    A yes the piat....or as my great grandfather called it, "the greatest weapon there ever was.... because it broke my shoulder In training ensuring I didn't actually have to go fight in the war and got me to meet My darling who was a nurse, lovely Girl she was, said I was like a pathetic broken puppy and couldn't bring her self to say no to my date invitation."

    Doesn’t get enough love. The lack of backblast was huge. I’m sure the recoil sucked, but so did the recoil on antitank rifles. I’m sure it sucked to reload, but so did crossbows, and I’m sure soldiers of the Middle Ages who had to use them complained just as loudly.

    • @barrierodliffe4155
      @barrierodliffe4155 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      After taking out 7 tanks including 3 Tiger tanks the same officer also held off an armoured brigade when he and his men only had Bren guns then he led them to safety, that was why he was awarded the Victoria Cross. It worked better than advertised. Obviously the PIAT was used when there were no 6 pounder or 17 pounder anti tank guns ready or available.
      I notice the PIAT came on top of a list of the most effective infantry weapons followed by the Bren gun.

    The PIAT was apparently effective, but it was also not user friendly. I have fired the 3.5 inch "bazooka", and it was accurate, effective, and easy to operate. True, it was a crew served weapon system, but that second man came in very handy when it came to carrying more ammo.

    • @jerryjeromehawkins1712

    Fusilier Frank Jefferson of the Lancashire Fusiliers, was awarded the VC for actions at Monte Cassino, in which he fired a PIAT from the hip and knocked out a German Tiger whilst under a hail of enemy fire, he reloaded while on the run and forced a second German tank to withdraw. The general consensus among the ranks was that he deserved the VC for firing the PIAT from the hip.

    A documentary I highly recommend is Jeremy Clarkson Victoria cross heroes. A documentary on the VC and some of its winners and who tends to win them. One story it focuses on is major Robert caine who was Clarkson's father in law. He was at Arnhem in 44 and he was using a piat against tiger tanks ( I think) he destroyed a couple tanks and on one occasion after firing a shot which did nothing. When the smoke cleared he was laying prone on the ground and took out the tracks. Like I say I highly recommend that documentary it's been years since I've watched it

      although often maligned in Canadians Under Fire: Infantry Effectiveness in the Second World War (2009) by Robert Engen. They do a good analysis of all standard commonwealth infantry equipment It's full of great info and tactical analysis.
      He examined the Battlefield Experience questionnaires of the over 150 Canadian officers who participated.
      PIAT on page 122:
      "The PIAT was listed in seventy-four surveys as being 'outstandingly effective' far more than any other weapon. Its effectiveness was due not only to its tank-killing role, but also to the fact that its high-explosive bomb could be put to unconventional good use against 'soft' infantry targets, either in direct or indirect roles, making it a good source of suppressing fire. Furthermore, only three officers listed the PIAT as being an 'ineffective' weapon."
      The PIAT was even more highly thought of than the Bren, which was second at 54 surveys…which surprised me.
      when looking at the combat records they indicate that like any Man Portable Anti-Tank system it had flaws but it was actually significantly more effective than it's contemporise although as a design it was probably an evolutionary dead end and it wasn't as upgradable as rocket based systems..
