Every time I hear you go through this I continue to be completely amazed … the thought has crossed my mind that I have been listening to a human calculator for the past 30 minutes 😂😂😂..you are an amazing master mind of grocery hauls!😊
When you buy ingredient staples . You can make so much more . It's impressive to see you go through everything you bought , using it without waste .I love your channel so glad I found you .
Not sure how you were on my feed but glad it was.Now here’s the thing,I’m a 74 yr.old American great grams who enjoys watching the vids! I love your smarts. It’s our Independence Day today and my plans are to watch as many of your videos as I can! I have Theramix envy! I enjoy watching you cook !
Thanks so much for this chat. I especially appreciate that you take the extra time to explain all the details and reasons why you do so much planning. Wow I’m exhausted just listening to how you shop and plan. I literally have a magnetic notelet on my fridge door and I write on it my shopping list as I find I need something! 🤣. That said I live two minutes from a supermarket not the three hours you do 🙈. You do an amazing job. Btw it was me who said about the semolina in crumble but you don’t need to buy the fine stuff for it. If you use course in other stuff just use it. I do. It gives a lovely biscuity flavour to the crumble. X
Extraordinary job! You continually amaze me with how you prepare, pre plan and execute your shopping trips. Though you might grumble and swear (off camera, of course🤣) when things go haywire, you always get through it with a smile on your face! I love that you never just say “screw it”! 😂😂😂 You are truly an enigma🥰
You are absolutely correct about Costco being more affordable if you are mindful about what you buy, and how much scratch cooking you do. If you buy more prepared foods, you will always spend more, no matter where you shop. Also knowing prices of the items that you buy, and how to determine if the price currently is a lower price, or if it is higher then, skip it this month. 😊
Listening to you chat about meal planning vs inventory makes so much sense. I didn’t realise that I was actually doing the inventory style of meal prepping all along…there you go….love your video and look forward to seeing how you use your groceries….❤
We live in rural WA so we bulk buy what we can and our last costco trip we spent about $800, only on things we use and need, and when we did a price comparison with Coles, we saved almost $500 compared to what we would have if we had just gotten those things in our fortnightly shop and those items will last 6 of us roughly 5-6 months. I definitely think that if you take the time to play the game, you can absolutely save big with costco. And i have zero risk of running out of flour 😂😭
You clever girl. I just love love your videos. You could start an online Zoom business teaching people how to plan, shop and cook meals. Debi in Vicksburg, MS, USA 🥰🥰
Nyssa, thank you. It reminds me of when my 5 children were small, and there were 3 adults. We lived on a smallholding. I had sort of forgotten the shear volume of food we had to make. And buy.
In our small City the biggest and most profitable business is a place called Sticker Mule. They make stickers. You may wonder how they could possibly be so profitable. Think of all of the things stickers are on. Advertisments, bar codes, toys, etc... I'm telling you this because I think you would be a great designer for a business like that. You're great at what you do with design. Amsterdam, NY. That's where Sticker Mule is.
Excellent video. You explained everything so well. Yes, ingredient household and meal rhythm rather than meal plan here works so well. Writing just a few meal ideas for the week based on what I know I have ready to use and the other meals are based on what's ready in my garden , is given to us or comes in the veg box. Fantastic video Nyssa ❤
I shop a bit like you that I have a running dialogue through my head while i"m shopping oh I could do this or that I do film a lot but then I have to voice over and I swear I get so excited about my own plans and ideas LOL. I'm not a huge Costco shopper either as you mentioned it's about what value suits your family. For us it just isn't there but the experience oh especially at Christmas I love just looking at everything!!!!
Hi Thankyou for your reminder that often ingredients can be used in multiple recipes. When I use up my three jars of mayonnaise that are in my pantry. I will be making my own.. Your videos definitely keep increasing my knowledge
Costco is still worthwhile for our family. But we stick with a list of essentials, bread, chicken, eggs, limited fruit, baking products like cocoa, etc. With the occasional treat of frozen perogies or such. While waiting in the check out line it still amazes me what and the quantity people have in their carts 😊
I find it amazing some of the carts that have only a few items too, I don’t think I’d shop at Costco for only a few things! I try and buy treats for the kids mindfully, but generally speaking I’m pretty happy with how I think my trolley would be perceived heh, though I do get looks for the quantity and then I think, it’s a wholesaler! These people with 6 items in their trolley are the weird ones! Not me heh
You are amazing! It's definitely more cost effective to buy the discounted boxes especially when you are so good at preserving it. I too buy just the sale items, especially meat.
