Great video, sadly missed a major thing. There's a Philips head screw right on the glue line of the interior plastic waterproofing goop, which screws into the top of the lock actuator. If you didn't know it was there you'd miss it because it's covered in mastic stuff. If you undo everything this guy shows and don't find this screw, you'll never get it out without breaking it (ask me how I know!). So the lock actuator has 3 torx head screws in the door jamb and one on the inside panel of the door
I just love how you’ve included all the mishaps in the repair. Having replaced all four of my lock actuators at least once I can feel your pain. You kept it lite and funny. We’ll done and very informative.
I've just replaced the door actuator on my 20 year old Disco in southern Spain. your video saved me hours of frustration, especially with that nasty little retaining clip on the door handle! You presented a lot of detailed information in a no nonsense Aussie manner. A pleasure to follow, thanks. Good on Yer! Cheers, Howard
As a new subscriber to your channel, I didn’t realize you have a D2. In addition to my 57 S1, I have a D2, but mine is a 99 with 03/04 headlights conversion. Years ago I had the same problem and I bought 2 actuators: 1 for the same door you replaced and 1 for the rear 5th door. The rear door was a piece of cake and was replaced very easily. The front passenger door wasn’t that easy and now I know why. I was not able to remove the actuator because I didn’t realize that I had to unbolt and move the window frame out of the way. So...to a drawer it went for a long time. Now after watching this video I have enough info and motivation to start the process again and give it another shot. Thank you so much for creating and uploading this video!
Greetings Ony. Glad the actuator video helped. At the time I myself went on youtube looking for a video to assist but found nothing so we made that one. I saw your video of you driving the series 1 down the west coast. Makes me even more anxious to get mine on the road. The Disco's are great cars. We had to do a lot of work on ours but now it seems to be running very well. If you come across our Mojave Road films we used the D2 for that trip. Cheers.
Hey. Im just about to change actuator. Did start in the right end. WATCHING TH-cam:-). This is gonna save me heaps of hours of work. Thanks Mr Foreman for a good video
Great video, and great to hear an Aussie, in America, driving a British car! Very multi-cultural. I need to change some actuators in my Disco 2 and hesitated when confronted with having to 'fiddle' with the window jams / frames. After watching your video it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would be! Thanks! On another note, I changed the actuator on my rear cargo door as it wouldn't unlock with the remote key. Upon changing it, and then testing it, it still wouldn't work, then I realised you have to press the unlock button on the key fob twice to unlock the cargo door. It then worked. It made me wonder if I even needed to change the lock in the first place - I just needed to press the key fob button twice lolol. At any rate, at the same time I removed and rotate through 180 degrees and reinstalled the factory spare wheel carrier so that it would allow me to put bigger tyres on the car including the spare without clashing with the bumper. So all was not lost in this exercise. Thanks again for your videos - they are my first stop when I am contemplating doing some repairs and maintenance on my Disco. Cheers! Michael, Alice Springs, Australia.
Oi! How long have you been in the Alice? I lived there for 6 years from 95 to 2001 before the wind blew me Darwin way and farther after that. That trick you mentioned about the Tyre carrier eluded me. I never even considered that idea and instead bought an expensive adapter that bolts on. I probably only know Jo Gorge who runs the Rock Tour but if you see him around say Greetings from us.
Hi man, wow - small world! I know of the Rock Tours, but I don't know Jo. If I meet him I'll say hello for you! The winds really blew you a long way from Oz! I arrived in Alice from Perth in 2011 for what was supposed to be 3 years lol - and I'm still here hehe! I learnt the wheel carrier trick from one of the many forums and it worked perfectly, and is a very cheap solution - required 2 new holes to be drilled into the carrier, but other than that it is simply bolt off, bolt on. Great to hear from you!
Great video. Just did my passenger door and your video saved my like. Several things though. Be sure to realign the window frame to where it’s pressed against the seal. Mine leaked till I did that. You can buy the plastic door clips on eBay for $4. And you can rebuild the lock mechanism with a new motor from eBay. The instructions are online.
2003 Disco 2: Driver's door usually goes first - most use! Driver's door went at 12 years, front passenger door at 15 years and a rear passenger door at 16 years! One rear passenger door and tailgate still all original from 2003. Actuators look well made - will pull one apart later and try to discover the "Achilles heel(s)" - someone said you can get a motor off ebay and rebuild the actuator (has instructions)?
I absolutely loved this video. I have the exact same problem with my 2003 D2. Interestingly, mine is Vienna Green just like yours. Not 100% sure I can do this but am certain I need a new door actuator. Thank you so much for an entertaining and helpful video.
