    We spent over $1000 on tests to be told by our Vet that we should go and get other tests done, specifically an MRI or CAT scan after he saw a mass by our dogs kidney on his ultrasound.
    He said that it looked like cancer, and by doing another $1000 of tests, we could know how bad it was and what the options would be for treatment. He said it was likely that
    it would be another $10k-12k for surgery and chemotherapy. The mass is by an artery and he did say there would be risks to the surgery.
    At this point, we have decided to provide palliative care and keep him as comfortable as we can at home. But a part of me wonders, if there is any chance of this being a non malignant tumor
    that could be removed, could we extend his life? We can't keep hemmoraging money but we love this dog and hate to lose him.
    A friend of mine went through this same thing with his cat, spent $10k on surgery and chemo and extended his cat's life only 5 months.

      I dont want to sound like a moron Im just curious. Wouldnt you do everything in your power to extend the life of a loved one (human) by 5months?

    I have a pet credit card, I have already spent 20 grand on it. 3 surgery's and tons of medications later. Pet ownership is really just for the well off or rich. Most likely if your not, then the dog or cat is probably suffering.

      I definitely sympathize with this way of thinking Harry. Costs can definitely climb to huge levels if a pet who is unwell or needs surgery, especially if you want/are able to afford the absolute best options available. This is not affordable for a lot of (most) people, and that is where either insurance has a lot of value or where working through other lower cost options comes into play. While anything that is not the absolute best means that corners may need to be cut so-to-speak, in a lot of cases these will still result in a good standard of care with a reasonable chance of a successful outcome. Clearly this does depend on the exact condition present though.

      Not really I’m 13 and my parents don’t pay the vet bills you just have to learn to use money. But either way I don’t pay bills or buy groceries so I have nothing else to pay for but my dog

      13 yrs old, wait till you get older and have a mortgage, car payment among other expenses. All I have to say to you is, do the smart thing, take as many college credits as you can in school and get to working as soon as possible. The earlier you start saving, the better off your life will be. I started out this way.

      I disagree, not necessarily, I think it just depends on luck of the draw. I have known people that have had dogs with no problems whatsoever until their really old. Then theres dog with people that have insurance that keep getting sick and they keep paying and paying one thing after the other. It just depends on the alot of factors.
      There are strays that have it worse out there. So you adopting one with no insurance will be better off to begin with then where it came from just saying. Iv'e heard of a stray dog eating rocks because they could find food consitantly from a person that just adopted a dog. I also of a strat cat eating plastic bags. Trust me, there better off with someone with no insurance then out there all alone with no food etc.

    Bruh this is why I dropped out of vet school. I learned VERY QUICKLY that even the vet biz is ruled by money. I know treatments, procedures ,and exams aren't free. But as an animal lover I would give poor pet owners my price of each procedure. Instead of taking profits I would just literally break even on certain cases.i would 100 percent for sure NEVER EVER turn down a hurt animal because their humans cant afford treatment. Maybe that'd end up screwing me in the long run but at least I know I'm dying and going to heaven.

      So vets aren’t allowed to earn money to put food on their family’s table? If a clinic isn’t making money then it will close and then no animals will get any care

    • @chloesmith5142
      @chloesmith5142 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a vet student, it’s comments like these that really get on my nerves. Vets don’t earn anywhere near as much money as they should. It seems to be the only profession where you are expected to work for free, and if you don’t then you “don’t care” or are “playing with people’s emotions”. At the end of the day, a vet is a business not a charity, and the staff deserve to be paid after putting themselves through 5+ years of vet school. If people are struggling to fund treatment, then there are charities or plans that can help.

    My dachshund needs surgery, he has a tumor in his spleen. Its 8k or might be more if he needs a transfusion. When I got my dog I could afford his care, but I'm now unexpectedly am raising 2 grandchildren now and I don't have 10k, I already spent 2k for him to be diagnosed. They don't know if its cancer until they remove it. There's a 50-50 chance its cancer and if it is he'll only have 3-6 months to live, if not cancerous he should be fine. I'm crushed.

    Not sure there (and it may be similar to another option you mentioned), but in the US, we have something called Care Credit that can help you pay for a bill over time in a way that may be similar to with a credit card bill, but I don't think it doesn't involves any interest.
    The catch is it doesn't seem to be available until a bill costs $200+ though I think the veterinary practice can determine those finer details for them.

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for adding this Lilia. We have something similar over here. I don't know about credit care in particular but the one I know charges a "set-up" fee rather than interest. It's pretty much the same thing just worded differently. Any organization lending money, especially short-term loans, will end up charging a pretty high % interest - however it's worded. Whenever you take any loans like this or spend on a credit card etc it's vital that you know you will be able to afford the repayments. Unfortunately, a lot of people aren't that financially literate and can end up really struggling after taking on debt. I'm a big believer that people should treat based on what they can afford rather than what they wish they could afford and are able to borrow, if that makes sense.

    Thank you for your video on paying for vet bills. I tried to find vet help in my area but they no longer exists. I have a female cat, she has been spayed. She has started in the last month of peeing on the furniture and she will even lay next to me of even get in my lap and pee on me. I would like to find out why she is doing this but at the same time I don't want to give my cat away because I can't afford a visit to the vet. My cats keep me going.

      Where i live i cant even find a vet that WILL see my pets...they all say were too full and cant help...my dog got a bladder blockage and could pee and NO one would see him even tho he was SCREAMING in the background and they would all say sorry there’s nothing we can do were over booked already...i had to take him 3 hours away and by the time I found them his bladder had ruptured and his heart stopped 3 times so I HATE when i hear ppl say...take your pet to the vet rather then help them at home...MAKE SURE THATS AN OPTION AND THAT YOU HAVE A VET YOU CAN CALL when needed. I couldnt even find any one that would put a pet down in need ands we had to resort to euthenzing at home our selves with co2 for goodness sakes.

    Dogs are carnivores. Stop feeding them carb-laden, heavily processed "food" & cutting dramatically down on carbs is the single most important thing you can do to reduce the need for medical care. True for dogs, cats & humans.

      @@JUDXTS same thing goes for cats, cats aren't vegans either, they are carnivores and I don't feed my cat vegan food, she only eats regular cat food such as nine lives, cat chow, meow mix, and her favorite is Friskies seafood sensation, plus in moderation I feed her canned cat food mixed with dry cat food. She's happy with what I feed her.I don't buy her blue wilderness cat because it's expensive.