Thankyou!,,I have also tried meal planning and it's very difficult for me to stick to the list.An inventory is very time consuming and I have tried it,but am limited to storage space.I will try again,I shop fortnightly due to limited space.I have a large family too and shop the specials especially those that r half price.Well done u have inspired me.x
This has been very helpful to me. Not that I have a large family to shop for.. but different circumstances that have caused a change in the way I shop, this video has given me some helpful ideas to try in my situation! Thank You!
I think it is adaptable to any size kitchen, and I do believe a lot of it is just mindfulness, being more aware of what you use and in what quantities, and what you already have available to you :D
It is kinda confronting when I add it up! But at the same time it makes sense. All my kids love cold pasta as leftovers too, so I’m happy to bump the initial cook up so they have that the next day hehe
Great information and organization...along with a great mind...you remind me of my own Mom...her grocery haul wasnowhere as large as yours ,because a lot of our food was raised at home and canned or frozen even our meat....but she kept her freezers and pantry well stocked..she taught me a lot about homemaking as well as my Granny ...They both believed in feeding people even strangers....
I just found your channel and am so impressed. You have helped me immensly already with ideas to plan for bulk shopping and now I realise mistakes I make. Thankyou so much for sharing
Nyssa, watching this video reminds me of that picture of Einstein with h hair standing on end and smoke coming out his ears! You are a human calculator, and I wish you had been my teacher while I was in school. I most definitely would have learned more in math class! Thank you for this video. I love watching you and your family.
What an excellent video 👏👏👏👏 The way you explained your thoughts and shopping strategies were amazing. Have to admit I get stuck in a bit of rut with shopping so going to be more open in future 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 As always a pleasure to watch thank you Nyssa REALLY appreciate you sharing ❤❤❤ Love from the UK x
I've watched this video 3 times now - we live rural in Western Australia, a good hour away from the nearest coles/woolies. Due any day with baby #5, so really looking to streamline how I do groceries. I currently shop fortnightly, but I'd love to shift to monthly 🙏
Amazing, l kinda shop the same, mostly specials and staples then cook as l go using what is staring at me in the fridge. Always freeze leftovers, they are used when it's been a busy day. Keep it simple but tasty.
i need to adopt your way off shopping and planning, ive been doing it soooo wrong, your way is so cost effective, thank you for sharing this information, you are amazing,, my first step is buying products in the raw form so i can use in a multitude of recipes, brilliant advice xxx
We shop at Costco or Sam’s club once a month. We are family of 3 and both stores are about 20 minutes from my house so I could go more often but it wouldn’t be cost effective for us. We buy certain things in bulk like meat, dairy items, beverages, fruit and some condiments like Mayo, ketchup and also our peanut butter. It works for our family . 😊
I think you have to have a few ideas and set plans running around your head as fall backs and always have the ingredients avail for those! But actual planning is a bit beyond me heh.
My family eat a very different style of food when compared to your family but we are very similar in keeping staples and an ingredient pantry. I did try menu planning pantry but it was so expensive. In my ingredient staples pantry, like you stated, we are not bound to meal X just because it's on the menu.
Yes, for us, I think the ingredient pantry was the big turning point for us to be able to make the change to longer between shops and cheaper than we were, we are lucky that our overheads are so low we can spend what we do on groceries, but even so I think we eat wonderfully for a fairly low price.
Thank you! I do many of the same things you do but I also menu plan. My plan is based on my stock, my schedule, the sales flyers, and kids' requests. They like to see what's up for the week and it keeps them from hoovering up food that is earmarked for a specific dish.
I think if more people are working in a kitchen the meal plans definitely help to make sure food is still there! I’m fairly lucky in that the kids know what is free range and what they have to ask for and nobody else does much of the main cooking, so the inventory in my head is fairly consistent. Though I do have a lock box for my chocolate chips lol, got sick of going to bake and the bag was empty in the fridge! :)
Such an incredibly informative video Nyssa. Your ability to explain your thinking, planning and shopping process is awesome. I will take your tips and apply them to my own shopping. Step one…I’ve downloaded a planner and the supermarket apps as my starting point rather than roaming up and down the aisle looking for specials and then meal planning as I go. 😂. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and insights.
If I was shopping the way you do, which is amazing. I would check every week for the half price staples you use and do a click and deliver to your Mums, as long it was ok with her. That way you could always make the most of all the specials, being a member I don’t think you have to pay for extra deliveries.
