- North Americas largest display...... in 1998 anyways. I got to work this very show in 1999. As many of my videos are, this is very rare video, you will NOT find this anywhere else so enjoy!!!
I wish the city of Houston could bring this back and have every year
This year in particular, being the 20th anniversary of the first one. Would be a perfect time.
Thank you for posting this! My airchecks of all of the Power of Houston were lost by the movers.
Dang i remember this when I was visiting my dad in Houston from Los Angeles
French composer, Jean-Michel Jarre, did something similar to this back in 1986, as he does in a lot of cities around the world. This brought back so many memories of that. Come on, Houston. It's time for another one. Especially after all this chaos we're going through.
Rendezvous Houston!
@@cwize, and also in Lyon on October 5, 1986, Pope John Paul II came to his hometown and the concert took place at the Fourvière hill, it was called Rendezvous Lyon Concert for the Pope, sequel to the Houston Concert.
It's funny - he actually did return to the Houston area a few years back - albeit in a much smaller venue for a more traditional concert hall performance. Still, it was good to have him back!
Estuve ahí y fue espectacular! Fue un espectáculo digno de la ciudad espacial. Houston Tx. ❤
Man. So many of my friends & former coworkers in this video! I THINK I have a VHS of the first year (1997) - I did most of the soundtrack for that one. It would be fun to see. My original soundtrack was programmed more like a DJ set instead of just "a song, now another song, now another song" - but they chopped it up a bit and threw in some songs - to me it's obvious what parts are mine and what parts are not, but who know what the general public perceived. Started with "Start Me Up" by The Rolling Stones and ended with the last half of "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter. I worked on year three a little bit. These productions were amazing. SO much time, talent, blood sweat & tears went into those. I do remember being just flabbergasted, when talking to several people in the days after year one, that so many had just "gone to see the fireworks" and didn't even listen to the sound, even though it was simulcast on the radio and was played through PA systems in certain spots in town. After all the precision Light/Laser/Pyro programming, I was just like "WHAT? You missed the whole point!" LOL. Eh, good times though. RIP Jimmy Page (Syncrolite). The industry still misses you.
EDIT: found a vid on youtube hand shot with a camcorder - th-cam.com/video/tII08CfA96E/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for posting this! Have been waiting for someone to post decent footage. I remember seeing this as a kid on top of the AIG garage on Allen Parkway. What I don't remember is why you have numbers (Sky Power I, II, Etc.) Was this a yearly event? 1997-?There are several songs I clearly remember (Visuals were impacting) That are not in this video. Anyways, Thanks Again For Posting!
Nevermind answered my own questions doing some research :)
KTRK has all of the broadcasts archived. I know, I recorded and prepped them for the archive. Unfortunately I doubt Disney would post them for us on TH-cam.
I wonder why they don’t do the Power of Houston anymore.
Houston needs another celebration like this again.
I was here!!
Hey thanks for posting this, I have it on vhs too but some of the soundtrack is different. Did you swap in some songs on this or did it come like that?
The music here is original to the production. We were on a tenth floor balcony, right on Memorial Drive. At times the fireworks were so close, they seemed to be right over us. It could never happen again, what with all that is happening in our country. Very good times back then.
@@randallerickson175 considering this happened every September up till 2001 i gotta imagine 9/11 kinda ended it
@@gregoryfails855 That very well may be the case, but if memory serves me correctly, the laser and light show was moving to Dallas after the last one in Houston. Not sure why though or if it actually happened.
Evey ten yrs atleast would be awesome i think people would come to houston to see it. It would be expensive but it can be fit into the budget every decade and I think it would boost the city's economy if it drew a good crowd.
I had the first tape of this but recently got rid of it
😁
Ugh why Houston so lame and don’t do this anyMore
Funding! It’s crazy expensive to do - and after 9-11 of course large scale public things went into the toilet for a while
