    Doesn’t get enough love. The lack of backblast was huge. I’m sure the recoil sucked, but so did the recoil on antitank rifles. I’m sure it sucked to reload, but so did crossbows, and I’m sure soldiers of the Middle Ages who had to use them complained just as loudly.

    A documentary I highly recommend is Jeremy Clarkson Victoria cross heroes. A documentary on the VC and some of its winners and who tends to win them. One story it focuses on is major Robert caine who was Clarkson's father in law. He was at Arnhem in 44 and he was using a piat against tiger tanks ( I think) he destroyed a couple tanks and on one occasion after firing a shot which did nothing. When the smoke cleared he was laying prone on the ground and took out the tracks. Like I say I highly recommend that documentary it's been years since I've watched it

  • @Phantomrasberryblowe

    It was an incredible tank killer. Because of the extremely sophisticated shaped charge (similar to modern bunker busting cruise missiles) the PIAT was by far the most effect anti-tank weapon of its time, vastly more lethal than anything the Russians, Germans or Americans could field. What is more, it could (and often did) take out a Tiger Tank - something that was far beyond the ability of its rivals.
    Kill ratio was excellent because most kills were scored from less than 25 meters and no back blast or muzzle flash so ideal for firing undetected. Sergeant Major Thornton at Pegasus Bridge turned back a column of German Panzer's with a PIAT. Major Robert Henry Cain, won a Victoria Cross for knocking out 6 tanks (4 of which were essentially invincible Tiger tanks) using a PIAT initially. As I remember it, he hid in shop doorways and stepped out to hit the Tigers from point blank as they drove by.
    During the D Day landings the PIAT knocked out 7% of German tanks - compared to 6% for rockets fired by aircraft. The PIAT remained in service until Korea and was used effectively by the Israelis in the Arab war.
    The Canadians ranked it as the best weapon with the Bren at a close second. Like many classic British weapons of the time (e.g. the STEN) they could be made in vast quantities cheaply so production could easily be scaled up and the PIAT didn't require any replacement parts due to wear from the blast.

    Fun fact.
    There is a man called Robert Henry Cain who got the Victorian Cross during the Battle of Arnhem. Simplified he was Rambo but with a piat and used a mortar from the hip. He took out 7 tanks with 4 of them being tigers about multiple self-propelled weapons.

  • @wolfschadow6399
    @wolfschadow6399 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The PIAT also had another problem. The size and weight of the grenade gave it a very slow launch velocity and therefore even as the max range was around 100 meters, its effectice range was more around 40 meters which is rather close to a tank, especialy with such an unwieldy weapon.

    • @Motleydoll123
      @Motleydoll123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, plus you needed to learn to adjust the angle of your shot when using it from higher vantage points. However during city fighting or ambush, a piat could be remarkably effective compared with some of their contemporaries. The fact it was cheap and easy to produce meant you could arm not only your own soldiers but resistance forces as well, air dropping in relatively decent anti-tank for the time. It’s success was largely for the same reason the sten gun saw use. Was it the best weapon of the war? No. Would it be better than fighting a tank with a bomb strapped to a bamboo pole? Yes.

    The PIAT also had a much shorter effective range and especially point blank range than rocket launchers (only effective out to 100 yards and have to be lobbed that far whereas bazookas can fire directly and effectively out to 300). You really don’t want to be any closer to an enemy tank than you have to

    • @richardj9016
      @richardj9016 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Compared to the Bazooka or Panzerfaust the PIAT is inferior to both. It has kinda low accuracy, is still more expensive to produce than the recoilless Panzerfaust, fire it from a standing or kneeling position without the usage of the monopod is almost impossible and the operation is clumsy.
    The only real advantage is that you can fire it within confined spaces. But an Panzerfaust can also be fired easily from an window by leaning out and hitting the tanks weak top armour which results in a guaranteed kill.
    The Panzerfaust is in my opinion the best hand held anti tank weapon of ww2. Simple and cheap to produce, easy to use, you can equip multiple soldiers in a group not dealing with additional ammunition and accuracy/range are sufficient enough to disable or kill a tank.

    • @AFT_05G
      @AFT_05G 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You forgot about Panzerschreck.İt was expensive like PIAT but it was also very good anti tank gun.

    • @1987ZerO
      @1987ZerO 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MemeLover the Panzerschreck is the German copy of the Bazooka. Much more capable with the the 88mm and 100mm Caliber. The US later improved their Bazooka to the so called Super Bazooka based on the experiences with the German Panzerschreck. These weapons were very deadly even against heavy tanks from the front.

      @@malvinasArgentinas-y2t I wrote that comment 4 years ago. I know about the video because I wrote an email to simple history back in march 2019 to suggest the video and it was released in late 2019.

    The panzerfaust was not a rocket. It was more a mortar like the PIAT.

    • @gimmethegepgun
      @gimmethegepgun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More accurately, the Panzerfaust was a recoilless gun (which alleviates the recoil problem of the PIAT obviously but introduces backblast)
      The Panzerschreck was the German AT rocket launcher.

      At least this part is realistic. Piat was useless against heavy tanks, this weapon doesn't have long effective range
