Great clip. I always wondered if the fact that ST:TNG is the only series (besides TOS, of course) that made the leap from the small screen to the big one was related to how well the cast got along together (& if this helped them to bond even closer, compared with the DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, etc. casts)
It sounds like each of them called eachother out when their egos got in the way - and that led to a level of commraderie and friendship that has endured over time. The famous story is Denise Crosby telling Royal Shakespeare Company vet Patrick Stewart to lighten up and he was a big enough man to suck it up and do just that!
Marina's accent still catches me off guard every time. For the longest time, up to about maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I had no idea she is English. The first time I heard her speak out of character, I was absolutely blown away, like NOOOOOO FRIGGIN WAY !!! She did the " American" accent so well.
Such Great characters they all played. Great memories I grew up with. I was in love with Marina Sirtis of course! God bless them all for entertaining us!
When they green-lighted ST: TNG, nobody really had a feel for how well the show would do. When Patrick Stewart expressed hesitation at committing to a TV series and abandoning the stage, he was told not to worry, that the show would probably be cancelled after a few episodes. In short, it was a low stakes environment, so I think everybody adopted the attitude "Let's have fun and we'll see how this goes." By the time they launched DS9 and Voyager, it had become Star Trek: The Franchise, so I think the cast and crew on those shows felt much more pressure to deliver ratings.
In my professional experience the Trickle Down Theory could not be more valid. You have managers who screw you into the ground, the attitude is contagious. After getting royally screwed a half-dozen times, all you want to do is screw your neighbor before you get it again. And the same is true of good managers - they treat you with respect, and all you want to do is pass on the respect to everyone else.
Yeah, I heard that story about Shatner being a little too full of himself on set of TOS, meanwhile Nimoy was the exact opposite. When Leonard passed away, it is amazing the number of heartfelt character tributes he got from people that worked with him. IMHO Shatner could have learned a lot from Leonard as well as the TNG gang.
There's often one - usually portrays a central character - who looks down on others. Reportedly Arthur Lowe looked down on others in Dad's Army. I think the issue is ego. Sean Bean (Sharpe in the 1980s) didn't have a huge ego and got on well with the others. Shatner appears to have a bigger ego. Also when two or more such egos clash they are guaranteed not to get on. Perhaps that was the case with TOS' cast.
Rather than explain why the TNG cast got on well, I would like to know why the TOS cast got on so badly. There's been a lot of talk but none of it ever made sense to me. For the original cast, Star Trek was just a job at the beginning. When they were hired they couldn't have known whether it would last more than a season, let alone become a multi-decade phenomenon in syndication and movies. Later they were typecast for their entire careers, but always in the shadow of Shatner. That has to make you a bit bitter. The exception was Nimoy, who eventually embraced the legacy of Spock as the character's profile grew over the years. In contrast, the TNG cast were joining an established franchise and knew what they were getting into. They were probably also fans of Star Treks to some extent, so they would have had much more in common with each other.
I think it was because the ensemble of TOS was paid a lot less, for a lot of work, and they each fought for screen time with Shatner. TOS was a low budget, scraping by each episode, show. TNG had a major production budget, and each character got a couple of episodes focused on them each season.
I don't believe that actors are completely typecast when they have big roles like that, I've seen a bunch of actors play multiple well-known characters. For example, I think of Benedict Cumberbatch as being both Dr. Strange and Sherlock.
@@StargateOmega yes she is always talking about talking to him . On social media. ( i was talking to dornie the other day on Twitter) ect . Makes sense. They have known eachother since ? Late 1986 .
TNG are the "gold standard" amongst the different incarnations of Trek where the entire cast got along with each other. The issues among the TOS, DS9 & VOY ensembles are well known. Less is known about ENT, DISC & SNW. I assume there aren't issues with those casts but that's just an assumption.
That's not true! It took the cast almost three years to come together because of projects they all had. In Season 1, Marina was in London doing a play. In December 2019, Marina's husband of 27 years died. Gates, Genie and Jonathan were in France, then Jonathan returned to direct Discovery! LeVar was in New Orleans shooting CSI, then audioned for Jeopardy! Dorn had signed up to do Disney animation series and was rumored to have gotten married. Get the picture! Had Patrick told everyone one year in advance, they might have all been able to make it!