Not hard - take your time, get a panel-popper/trim tool, pick and some spare door trim plugs (Part #: MWC9134 - do a search). Ratchet, sockets and Phillips screwdriver and "Bob's your uncle"! I put a blob of "Blu Tack" inside sockets when I don't want to lose a nut or bolt down a hole somewhere!
Brilliant mate. Been watching Atlantic British rubbish and they leave out mountains of shit you want to see. Great to see a decent Aussie showing them how. Saved me a lot of grief mate, ta.
Greetings Mark, I'm glad that video helps, I couldn't find anything decent on TH-cam dealing with that subject before we began the project so it's great others can get some use out of the film. Cheers.
Just watched your video and wanted to say Thank You for your detailed explanation throughout the procedure. I feel I can tackle this repair with confidence.
-that was good i was impressed i always seem to have a couple of bits left over or i get half way through and can't find a part i took off. great videos very enjoyable
Great advice to go by Mr. Foreman. I'll keep you informed of my finding. FYI: I'm using my wife Sandra's laptop, she's good at cooking southern food but not mechanically incline like me , Jim.... lol
thank you very much for these tutorials, I do not get tired of seeing them, they are the best explained about the Discoverys, recently I have one but the td5 and they are excellent to learn and thanks to you I try to fix it myself, now I have a problem with the radiator and to see how I change it jejejejejeje, excellent TH-camr, keep it up, fantastic !!!!!!!!!!! Next videos in Spanish JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA !!!!!!!!!!!!!! just kidding!!!!!
Did today so your video is still in use 😀. Nice and straight forward thanks to you but had to remove the door frame to get that pesky black retaining clip off . Cheers
All four doors actuator on my Disco 2, 2001, do not open with key fob but all will lock with key fob. Atlantic British tech said that sometimes driver side actuator could cause all 4 doors to malfunction. Has anyone had this problem? Mr. Foreman, bit of work but great video....thanks for sharing.
Greetings Sandra, my skills as a mechanic are on the basic side so I have no definitive answer. I would hazard a guess that the fob is faulty. In our disco there is a button on the dash to lock or unlock doors, if that works both ways I'd think the fob button is a bit buggered. If the matter is resolved I'd like to know what the problem was. Cheers.
Your videos are great. Your efforts are appreciated. I'm a big Land Rover fan. I'm glad your keeping one alive. That one is one of my favorite D2 colors.
Cheers Ben. That disco just completed the Mohave road in California and did an incredible job. It has been a real lemon and money pit but all the work has paid off after what we did and saw out in that desert. thanks for the comments.
Starts off as a hobby and then becomes an obsession! Good to grab a list of common faults - there are several to watch out for! You grow attached when you work on it!
Good! Glad it helped. We made that film because I myself tried to find something that would light the way but there wasn’t too much I could find. The disco is a great car.
I had some advice on that luckily, about trying to clean up and fix old actuators. The fellow said "don't, it always ends in tears." Though the price of new actuators bought a few tears to my eyes as I've had to replace 3 of them so far. Glad the video was of assistance.
very true Mr Forman.. Japanese were easy to fix n maintain then the European models.. can see u went through alot just replacing the lock actuator.. always enjoying your clips keep it up:)
Thanks for the praise. You might have one of the longest channel names on TH-cam. I did have to do a dummy run before filming the change over of that lock. It took me quite a while to work it out.
Cheers Phillip, Glad you liked the film. Say hello to all your fellow South Africans for me. Great place, I've climbed Table mountain and lions head more times than I can count which is over 20, I haven't yet severed any of my fingers or toes which if that ever happens will reduce my counting ability.
Hi there just watched your video and found it very informative. Got a similar problem myself and was wondering does the drivers keys also operate the door handle lock. As my drivers key does not turn in the lock. Also my fob does not operate both drivers lock and passenger lock it’s only on locks both rear doors.
Greetings Johnathon. I’m assuming you have a discovery 2. The drivers key should unlock and lock all doors on the vehicle. When we bought ours 2nd hand only the driver door and rear hatch door actuators worked so since we’ve replaced the passenger door and both rear door actuators. Our only key was a replica of a replica so we went to a proper locksmith and he could with the help of the vin number reproduce an original key which works great. Is your key an original or a replica. A poor replica may be the reason it doesn’t turn in the door lock or try some wd40. the drivers key is another obstacle in addition to what was shown in our video if that actuator needs replacing.
