    I love how short your video's and tutorials are. You tell us what we need to know and you don't stretch everything out or bullshit about stuff that doesn't matter just to get to that 10 minute mark. Well done!!!

    For crop sensor cameras, use your full frame equivalent focal length. If your camera has a 1.5 crop factor, take your focal length and multiply it by 1.5. Then divide that number into 500.

      Mango Street why no wide angle lens for crop sensors?

    • @MangoStreet
      @MangoStreet  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Alexandre de Terwangne 35mm here is referring to the size of a full-frame sensor, not a lens. So if you're shooting on a crop sensor, multiply your focal length by its crop factor. Divide that into 500.

    I'd also suggest wrapping any camera strap around your tripod or taking it off completely. Any wind may cause the strap to continously tap on the tripod or camera body, resulting in minimal camera shake.

    Awesome as always, thanks! I may add another important, although not photographic, suggestion:
    5. Wear or at least take warm clothes with you (gloves!), since temperatures may drop significantly during night time.
    You don't want to break up your session just because you're freezing. ;-)

    For focusing on close objects, I actually use a green laser (mounted on the camera). It works great, and I can simply point the camera wherever I want.

    And for focusing on infinity I have left a pencil mark on my lens. During the day I focused on an infinitely far object (like clouds) then left the mark on it. During the night, I just bring the focus ring to the mark.

    Something important that kinda got missed: *When you use live-view to focus on the stars, zoom in with live view's digital magnification (the + and - buttons) instead of zooming in your lens. This can mess up your focus.*
    Not all lenses have equivalent focal range at the telephoto end, so if you zoom in with the lens and focus, then zoom back out, subjects will be blurry.

    • @MangoStreet
      @MangoStreet  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we weren't using or recommending a zoom lens, though 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @mcbrian
      @mcbrian 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know, I'm just mentioning it since lots of people use kit lenses or wide zooms which are usually the worst offenders of this. Not everyone can afford a 24mm f1.4...

    For ISO go as high as you can go while still keeping the noise in check. Keep the shutter as long as you can while still keeping the stars sharp. Then adjust the aperture. If you can use a slightly higher number you will have a sharper image and a larger DOF. Most modern cameras handle higher ISO pretty well and is easy to correct in lightroom/photoshop. The most important thing is the experiment though. See how bright you can make the image while still being able to recover those highlights. Test out different aperture settings. Test out different ISO (just calculate the same exposure settings so it should look the same. If there are foreground elements somewhat close by use a flashlight (which you should always have with you while doing night shooting anyways) and paint them with light so you dont need to push the shadows too much after the fact. For the most part noise will mostly show up while pushing the shadows. If you can get away with not pushing those shadows you wont have as much noise and will be able to get away with using a higher ISO.

    Hey you guys! awsome work on your channel. Just wanted to add one extra tip that've found useful over time. If you are working with low budget kit lenses is best to disable the image stabilization option on the lens (if available) IS for canons VR for nikons etc... I've come to see that these lenses tend to shift a bit after you get the focus nailed. It's just how they're built. after a while in the same focus posision they turn this off and a shift occurs. I hope this contributes with something. Keep up the good work! greatings from Portugal! =)

    A question and a comment.
    Question: Is it necessary to focus, or can you just set the focus to infinity, since the stars are so far away?
    Comment: Thanks for keeping the video short. I watched a different video earlier about "Top 5 things..." and it was over 10 minutes long, and driving me crazy. I should have just read the article instead!! Thanks again!

    It's quite hard to get the focus right using the liveview since at least in mine, the image on the screen is usually pitch black even with the highest aperture I have (f/1.8).
    So it's better to try to focus on a visible object in the distance in the landscape like a light, or a really bright star like Sirius or Betelgeuse or Vega, or even the moon.

      I should've said this in the video because so many people have said this. When you have a wide angle lens and need to focus far away, it's pretty easy to get your entire bg in focus -- even with a low aperture.
