One detail I like about Blackbeard in FGO is that he's really tall, 210 cm is bigger than servants like Kintoki, Gawain or Barghest. No wonder people found him intimidating in life.

Teach is definitely supposed to be a Crouching Moron Hidden Baddass character.
In okeanus when one of his crew mates is struck by a love arrow Teach knows immediately and executed the man on the spot. His crew just thinks Teach is on a rampage again though.
Or how about any time Francis Drake is involved Teach gets all weird. The pervert thing is an act and you can tell because by all means if it wasn’t Teach would be a super huge pervert to Drake with her chest out for the world to see. But here’s the thing Drake is one of Teaches idols. Someone he deeply respected in life. So he doesn’t want to act the pervert but also can’t openly respect Drake without ruining his scoundrel reputation.
I feel Teach is a well made adaption, one who adapts to wildly different circumstances than we would be used to seeing him in

From what I can get on black beards personality, he genuinely likes being a outku, but plays up the disgusting bits to make enemies drop their guards around him.

There's also the hints that Teach gives every once in awhile towards his true character where his facade briefly falls and he tells the Last Master of Chaldea that he was 'a really bad guy' without any of his usual levity. His alignment is evil for a reason after all and I do feel like Teach has a lot of moments which highlight just how calculating he is beneath his goofy exterior.

Some other great improvements to Blackbeard character is that in summer 3 if I’m remembering correctly one of Teach’s men financially supported Medb and you wanna know his response to that?
Swiftly shoot the traitor dead of course, the pirate way
Not only does this turn him into a swell guy but also makes him greatly intimating, good thing he’s on our side lol
Also the ‘lolicon’ angle isn’t completely out of nowhere surprisingly Mary Ormond is rumored to be 14 when they got married, still potentially disgusting if true and his grossness in Okenos remains gross but it’s the little references/ detail that makes Fate unforgettable so bad it’s good
Really love your analysis of Fate characters there should be more discussion on character like this, subscribed
Edit: I also hope for a menacing Black Beard servant like Avenger Boudica

How Teach marrying a 14 years old girl is disgusting if it was normal back then?..
Don't judge people of other epoch by the modern standarts...😑
When average person dies by 50 and half of kids can't even live up to what considered adulthood by now...Well,not like you have much of a choise...🤷
People back then made what it took to live through that shiet and end up in our age - far better one...
So don't blame them for surviving...
Or at least don't blame a single person for living by the age's rules...

In Summer 6 (at keast the one with summer Da Vinci welfare servant) Blackbeard was able to intimidate the pirate mobs being more to real life, he also showed his party side by using our QP to be theblife of the party at taverns and getting people to talk about the treasure after getting them wasted.

I definitely agree with the direction of Teach's characterization. I despised him at first, possibly my least favorite Servant in FGO. But damn, once the events started getting away from just making him a pervert and began letting other aspects of his personality through, I started to warm up to him. He's no where near breaking my top ten list or anything, but I do kind of appreciate him now as the goofball with an intimidating side.

In the FGO manga - turas realta-, you can clearly see the disconnect between His true personality and his fake one. When he is with his crew or enjoying a fight, he has a different persona to the one he displays to his enemies or when in a disadvantageous position. For more context, read the chapters 23 to 26 of the above mentioned manga.

I think it's harder to see him being a badass is that a lot of his darker/smarter actions are tied into his comedy. So it's easy to just brush it off because its just another joke. Such as a recurring aspect that he is trigger happy with his crew as he's shot them multiple times. I guess this isn't brought up as much because it's usually done comedically, like how Captain Hook did so in the movie Hook. Personally, I do really like Blackbeard as a character since I find him hilarious and a good friend. As for the lolicon thing, yeah, it's obvious that's an act. He does play it up but he is always nice with the child servants and it's continuously shown that he actually has a thing for Drake. Of course, one of his real life brides may have been rather young so...
The video was really well researched. I was a bit surprised you didn't bring up that his NP ship gets stronger the more crew he has. Yeah it's really only been used in Okeanas sadly. Would like to see us use it in a more serious light to fight someone. Like we have to go around recruiting wayward servants in an event/storyline to strengthen Blackbeard to fight someone.

my headcanon is that Blackbeared pretending to be a creepy weeb was originally an act but then he got into it so well it accidentally became his default personality
but I do think they tried to be too realistic with this depiction of Blackbeared (in terms of "im smart enough to know intimidation isnt gonna work against literal gods so lets go to the other side of the deter people spectrum") without making it too easy to catch onto the fact that hes smarter than he lets on

Oh man I never noticed the white/burning hairs
Voyager of the storm is also a skill given to servants that blazed ahead and gave humanity a pathway to follow or at least that is the additional meaning for other servants that have it like Drake Edit: correction I was thinking of Pioneer of the stars when I wrote this initially
It makes sense that only Anne and Mary and Teach have pirates glory they are at present the only two pirate servants alive during the height of pirate glory, Barty was who helped usher in the end of that age.
I won't say that Teach has always been a great character but I will say I have always enjoyed what he has brought to the table, he is a villain you don't want to like in Okeanus but he becomes that weird friend you can't help up love once he has been summoned to Chaldea.
Also don't get too hung up on servant rarity, it will cause you more headaches than anything else, they even joke about it a lot in game

