They spent three weeks teaching this to us at school when I did my GCSE in art. You did it in under five minutes. And made it ten times more enjoyable than those eight hours I spent in a classroom.
becki groves This is a very very short introduction to color psychology, color is a huge topic. Internet tutorials are a complementary study, not a formal and professional study.
Of course internet tutorials are not formal and professional study, but my point is that I learnt more in five minutes than I learnt in eight hours of class time because of Rachel and Daniel's efficient teaching style and the inefficiency of the teaching style of the school I went to. To see whether what we were taught at school was any more in depth than this and I had just forgotten (which would also emphasise my point), I actually dug out my old books and went through them. School went just slightly deeper, and explained which colours to use for which emotions, but I did not remember any of it because not only did they spend a lot longer explaining the basics which did not need so long explaining, but they did not do it in such an active and memorable way. Rachel and Daniel went out and photographed two colours to show how they affected the mood of an image, whereas in school we were just told what each colour did and told to experiment without being given any demonstration. So yes, I am not going to get a qualification from watching a Mango Street Tutorial, but just because I have a GCSE in art, it does not mean I have the ability to paint a perfect replica of the Mona Lisa, either.
If you two ever write a book I promise I will buy a copy, do you realise just how talented you both are? We all know there are photographers on TH-cam that don’t know one end of the camera from the other, but I can only think of a couple that are as good as you for working with models and still life. You two are unique, from choosing your models, to what they wear, to your poses right through to your post editing has me blown away. It’s that extra thing beyond pressing a shutter and getting the right exposure that’s very special indeed. Every video I think it can’t be as good as the previous one and every video you produce something better. I use the colour themes in Photoshop and then create a gradient layer using the the palette I’m given and whichever ever rules I’m following, I then go through all the different layer options such as normal, soft light, overlay etc. It’s amazing the difference it can make to a landscape. Thank you for giving me that photographers name last week, an amazing photographer.
Thanks, as always, for the support, Mark! We always get excited to see your kind words in the mix. Glad you enjoyed Hideaki Hamada's work! We're huge fans of his. Where can we find your landscape photography? We'd love to check it out!
Mango Street Long story but basically I’m very aware of my expiry date due to a very unusual condition. This condition means I cannot commit myself to anything as I never know how I will be from one day to the next so I don’t have a website. It also means I spend an awful lot of time in bed watching TH-cam. I sell prints in the old fashioned way of putting them in certain outlets and people buy them when they see them. The money then goes to a disability charity I’m passionate about, I met my wife there and I’m an advisor for them. I've tried 500px and Instagram but never really took to either, so because of all that I don’t have any work to speak of online. I did recently post one on twitter, of some God rays my twitter name is @llb_mark but I think that’s the only one still online.
So for those of you that see this and get overwhelmed at the thought of picking a location, outfit, and accessories that obey color theory, or if you don't shoot people, just keep in mind that this is a tool to help you recognize why a particular photo is very pleasing, and also a tool to help you in your post shoot editing process. Remember, if you're a Lightroom user you have color sliders that you can use to adjust hue and saturation of everything in your photo. So if you photo is close to having a triadic color palette but there's is a non-trivial amount of color that is distracting, you can possibly turn the saturation down on that one. Also, what are the most abundant colors outside? Green usually, yellow in the fall depending where you are, muted white/gray in the winter. Find a model who's willing to wear a solid color jacket and head outside! Easy peasy.
Hey! So I want to go to photography school IN Jan on month away and It is not going to be possible unless I use social media to my benefit! Help me by donating or sharing it on your Facebook! www.gofundme.com/9avff-photography-school
You guys are awesome! Honestly it’s hard to find content like this with regards to photography! It’s all encompassing not just how to use a camera but how to compose and make a more engaging photo! Keep it up!
i have a couple things that i'd love to see videos about from you two (three if you count carlton b/c i want him in every video???): 1. styling photographs (outfits and locations) 2. finding models 3. getting models comfortable in front of the camera (maybe an extension of the "shooting non-models" video, but more about fine-art/editorial posing since that can get sort of awkward and then you can see it in the facial expression) 4. breaking your photography habits those are the things i struggle with the most!
this helps a lot because normally i do photography with nature with a low quality camera. This inspires me a lot because i study in my spare time photography because when i am older it would be my dream job.You guys make me learn or inspire me with fully creative ideas for know and the future.Thank you Maya.
Great work once again, guys! I've learned about colour theory relating to graphic design but never really thought about how it applies to photography as well.
Thanks, man. I've quite a bit of photography now and I always thought about the colour theory when picking a shot/editing, but I didn't think so much about it when doing little bit of graphic design. Which do you usually pick when selecting of the complementary, split complementary, triadic and analogous?
I like how colour theory is briefly mentioned, then some apps and straight into, "Once you've picked your palate, it's time to go shoot." The reality is, colourist for film, video games, fashion houses, paint manufactures etc all study colour theory for a decade or so. I say this to be discouraging, but appreciate when you see a stunning collection of cohesive colours..99% chance that creator has worked on their personal choices and combo's for years. It makes you appreciate films like, "My brother where art thou." or "The grand Budapest hotel." just how much work and selection goes into creating a continuity of colour.
Mind. Blown. It’s almost like fate drew me to this video. I’ve been struggling how to go about planning future shoots and I feel like I have a base to start off now. Thank you soooooooooo much! I had to hug the like button for this one :D
Dude is good... composition is spot on... but holy, Rachel (Rachelle?) is a genius with the models. LOVE how her mind works. Every shot has something unique in it, even if we've seen the overall idea before. So well done.
I go to art school in New York studying photography and I learn more from your videos than I have this entire year in classes. Maybe I should drop out and move to LA to become friends with you guys lol
Within the past month and a half or so, I've really dove into color theory and I've even picked up a few books on the topic... definitely a well timed upload XD
Something I’ve always wondered as a beginning photographer is do you (the photographers) purchase the wardrobe for shoots, or is that up to the model. Do you keep the wardrobes? Do you return them afterwards?
People need to understand that any art form requires so much more than just learning about the medium you're pursuing. Joey Lawrence (which takes fantastic photos) studied dutch paintings for his compositions. So yeah great video guys :)
Great video guy's! Really opened my eyes to how color matching draws you to an image. Would really like to see how you edited these pictures in post. The finished images looked awesome.
I like the synergy between your IG and TH-cam. Seeing the posts on IG made me anticipate this TH-cam post. Another great video and another great set of captures!
I’m sorry if you’ve got this question a million times, but which lens do you use in this video? I’m trying to look for a lens good for portraits / shooting people. Thanks in advance!
You guys absolutely ROCK! How on Earth you don't have MUCH MORE followers is beyond me. Brief, precise explanations with stunning photos. Truly professionals. I think you are definitely doing some magic here ... happy to follow you guys further...
Amazing stuff as always!! Been looking for a video to talk about color theory that's not 3 hours long haha. Side note..can we get a tutorial on changing the colors of the wardrobe in post?
This Adobe color is money! Thanks for the quick and concise version of Color Theory. I carefully selected the like button since I'm smashed the subscribe button a few weeks back 😎
Yes! Subscribed! I save my subscriptions for channels I really want to support. I honestly think the future of education is in short interactive videos! Nice one guys.
we have short attention spans, so we feel your pain. our goal is to never waste anyone's time, so we always try to get to the point as quickly as possible.
Hey, i'd love to see how you work with darker skin tones like deep to rich. I love a clean white aesthetic and find that this works beautifully with my skin tone - however, I struggle to play around with dark greens and blues and low lighting. Do you guys have any advice or expertise on that?
Very informative and good insight in colour theory, Thanks for another great video. and yeah finally understood the meaning of colour theory will use it in my upcoming shoots. Thank you Mango Street.
Hey, thanks for putting up great content. After seeing this video I was left with a question though... after creating a color palette can I use it in either lightroom or photoshop to edit my pictures? How?
not really. you should really use the palette for inspiration when setting up a shoot. if you can capture the colors you want in camera, it makes editing so much easier :)
They spent three weeks teaching this to us at school when I did my GCSE in art. You did it in under five minutes. And made it ten times more enjoyable than those eight hours I spent in a classroom.
Lol same the amount of times we had tutorial sessions about it and no one got it

