The Original Lennon demo. His lyric on the middle section .... “What ever happened to, the life that we once knew?” Then hums because not written yet. Fast forward 20 years Paul fills the blank line with… ”Can we really live without each other?”... Where did we lose the touch that seemed to mean so much?… Always made me feel so free!” I just well up at that point...beautiful and so sad at the same time. Completing and complementing each other even beyond this life x
They were close. Being in a long term band is like a marriage. You get to know each other on a really personal level. Break ups can be devastating too. Life is complicated.

I know a lot of Beatles fans don’t care for Yoko but God bless her for turning over Real Love, Free as a Bird and Now and Then to Paul. I know a lot of people blame her for the breakup of The Beatles but I think true fans should accept that John loved Yoko very much.
For me it was In My Life that drew me in. From there it’s literally 100’s of songs. But my favs are: Here, There, Everywhere, A Day in the Life, Rain, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Across the Universe and Yesterday EDIT: Ok..so it’s April 2022 now. I’m recently OBSESSED with “I’ll Follow the Sun”. I can’t explain it but it’s one those songs I haven’t listened to for years perhaps. Than driving home from work one day it comes on from a playlist and It struck the mood so perfectly, with the weather and scenery and everything. (I live in Colorado sooooo amazing scenery is everywhere) It’s something about it to. The melody from Paul is short, simple but super catchy. After a few listens you’ll find yourself walking around the house singing “One day, you’ll look…to see I’ve gone. For tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun” it’s beautiful…Not sure if I’ll put it in my top 10, but it is damn climbing with each listen.

After 25 years, we finally heard those Beatles harmonies again. A sound that was missing in all of their solo careers. Every Beatle contributed to this song. They worked together again, for the first time in so many years. Magical. This song sounds so incredibly, unmistakingly Beatles. They still had it, and still have it. RIP John and George. Two musical geniuses.
@@Saturn-sd8htGeorge didn’t really find his own signature sound on the guitar until Abbey Road. His slide guitar from there dominates the rest of his career so I always think if the Beatles had stuck it out we would’ve gotten more slide

