In Pic S3, Picard describes Riker as the "handsome elder statesman of Starfleet." I think that applies to his real-world Trek contributions as well. Any time I see "Directed by: Jonathan Frakes" I get a boost of confidence that the episode is going be a notch or two better. Regardless of the show. He's also tying it all together. Riker (and the Titan) showing up in Lower Decks, throughout ST:Picard, and even the unpopular ending of ENT, adds a layer of continuity to it all that I very much appreciate.
I'm very happy that Frakes still is involved in all the new Trek. He made such a good job on First Contact, and it's great that we can keep enjoying his directing work on the new shows.
I love interviews like this. I was about 10 when TNG was first aired, and even though I knew it wasn't real, it still felt magical. I couldn't imagine the actors being regular people working a job. A small part of my brain felt like they were really in space. I'm so glad I got to see TNG through the eyes of a child, and it's fascinating as an adult to hear these real-life stories from Katee and Jonathan. Thanks for doing such great work, and also for respecting fans even when things get... malodorous.
It was refreshing to hear your tales of attending conventions. I have never gone to one. Thank you for your continuing input to the history of science fiction.
I miss the old small cons, that were small and personal. I remember my first convention in Glasgow and the main guest was George Takei. I took my 8 year old son at the time who was absolutely thrilled as it was at the time of the release of the Undiscovered Country. George was so thrilled and excited about Captain Sulu getting his own command. We had a great conversation about this in the bar at the hotel. I don’t go to the large cons anymore because I feel that they are too big, too expensive and just out to fleece the fans.
I used to work a few of those. Back in the day Mark Lenard, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan were regulars. They were there every year, they'd talk to other people to come along, they were fantastic guests.
Jonathan Frakes comment about fans being over excited and doing things they normally wouldn’t do is so true. I actually tried to shake his hand at a photo shoot, which he graciously offered a fist bump instead and I realized poor Jonathan could be uncomfortable over so many years shaking hands with strangers and probably getting sick. Anyways thank you Jonathan for the fist bump, next time I’ll control the impulse to want to shake hands.
I wanted to marry either Dirk Benedict or Richard Hatch. I had their pictures from Teen Beat Magazine on my wall. I was a Teenager and I didn't realize how old they were either. Earlier wanted to marry Captain Kirk, Spock, or McCoy. In like 2nd grade I played Nurse Chapel along with a couple of classmates who played Bones and Captain Kirk or Spock. I watch TOS on TV, we only had three channels. NBC CBS and ABC.
I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting with Hatch at Dragon Con a few years before he died and told him how amazing he was in the BSG reboot and he was genuinely appreciative of that. Such a nice guy and talented actor who should have gotten WAY more opportunities to display that. But I think he knew that he knocked it out of the park.
@@SAntczak2 ... And the eerie thing about the BSG reboot/reimagining is that it would not have happened if it wasn't for Richard Hatch & his personal passion to reboot/continue the original BSG with his promo concept trailer "The Second Coming" in 1999. That trailer is what got the ball rolling & was what made Universal Studios decide to make their own version & not Richard's vision, as Richard had also been pitching to them beginning in the 1990's. I remember always going to the BSG fan websites back then in the '90's to see how Richard was doing with his push for it. In the end, it did not work out for Richard & he was disappointed that Universal went a different direction, but through some serendipity, Ron Moore invited Richard to be a guest on the new show as an homage, but as a different character, which then that turned into him becoming a permanent character for many episodes until Zarek's demise. Many OG fans including me were happy to see him in the same franchise, albeit a different universe. There are some things in the 2003 reimagining that actually came from previous BSG's (well the whole 2003 version is an homage anyway), such as the human Cylons were an idea from Galactica 1980 & the crescent-shaped Raiders were from Richard's concept trailer. Now there is rumor of a new Galactica show (Sam Esmail), but it has been hush-hush, which seems like it is still speculation & rumor, so no one knows if it is ever going to be released. However, at this point, it appears it never got greenlit, so now we will have to wait many more years (or decades?) until another BSG comes along. So yeah, thanks to Richard, he inadvertently ushered in the 2003 version & kinda helped give the BSG franchise a new look & new fans 2 decades ago. I was a fan of the original first, of course, but also became a fan of the 2003 one. But there are fans who are still fiercely divided, some prefer the OG, while some prefer the 2003 one. 10/26/24
I love that you talked about DragonCon! I went for like 10 or so years in a row before I finally had my fill. The con stench is no joke either. I stayed at the Marriott Marquis (aka The Mother Ship) one time and when you're in your room it's fine but when you open the door to leave... OMG it's like the entire hotel is a wind tunnel of BO. It really knocks you back!
I suggest people follow the 6-2-1 rule for conventions. Six hours of sleep, two sit down meals (breakfast & dinner, forage for lunch) and one shower per day.
@@BodaciousWench Absolute gold. I'm playing guide to a friend and her son going to their first DragonCon next year, so I have the next several months to drill this and other tips like "for the love of Crom stay hydrated" into them.
My only Convention experience (except helping run our small college Anime con once) was completely accidental: I went with my wife to a meeting for her work in Chicago, and I was going up in the elevator when who walks on but Levar Burton! Later on, I saw him meeting up with Michael Dorn and Jonathan Frakes in the lobby. Turned out the hotel was literally right next door to the convention center, which had a con going that weekend, and at least some of the special guests were staying there. I don't know how we got rooms, except that the medical meeting my wife was attending must have had a block reserved. So that evening we walked across the street and got tickets to the Next Gen panel, which was in a separate auditorium, and wasn't super full for some reason. It was a pretty good time.
haha when they started talking about Dragoncon it brought me back. It's absolutely one day too long, but if it was shorter it would feel one day too short! and LMAO the "olfactory factor"
Calgary expo is one of the biggest ones in Canada and it starts on thursday and runs to sunday. It's thursday at 4pm, thursday is chill, you can use it to explore vendors. I like it.
4 days is too long? No one tell her Dragon Con is actually 5 official days (Thurs - Mon) and a lot of people show up on Wednesday for the 'count down to con' party in the Marriott attrium.
GREAT STUFF!! Need to click the full episode! I was always very VERY bummed that the BIONIC WOMAN didn't happen. I think Michelle running 60 mph in heels didn't help! Anyway your character was awesome! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I wonder if any of these guys were fans of Farscape BSG obviously ran with some of the ideas from Farscape like the whole Harvey bit with Baltar. BSG was clearly at the time the biggest budget sci fi show I had ever seen. There are some parallels with Fringe as well.
I prefer the Beard. I didn't want to watch TNG originally. Die hard TOS fan, but I finally watched a couple of Season 1 episodes. I didn't like them. Later I saw some later ones. Then I was hooked and went back and watched all of Season 1 and beyond. Loved Star Trek Picard. Voyager is my favorite. My late husband finally got me to watch DS9. Love Enterprise. Captain Archer. Quantum Leap.
Since I went to one I have felt that the cons are kinda scummy. They fleece the fans, and I felt bad for the celebs. I saw some really weird behavior. One of the panels I went to had the girl that played Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Deadpool. They asked her what the strangest thing a fan had given her was and without hesitation she said "a kiss". It was a surprise kiss, dude was thrown out, but still. She kinda laughed it off, but I was pretty disgusted by my fellow humans that day. Met Marina Sirtis that day though, she was very nice.