I tend to not even look at the specials in between shops, I feel like I might buy something that I may not actually need and end up spending more than I need to because I'm taking advantage of those sales, if that makes sense! I think you have to spend a certain amount for free delivery, but don't quote me on that hehe. Previously as well, mum worked full time in an office, she has only just shifted to working from home full time, so I might have to trial it now that she's home all the time to receive deliveries :)
With kmart just an idea to save time and space when travelling, if you do an online order over $65 you generally get free delivery. If you have a po box and your husband is in town. Could you do that stationary etc order that way and he picks it up?! Just a thought.
I think I prob forgot to mention it! But if you click and collect or shop in store, with OnePass you get 5x the flybuys :). So sometimes I order stuff for home if I need it in between, but I like to do a big shop each trip to take advantage of that as well :D
I enjoyed your video. I did a 12 month trial of a Costco membership and kept track of how much I saved by shopping there. I did save some money by shopping there but I found there was a only a small number of products I could buy that were cheaper than I could find elsewhere (we are vegan) and I was very disappointed with their limited range of legumes. I had hoped to be able to buy a wide variety of legumes in bulk from Costco, but they only ever had red lentils, chickpeas and mung beans. I don’t know how they decided on those 3 types of legumes - there are so many more! In addition, I never enjoyed shopping at Costco. The store is huge, the trolleys are huge and I think that the huge bulk packs of unhealthy goods encourage overconsumption. While I like buying in bulk, since I had to source so many of my legumes, varieties of rice and other whole grains from other companies, it was just as easy for me to buy all my rice and legumes from somewhere else, plus I could get my orders delivered. I agree with you that whether or not Costco is worthwhile depends on what you buy. Because we are vegan and eat lots of fruit, veg, legumes and whole grains, if I lived far away from the supermarkets like you do, the most beneficial way for me to shop would be to go online and compare prices of bulk dry goods from different companies and have them delivered to my mothers house, saving time and energy as well as money. Costco fruit and veg was not a good buy for me either because we can access a greengrocer that usually has great prices, good quality produce and I can buy as little or as much as I want. Your fruit and veg seller sounds excellent. My father, like you, cultivated relationships with various green grocers over the years because we ate lots of fruit and vegetables and he needed to save as much money as he could. Also like you I am not really a meal planner - unless it is a special occasion, I prefer to cook whatever I feel like eating. I know that some people religiously meal plan a month or more ahead but I would find that stressful. If I really don’t feel I can stomach eating something, I find it very difficult to force myself to cook/prepare it and it causes me a lot of anxiety. I am new to your channel. I enjoy seeing people’s fruit and Vegie gardens plus shopping hauls. I don’t know why listening to people talk about their grocery shopping, showing what they bought and how they use the foods appeals to me so much, but it does. I am a fellow Australian. I have lived in Victoria all my life. It is nice to listen to a fellow Aussie on TH-cam - I do get a bit sick of hearing American voices.
Planning meals will save you money. I just can't cook the meals on the days I planned to cook them, either I short myself time wise and I cook something that is quicker. Love how you plan and shop!TFS!!!❤
Their small red potatoes are sometimes a good buy, and their carrots are a pretty standard price, sometimes I buy their broccolini/mushrooms/asparagus too, but rarely any of their fruit, its all too high a price for me :S
I can't get over how much cheaper food is in Australia vs my region of the US. We eat like this as well. Good price, available, eat what we have. A protein, veg, maybe a stretcher for the carb eaters. It is simpler, but not easier. What's for supper? What ever needs to be eaten next! B
I'm not sure that it is once you convert it, from what I have seen! But There are such different pricing ranges throughout the whole US! But everything I'm buying is in $/100g or per kg, not in oz/lb, and our dollar is also worth 1AUD is 0.67USD currently. I thought about doing some conversions etc, because I know I have a lot of US viewers, but it would be a lot of work lol :D
I love Costco. We're also in the country and I find meat is far cheaper at Costco than my local supermarkets and even the local butcher is dearer than Coles and Woolies. Costco also have a better range, and prices, for gluten, dairy and peanut free foods. Adult Son and I go halves in membership. To keep a track of my Costco shopping list, I have downloaded the app, That Shopping List. I only use it for Costco so there's no crossover of different stores.
Thank you Nyssa for your great advice. I was going about shopping so wrong by trying to figure out specific meal plan for everyday so I could shop monthly. Youve got my brain working now.😄
I think some people find meal planning the way to go! It’s not how my brain works though lol, I don’t like having set meals, yes we eat similar meals in rotation, but I like to make choices based on availability, weather and effort for each day heh
I don't think there's a guarantee here, but I did add up my average costings over the year and I at least cover the membership, so I was happy to give it a go, and I'm almost there already with a couple of shops left to go this year.
