Is the Sony a7V Worth the Upgrade?
Waiting for the new Sony a7V to be announced, but what new features will it include? Sony normally puts all the latest tech in the new camera bodies, will this a7v be a big leap forward vs the Sony a7iv, or will it just be aligned to the Sony a7c ii?
Please share your thoughts in the comments here below, or feel free to reach out for some terrible life advice.
Thank you.
Recorded with my Sony a7c ii.

Not the best mic, though, I have to admit. Rode Wireless Go ii is a totally different level
the title is more like from a reviewer's perspective than photographer's perspective. Since decades, meaning since auto-exposure and auto-focus, new features address minutiae. The photographer's experience is a lot more important than the latest camera features. "Worth the upgrade" implies that a new model could noticably improve one's photography.
(or, pro photographer's perspective, improve the workflow)
@@OneLensOnly as I am not a pro, just an enthusiast hobbyist, I try to not comment on pro concerns. But do it on a meta-level here. A pro would probably know what she needs in the first place, or talk to other pros with real-life experience using new gear. I realize my comments here are not very cordial, all while I want to spread positivity and encouragement in photography. What I can say is this, a pro photog I know downgraded his lens bag to a single lens, a Tamron 28-200 variable-aperture zoom and consistently takes better photos than me. He is so good if I lend him my gear which he has not experience with, he still can operate a camera and takes, on the spot, portraits of ME where I look almost good. He was a Canon guy before switching to Sony, while I am a Nikon guy with a Fujifilm knack, I sometimes photograph events on a pro-grade level while not earning money, workflow is important for me so much that I rarely do anything with Topaz or even Photoshop, mostly just Lightroom. I am not a pro but experienced enough by now that I photograph events still with DSLRs even though autofocus is not as good as with latest Sonys, but I get almost all pics in focus no problem.
Sorry Dude but that was seven minutes of waffle and next to no real, concrete information about the camera!
This was the last video of a series dedicated to the Pixii, find the other ones and you're having plenty of details and photos samples :) cheers
Im trying to decide which lens to buy between the Tamron 20-40mm or the sony 24-50mm. I do club photography. Currently i use the tamron 28-75mm but 28mm in most situations it's not wide enough. I would like the Sony for being a native lens but im afraid i will still struggle with 24mm, hence the 20-40mm is more tempting. But still, i havent use native glass for so long that i feel this might be the right time to do so 😅
If you could try / rent both and see which one resonates with your workflow :) either one will be a great choice! Cheers
I'm disappointed with Sony. Thinking about going with Nikon or Canon. The small size bodies and lenses keep me with Sony, but the lack of reliability is a problem. Maybe i have bad luck, but now I have a dead A7C, the camera doesn't turn on, and a A7RIII with a dead screen so I use it only with viewfinder. Searching for solutions in internet i found that are common problems for Sony, both related to the electronic boards. Now I'm thinking about selling the cameras, repairing them, buying other Sony or going Nikon with an adapter to use the Sony lenses. I never had a problem like this with my Canon DSLRs or my Nikon DSLRs
This is so disappointing, I am sorry to hear that. Definitely never heard anything like that on a Nikon D850 that was the pinnacle of its era. Now, with mirrorless (but also with cars and motorbikes), electronics might fail. Aren't you covered by a warranty?
@OneLensOnly no warranty. The A7RIII is the oldest version not the A7RIIIa that Sony still sells. It had a year of warranty when I purchased, but it was years ago. The A7C I bought it second hand, with less than 3.000 shutter actuations and now is out of guarantee. Maybe you are right and it's a generalized thing, I only searched for the problems I encountered but maybe Canon or Nikon models have similar problems. I mean, even Toyotas are more prone to fail today than 15 years ago.
Let me know what you choose next, I'm curious to know what gets you inspired again, after this story. Thanks for sharing

A cool tool. And a hilarious AI thumbnail!
I could have it with my face resemblance, but I didn't feel like having that third hand :)
Even while trying out several brands I’ve been pleasantly ‘stuck’ with Sony since the A7R was introduced. I currently compliment my A7R V with G Master, Leica, Zeiss and Voigtlander glass and a Q3 for giggles.
