Dude this was so informative. I had no idea how to get cursor to the last player on the ice. What you just told me blew my mind. This is going to make my life so much easier. I gave up on NHL 16 because of not being able to get to the last player on time and always getting break-away(ed?) on. I just picked up NHL 17 to start practicing for 18 and I'm so happy I just learned about that. Thank you so much man.
good tips, there is no wrong or right way to play. It's on the player to beat whatever comes at them. There is no consequence in the game for how someone plays, only wins and losses. The game doesn't reward the player for the best HOCKEY choices, the games rewards the player for the best NHL17 choices, which are typically having a high rated team and cheesing the f out of someone. Good video SUBSCRIBED
I've watched many how-to videos for the NHLXX game over the years and your videos are very well explained (BTW, I've just found your videos today). Part of the problem with the game is that there is no clear definitions and examples of how the strategies work. Your videos break these things down in to steps with examples to explain whats going on. Excellent! I want emphasize that I like that you are taking the game that is given to you and working with it. What I mean is if the Defense is better than you are then you let the Defense do it's thing. Same with forechecking, if the 1-3-1 is working against an opponent where you are not the 1 on the forecheck then so be it. Let the comp do what it's good at and you follow up by blocking a pass etc. There are many comments against this strategy but I'm all for it in most situations. Again, strong advise. It'll be interesting to see what NHL18 brings and what tweaks will be needed. (I'm looking forward to your NHL18 videos) I'm on PS4 and would love to play and learn from you. PSN=fawsha
I noticed under franchise mode as soon as I started wining games and got into first place the opposing teams became almost unbeatable. Is it just me or does the AI get harder the better team you are? I checked the difficulty settings to make sure I didn’t hit allstar or something, it’s till under pro.
ok...Ive watched 3 if your vids, and agree with most of your stuff, and will try the puck side defense.....however....ALL of your vids, are based on playing against a human opponant, and looking for there fuckups, and exploiting them. Im having issues defending against the CPU, as it seems it reads my stick direction, and button inputs, and skates around me, passes around me, or stops a shot because it seems to know I hit tge block button, and skates around me. How do YOU defend against Cpu? Could you make a video about that please?
hey man thanks for the feedback! iv never thought about that, but i could totally do a vid for that. Im just curious are you talking abotu playing offline, or like playing a human who is position locking?
Sleeveless Gaming I only play Franchise mode, so Im talking about that. For the last 2 years, games always end up like 9-7 or 5-3. No matter what team I play against, I can rack up the score, but so can they. The cpu always seems to a step ahead when it comes to playing D agaisnt them....even If I trap with 1-4, the puck handler will just circle back around neutral, and try again. They always almost always seem to be able to chase their dumps perfectly, cause the cpu knows where the puck is going to bounce (or thats what it seems). On offense, the cpu D will adjust to whatever Im trying to score with, so when I see it take that away, I just switch to something else. That part isnt so hard...but Id like to be able to hold on to my 7-3 lead going into the third, before the cpu score 4 in a row in 3 minutes. Thanks.
I just want to say contrary to all the hate you're getting I found this super useful as someone who didn't really know what they were doing. I think people are just mad cos comp is tough to play against.
Good video, but all you are doing is promoting the skillzone. The whole reason you might be having struggles on offense is because you aren't getting enough TOA. When you skill zone, it makes it wayyy easier for your opponent to cycle. I play heavy cycle offense, and I play wayy better against the skill zone. I play an aggressive defense and I rarely get scored on, and get many offensive breaks because of my aggressive style.
I also don't get how it's fun sitting in the slot while your Computer is doing all the work. Isn't the point of a video game to play it? Not have the game play it for you?
have a check on my scoring video, haha i promote overload and cycling before all else. TOI is a useless stat to me, as i know i can control a forward and let someone who wants to use the skill zone goals go around in circles. but i 100% will always cycle before going for a skill zone glitch goal on the rush type play.
the point of this series is to teach kids who struggle a different way to hide the things they are bad at. winning is fun, but this method isnt for everyone. My thoughts are if you want to play defense then watch a real nhl game and learn how to do it because EA defenders will be more effective than about 99% of the player base unfortunetly
Good video, I kind of get the impression that all these people who suck out because you let the ai play a bit of defense are just mad because they actually have to work for a goal and earn it. Just like the people who suck out when they go up against someone playing the trap, it's funny to me because I always thought that it's up to the attacker to score and it seems pathetic to moan that your opponent isn't making it easy for you.
I'm 31-5 for versus and I mostly like to play my own defense. AI is stupid sometimes and can't be trusted. Control the player closest to the opposition and don't commit to make the check. Like someone else said wait for the moment to poke check. Frustrates the crap out of other players :) I have not once attempted an aggressive goalie move.. I'm terrible at that!
trust the ai in the d zone and use the centerman who is supposed to rover up top when using staggared. But pressuring in the D zone is very rarely better done by a user. Youre record in versus is good though buddy, but youre playing against the bottom tier guys currently, check bck in with me when you did game 100, im curious! thanks for watching tho buddy i appreciate it.
Yeah. I struggle at times in HUT but I still feel like I play pretty good and don't allow too many goals. The only goals that get scored on me are the glitch ones.
It actually kind of worked. I keep pulling my D men out of position. When the computer controls them he couldn't get easy goals anymore and I stopped losing 9-0. Last time we played I lost 3-2 in a shootout.