@@jenniferr2057 I definitely feel like sometimes some of their product isn't necessarily cheaper, but it is better quality for the same price kinda thing.
We shop so alike. I just had to up our oats because it’s winter.. kids will hate it again by August. The only big difference is that my list is in my head. I always forget to take lists so it’s sort of permanently tattooed in my brain lol. I always forget something.
I don't know that I check my lists very often while I shop lol, But the effort and process of collating it all I think is what I need to sink in the quantities I need for that month :D
@@OurSmallFootprint I do write the lists. Maybe that’s how it sticks then? We’re doing a Costco trip next week and I’m dreading it. Although, the bigger bags of spices looked good! We went to an Asian grocer in twmba and got loads of them super cheap so I don’t really need any but it’s exciting to see them in bulk elsewhere.
Every time I hear you go through this I continue to be completely amazed … the thought has crossed my mind that I have been listening to a human calculator for the past 30 minutes 😂😂😂..you are an amazing master mind of grocery hauls!😊

The level of organisation you maintain is seriously impressive! Thanks for sharing how you do your planning.
Planning, shopping, and prepping what you buy is a full time job😊
Well done organization, you know what you need and how much. No going to the store and guessing
I'm in awe at how organised you are it's like a full-time job, planning, shopping and then preparing all the food.
THANK YOU, NYSSA!!!
Thanks so much for this chat. I especially appreciate that you take the extra time to explain all the details and reasons why you do so much planning. It really is practically a full-time job to do things right when it comes to budgeting, purchasing, etc. You are doing it this way to make it turn out better and easier in the long run. You are a wonder. I find myself thinking about things the way you do, so you are a huge influence on your followers. This day and age, it takes it to make a go of it. Many blessings! Very well done and well thought out. You truly have your family's best interests at heart. I admire you very much Nissa!
This is amazing how you plan, keep track of your inventory, and then manage all your food for 9 weeks at a time.
Thank you, It has taken practice to figure it out, but I've got it pretty down pat now!
Wow I’m exhausted just listening to how you shop and plan. I literally have a magnetic notelet on my fridge door and I write on it my shopping list as I find I need something! 🤣. That said I live two minutes from a supermarket not the three hours you do 🙈. You do an amazing job.
@@OurSmallFootprint that makes total sense, I did t even know you could get that many bonus points
@@RebeccaShepherd Bunnings and Kmart both offer it! Works well for me, I shop at both regularly :)
I also find their bulk spice choices odd sometimes lol, like the legumes how do they pick the specific ones to stock but not others!
You are so organized !!
You’re a star in my eyes .
Enjoy all your videos❤
Totally awesome!! ❤❤🙏🙏xxoo
Planning meals will save you money. I just can't cook the meals on the days I planned to cook them, either I short myself time wise and I cook something that is quicker.
Love how you plan and shop!TFS!!!❤
Awesome and informative, as always! Thank you Nyssa!
The thing about Costco is its excellent quality at the best price. Except the fruit and vegetables where it’s hard to get any bargains.
@@OurSmallFootprint It may just be where I live. Either way, it's good for you!
@@OurSmallFootprintI don't think my brain works that way either, lol.
This was very helpful. Thank you. I so enjoy your videos.
At Costco in the US, we are guaranteed to get at least the cost of the membership back with our 2% cash back.
I don't think there's a guarantee here, but I did add up my average costings over the year and I at least cover the membership, so I was happy to give it a go, and I'm almost there already with a couple of shops left to go this year.
@@OurSmallFootprint besides, I just love Costco and the quality of food I feel I am getting.
@@jenniferr2057 I definitely feel like sometimes some of their product isn't necessarily cheaper, but it is better quality for the same price kinda thing.
Awesome! Great video ❤
@@kalnic69 They are a really good price!
Loved this video!! You are amazing xx
Did you ever get around to realising the excel spreadsheet of where it's cheaper per 100gs for woolies/coles/aldi/Costco?
Love all your videos ❤❤
Excellent video!
I alway do Costco every 8 weeks myself I always buy stuff what cheaper then supermarket like laundry detergent fabric conditioner I go with list to
There is definitely stuff cheaper if you look at prices, there's stuff that isn't, of course, but you just have to be mindful I reckon! :D
