We wouldn't get this fantastic cast then. Also I'm very glad I got to see this movie as a kid, my friends all showed me it at a party we had - they had great taste. It was essential to my childhood lol. We had all the shitty batman movies made at this point already, that's a lot of what they were making fun of imo. This was way before Dark Knight. And way before all the terrible modern Hollywood movies, so you have a point. I would definitely watch a sequel, rip Paul Reubens, though. Such a classic.
Gotta hand it to the Shoveler, he took on 5 disco boys single handedly and won. Especially considering the three of them got their asses kicked by them earlier on in the movie. The Shoveler is such an underrated character.
I say without a single atom of irony that the Shoveler taking on the Disco boys is one of the best fight scenes to be put on film. Hilarious, visually engaging, rhythmic, colorful and tells a tiny story of it's own. Kinka Usher only directed one movie because he didn't need to make another.
No everybody HATED his film so he went back to commercials. I don’t say that to put the guy down. I think he was/is the BEST director of superhero films. There are so many little things in this movie that hit the nail right on the head. ( And many big things too.) It looks like they are showing this a little more often now and maybe people will see it and see what I and a few others have seen since it hit the theaters. I wish we could get Mr. Usher back but I hope he is happy where he is.
“Maybe you should put some shorts on or something if you wanna keep fighting evil today 🤷♀️” I love that line so much! Janeane Garofalo is a national treasure.
This was and still is one of the best superhero movies. Shout-out to everyone involved in making this movie for creating a team of superheroes who weren't overpowered and that consisted of working class citizens.
Should have been at least a cult classic - but it was mis-marketed by the studio. It got lousy audience exit ratings. But not from me! I loved it and still do!
This film had so much done right that I find it hard to believe that it didn’t do better. Casting- From an Academy Award winning villain to a group of comedians, a perfect group. And the one masterful bit, William H. Macy as the Shoveler. Did you know that part was supposed to be played by Ving Rhames? Macy stepped in and the director wisely kept the wife, so we had an interracial thing. Oh and the criminals, another masterful group. The Not So Goodie Mob - Played by the rap group The Goodie Mob. The Frat Boys - Their president was Michael Bay. Captain Amazing’s publicist was Magician Ricky Jay. The writing was just so killer. The Shoveler falling down an elevator shaft, onto some bullets… All of the Sphinx’s “sayings.” I could go on forever but the one thing I loved was how they played with time, I can’t even explain it but if you are reading this you surely get it. Just a fine film that nobody ever saw. I’m serious! I would put this film up against Deadpool or Guardians Of The Galaxy for sheer funny. Edit: And the song that was in so many movies “All Star” by Smash Mouth was used in Mystery Men FIRST, not Shrek. It beat Shrek by two years.
What if I told you that the Mystery Men movie is an allegorical masterpiece? Captain Amazing represents America. The Red-Eyes represent Communism. Casanova-Frankenstein represents the Vatican. Tony C and Tony P represent Catholics & Protestants. Disco represents religion. The Shoveler represents the Working Class. The Bowlers Daughter represents Feminism...(which has issues with the patriarchy). Mr. Furious represents angry youth. Casanovas gangs represent the seven deadly sins. The Blue Rajah represents the third world...and he's the one who accidentally kills Captain Amazing by pulling the TWIN TOGGLES which represent the twin towers. The time on the Big clock in the Disco Room is set to 1:19...which is 9-11 backwards. There's even more...but watch the movie again and look for the hidden symbology. It's a greater movie than anyone really knows.

The funny thing is using shovels in combat *is* something that actual soldiers are trained to do. It's why one side of the military-issued shovel is serrated. Even a regular shovel can outright *decapitate* someone with enough strength and precise aim.
Some of the settings, like the area around the diner, are worthy of Blade Runner. Not including the interior design imitating the Gaudi house in Barcelona...

The Shoveler put in work. He took on the Disco Brothers by himself.
