  • Jeep Cherokee prices are insane AMIRITE? Ok, maybe not. This video is my personal take on what I think is going down in the jeep world and why I think it is unrealistic to expect Cherokees to sell for bottom dollar prices any longer. Yes, I believe the $10K Cherokee days are here.

    In 1998, I worked at the Chrysler-Jeep dealership, an older guy there told me, I should buy an XJ, saying in 20 years, they will be worth more then, than they are now. He was right, I bought an XJ in 98, still have it. I can't go anywhere without someone trying to buy it, or finding a note on the windshield.

    1995 Jeep XJ bought for $2,800 last summer. No lift, Straight Stock. I love driving this machine. And the recognition for having a clean one is pretty cool. Gas stations, parking lots, park etc. I've been stopped many places. It's pretty Awesome & it is indeed a CLASSIC ✌🏾

    I totally agree. I have almost 300 hours of labor into my 97” XJ. About 15k in total parts including the Rig. My rig would have cost over 30k just labor with no parts! 😂

    • @DooberD33

      Labor doesn’t add to the price of a vehicle

    • @fabguy276
      @fabguy276 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@DooberD33 I disagree completely. It is capital invested into a car. If someone wanted to modify a stock XJ they would be willing to pay a little more knowing someone spent 30k in the work that has been done to it. Nevertheless, one will always lose money invested into a car. My Jeep is definitely worth more than it would be in stock form with death wobble in major need of repairs. Labor is similar to parts. E.g. a mechanic who charges $125 per hour. That kind of labor or fab work invested into a car will get you more for the vehicle

    • @TheRedsuper1
      @TheRedsuper1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DooberD33thats what dealers tell you, but it does when it comes to custom vehicles in the Private market. I bought a built 1999 XJ for less than the sum of its parts. I already have a project car and wanted something ready to roll. I compared the price of stock XJ's and add up all the work in parts and estimated that it had atleast 12k in parts alone,not including all the labor and shipping costs because I live in a remote location. At the end of the day, if you want it the price is the price or build one yourself.

      It's a fun concept. Instead of working on your vehicle on your spare time, go to work and outsource the wrenching. But in reality - which hobbies generate $100 (or whatever) per hour just because you spend time on them? I've had my G-wagen for ten years, probably work on it 100 hours per year...is it now worth $100k?

    Dude, this was great. Thank you so much for this.
    I absolutely love my XJ. I have put SO much into it because I want to drive it for another 20 years. 2000 XJ Classic with factory tow package. Absolutely zero rust (California Jeep) It's all original interior - dark leather, power everything, borderline mint condition interior. I did a meticulous 4.7 stroker conversion, everything under the hood upgraded and installed per spec. 4.5" lift on 33" BFG K02s 15" Methods. I'm currently rebuilding the linkage, re-gearing to 4.56 Yukon gears and considering what lockers will eventually go in (if any... its primarily a daily). However... if someone did offer me 30k for it I suppose I would consider selling it. Probably not... lol

    Before I had my 01 XJ Limited stolen back in September last year (never found, hurts my soul when I think about it), I used to get stopped and complimented on how clean it was, 3.5 inch RC lift with 31” KO2s and my JCR tire carrier in the back, zero rust (I bought it in Arizona and drove back to Cali where I’m from). Got offered $15K for it much higher than what I bought for it but I always refused but thanked them for the compliments. My biggest regret to this day was not buying an AirTag for it because I thought I didn’t need it. Bit me in the ass when my beloved XJ was stolen. This is absolutely the most level headed take on what seems to be a growing trend of “cheapskating”. 90s vehicles are entering the classic arena. If you’ve never been interested or tried to get a classic car, this is 100% the experience. Only this time it’s not your dad’s gen cars, it’s yours, and you’re likely getting old. Really well spoken. 10 years ago Id never image paying $5000 to have a cherokee painted, but now Im putting money away to do just that. I have a very clean 97 sport (besides bad paint) in my favorite Moss Green Pearl, and they are not on every corner anymore. Its now worth it to make them really nice because you can insure them accordingly. I've been obsessed with these since I got my driver's license in 2008, and now suddenly the rest of the world is too.
    The best part about them is the community, XJ guys are they best Jeep guys. Always just stoked to see another cherokee and what's done to it. Made so many random friends in parking lots and everyone has a story. Also your story with the guy in the Dodge 1500 is spot on, we all know that guy and that guy sucks.

