Eranakulam -- Kottayam section : It was the wish of the ruler of Kochi kingdom that this rail should pass through his capital, Thripunithura. We hear stories such as the Kochi king selling the gold ornament collection of his queen to raise the huge amount needed to change alignment of the rail path so that it will pass through Thripunithura.............

Ernakulam Trivandrum railway line passing through Tripunithura was built after the princely state was merged. Long before that the Shoranur Ernakulam line was built. It was the temple jewellery that was mortgaged to raise the finance and that did not involve Tripunithura section.

From Tirur ,the railway line extended to calicut on 1888.then to kannur on 1902.kannur mangalore line opened on 1907.palakkad (erstwhile olavakkode) to palakkad town on 1898.then to pollachi on 1932.Trivandrum central came into being on 1931 nov. 4. Ernakulam to Alappuzha on 1989.then to kayamkulam on 1992.Thrissur to guruvayur on 1994.trivandrum to kanniyakumari on 1979.(there was a railway line in munnar till 1930s but was demolished by heavy rain and land slide).Shoranur to Nilambur on 1927.