ok kids... you want to learn to play defense.... don't listen to this guy. he apparently only plays against people who nhl 17 is there first hockey game, have never seen a game, and have never actually played hockey. 1st) learn to play offense and boom your done. well more to it than that but if your playing offense your not too worried about defense. i dont often play versus or that stuff but when i do its so easy to walk around people because all you go for is the big hit that is so easy to predict and avoid and then its you and the goalie and everyone knows how that works out............ backhand-forehand or forehand-backhand and then a dnf right afterwards
alright were gonna have to have a discussion here lmao. 1.) 50% of kids who play this game have never stepped on the ice, so I mean to try and teach kids how to play defense in hockey isnt really beneficial here because im not about to spend 4 hours making a video on how to do that. 2.) "I dont play versus often or that stuff" so lemme get this straight. Youre complaining about a video on how to improve at versus if youre a below average player yet you dont play the game for which the video is made for? So you just saying words for the sake of saying words?. 3.) worry about offense. lmfao you play one game against a top 100 kid and you will get absolutely roasted, games against the elite are 2-1 3-2 for a reason. Il tell you what, lets play some time, and after that game il apologize for this reply and if i win, you apologize for youre asinine comment. Sound good?
you play on playstation? i would but unfortenately i play on xbox. if you got an xbox i will if not i got nothing for you but i will let you have the last word lol because regardless of what i say its your video and you feel your right, and i still feel like im right based on the way i know i play and it works for me whenever i do. which admittedly i don't do often because i find versus bores me. actually honestly the entire game bores me.
true or false. its easier for a below average or casual player to win more by letting the ai play defense instead of actually learning how to play defense in hockey? My shits not for the elite man i say it time and time again, its to help lesser skilled guys perform better and unfortunately EA has made it so the AI defenders are 100% more effective at knocking users off the puck than 99% of the player base. I dont agree with it, but please do not forget the player base that my videos are for. If you want to take the time to watch real hockey or to look up how to play defense i 100% support that but this series isnt for them and shouldnt be watched by them, which iv mentioned in almost all my vids!
so basically your just telling people to play the skillzone. god i hope in nhl 18 that this is not a thing because its so stupid how your computers can play defense for you while you sit and do nothing
Jon Murray first. I don't make the game. Second, I'm not telling anyone to do anything, I'm simply showing them a method they can use to try and get better. Third. My entire series is to try an help kids that struggle and can't beat people (like you I'm assuming) that are miles ahead of them because they just aren't aware of certain things to hide the shit they are bad at. It is without a doubt easier for someone who doesn't know how to play defense in hockey to allow the ai to do it for them. I don't agree with it, but hey that's what we're given. Some people don't have hours a day nor the want to learn how to play the game at a master level, so allowing the ai to defend is an alternative. To be honest, I'm in div 1 and against div 1 players I control my d 90% of the time because you need to. But don't get chapped cause I'm showing people who struggle at the game a way to succeed more based on the programming of a game that EA makes man lol
yes you are showing them the skillzone, therefore you are telling them that this is how they should play defense. also if you dont play defense like this then why show them the skillzone why not show them how you actually play. tell them how they should control their defense instead of just saying let the computer do it. lastly im not struggling im in d1 too but i just watch these types of videos to see if there is still anyway i can get better, cause even if your in d1 it doesnt mean you are the best or know everything.
Jon Murray yeah alright if your not gonna listen to what I say in almost every vid Iv made so far then I'm not gonna argue with you. I literally say countless times "I'm not the best nor will I ever claim to be the best, I lose from time to time". This whole series is about showing guys who can't get past div 8 because they can't figure out a strategy, so I try and show them one. And other than a select few the response Iv gotten I would have never thought possible. There is a gigantic difference between playing people who are elite at this game and playing people who just play. If you want to be elite go watch someone else's, my stuff is to help the below average players become above average players and from the immense amount of thank you comments I guess it's working. Can't please em all the internet I guess
Jon Murray and to follow up, I actually say "anyone in div 1 or in the top 200-300 in versus, this shit isn't for you" so don't get all bent out of shape because I'm showing players who aren't on your skill level a way to play to be better lmao like I literally say this isn't for you
when did i say anything about your skill level? in my last sentence i was talking about myself. also i just dont understand why you are telling them to play skillzone when thats not how you play. i think a d8 player would improve more if you told them how you played defense to get to d1 instead of just using the skillzone. If they learn how to play actual defense then maybe they can get to d1. I dont know why you assumed ive watched all your vids cause this is my first time watching. It will probably be my last one too since you cant seem to take constructive criticism and had a cold attitude towards me.
This was a horrible video. Teach them how to utilize all the abilities and actually play defense. RB is your best friend on defense both with and without the puck.
Josh Duke if you would like to make a video about going in depth about how to play real defense in hockey. But instead I made a video for guys that struggle to win at all and how to simplify defense in NHL 17. I don't agree with how over powered the AI is in NHL 17, I just know how to utilize it. And if you scroll through the comments past these exact msgs by people that already excel at the game (which I state this video is not for) you'll come to realize that kids that struggled before know have a basic understanding of how to use the ai instead of chasing and getting one T constantly.