When you inevitably rolled it or wrecked it you’d buy another shell and transfer your parts. I’m happy to see the XJ get its due these days though. People always made fun of them saying they were mom-mobiles etc. But it has a light vehicle weight, relatively short wheelbase and it’s so easy to work on. Today, the only cheap ones need a lot of work. I got my '96 Country for $1000 from a guy who broke the tranny and had it so dirty I had to take the entire interior apart and replace or wash everything. I have about $1500 invested already, but I'm sure I could sell it for at least $6K to 7K.
    I live in Cali, and I will tell you that there are lots of cheap XJs around here, you just need to look hard. Lately, I've been finding some at junkyards in much better condition than my own. If I could catch people turning them in to the Pick-a-Part for $150 and instead offer them $250 I could probably turn a good profit fixing them up. You don't even have to repaint them or even fix dents. There are so many at the local junkyards all you need to to take the part you need in the color you want.

    The wife and I were preparing for a 2000 mile trip in our black 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ 2-Door, 4WD that we've owned since it came off lease in 2004, and then added a 3" lift kit, axle extenders with 33" tires on 16" rims. We took it to our favorite privately-owned mechanic shop that did most of the maintenance on it and told them to do whatever it needs to guarantee it will have no problems on the trip. So, they went over it and did what needed to be done to make it totally reliable, and nothing that didn't need to be done.
    When I got the keys and went out to drive it home, one of the mechanics ran out of the shop and asked me what I'd take for it. I said I'm not interested in selling it. He said 2-door XJ's are very rare and one's in as great a shape as mine are considerably rarer, and so he's very serious and offered $25K cash. I said that's a good price, but not interested in selling it. He told me he's seen 4-door XJ's that are almost in as good of shape as mine going for $27K to $30K and selling fast - and he would go that high for mine too. - I said that's great, but I'm still not interested. He gave me his card and said if I ever decide to sell it - give him the first call. I said I would.
    That was 2 years ago, and we still have it - and probably always will. -- So YES - Cherokee's are selling for a high premium - simply because there's nothing else like them being made anymore. The market is begging for someone to make an SUV as good as the XJ - but the ivory tower idiots are just too stupid and too proud to admit their mistake in discontinuing the legacy Cherokee - and so they probably never will make another one like it - and so the price for XJ's continues to go up and up....

    Always loved the XJ's... about 4 1/2 years ago finally bought my clean low mileage all original one. And love it. Someone would have to offer me crazy money to even consider selling it. And in this current market with inflation the way it is... anyone who has a paid off vehicle that has been reliable for them, it would save them money in the long run to just keep it. Because if you buy another vehicle in this current market... well you're probably going to be over paying for it.

    Man I just got lucky and last week got a 99 XJ selec trac with under 200k miles, a 3" live, 33's on some sick black steel rims, fender flares, and a couple of LEDs. Got it for just 5k. The body and interior are PERFECT. No rust, no dents... Perfect. Gonna throw a bumper with a winch, roof rack, and a 2 din stereo in it and call it a day. If I end up off roading a lot, I'll get some lockers, but for what I got it for and the little I have to put into it, it was a steal. Paint is perfect too. I don't know if it was repainted of same paint but no fading or anything. The amazing thing, is the guy who I got it from, his father in law has a shot with 6 more, where he works on them for fun, so if I need to work on it I was greenlighted to be able to take it by and do everything myself, with whatever I need. I think I'm gonna buy one of the other 6 they have around next year. I'm so damn stoked. I've been wanting one since I was a kid. I'm 37 years old now and am FINALLY making that dream come true. So glad to be in the XJ family.

    unfortunately i just recently bought my first car last year. i bought a 2001 jeep cherokee sport that i feel i should have payed 3500 for with all the rust and issues i had to fix though i ended up spending 5k. I love cherokees and ive always loved them, and i dont think i can stop. It sucks these things are becoming more expensive but your reasons are spot on. I personally am not a fan of modding them and love clean stock xjs which makes it more difficult as most people have put lifts of some sort or other mods on them so finding stock ones is hard while also at a good price. I think honestly if anyone wants the cheep prices they expect or want they are going to have to go up north into salt territory and drive backroads for them in tree lines and offer what you think is a good price. Sad fact is your not going to get a semi nice jeep online for anything really less then 4-5k with out really looking and being lucky on your timing.

