  • This is my review of the BigScreen Beyond. After using it for the past month.. I have a LOT to say.
This little screen packs a big package.
So happy after 4 years with the Valve Index to finally move on. But.. it's not for everyone. Quite physically.

-- BIGSCREEN TWITCH AMA HAS BEEN MOVED TO TOMORROW (Monday!) Twitch.tv/thrilluwu or Discord.gg/thrill for the ping! --
THIS HEADSET IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. And that's okay. Of course I wish It had a wider field of view and face tracking and eye tracking, but for now.. for a V1.. the BigScreen Beyond is so freakin good. I love that we have a VR market where things like a Pimax headset, Quest 2, Pico 4 etc can all coexist. So many bright things for VR's future.

Nothing. There are literally 5 games you can mention that worth to play and even those are very limited and slow compared to what you got used to during normal gaming. Half Life Alyx is fine, but the graphics quality is way behind nowadays games (and it is not my settings, I am playing it on a 3080). Same goes for Star Wars games. They are looking good at first, but after 10 minutes you will realize how empty those games are, how limited the graphics and how limited the action because of VR.
In my opinion VR right now only good gaming-wise if you are playing simulation games like a car racing or Flight Simulator, Star Wars Squadrons or maybe No Man's Sky (haven't tried with VR but since I put hundreds of hours into that game without VR I can imagine how it would be like).

VR has stagnated for a long time now, pretty much nothing has happened since the quest 2, but this finally feels like a good step forward. shrinking down the headsets is probably the number 1 priority imo, it really doesn't matter how good your headset is if it feels like a massive brick strapped to your face. the idea of being able to put on a headset as fast as putting on a pair of glasses and having pretty much 0 discomfort would be amazing

@@SnrubSourceeye and face tracking is really only important for social VR, though. Social VR is obviously important, but I don't believe eye/face tracking is currently the most important improvement to gain more mainstream appeal. There's eye-tracked foveated rendering, but that's over-hyped, since it only gives about a 10-15% boost to performance. A headset with AR capabilities that barely feels like you're wearing anything but glasses will bring VR to the masses. People will work in them and eventually even wear them in public. Give it time. Face tracking will be standard in a few years. There are just more important things that need to be improved first.

      @ChickentNug ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@Lagoat8 it's kind of hard to do in some places. I live miles outside of the city where I go to school which has 600 residents. There isn't a single recreational activity to do in town and you have to go to another city to even find anything, but there isn't really a lot for a teenager to do in the bigger cities nearby either. Pretty much everyone I know spends their free time at bars, but being an 18 year old that isn't an option. I spend a lot of time thinking about what I could do, and there's legitimately nothing. The only thing I go to town for is to work out for an hour or two. There's nothing else here. The internet is the only thing I can do with my free time other than maybe to just spend hours a day on my own in the woods or some shit (which is fun with friends, but not really a good use of time when you're alone in my opinion). I'd rather just sit at home and watch youtube videos and try to learn something or distract myself with video games. I have friends but we hardly ever hang out (maybe once every month or so) and when we do we just sit on our phones and do nothing.
My point is there aren't "outside" things for a lot of people. Being in nature just for the sake of it can be nice but I think it can be a waste of time if you're not doing it for a particular reason. It also isn't really a great idea when you live in Idaho like me and it's windy and in negative temperatures for the almost 5-month winter we just had. Learning to build a shelter is a decent reason and is something I'm going to try and do with my friends next time we go camping, now that it's summer, but there isn't really anything I can think of aside from that that I can do by myself outside. There is very very little to do in the real world when you don't have friends to do stuff with, and it's pretty depressing honestly. I'm just looking forward to when I can join the Army so I can finally have a purpose in life and not just be coasting everywhere I go

If you don't already come from a valve index and are on team apple then this is such a hard pass.
You'd have to buy a I phone for the face tracking (which is beyond stupid any phone can do that not just overpriced apple products)
You'd need to buy base stations AND index controllers. And have your room big enough to accommodate the base stations.
So it would already cost way over it's already very high 1k price.
And what about other things I see no one mention? What if you got it then lost a lot of weight or got insanely jacked since? Those can radically change your face shape. Would it then cease to fit you at all? Would it then partially fit you but now have light leak? Would it be impossible to remain in the sweet spot?
Seems like it would be the ultimate downfall of such a device. Not to mention if you need glasses then your eyes can change and the prescription you'd get these would with time no longer be your correct ones if you're under 30 yo as your eyes can change still that far out.
That combined with the possible facial changes from life style would turn this from one of the most custom and comfortable headsets to perhaps nearly unusable.
That and no wireless capability defeats some of the purpose behind the minimalist design in regards to how much tech is on your face. If these are going for that glasses feel they need to not require a wire.
Also no built in audio sucks. It would just feel like a incomplete unit and all your audio experience would come down to how good your headphones are, requiring another investment of money just to use this thing.
And self tracking is such a standard now that needing base stations feels incredibly outdated.
I think I'll wait for them to fix some of these with a beyond 2 if it ever makes it to that before I even think about this headset.