I honestly can’t listen to this without tearing up. The way they sing together with John, the memories of a lost time, brought together again in this song.
Darth JooJ Same, I’m so nostalgic for a time I never lived in, it‘s so strange. I am genuinely heartbroken over John’s death and he died 18 years before I was born, power of music I guess
Me too. I was 8 when I watched The Beatles on Ed Sullivan with my family. I was gobsmacked! Still am. This video captures the tapestry of the Beatles catalog so perfectly. I'm fortunate to have witnessed Beatlemania and their creative evolution in real-time. Their songs are timeless.
sally novak I wish I was around for all of it. They really are timeless but listening now isn’t the same as listening in real time back then when they were so golden.
I remember the night when this was 1st played on UK television. It was before Coronation Street. It was SO strange to hear Lennon's voice on a song I'd never heard before. There were tears!
I recall watching it too, there was a celeb talking head thing leading up to it. I had taped it on VHS back then. I wonder if that is on TH-cam anywhere?
Yes, I remember watching it at home with my mom and dad. For me it was very emotional - a Beatles single released within my lifetime (I was born 2 years after they split). Must admit, hearing John’s voice brought a massive lump to my throat, and I thought it was a great video.
I chosed this one to my fathers funeral. He was an outsider, we had not spoke for 10 years. He supported himself, all by himself for 40 years by dealing with scrap metal, machines, and all kind of metal stuff. He dident like people, or to be a part of any system.. he wanted to be left alone with his stuff.. but he became compulsive paranoid when the tax office were chasing him.. yeh Now, he is resting, or at last being free.. to do as he wish.. I slowly becoming this man, and I miss him more than ever, for his guidance, cause I know iam not normal either. And i really dont want be like him. Longing for freedom.. just like him. I remember he said once. "All i want is an old simple fishing boat, made of wood. I will stay there over night and sleep under the night sky"
The music video for "Free as a Bird" was produced by Vincent Joliet and directed by Joe Pytka and depicts, from the point of view of a bird in flight, many references to Beatles songs, such as "Penny Lane", "Paperback Writer", "A Day in the Life", "Eleanor Rigby", "Helter Skelter", "Piggies", "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Doctor Robert", and "The Fool on The Hill". Between 80 and 100 allusions to the Beatles' story, music and lyrics in the video have been estimated.
Right on James. Its video genious. Martha My Dear as well, Paul's dog. Julia. Many more. A Day in the Life. Penny Lane. Never stops. The more you watch, the moire you see. Within, without You.
What other song does George play slide? Never seen him God Rest His Soul. Clapton played lead on While Georges guitar gently weeps and Eric's actually cries.
What a stupid comment. Clapton almost never played slide and saying no one can play like George? You obviously haven't heard Derek Trucks, Ry Cooder, and course Duane Allman. George had a unique slide sound that was his own-that you can say. But technically as a player? Derek Trucks is the most musical player you may ever hear.
@@humandroid53 well BM my birds sang along to this, but yeah the original beatles before sergeant Pepper, solos, and the TW's Runaway is a great composition.
@@humandroid53 well I mean they couldn’t really all work together again for obvious reasons and this was as close as we could get. Of course it’s not going to be like the Beatles best but it’s amazing they got together and gave us these new songs at least. It was a tribute to George Formby, as the Ukulele is strummed you can also here the voice of John Lennon saying 'Its turned out nice again', a George Formby catch phrase.
2:21 pause it and you see on the reflection of the glass the trees resembling an eerie resemblence to Paul. The music video is beyond genius. This is to mock the belief that Paul passed away in 1966 from a car crash.
George’s slide playing was always incredible - I always maintained that out of all of The Beatles he matured into the most accomplished musician (sorry Paul, much as I admire you!)
The Beatles are like Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven. They have touched our lives with their timeless music. Rest in peace George and John. Thank you for the music. Paul asked Yoko for any music John recorded as demos but never officially released and she sent him over some tapes. Real Love and Free As A Bird were two of those demos John recorded but never released and so Paul, George and Ringo with Jeff Lynn's help, polished them off and released them as part of the Anthology album.
This is actually one of the few songs that is credited to all four of the Beatles. John for the original recording, Paul, George, and Ringo for filling in the unfinished parts.
A lot of songs were written by other Beatles that werent credit. And I Love Is créditos to Lenon/McCartney but George created the main riff which is the song signature

This was such a treasure in the 90s when it was released. It was like my generation had a little taste of what it was like to hear a new Beatles single. Now we are able to feel childhood nostalgia from a Beatles track too, and having this ability is priceless ❤
Well folks, this is what we all really wanted in the end. To see The Beatles play together again. Even if John wasn’t there in person, you see they still finished John’s songs and you know he would have been pleased with the outcome. This song is just where they truly left off. So grateful for these songs.
I am positive John would be disgusted by the sheer commercialism of his doodling demos. He was a very harsh critic of himself & the band. To me, neither of the "new" songs are anything much. They certainly don't sound like the Beatles.
@@jerryeberts Don't sound like the Beatles? When singing together, it is unmistakably The Beatles. Keep in mind that Paul and George were 20+ years older when this was recorded.
John wrote a great song, but you can really see here how much Paul and George and Ringo added to it REALLY create the Beatles sound that the world could not resist. It's that sound that we all missed in their solo careers. Beatles Forever!