The best combo ever! I borrowed the a7r3 from a friend, paired with Zeiss optics for some interior shooting, and had great results (of course). Love that camera.
Did you mean the Sony 24-105mm F4 is not as sharp as the lens that you are using? Btw, thanks for the test. I was on the fence between Sony 20-70mm F4 and Sony 24-105mm F4 and just saw your video with the old Sony Zeiss 24-70mm F4.
Correct, it has a broader range but optically is not at par with Zeiss. Which is not as good as Zeiss prime lenses, either :) compromises, choices, but in the end these are all great tools
@@OneLensOnly Just subs. I'm the same as you. Prefer only one lens for everything.
What vlogging handle are you using? Thanks
I detached one of the legs of my tripod, that can be used as a monopod, and didn't extend it. A bit heavier than a regular handle, but I can still use the ballhead and the arca Swiss mount. Cheers
@OneLensOnly Thank you!!
Nice video, i always find myself using a 1.4 for low light the Gmasters come in handy.
Thank you! I did find a couple deals for G-Master glasses among black Friday offers, but they cancelled both my orders :) probably a mistake on the pricing, it was too aggressive
@@OneLensOnly Well, i did the same thing last year and bought my GM 24 for only 795 euros and got it.
I found a 24-50 for 520 and a 24-70 (version 1) for 540. Both cancelled. When I saw the 24-105 at 450 I didn't even try
@@OneLensOnly Maybe that was just a little to good to be true. They usually cost double.
I know, but it was on Amazon marketplace I risked it only because I was sure about the refund in case anything went wrong :) keeping my Zeiss
No IBIS no sale I own the 50r, 100s and Leica Q2 and Q3 43. As I get older I find IBIS indispensable which is why my 50r rarely is used.
Nice gear! Wow
“It doesn’t disappoint because it’s Zeiss”. Unfortunately, this Zeiss disappointed most of its owners. There are better 24-70 choices for Sony. Keep the 55 prime, you’ll regret selling it (I know I did!).
Yep, this zoom lens is not comparable to the 55mm I know. Convenience vs image quality. Still undecided
@@OneLensOnlySony doesn’t seem to be making many (any?) lenses with built in stabilization since their bodies got IBIS. If you want OSS in medium to shorter FL, you pretty much have to choose older lenses, like the Zeiss.
@@MrPedalpaddle or the 24-105mm f/4 but that's even less sharp vs the 24-70 Zeiss and a bit bigger, too. not to mention the double price :)
It an excellent zoom wit character, not super sharp but you have the zeiss colors and pop. That makes it an unique zoom with properties only primes have. And you`re wrong there aren`t any better choices in this price range that offer this much value. Besides, on a normal screen or medium size print you won`t see the slight softness of this lens anyway. Way to much pixel peeping going on by pixel freeks not artists.
That`s a difficult choice, if a choice at all. I think and have it out of personal experience that a 55 is not a one fits all solution. It`s just to narrow. The 24-70 might be, except in low light when f4 is really strugling. Offcourse the 55 is much sharper, smaller and lighter. I have the both and keep it that way. A true allways on lens for me is a 35 f1.4 i have the Zeiss and the Sony GM they`re both great lenses.
I think I am making up my mind, I do really love this 55mm but I also didn't like having to swap lens so often :) Not collecting them, though
@@OneLensOnly f2.8 zoom lense? Tamron 17-70 or 28-70 seem like a good fit for quality / price / performance. (if you liked the 17-70 enough you could even possibly eliminate the 16mm prime too)
Isn't the 17-70mm a lens for APSc, or did I miss something?
@@OneLensOnly It is for APS C
@@OneLensOnly sry, was looking at a list, didn't see it was the aps-c. Personally looking at a 2.8 sony g zoom lens (used) much more money but worth it IMO if you use it lots. I like running 1 lens too but I have a few. I just take what i feel like using. Maybe a spare zoom / superzoom in the car if running a prime but currently have 4 (2 prime, 2 zoom) my next will probably be a wide fast zoom. Tools for jobs, though i have to say my fave prime isn't my current 40mm (or 35 or 55 i've had before) but my 90mm. Just love that lens.
Thanks! This looks like a fun camera!
I hope it is!
