  • April 5th 1986, at 8.15pm, Downtown Houston is aflame. A kilometer long wall of skyscrapers is illuminated by DCA projectors, fireworks and beamed images. Over one and a half million people witnessed for the very first time an entire city in concert.
... Jean Michel Jarre's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Houston and Texas, and of the 25th anniversary of NASA, was one of the most spectacular concerts in the history of music.
... Rendez-vous Houston: A City In Concert gained an entry in the Guiness Book Of Records for having attracted the largest audience ever for an outdoor concert.
... The event is also dedicated to the memory of the astronauts who perished in the Challenger tragedy. One of them, Ron McNair, astronaut and saxophonist, should have interpreted "Ron's Piece" in space (a title specially composed for him - it was to have become the first musical piece played and recorded in space.)

How I began to like Jean-Michel Jarre's music was when The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation was showing Jean-Michel Jarre's Rendez-Vous Houston concert in the night in 1987, when I was 16 years old and had a weekend, when I watched the concert on TV ☺ From that moment I become his new fan ☺

The part where the saxophone player was was up on a scaffold on the skyscraper, playing a duet with Jean-Michel, the sax player was supposed to be Ron McNair, an astronaut on the Challenger (????) shuttle, was supposed to play his sax in orbit along with Jean-Michel. Sadly, we know what happened to Challenger and the crew. But it was supposed to be the very first orbital/ground-based duet in music history.

The sax was played by Kirk Whalum, in place of Ron McNair, who died in the Challenger Shuttle launch. There were a lot of people that connected with that song in Houston. I was standing along Buffalo Bayou, between Allen Pkwy and Memorial Dr. I will remember it for a lifetime. My first experience with JMJ was with the album Oxygène. Until that point, Tangerine Dream, and Synergy (Larry Fast), were my only exposure to Synth music. Jarre fan ever since that album. His father's music is great also.

As a young frenchy and Jarre lover when I was a kid, I had bought the audio tape of the "Houston & Lyon Concerts".
On such a tape, the A side used to start with all these _TV News_ excerpts one can hear at the beginning of this video.
This occurred somewhere close to 1985. At this time, I couldn't understand one single word I was hearing. I was just able, here or there, to barely understand "Houston".
Almost twenty-five years after, I may now understand what is _actually_ said in all these TV excerpts, that had kept being such a mystery for me since these days... :)

Thank you soooo much for posting this! I was one of the lucky people to attend this event though I was not close enough to see the musicians. As good as this video is, it was sooo much more amazing in person! 'd been telling my husband about this and it was only today that I searched to see if anyone had video after not finding it many years ago when I tried to find it on YT the last time. Such an awesome event worth seeing/hearing again and I didn't even have to fight traffic this time!

JJ Jarre was an electronic music pionneer ... he brought so much to this kind of music ... i remember with emotion this concert was so incredible and avant gardist for the 80's.

Watching this on tv and then seeing him live 3 times in the uk inspired me to creat what I do now. I use lasers a lot in my music as well as a small studio to creat my own music. Thank you jarre you are a legend.

Houston is blessed to have that iconic flat front facade to their skyline, makes it easy to use as a backdrop for anything. I was a Houstonian for 12 years and was lucky to live there when they did the Power of Houston Laser light show events (1997-1999) incorporating the skyline as well. Power of Houston has the best light show I have ever seen to date. This show has a story and depth that puts in a league of its own. Amazing.

I watched this live from my father's business office on the roof he had keys to the building Brookhollow to around Magnum and dacoma I saw the whole show very well from there I had already had the album oxygen and rendezvous with had my Boombox up on the roof with me to listen to it simultaneously wow what a memory the fog was closing in on the last song spectacular I was in my late twenties later I went to the Willowbrook mall with my album and had Jean Michelle Jarre sign my album. I still like to tell people about it! That means I was watching it from Highway 610 Loop down to where it was fantastic!

I have to add more from the great distance that I was I couldn't see the people or Jean Michelle but I could see how well synchronized the larger show was the lasers the fireworks with the music it was absolutely superb. Watching it from the great distance was absolutely Superior and the projections on the building's I wish I could see shots that were taken from a great distance because it shows the Perfection of the show.

Just over 32 years since this took place. I have my dad to thank for introducing me to the music of Jean Michel Jarre. It's a legacy I've carried on and on with to this day. I saw him live when he was at the NEC in Birmingham in 1997. He had a few technical issues that day but it didn't detract from the fact his music was awesome.
This album is one of my favourites and I'm forever listening to it on Spotify. Ron's Piece just gets the heart flowing. To think that would have been played in space while the Challenger had made it into orbit.
    Wow... just wow!!

I never get tired of watching this concert over and over again. Not only because of its symbolism, but also because of the breath of energy and encouragement it transmits to me every time I listen to Jean Michel Jarre's music, especially Rendez-Vous 4.
I wish I had been born to see it live.

Some people might need to read the recent MIchel Geiss interview. He explained why concerts like this one were mostly playback. In a nutshell:
This is a one off concert. It will not be repeated the following day. If something breaks you don't get a second chance.
The recent tours are live because, if there's a mistake, who cares, they can just try again tomorrow night or the night after. A one off concert on this scale is expected to be perfect, concerts as part of a tour less so.

I was there in '86 too! I wish someone would maybe clean up the cloud cover and enhance the focus on the projections on the buildings. this was the highlight of my concert life, the only reason i did not want to part with my video player - my video tape of this!

Bought this vid on VHS in late 86 and it took 3 months for it to arrive in Royal Oak Michigan where I discovered it playing in the Metaphysical and gemstone store. It was over $30 & rare, as it was only available in Texas at the time.