This song was played in my father's funeral. He used to love The Beatles. John Lennon was his favorite beatle, and he always wanted to talk with him. I wonder if they're talking right now up there. Who knows. Rest in peace, daddy. Free as a bird.
I was so teary then I read your comment. Now I'm a complete waterfall. I'm sorry for you loss but still, congratulations for choosing this song to say goodbye to your dad. :)
Which version of John? The minimalist who wrote & sang the songs for his first LP, Plastic Ono Band? Or the drunk who barely managed to produce an album for his pal Harry Nilsson? Or the overly romantic stay-at-home daddy to Sean? Lennon mostly did not care for studio gimmicks, which is what hack Lynne did with this paltry little demo tape. Hardly a masterpiece; I would not put it in the top 50 Beatles songs.
Critics, George Martin, etc hated this song right off the nut. HOWEVER. When George, Paul, & Ringo claimed it and nurtured it with each their own Beatles gifts, fans adored it. It makes me cry every time...what a deep love John had for those guys, and them for him, despite rough waters under the bridge. Such a tender tune, beautiful lyrics, amazing drum & guitar work, and an awesome video to go along
Song makes me cry, thinking about the friendship that the Beatles had, and my own friendships of youth. the guys "always made me feel so free" and joyful.
George Martin liked it and Julian Lennon liked it, the production was too heavy, it needed string; great song...Hope Now and Then comes out asap...That will be best Beatles day ever!!!!
Rumour has it that, upon hearing John's voice during the recording sessions, the surviving Beatles had to pretend that he had simply left the room. Emotional as it must've been for them, they did John's demo justice, immortalised his memory, and cemented his legacy as one quarter of a whole that made the world go round.
They mention that in the Anthology episodes. It was Paul's idea for them to pretend that John was just away on holiday and rang the rest of the band members up to say "Finish the tape, I left you the cassette, I trust you!". Ringo particularly liked the idea. They didn't want to treat John like some kind of martyr figure or heroic rock god because John never would have gone for that.
That account is true as told by Paul Mc himself in 1995 And actually it applied just as the last sessions of that band 3 Jan 1970 when the three Beatles recorded the alternative takes for Let it be and I me mine John excused himself for being unable to attend as he was in Holland
yes and yes. BUT - the only thing that gets me about this - the snare drum sound ... thats an ELO sound. Beatles didnt use that big room boom sound. Everything else... i love it.
@@scoremix8556 Ringo was the drummer on both tracks. Paul, George and Ringo were so impressed by the Genius of Jeff Lynne that they decided to ask him to produce them individually. But I get it with the snare….
@@lucasg.5534 yes. I do. Because bands forget their roots all the time; i've produced enough of them that dont even know how "their sound" happened. That snare is a Lynn staple. And it just sounds weird considering there are roughly 150 other recordings of their other material that DONt hav that tonality. Its just weird. the bass, the guitars, the cadence in the voices, the harmonies, ... all sounds proper Abbey Road sonic beatles. But the snare sounds like an ELO record.
It's probably the only Beatles song where George gets to sing his own part, not just harmonies...and he did it perfectly... not to mention his hauntingly beautiful slide guitar ❤️
Curious all this praise of George, something in death which he never had in life. The Beatles (including producer George Martin) who knew a little something about what good music was, never much liked his music or his constant COMPLAINING. Now, suddenly, in death…he’s a “genius”? And if he’s a genius then EVERYONE is a genius. And if everyone’s a genius…then NO ONE is a genius.

