blew my mind how fast I could make it go!

@@laserfalcon Servomotors aren't like stepper motors - they keep track of exactly how much they've moved using something called an encoder. For example, a piece of equipment inside the motor shines a light on a rotating part of the motor with small reflective marks on it, giving a signal when it get some reflected light back. This allows it to track how much the motor shaft has rotated since it last measured a reflection, and with some simple arithmetic, how much real-world distance a fixed point on the motor shaft has traveled (as if you'd wound a piece of string around it while it was running and measured the string). That's an example of an _optical incremental rotary encoder_ - i.e. it uses light, counts how many rotational marks it has seen, and allows you to determine how much the motor has rotated. It can then feed this data back to a system controlling the motors (a so-called _closed loop_ system). This allows you to know, within reasonable error margins, how much the motor has moved, which stepper motors cannot do. Steppers can miss steps under heavy loads or because of electrical faults and the control system would have no idea it happened. Effects like that add up to inaccuracy in every motor-controlled axis, which is unacceptable in industrial settings. For this reason, low-end stepper-driven CNC machines often have limit sensors on the axes and sometimes also have (usually optical or magnetic) encoders of a different sort installed along their axes of travel called _linear encoders_ (e.g. glass linear encoders, a piece of glass with marks on it that are counted by a laser), because you can make no assumptions about how much the motor shaft has rotated based on its step count. This is why basic stepper systems are called _open loop_ systems, because there is no feedback. Adding an encoder to them creates a closed loop, but without the extra feedback and precision of servomotors. Expensive servomotors might also have a zero-finding capability built into them, so if you cut the power and turn it back on, they know what position they're in already. Incremental encoders don't ordinarily allow for this, because all they do is count ('increment') how much they've rotated since the encoder was turned on. They are much cheaper and simpler. The motors themselves, though, are not as complicated as stepper motors because they don't need to advance in discrete steps to help the controller. The commenter here is implying that you would probably want a closed-loop servomotor setup to make something this big and intricate, because there's so much scope for slop and errors to ruin the workpiece. Then again, it's only wood. If it was a big piece for a rocket or an aircraft that required micron repeatability, it absolutely would be a closed-loop servo system running that gantry.