Why does that bother you? If her castmates accept her as she is, then why can't you? Over the years she's "dialled" it back a lot! If you want to know something, the women of Trek are more intellectual than some of the men. While Patrick, Wil, LeVar and Michael didn't graduate uni, Gates, Marina, Brent and Jonathan did. Gates also teaches acting and theater classes while Marina mentors many actors with whom she works. Patrick once declined to help a doctoral student with his dissertation while Gates and Marina answered some pretty intense questions reguarding interpretation of Shakespeare!
@@fredrika27marina may have an attitude that some people don't like she loves fans...she is always praising trek fans for paying for her house and car and giving her long term work on tng. She seems really down to earth and totally understands how paychecks and work security happen.
@leeannasloan2292 I've been a fan for over 30 years because of everything you just wrote! What I found sad about Star Trek Picard was how underused her character actually was. Marina got less than 20 minutes screen time in ten episodes. After all Troi did for Jake and the crew, they didn't promote here nor give her a scene outside her job titles of grieving wife and counselor. I found it quite insulting that Jake brags about being a nepo baby, but the writer couldn't find one line to praise Troi!
Well, truth be told, over the 170+ episodes, she didn’t have much to say to begin with. And it must’ve been frustrating for her, not to have her five minutes of attention in each episode, like the rest of the cast. Apart from Heaven, The Child and Face of the Enemy, she was reduced to „I sense they’re out there, captain.“ And after the „brilliant“ idea, to bring in Guinan, who was more of a counsellor, than a bartender, Sirtis knew she was lucky that the producers decided to still keep her around. She had more interesting lines in Voyager, than in TNG. I met her in Bonn, years ago. And I knew that she would be verbal. After all, she’s paid to entertain, and she’s giving her best on stage. We have to blame Roddenberry for reducing her to cleavage and wigs. Her character had potential, but the writers didn’t have the imagination, to give Troi the spot that she deserved.
@@Der_Dolmetscher That's very true what you wrote. However, Gates also only had a few episodes where she could really shine, but they gave her an excellent role in Picard just like they did when she did Descent I & II. My issue is if they can write excellent roles for Patrick, Gates, Brent, Jonathan, Jeri, Amanda, John, Ed and Todd, why the h@ll can't they get off their lazy a$$es and do the same for Marina. They allow guests actors to come on and get better roles, but ignore Marina along with LeVar and Michael. Then they try to placate viewers by saying there wasn't enough time. It's all BS!!! They are lazy and I'm calling them out on it. Terry along with the other writers KNEW that Marina along with LeVar and Michael rarely got anything to do in the series and four movies. Marina did get lucky with Nepenthe, but what was she playing: the grieving mother. What's worse the last time I actually heard Troi have an intelligent conversation with Picard was in the Ensigns of Command when they had a conversation about language and what it meant. The nail on Troi's coffin was the Enterprise episode in which the studio lied to them. It's really sad situation. I have lost respect for Stewart and his writing staff. Yes, there is an issue of like: both Gates and Jonathon know how to work the system because we see what they get. That said, brown nosing shouldn't have to be done to get descent representation for the ENTIRE ensemble cast. Then fans wonder why Picard wasn't accepted: it wasn't accepted because all it did was belittle the characters fans love, don't give characters like Troi descent story arcs and kill off beloved characters like Hugh, Ro and Shelby. What a waste! But here were are and this will be Patrick's and Terry's legacy.
The comradery and chemistry is part of the magic of this show. The universe was smiling on all of us!
Gene Roddenberry was a man of the people and saw in people things that most don't. He loved humanity.
Michael Dorn is a very accomplished pilot as well 👍 Great guy with common sense 👏

I think they answered that question (4:20mins)very nicely in Picard S3 Ep9&10.....
Yet in Generations, the bridge WAS redecorated (consoles on the side walls) but they forgot about that in PIC.