Great video - congratulations! Did my front door lock yesterday (thanks to your video). I put a blob of "Blu Tack" inside sockets if I'm removing or putting on nuts/bolts so I don't lose them (like the paper I guess). Now, all great, but for the life of me I can't pop that interior door trim panel back on!!! Can't line it up! Any tips?
Greetings there. Glad the video helped. As for the door panel, I seem to recall some plastic studs that attach to the panel and plastic retainers to receive them that live in the door itself. If its not lining up or snapping into place checking all of the above for being wonky or out of alignment would be my first stop. Sometimes the retainers come out with the studs and maybe that could hinder getting the panel back on. Can't think of another likely cause.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Someone told me to start pressing from the bottom (two studs down there) and work up the sides and then across the top. I was starting from the top and one or two studs would always fall out inside the panel (might have to get some new studs as well). Your adventures look great and I love the restoration videos - where the hell do you get the time?
Replaced 4 of the 11 studs (4 studs a bit wonky and the worse for wear). Started at top outside corner, worked my way across the top then down - all good and secure now. Read that it's a small DC motor (inside actuator) that causes these actuators to fail; some buy a replacement motor (very cheap) and solder it in place?
Thanks Michael. Glad the video helped. I struggled to find anything about that subject so figured we’d have a little niche on TH-cam making rivitting and exciting door actuator videos. Cheers.
The joys of owning an aging vehicle hey Mr foreman. Seems rather ironic you're doing repairs, my car's been keeping me busy too...& broke! First was new tyres, then I found a loose bearing hub plus the other side was stuffed, then I found play in the lower ball joints, yesterday I spent 4.5 hours replacing valve stem seals & 3 weeks ago I replaced a steering rack boot. THEN....there's the "panels off" inspection of the rear end, resulting in many paint chips & unnecessary damage as I ultimately didn't find the rust I sought. THEEEEEEN there's the handbrake adjustment & all 4 wheels off for cleaning. It just doesn't seem to stop! Oh' & I washed it yesterday, now it's raining!!!
Tasman, thank fuck I'm not alone!!! Please excuse the vile language but after reading that I don't feel so unjustly persecuted by life. There are others out there. You have my sympathies like I know I have yours.
***** I always refer here first for issues I've not previously dealt with. autofix.com.au/blog/articles Mainly for us Aussies, but the website has a wealth of knowledge for the DIY enthusiast, & if you don't find the answers there you can message the guys on facebook. In my case, I've had a good run with little maintenance needs for the past 3 or 4 years. Caught up with me a bit though. The result of buying what you need, tools etc, for any particular job, is that you have it for future use from that point. & you only need buy a quality tool ONCE. To further amuse you, when I replaced the bearing hub I ran into an unusual problem. The torque wrench I own is so old it wasn't capable of the required 250ft/p of force, capable of only a mere 140! A mate suggested I weld 2 torque wrenches together....mmm My solution, after researching that a Foot Pound is measured by applying 1 pound of force at a distance of 1 foot, was to convert my body weight into pounds, so 120, then use a 10" long extension bar on a 1.2ft long breaker bar (doubling it's capability & by default my weight)...& stood on the end of it! So given my crude calculations, I guess I was able to apply pressure around the 240 to 260ft/p range.
So the replacement valve stem seals didn't stop the excessive smoke on start up. Turns out the rings were shot so guess what we did today.....engine replacement!
I too bought mine secondhand. Not sure if my key is a replica but that’s got me thinking. I remember when I bought it all locks worked off the fob. I will see if I could take it to a locksmith to get a proper key cut. Cheers Jon
Bloody hell!!! My passenger door has "gone", and having watched your video, it will remain so. (Just a matter of leaning across and opening it manually should anyone be daft enough to want a lift). Why do manufacturers make repairs so damned difficult? Anyway thanks for a very instructive video.
Thanks it gave good information. My key doesn’t want to open lock mechanically, it does close when turn key to the left but to open is solid and can’t turn key to the right position to unlock. It could be some of the linkage jammed so need to open everything and check it out. And I need it in order to use EKA CODE to start the engine as keys has been lost and I got only one key that is without fob. Thanks for the video 👍
Greetings there, I had some keys cut for our Disco that worked on the doors but not for the ignition. I then went to a real locksmith with the vehicles VIN number and he cut new keys from that info that work like new. Most likely not the solution to your problem but a factor worthy of consideration. especially if your remaining key is a copy of a copy.
Your how to videos are better than Atlantic British, I don't even have Rover,we have old Cruisers. We also get the occasional gun shots here in Sonoma, is that shirt the same one from Australia?