To this day, I am almost 70. I still love The Beatles. I watched them on Ed Sullivan in 1964 with my family, I remember my Dad saying these guys are just a passing phase. I looked at him like he was from Mars. WOW. Was he wrong.
Harrison's guitar at the very beginning..... wow... it encapsulates so much in those few notes. The way they are played, the notes he's chosen, the spirit it conveys. Just incredible.... true Beatles unity.
Jeff Lynne did an excellent job producing this song. Some have complained it sounds too much like ELO, but these same detractors also complained that ELO sounded too much like The Beatles. The way I see it, Jeff Lynne carried on the spiritual torch of The Beatles after the break up, so it was only natural he'd be the one to take this project on... and he did so masterfully.
@@smashrunner8954 - Jeff Lynne had produced George Harrison's 1987 album "Cloud Nine" - which completely revived Harrison's music career. McCartney wanted George Martin to do it... but Harrison would only agree to do it - if Jeff Lynne would be the producer. Paul really wanted the project to go forward - so he eventually agreed to go with Jeff Lynne as the producer. It's amazing to me how this song-produced a quarter century after the Beatles disbanded-is still definitely, definitively, and unmistakably, THE BEATLES. Their sound, their harmony, and the life spirit that infused and branded their music in the 1960s are all present and shine through in Free as a Bird. The video is brilliant too.
This song was recorded by John as an unreleased demo in 1977. In 1994 Yoko Ono gave it to Paul McCartney for him George and Ringo to work on it, and they released it as part of their 1995 Anthology Album/TV special. This is as close as we'll ever get to a Beatles reunion.
Steve Stott now and then. It was another song like F.A.A.B and real love (a demo) but george didnt like it so they didnt do it. Theres an amazing fanmade version on youtube
When i hear this song i can't help but wonder if the surviving members of the band sit there and really miss those days when they were together. The "Whatever happened to the life that we once knew, can we really live without eachother" part really proves that. The"When did we lose the touch, that used to mean so much" part is reminding me of the time the band broke up. It's really heartbreaking but i guess anything that good doesn't last forever. I really wish John and George were still alive ,and they could have joined Paul and Ringo to cut one last album. I'm sure it would have blown all this modern music out the water.
This song came out during the Anthology series, which regrettably was the end of my Mom’s seven month battle with cancer. “What ever happened to, the life that we once knew?” Then hums because not written yet. Fast forward 20 years Paul fills the blank line with…
”Can we really live without each other?”... Where did we lose the touch that seemed to mean so much?…
Always made me feel so free!”

EDIT: Ok..so it’s April 2022 now.
They were never the same Beatles, always trying new things and finding new places. I think that's the best part of their legacy.
People that say those things are what are commonly known as "Culls". But hopefully they can find their song before that

Two musical geniuses.

whoever made this music video is a true genius

That account is true as told by Paul Mc himself in 1995
And actually it applied just as the last sessions of that band
3 Jan 1970 when the three Beatles recorded the alternative takes for Let it be and I me mine
John excused himself for being unable to attend as he was in Holland
My gosh, why did I cry 😭

John's voice was heaven
Best word to describe his voice!
George’s solo will never NOT make my hair stand up.
Sublime and perfect
Couldn't agree with you more, it truly feels freeing
That's lost touch in new song now and then, lost the melody and harmony
It's amazing. A perfect use of the key change John intended for the bridge.

George is insane with the slide guitar, it's a shame he couldn't shine as much in Now and Then as he does here
Jeff Lynne is a fantastic producer, musician and songwriter. Thank you for making this reunion possible.
yes and yes.
@@MusicLover10538 yeah it’s just not “ the Beatles”. Should have been the highly damped sound they used for their entire career.
@@scoremix8556 you're exaggerating a bit. If it wasn't "the Beatles" do you think they would go along with it?

@@ianinagaki - Pfft! This is a complicated matter…not enough room here. John indeed did this several times, including borrowing from classical music (‘Because’ being one example). He worked it out with the difficult and unlikable Chuck Berry which included a tv appearance, NOT an entire album.
I lOVE ELO!
And "Mr. Blue Sky" must be the one ELO song that has got the most Beatle flavour !
Why George Martin didn't produce this Songs ? He was deaf all ready ?
And ELO sounds like The MOVE
@@smashrunner8954 - Jeff Lynne had produced George Harrison's 1987 album "Cloud Nine" - which completely revived Harrison's music career. Harrison and Lynne put together the Traveling Wiburys while they were recording "Cloud Nine"... and they made two Wilburys albums (one released in 1988 and one in 1990). Harrison and Lynne had become really close friends... so George wanted Jeff to produce the new Beatles project. McCartney wanted George Martin to do it... but Harrison would only agree to do it - if Jeff Lynne would be the producer. Paul really wanted the project to go forward - so he eventually agreed to go with Jeff Lynne as the producer. Paul turned out to be impressed with what Jeff Lynne did as the producer of the project - and would hire Lynne to produce his next album, "Flaming Pie"... which became one of McCartney's best albums of the last half of his career.

This stabs my heart when I hear it because it's every broken relationship we endure 💔 😩

The "Whatever happened to the life that we once knew, can we really live without eachother" part really proves that.