The way i see it, he just suffer from the typical OG servant Lore disease. Its obviouly that at the time they still didnt want to make the servant as prime as they can be in Lore standpoint since that might end up ruin the story, hell pretty much the first 4 singularities feels like they still trying to figures out how to flesh out the story without making It way to hard to get into (just like any other games)
Just think about it, what OG servant from fgo that already being in their "prime" from the get go? They pull a bs on Orion knowing he Is way too strong, Sakata kintoki didnt even appear until what? The end of London (where he just show up and leave, his major role take place way later in onigashima). Of course there Is character like Hercules, but he Is already exist way before fgo so he doesnt count (He and Altera feels the same, both already exist beforehand and in fgo their first appearance only being used as a nuke device, and this Is knowing that both still not on their prime either)
This Is why they try to bring back these old character way later on, especially in event, to give the highlight that they Miss out at the start of the game. But then again i feels like Its just simply better to make a new version of these servant tbh, Its easier and wont ruin all the thing we already know about the existing one (it does feels a bit cheap tbf). They already did it with Drake..... TWICE ..... And yet she still got nothing from it (Poseidon in Drake body when lasagna), so yeah Its long overdue for Blackbeard tbh

Id like to counter point u about reputation, reputation does boost performance of a servant u still have to take into account his actual strength when he was alive teach was decently strong but no super human reputation can only get u so far and an example of that is stheno and euryule when they were alive they had no powers what so ever only after becoming servants did they acquire the ability to fight they are still preaty weak compared to Medusa tho, but the part U missed out on his np, the more people he has on Queen Anne’s revenge the more powerfull the noble phantasm becomes aka if teach has a lot of people on board that ship becomes a fucking killing machine

  • @snowboundwhale6860
    @snowboundwhale6860 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Blackbeard arguably should be in a similar league to characters like Vlad or Sherlock, their reputation/ legends & derivatives makes their names practically synonymous with an entire concept. When one thinks of vampires, Dracula is probably the first thing to come to mind, or is otherwise not far off, Sherlock is almost certain to be in the top 5 names when you think detective, and when one thinks pirate, Blackbeard too is likely one of the first names one thinks of. The whole angle of reputation boosting servants really should be working wonders for him even if his stories don't have him pulling off feats from Greek myth.
The fact that a man who's most well known for being absolutely terrifying even among his peers and who put a great deal of effort into presenting himself as intimidating _doesn't_ have any actual fear debuffs on his skills or NP is a complete injustice though; You said about the charge decrease being a potential way of expressing that, but the game does outright have a terror debuff in it. If he ever gets another rank up quest or an alt, an AOE terror would line up perfectly, and given how he leaned so hard into it in life, having a special attack bonus against enemies that are terrified would also probably fit. I think they'd work as additions to pirate's glory similar to how Vlad's morph becomes legend of dracula

I do not remember where but there was a mention by one of the characters of how dangerous Blackbeard is and that if they were to drop their guard around him, he wouldn't hesitate to draw his gun and shoot them. The Black eard we have is who he truly was. A person that wouldn't look too out of the ordinary but is smart with how to make people be wary and fear him. Is he pervert? I wouldn't doubt it. Is he truly perverted? I doubt it. He most likely plays a character and even towards us, His Master, he still plays the eccentric fool persona. The times we seen him drop it were towards his crew and if they were to have a disagreement with him (it was most likely fone as a joke) or when his crew has signs that they would be a burden, he would immediately pull out his gun and move on without acknowledging what he did.

Let me explain Teach "characterization" on my perspective
I'll have a wall of text in here so bear with it
Teach, is what you would call a heroic spirit which legend helps decided what he would be incarnated
As u explain yourself, he's not the most successful, notorious, wealthy, or strongest
He's just the most intimidating, the most bizarre, and every act and style he do screams "Pirate" so much you could say he's the "original model" for pirate.
Then, he reincarnated into modern world, so which kind of pirate does still exist nowadays? Yep, the one and only internet pirate. Or i could say internet surfer in general.
Ever feel that successful feeling after you found very rare pron or anything that you never see anywhere? The one that you need to venture to the blackest sea called google page 2? A bombardment of ads, malicious link, and virus then in the end you successfully found the download button? Doesn't that sounds like treasure hunting?
That's why everything Teach do does have an allegory to internet culture or pirating
Found rare pron? Figma? Limited edition merchandise? Treasure Hunt and Hoarding
    Chasing Euryale? Idol culture
    Being lolicon? Internet culture
    Hating Drake? Anti hag/3DPD culture
    Internet slang? Pirates speak
But as much as legend influencing his incarnation, he does retain his original keen, sharp, and ruthless pirate instinct, as u mention some before.
Hell, he actually likes girl like Drake the most, having a rare Drake figurine in his room as revealed in one of the event and in one of the event he even goes as far as teasing Drake that she finally fall for him, only to be straight rejected and he felt bad afterward, he does recover quickly like a man with one unrequited love.
The only reasons you may miss his true pirate potrayal or demeanor might be because in game, when he goes serious (like killing his crew immediately after strucked by Euryale's arrow), he use his default sprite to express it. While u might perceive it as a fitting expression normally, seeing that face from the moment you got him from gacha kinda makes u think he's just doing it nonchalantly, which something he may do on Okeanos as he straight up showing no interest or downright looked down on male.
I suggest go read the Turas Realta manga, you'll find the moment in game that looks like it's just a regular moment but actually that was him showing his ruthless pirate persona (like ordering the dying Mary as a shield).
Hell, Anne&Mary might already know about his real Persona and that's why they're accepting his proposal as Pirate Crew, their brutal and violent rejection were actually just an act to get along and strengthen Teach's creepy pervert Persona, so their opponent would be more guardless and easier to dispose.