    I bought a super clean 2001 last year for 3000 with 160k miles. It's a black interior and it's super clean, the doors are all tight, all the electrics work flawlessly. it's a southern texas car, so zero rust. Clear coat is starting to fade on the plastics though, but I plan on painting it. The only thing is it was only a 2wd and the motor was bad. It drove around fine but had almost no oil pressure. Had a bad rear main seal so I think they ran it out of oil. Found a wrecked 98 4wd with similar miles that ran amazing, picked it up for 1200 dollars. Did a full drive train swap minus the rear axle and now have a ton of spare parts. Sometimes I think I got a bad deal but seeing clean 4wd's like mine go for over 6k makes me realize I probably did ok.

    I agree with you bro thanks for talking about this topic. I’m also tired of hearing people complaining about the price of XJ’s. It’s because they are priced out of the market and stuck with clapped ass XJ’s. I myself have a super clean inside and out 99 SE 4 Door Gold IRO lift 33”s… it’s my Offroad and Hunting rig and like you I get stopped all the time I get 10-12k offers all day but like you my 99 has a price but not many would pay it lol. Great content!!

    I can realte to both the XJ and diesel aspect. I daily drive a pretty clean 1990 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer XJ and own two 1st gen Dodge 5.9 12v Cummins trucks (A 1990 D350 and a 1993 W350) on the farm for work trucks. All of them and the XJ are bone stock. I got guys stopping me at gas stations, walmart, even had a guy follow me onto the farm asking if I'd sell them. You're totally right, for the right price I would but it's an absurd price, sorry. Also as you said, these vehicles are not made anymore. Costs of everything are sky high, I'd rather run all of my old trucks and equipment than run any new stuff that I can't work on myself. Yep, that's just the reality. Supply and demand. Higher demand of vehicles no longer made = higher prices. Great video, anyone in the buyers market should watch this. 👍

    I think it really depends on where in the country you are. In the south you can get them for the 2-5k range for a decent higher mileage XJ. You look in the northwest, based on FB, they’re going for 10k and up. I picked up one with some body dents but zero rust under it for $2500. Might have been a little high but I’m taking it up north where it’s impossible to find one without rust issues. Planning on making it a trail rig so the dings and dents don’t bother me. Also grabbed a wrecked one for $400 with a low mileage engine transmission etc to swap in when the time comes, not to mention all the spare parts. Like having my own pick and pull.

    I'm currently in the market for a used Jeep Cherokee and could use some expert advice. When considering the purchase of a used Jeep Cherokee, at what mileage threshold should I start to be concerned? In other words, what is considered too high mileage for a used Jeep Cherokee, indicating that I might want to pass on that particular vehicle? I'm looking for insights into reliability, maintenance expectations, and overall value as the mileage increases. Thanks in advance for your guidance!"

    It really depends where you live. Im in a less popular car market and there are quite a few with 120k - 220k miles going for 2000 - 3500$ depending on condition, mods, repair lists. But you can tell in the next 10 years the Cherokee is going to SHOOT up in value as long as you keep them running nice and clean up the scuffs (horrific rust)

    Many ask stupid money for the condition or "build list" They compare them to high quality builds when they have bottom dollar parts... Those I will comment on, but the use market is completely upside down and backwards right now, and is amazing what a well taken care of or well built Cherokee can sell for... Makes me wish I didn't get rid of so many for so cheap just before things got crazy

    In November 2021 I paid 1000$ for my dark green 98 XJ Sport/Classic with 174k miles clean interior. I also drove it 110 miles home. It needs floor pans, rockers, & a neutral safety switch but runs and drives fine (leaks stuff). Has the 4.0 liter, New Process 242 transfer case & the Aisin Warner-4 speed auto. It has ABS, Cruise control & Ext Idle button. Also has rain guards on the windows :D. I was so happy to find one with the 242 transfer case & ABS I didn't care about rust. (I have welders) Engine is smooth but I'm gonna give her a rebuild when I'm home in Michigan. I bought it in Upstate NY while staying with family in NNJ. It was a Farm Jeep. Pretty sure the dana 35 needs a rebuild, but I wanted 3.73's instead of 3.55's for towing anyway. I would NEVER pay more than 2k for something like what I bought. I couldn't get an 87-96 as they lose so much practicality for daily driving. At least the 98 has 2 air bags. Shes getting roller rockers and a modified oil pan with a built on oil cooler on the front of the basin. Upcountry factory 1" lift package for towing, ZJ rear brakes, So basically bone stock. Sorry for typing so much but I'm new to Jeeps and I think I did pretty good. Considering I can get my head magnafluxed for 50$ in Michigan. I'll do my own valve lapping. Great content, I'm subbed!