hands down best video of this nature on youtube. good stuff
what camera angle do you play on?
I noticed under franchise mode as soon as I started wining games and got into first place the opposing teams became almost unbeatable. Is it just me or does the AI get harder the better team you are? I checked the difficulty settings to make sure I didn’t hit allstar or something, it’s till under pro.
when you only control you forwards in the d zone does it works when you play against EA in offline modes?
20 seconds in, and I'm already hooked.

when are you releasing the hungry hungry hippos video
Conner Gawronski Sunday my dude!
I just want to say contrary to all the hate you're getting I found this super useful as someone who didn't really know what they were doing. I think people are just mad cos comp is tough to play against.
can u teach me how to play hut defense
what difficulty semi-pro? i would show methods to work on superstar
this is online versus real players, i beleive the ai is set to superstar
Oh, well in that case ok. I was confused on the SAN VS PIT i was just confused if you were still downloading lol.
Yeah but what if I am 0-3 on HUT and lose 10-0?
Thanks for tips real helpful explained real well !!!
definitely takes some getting used to but its helped big time thanks for the tips
solid vid man keep em coming

Ive hit the rank wall and its frustrating as fuck

Wow man you helped me BIGLY
glad my vid helped buddy!
Thank you for this video! Has helped a lot. :)
is online on superstar difficulty
yeah the Ai is on highest difficulty online!
Thanks for the tips will try enjoyed the videos
when's right time to change players in my own zone
essentially whenever you get a step behind a guy your tracking, its all about staying in between the user and the net.
love the title
I find this game incredibly frustrating and impossible.
imma try this out i'm tired of getting roasted, i always control the d man. gonna use comp d from now on!
let me know if it helps man! its stupid but the ai defends so much better than a user can
It actually kind of worked. I keep pulling my D men out of position. When the computer controls them he couldn't get easy goals anymore and I stopped losing 9-0. Last time we played I lost 3-2 in a shootout.
I'm ready to give up on online play
Div 1 players always destroy me lol! Makes me wanna punch someone hahah! I've only won div 1 once this year.
That was very good.

Sleeveless Gaming dude do a team play defense tips I hate people getting mad at me for no reason
Pretty helpful
I suck at defense
dont fucking play like this!
well fuck buddy gimme something i can work with lol, what are you suggesting?
Sleeveless Gaming LOL actually learning how to play defence yourself instead of the computer defending for you
true or false. its easier for a below average or casual player to win more by letting the ai play defense instead of actually learning how to play defense in hockey? I just can win my defense sucks
good player dont care other doing that cuz they are better than that
Lol you can hold r2 to get to the last player what is my life 😂
MrBmxer41 lmao that's been in he game for like 6 years and I had no idea until this game hahaha
Sleeveless Gaming Probs just changed my life cause my fuck its so annoying trying to get that player switching through people lol I love you :)
