Good choice, good price and a lovely combination of holes case with solid end links. Well done Ted, for taking advice from the main man ! More of this content please Austin. 👍🏼
The Pepsi issue is due to the blue color. The blue doesn’t cover the red well enough during the sintering process. Because it doesn’t bind as well, as you say, it can break during service. The black works which is why we see it on all the other GMTs.
I went to Nakano Broadway on March 13th as well and met you! Thanks for taking a few minutes to chat and recommend places to check. I was looking for a Yacht Master and ended up getting one from Watchnian. It was great meeting you. Keep up the good work!
I am heading to Japan in September, looking to buy my first Rolex as well. Either a gmt or an explorer 2 polar dial. Ultimate goal would be something from 1994 but open to find the best of price and condition. I would love to connect if that fit your schedule. Or any advice would be amazing! Thanks!
Super Watch. Is ist a Problem to Switch the bezel often and how to get an Original Coke bezel, in Addition to the all black? Is ist possible to Switch ist on your Own?
It depends on the country, but certain Rolex Service Centers will allow you to swap out bezel inserts. Once you have other inserts, you can switch them yourself, but I don't recommend it. The play of the bezel has a certain feeling when you rotate it, and if you don't put it on just right it feels off.
Just bought an all black 16710 Y serial from Nakano on my recent trip! Love it. Was able to narrow down a good quality version with full set, light polishing, holes case! thanks to you Austin!
Correct on the DJ dials….the Palm Motif and the Fluted Motif will be discontinued. I have been informed by my AD nearly a month ago as I am on the waitlist for both. They will offer me an elevated position on a new dial if I like one.
Hey mr austin i just want say thank you because of your video i bought one of the collection from your video 😊😊 because i believe all watch from your video is real
Hey man, good to hear from you! No, I haven't done a live stream in ages. But new watches are one they way come Watches and Wonders, so maybe around then.
@@watchsymposium Awesome I'll keep an eye on your channel and I'll do some research about new stuff to get up to date in the meantime. Will definitely join your stream like in the old days .
Just stumbled upon your channel.. You are the first person to point out (or recognize) that the "batman" GMT was never meant to be. You are right, it absolutely was Not. It was only intended to demonstrate that a ceramic Pepsi was in the works. But that news alone made just the batman a hit, and nowadays guys don't know why just that it still has that hype. I'd love to share with you my understanding of the original Pepsi development for Pan AM, but this is not the place. All that said, I could see Rolex leaving the Batman in the collection because it sells, and it's fewer Pepsis they need to distribute. The notoriety of the Pepsi really helps Rolex as a brand in general, with only perhaps the Daytona helping them equally. Good explanation on the Batman 👍👍cheers ~
If a Black and Red GMT is coming it would make sense the supply of the Pepsi slows or dries up for a bit as the base colour for both bezels is Red. Rolex will need all the Red bezels they can get their hands on to build inventory of the ‘coke’ ready for its release.
Whilst initially happy with his purchase, I sense Ted will wish he had opted for a Coke or Pepsi GMT. I've never really seen the point in an LN bezel. The day night split is part of the functionality, right? I love my 2001 Coke on Oyster. A keeper.
I'm sure that, in time, he'll want to add the other inserts, and maybe a Jubilee bracelet as well. Being able to do that is one of the best aspects of having a 16710. What I like about the bicolored bezel inserts is, besides the bit of color, that the color transitions can be used to time 15 minute intervals in a way the at the All-black doesn't allow. But, I do love the toned down aesthetic of the All-black. Whenever I think I've settled on a favorite insert my feeling changes to the extent that I can't commit to one. I've got Coke inserts on mine at the moment, but as of late I've been fiending for that anodized blue of the Pepsi!
i have a GMT 2 i bought in 2000. Unfortunately I no longer have the box or the serial number cards. But I do have the payment receipt and a letter from the shop I bought it from stating all the numbers etc. What do you think I could get for it. It does need a service, but in good condition.