I'm makeing the switch soon as I've been saving money. Unless the quest 3 delivers like Mark is saying. Or a new headset pops up with all the bells and whistles.

6:48 I'd like to expand on this a little further for people not so familiar with display technologies. The topic of motion clarity is really nuanced and confusing and honestly not worth explaining to anyone. So I'll keep this as simple as I can. Motion clarity is essentially just a lack of blur. So a display with greater motion clarity, is one with less blur. I don't mean a setting in your display has motion blur enabled like in a video game. Motion clarity is something determined purely from the hardware of your display. You can visualise this by heading to the UFO test website, zooming in and tracking the UFOs with your eyes. You'll notice that the UFO's are blurred no matter how well you try to focus on them. The type of panel (LCD, OLED, Plasma, CRT, etc), refresh rate and tuning/quality of the panel all affect the motion clarity of a display. There are two causes of blur or a lack of motion clarity in a display. These are: ghosting & sample-and-hold blur. Ghosting is actually just a colloquial term for two different types of display artifacts: ghosting (yes I know, confusing. But this one is just a ghost of an object trailing behind it) and inverse-ghosting/coronas (the same as ghosting but the object is a different colour). Both of these artifacts contribute to what we call motion-blur in a display. You don't really need to know the specifics of either of these but essentially, they are caused by the tuning of the response times in your display as well the quality of your panel. A higher quality panel, technologically superior panel will have faster response times and hence, better overall motion clarity (in this case, a reduction in ghosting) than one with slower response times. However, you could tune a similar panel to work faster than before by enabling something called an overdrive mode, which literally pushes the response time of the panel faster. However, go too fast and you'll get inverse-ghosting. This is what makes OLED panels so superior to LCD panels. OLED panels have almost instant response time leading to ZERO perceivable ghosting (it's still there but impossible to see irl). OLEDs still have to deal with the other half of the issue which is with sample-and-hold blur. Sample-and-hold blur is, in a nut shell, caused by a fundamental difference in how motion is shown on a display and how our eyes track a moving object. This is sorta hard to explain but essentially, when you track an object with your eyes, that is moving at a constant rate, your eyes too will be moving at a constant rate. However, motion on a display is never shown at a constant rate. Objects basically take tiny sub-millimeter steps across your screen at a rate determined by your screen's refresh rate. The objects are never CONSTANTLY moving, they teleport slightly and stop as new images are displayed every refresh. This is shown greatly in the ufo persistence test (same link as the one before just add /persistence to the end) where the image literally completely changes as you start to focus on the moving object. Basically, to stop this blur from happening, you just increase the refresh rate. More refreshes means more closely constant rate of movement and less blur. So that's it then. Motion clarity is the product of response time and refresh rate. Generally, the motion clarity difference of an increase in refresh rate is lower than the switch from LCD to OLED, which is why Thrill didn't mind the lowered refresh rate of the OLED in his headset. Ideally, we'd have high refresh rate, high resolution, oled panels in our headsets. But that technology is, for now, out of reach, really hard to cool or REALLY expensive.

Along with that, a high res, high refresh oled monitor is already over $1k, a vr headset that has that but packed into such a small area would probably cost even more I dunno. Just random guesses I don't work with this stuff

I have watched your videos for years but haven't played VR. I recently played VR for the first time while high on LSA and now I feel like buying something high end. VR looks so much better when you actually have the headset on your head and you are not just seeing it in a TH-cam video.

It's weird, I'm still in love with my Reverb G2 (due to the incredible resolution/clairty and audio) but I also feel like I spent a lot of money on a kit that isn't upgradeable. If a controller eventually dies it will be REALLY expensive and a massive headache to find a used one. If I went for a Valve Index it would've been more expensive to start with, but at the same time I would have invested my hard earned money into an eco-system that could be upgraded over time. I REALLY love what BigScreen Beyond is doing. and I can only hope that the future of Valve's own headsets will go towards this direction. Hopefully I will be able to sell my G2 and finally invest in a lighthouse system. (unless nothing better comes out)

Definitely exciting to see where this goes and will keep an eye on it. Had my Index since launch and while I love it and it was an enormous upgrade from my OG Vive, a smaller form factor would be great. Often times I accidentally smack my headset trying to eat or drink something in VR, or using a gunstock can be a little cumbersome with the large form factor of the Index.

One of the gripes I had with my Quest 2 was the sheet weight and size in front of my head. That, and it was never designed for my face and nose shape - light would always bleed through and the weight would literally drag my head down. It's great that a company considered this drawback and designed a headset to reduce this issue!
