Freestyle Friday #3 :: Lift your legs while swimming in a horizontal position - push down - float

  • Today’s tip is called PDF, short for push down - float. As we saw on the second episode of freestyle Friday a lot of swimmers have a problem with the position of their torso. Our chest floats because of our lungs and our legs naturally sink, so it is common to see people swim like this. It takes a lot of unnecessary effort to swim like this.
To fix it, try this. If we want to learn how to push our chest down and and let our hips float let’s do this. Kick with a kick board but go down as if there was a bug floating there and you wanted to go under it. This is a lot harder than just pushing your chest down because with a kick board you will have double floatability on the upper part of your body, but that is the exercise. If it’s too hard do it with a pull buoy or even an empty water bottle. Remember how it feel to press down and try it while you swim. It should put your body in a better position.

It was a similar problem but completely different reason why the legs sink and thus a different solution.

    from principal of mechanics...
When swimner use hand as a support and try to gentile press water down ( as shown in vedio) imagine there is a floating in hand and try to push it down ...in this case part of body weight will transfer to hand .. Which it means center of masd moved forward and distance between bouncy force and center of weight deceased ..so swimmer at this time can get over rotation forward and be in downhill position ....
The tricky point is how make hand as a support not to push water down by hand ...becuase if swimmer strongly push water down in the case the reaction of water will push hand up and swimmer will get rotation in direction of uphill position and legs will sink ..
So try to create little pressure on hand slowely and avoid strong motion of hand down ..i explain without floating

I tried the kickboard and pullbuoy exercises, but I found them impossible to do. I actually have a hard time just jumping up and down in water about breast height and keeping going down. I just float up again :/ This is easier when starting out deeper under the water, but I must still concentrate to not float up. I must add that my kick has very little propulsion, but my body position is decent when swimming freestyle.

This is so helpfull! I'm going to try this next week. I'm still trying to learn freestyle but I find myself waking up with a sore lower back in the morning. I wonder if this will help with that as well..

Can i participate in a state level competition in my 20's? Can i have a swimming career in my 20's?

It’s true ur aerobic capacity begins to decline in your mid 20s but it’s a very gradual process. Typically older swimmers have more muscular maturity. Younger swimmers however do have less obligations thus more time for training and their brains are primed for rapid learning. The best in the world are usually late teens to early 30s. State level is certainly attainable at any age that isn’t elderly. There are plenty of masters (18+) teams and meets in the US for adults looking to compete