I'd have to see it to give you a good estimate. But if you do have it serviced, I'd consider not getting it polished. There's a growing number of people that appreciate virgin pieces, and once a piece has hit the polishing wheel it loses something that can never be recovered.
I just got back from Japan with the yen so weak right now prices were incredible! I picked up my first Daytona for a screaming deal! Akihabara was the best for watches!
Great to see you back in the wild at Nakano! I was visiting again (leaving tomorrow) with family and was about to pull the trigger on a watch (no, not the grail perfect fat lady) but had a super sour sales experience. Highly highly highly do not recommend Jubilee Watch in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. They're having a closing out sale and the guy just didn't want to deal with an English speaker, so they can go SMD
Austin - do you do any type of in person consulting for purchases? Coming to Tokyo the week after next, looking to pick up a few items. Would love to have the expertise on hand for a few hours. Let me know.
Hello Austin , glad you are back in town. This was very interesting. There should be more potential buyers that could use your professional expertise. The market in Japan seems to offer any model that has been around. 😊😊😊
Austin nice to have you back. You got Ted a nice 16710 from Kamekichi if I'm not mistaken, looking at their distinctive price tag. Do they still charge 3% for card purchases? Great retailer but that's my only gripe.
Crazy question, I’m a fan of your channel. I plan on being in Tokyo next year in February, I have a layover for 2 days but I’m really in a Rolex Daytona, a white dial two tone will be ideal but the Steeliest are also great, how much would I be looming at price wise for a complete set?
4:38 it was never meant to be what? The blnr is preferred by a lot over the Pepsi including myself. In fact, if you check most Rolex forums and the Rolex subreddit, you'll quickly realize that it's 50/50. About half of people prefer the batman over the Pepsi. It's nowhere near as schewed as you make it out to be. That is the case at my ADs as well. The SAs tell me the batman is just as popular if not more popular at at certain ADs.
Meaning that if they could have achieved the traditional colors at the time, I'm not sure that they would have opted for the BLNR color scheme at all. My theory is that it was just the best/easiest bicolored ceramic insert that they could do. If, at that time, any ceramic color combination was possible, I'm not sure they BLNR would have ever existed. Just speculation on my part, of course. As for the desirability between the two, just check out the preowned and grey market prices for each. Sure, you have your BLNR proponents - I'm one of them! - but the BLRO goes for thousands more. The whole point of talking about this is to speculate about which, the BLNR or the BLRO, will be the first to go. If you were a betting man, which would you say?
Not all green tags have that information - it depends on the country where the AD that originally sold the watch was located. But on the tags that do have that information the color code of the insert will follow the reference number. For example an All-black would be 16710LN.
These are really great watches on the wrist that hold value and make great heirlooms. Thinness and weight is key to me, and older watches are a delight.
That's a tough choice, but I'd go with the 16710 for the reasons above. But, I really like the fact that the 16700 is 1mm thinner. You can't go wrong with either.
Which shops do you recommend in Nakano areas for GMT? I’m familiar with Kame-Kichi, Jack Road, and Watchnian in Shinjuku. Any others for fine virtually untouched pieces? TIA.
I don't recommend any particular shop, I go for the best piece at the best price. There are gems in pawnshops, and stock in stores are always changing, so I think that's a better approach.
No, they transitioned from the fat font serif inserts to the thin font sans-serif inserts during the Y serials, so this insert is period correct. It doesn't rule out that it could be a service insert, but that could be said of any 16710 from the F serials onward. For what it's worth, the green tag stated that it was born an All-black.
@@watchsymposiumi have actually checked my database and you are right the Y serial is the serial where it transitioned from fat font serif to thin font / service. So it could be either of those. I would have preferred the other one with black serif bezel insert. Serif inserts have much more charm!

Would the old Cokes go up in price or down if they release a new Coke?
which store in Nakano did you visit? thanks
is a M16710LN good for $12,980?
Unless the watch you're referring to is new ,old stock, then I would say 13k is waaaay over priced.
