  • We will now try zone focusing with Leica Q2.
    After a very quick overview of its meaning, I'll show some examples taken in Yaletown, Vancouver, with my Leica Q2.
    Zone focusing will transform you into a photo reporter, go out and practice!
    Please share your thoughts in the comments here below, or feel free to reach out for some terrible life advice.

    The Autofocus technology in the Q2 is a throwback to 90’s tech so mastering zone focus is essential for getting the most from this camera.

    Great video! A lot of people don't use manual focus because it's difficult to keep up with so many situations. The truth is... Autofocus is too slow for many situations! I live in NYC where the action is fast and nonstop. When I'm out with a modern lens... I constantly run into situations where if I just had zone focusing handy I wouldn't have missed the shot.
    I actually picked up a TTartisan 50/2 precisely because of this. It's extremely small so it's a free inclusion in the bag or pocket. When I see a hectic situation coming.. toss that on the body and I'm ready to go. It's only $69 and at F8 or F11 it's perfectly capable performer. Anyone reading this intrigued by the concept but not in the market for a $300 manual lens.. check it out!

      Sharp and compact, at f/8 it’s very hard to beat! Have fun out there :) Tom

      @@OneLensOnly Heya, so I'm looking at the Q2 to replace my Sony A7c, as I shoot zone more than anything else. I wanted to ask: have you continued to shoot zone focus since this video? Do you have any experience to share as far as accuracy and switching zone focus range quickly in the field? You're one of the few people who actually responds to comments so I thought I'd check here first!

      @@tommasocazzaniga9199 Great. Super useful info. I currently have to use two lenses in my 3L crossbody, a manual and AF then switch around. Q2 would allow me to have it all in one body, I believe.
      Thanks for your time. Very helpful 🙏

      Hi Štefan, thanks for reaching out. Yes I do, and I will be glad to record a video where I explain in detail how it works and what are the main differences, with many examples as usual. You will find it available tentatively end of next week. Make sure to subscribe so you won't miss it. Have a good one. Tom

      hi Colm, I copy/paste from a comment on my other video "2 years with the Leica Q2" as you guys seem to like that hood very much :) hope you can find one. Keep me posted if you need anything else. Tom - It’s a hard find ‘cause the item got dismissed. It's a Lim's LH-R49Q1. I found one in stock in a shop in Thailand (KameraCrafts) and had it shipped over. Anyway, if you are looking for alternatives to the original hood, make sure they use the outer mount such as the Overgaard one, or its cheaper copy from MostTap they sell at CamGadgetWorld in Bangkok. Both shops are on FB so you can contact them from there, I purchased some items from both and they are reliable. Good luck!

    Hmmm, Zone focusing seems to a lot of people to be Hyperfocal distance focusing which uses the infinity and the f stop combination in use reading from the same f stop on both sides of the lens barrel, with everything in focus in between the f stops.
    Zone focusing to me is when you use the distance of the subject combined with f stop in use so that you get foreground and background separation (out of focus) and the subject floating in focus in between. Example would be like using a portrait lens at 10 metres with a wide aperture to isolate a face in a crowd. This would be difficult to achieve with the Q2’s short focal length of 28mm. Any views on this? Thanks for the video.

    • @OneLensOnly
      @OneLensOnly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi Victor, thanks for the detailed feedback. I do agree, the 28mm of the Q2 would be challenging for your intended use. Zone focusing has its roots in photojournalism and with rangefinder cameras. This said, I like to take and implement best practices when I'm out on the street; the exercise, here, was to set the distance and to give a depth of field wide enough to be sure our main subject was in focus, so we could only put our efforts on a good framing. Please let me know if this was clear enough, or feel free to reach out if it's not. Hope you are enjoying the contents, have a good one. Tom

      @@OneLensOnly thanks for your reply, i understood what you said. I only commented regarding the zone word as there seem to be conflicting use of the word and many say hyperfocal and zone are one and the same. Maybe I’m old fashioned/school and as a hobbyist the way I described it was they way it was explained to me all those years ago. It was not a criticism or a disagreement, I just wanted to know what you thought and if you think its one and the same or not. Thanks again.