The shirt from Australia died only a few days ago with a huge tear opening up across the back. I used it not long ago to dry off a very wet dog. The one in the video is even older and was once white but that too is now a rag. Your not too far away in Sonoma, we’re probably hearing the same shots.
Greetings Sarah, I don't have anything on the rear door. I made this video because I struggled to find anything at all about replacing the actuators. I don't know if you've attempted the job or how far you've gotten if so, and assuming it's a Disco. I see a screw hidden beneath the inside door handle but otherwise it appears the panel could be popped from then on. I've yet to venture inside the rear door so I'm uncertain of the challenges you may encounter. I've seen PDF versions of the workshop manual free online and downloadable which may well help.
6 bolts and one plug to remove the whole door, or 6 million different bolts and screws to remove the lock. European engineering at its finest. lol nice one Foreman, well played
I've just undertaken a 3 day job ( for me), replacing the rocker cover gaskets. European engineering is designed for smaller bloody hands than our Japanese friends. I think the job was a success though I am physically and emotionally and financially damaged.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Small hands and two elbows on each arm help! Always a sense of achievement when it's done though! Walking away and coming back later with a new plan of attack often helps! Just drained and re-filled both differentials - easy! But, the transfer box fill plug on the side of the transfer box right next to the parking brake drum and cable (1/2" female square head plug) - so frustrating! Lying underneath - just can't budge the bugger - snapped a 3/8" wobble extension (a cheapo Gearwrench)! Why on so bloody tight? Might need to get it done at a mechanic with a hoist.
So, I did this on my 2000 D2. (She prefers the name Landie, long story) and I somehow messed ip thw window frame position. Now I have a great northwestern breeze coming through whilst driving. What's a proper way to realign that??
Greetings there, I couldn’t really say how to fix the alignment problem with the window without seeing it, else I’d just be throwing out wild guesses. I would have thought if the frame was out of alignment you’d have trouble shutting the door. Could it be the glass that’s not seated correctly it’s little mechanism?
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures so, looking at it, it looks like there is one torx on rear one on front. Just looked at right front door and the window frame is a good 1/2 to 3/4 centimeter lower than the back window frame. Looks like I may not have held it up high enough when tightening. Doh!
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures thanks. Btw, my channel has a vid on how I fixed the autostop down on my driver side window. Or was it the passenger side..
Hi, mine makes the clicking sound when trying to unlock. You reckon its something electrical then? It clicks but nothing moves. You can move it a cm or so by hand tho. Any advice how and where to look and what to check?
When the actuators seize up they still make a clicking noise like they are attempting to work. If all actuators in the truck went out at the same time I'd suspect an electrical fault, but if it's just one here and there over time, I'd expect to be replacing the actuator.
Try popping out the LR badge and spraying the mechanism with grease stuff. Worked on mine with no need to replace any parts and this was a over a year ago in a cold climate.
Yeah, gently pry off badge they say and spray some Penetrene to free it up - haven't had to do it yet. With that assembly, make sure the seal at the top is intact and not letting water in!
Tailgate is easy. Also, try here for rear door locks (write-up) - few differences to the front passenger door and easier job overall (driver's door is the most involved): www.discovery2.co.uk/Reardoor_lock.html
Unfortunately I can’t say with certainty though I’d be surprised if it is much different. One thing to note on the driver side is the keyhole which would be an extra obstacle to negotiate that we didn’t cover in the video.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Thanks for your quick response. I honestly was not expecting one :) Yeah that was an awesome video btw. Keep up the great work.
Cheers Richard, it's easy to let the comedy roll, an insensitive individual once said about me in that I can never truely make a mistake as I never know what I am doing. He was a little bit right curse his soul.
Thanks Richard. I wasn’t too worried about the door not opening, being well aware of my many inadequacies I tend to take precautions and made sure the drivers door was open and the panel was still off. Anything to avoid soiled britches.
Fair play to you sir - did look like a mild bit of initial panic starting to spread across yer chops though. Still, I think I'd have preferred that reaction to have been on my own chops, instead the bloody fury, after having wasted 90 mins gently prying everything apart, and wiggling the window frame out to replace the lock in my OSR Disco 2 door, only to find the lock that I'd bought from a breaker (D'oh!), only locks and doesn't unlock, just the faulty bloody lock it was replacing!
This video helped me do my rear door, thank you from Nebraska, USA

very true Mr Forman..