I was fine at first with no IBIS on my 50R. It is hard going backward once you've used it in the current models. The only thing that has going for this camera is a EDC MF camera. This camera will fail if the size doesn't meet people's expectations. I find it difficult how this will be the size of an X-Pro, especially with a bigger battery it will require.
I used the Pixii for a few months, no IBIS and small Duracell batteries. It did just fine but I could use it for free. I'll keep this 100rf under my radar though
F4 lens with no ibis, if these specs are true, I’ll pass. F4 is still F4 in terms of lighting gathering. No ibis, will make shooting a 100mp sensor at F4 in less than perfect lighting conditions a challenge.
F4 is the min I use for street photography, when the day is not so bright and I am covered by the shade of buildings, to help a bit with shutter speed. I wouldn't know how the medium format reacts to micro-jitters as I never owned one and if this condition limits the shutter speed to the fast side
lets be real, 300mp 64bit global for edc is minimum before next 6 month upgrade
It's not about MP and bits anymore, it's about the feel (sorry, this is the response the A.I. suggested; I couldn't resist)
Viable concept, but what is the projected MSRP?
We can only imagine a range that would align it with Leica Q prices: the x-pro3 still sells for 1500 and the GFX 100 ii well, it's more expensive but aligned with Leica. Anything lower than that and it will sell like hot cakes. But it's too early to know. Stay tuned I'll be digging
Watch out Leica Q
I wonder why the x-pro line didn't get a successor
100mp is useless. I have a GFX 50r and am shooting now mostly with my nikon zf. The GFX sits on a copy stand. 50mp ibis, backlit CCD with latest fast processors and autofocus would be much more useful.
We'll see what they really come out with! At the moment it's just a rumour, I would be surprised if they started the buzz to gather feedback :)
No IBIS 👎 what???? That makes no sens Youd woukd buy a 50R with 50 3.5 which is 40mm
Still just a rumour, but they didn't put IBIS in the xm5 either and that one is clearly targeting vloggers!
@OneLensOnly No ibis saves weight and battery life....I'm a GFX users x 2 100s ii and 50s ii I think ibis is very very useful for medium format
Totally agree, when I can I pair the ibis with ois and get the best combo. Recently I saw camera companies more towards the digital stabe. If well played (such as on DJI) on 100MP the crop in might be not so pronounced. We'll see
A range finder style body, but I would be surprised if it is an actual range finder. But I find the whole product bizarre, so I guess anything is possible. I have yet to hear a persuasive “use case” for this. (I’ve just gone backwards & picked up a used Fuji XT3- lots of fun!)
I guess they are trying not to surrender to full frame, this is what they have and they try to make something out of it. APSc and medium format. X-pro line was great. XT, too. Didn't you have a xt4?
I have an XT5 with its tilt screen - I didn’t like the flip out, video screen of the XT4, like the Sony a7c
they just have to make an updated version of the GFX 50R, still 50MP, IBIS, modern processor and better viewfinder. Fixed lens is in my opinion the wrong way
We're still at rumors level, anything is possible :)
I agree The problem Sony makes the sensor and Sony have said they are not making it 😮anymore The 50r and 50s ii have been discontinued

@@nevvanclarke9225 my gfx50r sits and I shoot mainly with 24mp nikon zf. I'm not changing my tune. I've got better things to do than pixel peep.

You should name the channel "One Take only Tommy".
Lol. Gotta start a one take only podcast
The Sony 20-70 f/4 is meant for meant hydrid shooters, so-called "content creators" who want 20mm for your selfie "talking to the camera" videos and then the reach to 70 for a normal zoom lens. I bought mine so that I would have a lens suitable for indoor architectural shots where I want an extra wide without changing lenses. It is a faithful lens that some might regard as sterile, but I think its accuracy is appropriate for its intended use. That said, I will be selling mine as I am a photo-only shooter and not using it as much as I'd hoped for indoor shots.
If only it had the OSS that would be the perfect one lens only. I guess content creators would use a gimbal though (I will not, as you know). I suggest you keep it and on the a7r3 it's the perfect combo for a trip to Italy
That`s nice, isn`t it. The classic no nonsence Zeiss look on an ultra compact FF with mini grip.
