This was very funny, accurate and informative. Like a "How to be a Swede for dummies!" manual. :)
A small Note though. Laundry room configurations can vary alot depending on cities and landlords. But there is a common ... thread, on how it works and looks. Some features may be lacking, while other places still have classic features like "Torkrum" (Drying room) and "Mangel" (Mangle - a thing to squese water out of cloth). They also used to have a "Strykbräda" (Ironing Board), but its less common to find them today (in my experience).
The booking system varies alot to, but most bigger towns and cities use some digital version, accessable from a terminal like in this video, and sometimes via an app or online. But other places still uses older analog systems, with keys and locks. Some places may even still use a regular schedule paper and penn (where you write up your name on the time you want to wash).
    Take care.
    Cheers.

Lots of people have washing machines and dryers in their apartements in Sweden (I am one of them) , sometimes it's part of the apartement and sometimes you have to buy them yourself however you still always have access to a communal laundry room. In the laundry room you have access to several washing mashines, dryers, dryer rooms and a mangle, you can usually do all your laundry in one load and you don't have to pay for the electricity you use.
We also often have access to another laundry room created just for carpets mattress pads, sofa cushions etc
Also in my building the laundry room is not in the basement, we access it from the outside next to our doorway.

I fail to understand why can't they have washing machine inside the house. Sure its cheaper to have common area for that, but so as common tv room, common video game room, common bathroom, common kitchen. Why choose only the laundry? Seriously makes no sense. Its not a social activity and takes a lot of time just waiting.

Hej Douglas! Yes, we can certainly see why it may be jarring for people to understand, especially in our present day. However, according to this really fascinating listen from Radio Sweden, communal laundry facilities were introduced in the 1920s and 1930s, and in that era were seen as an important staple for access: everyone should have somewhere safe to live, and be able to support themselves healthily - which included having the guarantee of somewhere to wash their clothes conveniently. If you want to listen more to their report on this, I'd check out their programme here: sverigesradio.se/artikel/6906807 / Emma, Study in Sweden

In some apartment buildings there are rules if it is allowed to have a washing machine in the apartment. There are associations and landlords who have said no to having a washing machine in apartments. One motivation is water damage that can occur and that neighbors can suffer from it.

You pay for the right to use it with your rent

Communal laundry rooms are one thing which is really strange for me. I see a smaller number of apartments with washing machines, even relatively big ones. Here in Russia we have washing machines in almost every apartment and no laundry rooms. Despite people in Russia are usually much, much more poor than people in Sweden. I'm not trying to say that the Swedish approach is bad, I'm just trying to figure out the key idea behind the popularity of the laundry rooms.

The laundry room is a big deal. Not long ago the laundry room was ranked as the place where people fighting or brawl the most. A study showed that every sixth tenant has got into fight there. If you keep your time and clean after you, you should be fine :)

For me its a qestion of money! It cost a lot to buy machines, it also cost a lot to let them run, especially the driers cost a lot in energy. Its also nice to not have to fit in 2 gigantic machines in a little apartment. Often the come extra with the drykabinett or sometimes even with a hole rom as a dryer you can hang your clodes to dry whit a big fan that blowing hot air on the clothes. Ofter there is a mangle to if you like to flatten things.
One of the best parks is that i finish all the loundry Downey in the actuelly laundryroom so when a come back to my apartment I can just put the clothes straigt where they belong and not in a big pile of unfolded mess, witch usally happens fore me when i've had a my own waching-machine.
Sorry if I have misspelled something, I've

Does no one live in their own house with their own washer and dryer in Sweden? This is the same situation in the US for many apartment residents, but laundry is much less of a big deal when you live in a single family home. Also this doesn't really help the idealized vision so many Americans have of living in a Nordic Utopia. Looks like laundry is a big deal for city dwellers, no matter what country you're from!

    • @lindenpeters2601

@Ajgs Ktovet This is great information to know! It's common to have laundry rooms in apartment buildings in the US, too! Thanks for your perspective! That is interesting you say wash day was Saturday. I have heard historically in the US it was Monday. Bath night was always Saturday, but laundry day was Monday.

@@StudyinSwedenOfficial I’ll pass. Nah like haha. Where’s the fun in dragging all the washing down when you can easily do it in the comfort of your own home? I do washing about 4-5 times a week and about 2-4 loads on they days.
Would never have my stuff in a laundry room that people share like. Can’t have other people’s scent over my own. It’s personal reasons for me. Sounds like fun but just not for me.
Plus I live in Scotland we don’t have basements haha. There are some flats round me that has that option for communal my cousin has it but it’s not a basement. Actually tbh no idea what it looks like never been down there. They have keys for that so getting locked in or out doesn’t happen.
But for me needs to be in my own home.

Scent has never been a problem personally, as in I've never notice anyone's scent on my stuff. Ofc most people that don't really worry about their living expenses has washing machines etc in their own home in Sweden.