Thank you sir, as been this thinking in buying a used Landie Discovery 2 v8i Petrol Automatic, useful information! 👍🏼 South Africa - Cape Town!
Cheers Phillip, Glad you liked the film. Say hello to all your fellow South Africans for me. Great place, I've climbed Table mountain and lions head more times than I can count which is over 20, I haven't yet severed any of my fingers or toes which if that ever happens will reduce my counting ability.
Excellent video funny as well
This is Gold mate!
"The soothing sounds of America!"......lol
Very well done! Thx!
Your welcome.
Good video, thanks
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, is a real help to me.
Thanks Richard, glad it helped.
Will be doing my rear door soon. As I said, great videos - love your laconic style and appreciation of detail at the same time!
PS thank you so much for this video it help me change mine
Thanks Michael. Glad the video helped. I struggled to find anything about that subject so figured we’d have a little niche on TH-cam making rivitting and exciting door actuator videos. Cheers.
I fw your vids bro , please upload more
Thanks Berdini, there are more on the way.
***** I always refer here first for issues I've not previously dealt with. autofix.com.au/blog/articles
Mainly for us Aussies, but the website has a wealth of knowledge for the DIY enthusiast, & if you don't find the answers there you can message the guys on facebook.
A mate suggested I weld 2 torque wrenches together....mmm
My solution, after researching that a Foot Pound is measured by applying 1 pound of force at a distance of 1 foot, was to convert my body weight into pounds, so 120, then use a 10" long extension bar on a 1.2ft long breaker bar (doubling it's capability & by default my weight)...& stood on the end of it!
So given my crude calculations, I guess I was able to apply pressure around the 240 to 260ft/p range.
So the replacement valve stem seals didn't stop the excessive smoke on start up. Turns out the rings were shot so guess what we did today.....engine replacement!
thanks a lot you help me alot
I too bought mine secondhand. Not sure if my key is a replica but that’s got me thinking. I remember when I bought it all locks worked off the fob. I will see if I could take it to a locksmith to get a proper key cut.
Cheers Jon
I’m guessing if all locks worked off the fob then some of the actuators have failed. Did the drivers key ever work in the barrel. Did it ever turn?
Thinking about it no it didn’t. I will get a new key cut and then see if the actuators work.
Классно. Самое хорошее видео.
Спасибо большое.
Great video. This shows me I will not be doing this to mine. Lol
excellent right off i go to fit the actuator
Excellent video. Great realism..."aw shit!" lol
Proud owner of a Disco 2 2002:-)
They are great vehicles. Glad the video helps. Drivers side has a key barrel, we didn’t cover that so don’t know what extra is involved for that.
Russell Coight’s bro knows how to Disco 🕺
Hi thanks for this. Do you have a link for a video to repair the rear door actuator? I am stuck!
I was number 600 like...woohoo! Thanks for the very handy video and g'day from Cawarral, central QLD. Cheers.
Greetings Phil. Thanks and I'm glad the video was of use. Cheers.
So how do i remove the door panel if the door can't open?
Doh!
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures I meant to ask, have you ever dealt with testing the abs systems on these?
I haven’t delved into the abs system. Glad you may have your drafty window sorted out though.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures thanks. Btw, my channel has a vid on how I fixed the autostop down on my driver side window. Or was it the passenger side..
.sr. i have the rear driver side door lock and probably is that same problem but how i remove the door to fix that problem
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures alright thanks!🤙
Good vid. Now can you please do one for the rear door as that's the one that doesn't work on my disco 2 😂
I have a '96 Disco I, is there any difference that you know of in that process?
Unfortunately I can’t say with certainty though I’d be surprised if it is much different. One thing to note on the driver side is the keyhole which would be an extra obstacle to negotiate that we didn’t cover in the video.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Thanks for your quick response. I honestly was not expecting one :) Yeah that was an awesome video btw. Keep up the great work.
Great info. Took a while to understand his VERY THICK Bavarian accent tho. 😕
That Bavarian accent is actually Australian
Thanks for the video but damn! What a pain in the arse!!!!!
I love my Disco 2 and I hate my Disco 2....
Cool thanks, but in my case i can't open with my key
LOL excellent made me laugh anyway.
Cheers Richard, it's easy to let the comedy roll, an insensitive individual once said about me in that I can never truely make a mistake as I never know what I am doing. He was a little bit right curse his soul.
The 2002 are different
That was funny - and helpful - did you need new pants when you shut the door to test it and it initially didn't open? :-P
There is a good fix for this mate!! its a Land Cruiser 79 series V8 turbo diesel! LOL