I have the Zeiss 16-35 and the 24-70, i really like the colors and rendering. Zooms are daylight only for me, so i don`t bother about the F4. All the other sony zooms are not to my taste, with boring and flat rendering and being often to large and heavy., For example the f2.8 is in my book the inferior of the Zeiss. It`s sharper but very flat and boring. For a zoom i think the colors and a pleasing look are most important, the rest is a compromise anyway.
Reason why it's here with me :) old metal design and Zeiss glasses, I need nothing more. Stay tuned as I am working on a series 24-70 related. Thanks!
@@OneLensOnly Great. Bring it on. The Zeiss 24-70 is a one of a kind zoom. The 16-35 would also be something to consider, prime colors and rendering in a ultra wide. Amazing.
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to test the Brightin Star 16mm they are sending me first :) but definitely worth considering
@@OneLensOnly That lens also seems very interesting. I`m looking forward to it. Btw. Show some photos you took with the 24-70.
Nice. I’m going to pick up the Zeiss 16-35 f/4 for a trip to NYC. I have no complaints with my Zeiss 55 mm.
You are going to love it! it has been a while I didn't visit NYC have a nice trip
Please don't ask us to like and subscribe the second the video starts. Why? Think of it as a tip. Would you give the waitress a tip the second she arrives at your table? "Hello, please don't forget to tip me, can I take your order?"
Feel free not to. Anyway, this video is so very old, I just started my channel back then and I discovered many things in The months to come. You are the second one that gives me this unsolicited advice two years after I posted the video. What can I say? Thanks?
That is an excellent deal. I hope you will receive a good copy. Looking forward to hearing of your experiences!
Thanks! I'm working on it :)
I think it’s just a very mature market, now. Mirrorless was largely virgin territory just a few years ago…what we’re seeing right now is similar to what we’ve seen with the TV and mobile phone markets. I do see some areas to really move the needle (the biggest being Android-based operating systems and real security features). But we already have more megapixels and frames per second than we could ever need…I’d like to see more quality of life and system-integrations improvements. That’s where the frontier really is, to my mind.
Very interesting take, thanks for your contribution. I'm all in for quality of life, of course I am still defining what that means to me. It's ever changing
Indeed. One man’s nightmare is another man’s Leica. To each, his own.
$6500 for this camera body (no lens). At that price, with those specs, and for my use, I will buy a Q3 every time. Not that I will buy a camera at those prices - It would be a camera for bringing on my bike - but still.
That's the thing, tech will be obsolete soon and this is why Leica keeps being appreciated. More MP more stabe more fps can be easily overcome. I had the Q2 and loved it -''til when I was bored :)
Great lens. Much better in reality than on paper. Zeiss pop and zeiss colors, some compromises made on sharpness. But it`s a zoom. so very versatile.
I just got it, I see some color difference vs the 55mm but maybe it's just my first 5mins impression :) I'll have to use it thoroughly before I make up my mind for a full review
@@OneLensOnly There is color difference, i also have the 55mm. I think the colors of the 55 are slightly warmer with a touch more zeiss gold look. The 24-70 is slightly more bluish but not in a harsh way like sigma, excellent for outside. They`re both great lenses but the CA of the 55 bothers me more.
I might keep only one of the two, as Brightin Star is sending me a 16mm f/2.8. I'm puzzled about what would be the best combo, 55+16 or 24-70+16. I feel the 55mm is more "true to Zeiss" if this makes any sense. On the contrary, the zoom is way more versatile and adds the OSS to the package (together with a couple cm and 200gr)
@@OneLensOnly i think the 24 70 is a true to zeiss lens. Its just differenent. The 55 is a lot faster. If thats important
I watched this video for a couple of minutes, and I really didn't feel like you know what you're talking about. Then, I took a look at your Instagram page and realized you just aren't the kind of photographer that needs an A1 or A1ii.
That's correct, sir, nor I feel the need for any of them. I am awaiting for the next gen of cameras as it is my humble opinion here we reached the peak and more MP won't fill any gap. Dynamic range peaked. Stabilization, too. And the over-sharpened looks we get from recent glasses don't sayisfy me
I had a look at your channel, you really put your a1 to good use :) Keep up with the good work, I love wildlife channels (e.g Morten Hilmer if you know the guy)
Sony no longer needs to innovate at the same rate they had to in the past to gain market share because they are now a significant player in the market.