Mark Harris PREACH SAMEE
Mark Harris omg I would buy it too!!! They should definitely put something together
if they did write a book i would get it and i'm not even into photography i just want it for the artistic enrichment

Song: Marc Robillard - Time Stood Still
you guys are so awesome at creating short but super informative videos! I can tell you put a lot of time into this!
Great work once again, guys! I've learned about colour theory relating to graphic design but never really thought about how it applies to photography as well.
Ricky Martin!
Mango Street!

Ricky Martin yeah it’s an important aspect which I’ve never gave much thoughtb
Hey is it just me... or was that first circle purple and not pink ( I feel like im colorblind ?!?! )
Anj Oliveria sammme
SAME
I WAS LOOKING AROUND FOR PINK OBJECTS IN THE ROOM IN CASE
it's purple dont worry
except when they list the colors. it's odd.... how they used purple and pink...
Thats what I thought! I thought that was purple and not pink... :O But still amazing shots!!!
i thought it would be easy peasy lemon squeezy but instead it's next level difficult difficult lemon difficult
Why pay for photography classes when Mango Street teaches you everything (for free). More power to the two of you. ♡ Bless you ♡
This channel's got AESTHETICS AF

Absolutely mesmerized by this shoot! Beautiful!
Color tone really impacts the photo. This color theory was taught by my teacher in my highschool class. Love it

Great info! I've only heard of using colors opposite of each other on the color wheel.
I go to art school in New York studying photography and I learn more from your videos than I have this entire year in classes. Maybe I should drop out and move to LA to become friends with you guys lol

Amazing video!! Very refreshing after all I've seen so far...
Do you guys think you could do a more in depth video on how to put the colour pallette into use in our edited?
/ how to use adobe colour for dummies?
I was literally googling color theory the whole day, then got notification of this awesome vid. Our minds must be connected.
Another awesome video! 👊 Will definitely pay attention on color palettes before a shoot next time. 😉
Love your videos!! I learn so much each time I watch one.

Amazing video! Thanks a bunch. Also, what was the song playing during the shoots?!
Excellent photography and models. Thanks! I hope to find good apps for this ^_^
You guys do such high production shoots just for tutorials? I'm slightly amazed. Do you also do commercial work or only weddings?