  • @nadontcare9684
    @nadontcare9684 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Ya know, it's kinda interesting how all the Pirate Characters are some kinda pervert or creep in some way. Anne and Mary are constantly trying to steal the MC for themselves, Blackbeard is... Well, what you said in the video, Bartholomew is a Fetish Freak, the freak, and even Drake is surprisingly amorous with her offering herself to 'be used how you pleased' when we first beat her in Okeanos, plus her changed self from Agartha in Dahut is basically Drake Alter, Sex Edition. Maybe it's just part of FGO generally portraying Pirates as very 'live hard, die hard' and in that living their lives to the fullest comes with promiscuous tendencies as well.

As I recall, while one's legend is important, much more important is the mystery of that legend. Gil gets all his strength from his ancient origins and thus mystery. Blackbeard is actually pretty heavily non-mysterious, being relatively modern, so that heavily cuts into his strength and there isn't much to his legend to foster mystery either unlike say Tesla who has all sorts of grandiose stuff going on about his legend.

Well, in theory, the first "F" Servant in this video series was Lostbelt Vortigern, but because he came complete with Oberon, it saved him from falling into an "F" or being a "D" out there.
And well, it was difficult for FGO writers to do the pirates Servants wrong: they are usually basic or not very complex characters.
But hey, Blackbeard is close to falling to hell with FGO's El Bromas (Mephistopheles) and that FGO's Freddy Krueger (Phantom of the Opera). Chevalier d'Eon is close to falling into hell, but it can be said that they were saved (for reasons) by Edmond Dantès before falling in FGO's The Divine Comedy.

Blackbeard overplayed the damage Hektor did to him to try and catch Hektor in turn. A gross nerd he may be. An eccentric otaku he certainly is. But Edward Teach was not going to take a stab to his back laying down.

I think Teach's last wife is someone around 17yo so yeah. One of his previous wives cheated on him so he chopped off that lover's hand & gave it to her. So it's either he's possessive with his girls or a common depiction of an otaku. IDK which is worse.

Fame really doesn’t buff you that much prime example is Shakespeare
It’s the substance of your fame and stories you can be less famous but have a story that could strengthen you alot
Black beard ain’t really that impressive when it came to actual feats he was just a famous pirate he didn’t achieve a feat like drakes he didn’t fight like anne and mary and he wasn’t as successful as roberts and just like him roberts only had that success to his name so was not that strong
Also showing more of his real self would ruin the point of trying to act like that if people tell you all the time his faking it what would be the point of acting when everyone already knows even if we use he just gets serious at times that would still ruin the point as because everyone knows other

Obviously fame isn't going to turn a writer into a great warrior. Rather, it would be a small enhancement that can make some servants a bit extra dangerous - especially if they are fighting in a place where they are particularly famous. Vlad III in Apocrypha, Nobunaga in Fate/Type Redline, etc.

@@CrazyYurie this is a short anwser he does get the ability to make his NP constantly active on sea thats his boost thats it
      Long answer
while yeah the thing with black beard his geographical fame boost wouldn’t really make him that his not really a fighter stated to be crude and reliant on strength and he those not have any particular weapons
The reason vlads gets stronger but mainly his stakes get stronger in his lands is his famed as a hero there his legend is embellished to a degree him being called the devil really boost his fame power because fame makes it so your strength is closer to your legends power and and his staking of those soldiers is what made him be called a demon so the power of his stakes were buff to a demonic level
Same with nobu her/his story has been embellished to a degree even being called the demon king of the six heaven because of his own words and all that fame came from nobus use of the guns
Teach really doesn’t have that embellished identity to make him a treat yes his big yes he lights his hair these things are his fame his scary intimidating
The only thing he has named is his ship which does get a boost in strength the more servants are on it
And he does get a boost when on water his ship becomes a constantly active NP which is his fame boost
His boost on water does not make him a-bit dangerous but more easy to use as his NP becomes constantly active
Fame ain’t really that reliable in getting more power like a new gimmick or utility the ones that actually get a huge fame boost in strength are the ones who got weaker when turning into a servant or the ones who’s story describes them with higher power then they actually have
Teach only gains the ability to make his NP constantly active that’s it his not a cu who would gain a new NP(cu’s fortress/castle NP)