What about the other brands? I didn't get excited about the global shutter nor the huge amount of mega pixels they all worked on, I was expecting some breakthrough on dynamic range at least. I guess we'll see variations on the same theme for a while now
@@OneLensOnly That's what Canon did with the R1 did you see the Pic Sal Cincottoa did? 32,000 ISO PRINTED OUT!!!!!
I'll look for it right away, thanks!
Maybe give a bit of content before asking for likes!
thank you for the unsolicited advice :)
Not suport camera sony A6400, help me
sorry to hear that. My a7c ii is not supported either, but I installed it on my phone and I am using it :) you can try with the a6400. If it doesn't work, I'm sorry, you'd better find another solution. Have a look here: th-cam.com/video/zmlU4ZHi-0Q/w-d-xo.html
@@OneLensOnly Thank you for that info! I have an a7c (first gen) and I couldn't get it to work. :/
lol yeah, I tried this thing out too... it's kind of OK for snapshots, but I made the huge, huge mistake of using for an architectural shoot. it has THE weirdest, most convoluted distortion of any lens I've ever used - impossible to fix. good riddance! 😂
😂 thanks for confirming I am not crazy. I had people attacking me for saying it's not good (but good enough for the price), because they had "great photos" with this lens and their crop camera.
In 1970 we would have died for the quality of the zoom lenses available today. The prime lenses were not as good as the cheap zooms now. Get a zoom.
I remember the equipment I inherited from my auntie, it was a Minolta suitcase with plenty of heavy glasses :)
I've had this lens for about a month and honestly, it takes amazing photos especially for it's cheap price!
Good for you, sir :)
I may have some tips for you. Your Zeiss options are really nice. You could also try the excellent but large Zeiss 16-35 f4 which has even better colors than the 24-70 and goes way wider. You could both try the Batis 18 or 25 lenses, the 18 is my all time favorite. It has magic colors. They`re both light weight. Voigtlander might be an option for you too but it`s manual.
Thanks for the advice, I did use the Batis on a7r3 to shoot interiors many times and loved it. I am more into old Zeiss glasses than actual G master I don't even know the real reason why, they just resonate with me for size / form factor / image quality / price. I just realized the 24mm f/1.8 is for APSc and that's a shame
@@OneLensOnly It is and i have had it. It`s beautiful. Besides, i also have the GM lenses, if i want a perfect picture i use them. They just seem to have less character but sometimes you just want that. I use the 24-70 Zeiss quite often, everybody like the colors.
Apparently, the more the ED elements in the glass, the less the magic. G master glasses have plenty and while they make the image super sharp and well defined, the end results appear a bit clinical. Hence my Zeiss love
There are some excellent Fuji lenses e.g., the f1.4 series
He`s into Sony. I can`t blame him.
Fuji lenses are great. Also, Fuji used to actually produce film stock back in the days. I am expecting great things from the GFX Eterna
I have it in my bag for the few wider angle shots I might need. Does a good job, for the price quite sharp
Yeah it's good enough. I might try their 24mm f/1.8 but I saw the fall off is quite evident on that one, too
The Samsung 24 f1.8 gets good reviews. For some reason, the Zeiss Batis 18 f2.8 seems quite cheap used.
Love the Batis but it's bigger than my camera :) I might need the a7r3
@@OneLensOnlyThe Batis does have a big profile, especially with the hood, & 77 filter size, but not too heavy, as you will recall!
Please have a look at Christopher Frost's review of the Zeiss 24-70mm f4 before purchasing it. He did not recommend it
I will! Thank you very much! I have been on the fence for a while now, but I can't get away with a zoom glass (I just love primes)
I agree - Tried the Zony 24-70 many years ago but thought it was one of Zeiss’s missteps
Thanks for sharing, you guys are saving me a few headaches
He`s a pixel peeper, look at the whole picture and see the Zeiss magic. Remember it`s a zoom and not expensive.
Does this feature also remove dust spots from scanned film negatives?
I never tried, but I don't see why not. If you want to be sure you'd better send an enquiry from the developer's website and they will let you know :)
