- The Beatles performing “Free As A Bird.”
The Beatles Anthology project was a huge undertaking and to complement the historical and archival material that was made available both on CD and on video, the band recorded two new tracks. Released in December 1995, ‘Free As A Bird’ was the first of the new songs. Instead of recording a completely new composition together, Paul, George and Ringo created a track based on John’s 1977 demo, recorded at his and Yoko’s home in the Dakota in New York City.
Jeff Lynne, a good friend of George Harrison’s and a fellow member of the Travelling Wilburys, was drafted in to help with production. The ‘Free As A Bird’ video had it’s first public outing on America’s ABC TV on Sunday November 19th 1995, and the track was subsequently aired on BBC Radio 1 the day after - the day before Anthology came out. The single release followed two weeks later and made No.2 on the UK charts, while in the US ‘Free As A Bird’ enjoyed an 11-week run on the best-seller list, peaking at No.5.
Joe Pytka, a talented American filmmaker who had made several music videos with Michael Jackson, directed the beautiful video. The visual concept was a ‘bird’s-eye-view’ of countless Beatles songs.

People that say “I hate The Beatles” or that “they suck” just haven’t discovered the right song for them. There is a Beatles song for everyone....
I want to hold your hand
Mine is help or sgt peppers
For me it was In My Life that drew me in. From there it’s literally 100’s of songs. But my favs are: Here, There, Everywhere, A Day in the Life, Rain, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Across the Universe and Yesterday
EDIT: Ok..so it’s April 2022 now. I’m recently OBSESSED with “I’ll Follow the Sun”. I can’t explain it but it’s one those songs I haven’t listened to for years perhaps. Than driving home from work one day it comes on from a playlist and It struck the mood so perfectly, with the weather and scenery and everything. (I live in Colorado sooooo amazing scenery is everywhere) It’s something about it to. The melody from Paul is short, simple but super catchy. After a few listens you’ll find yourself walking around the house singing “One day, you’ll look…to see I’ve gone. For tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun” it’s beautiful…Not sure if I’ll put it in my top 10, but it is damn climbing with each listen.
They were never the same Beatles, always trying new things and finding new places. I think that's the best part of their legacy.
People that say those things are what are commonly known as "Culls". But hopefully they can find their song before that
While now and then comes out, I come to enjoy this masterpiece :)
After watching the short film, this song deserve a remix the way they did with original Now and Then demo from John
@@faisalnh2450Now and then finde ich nicht so gut und verstehe auch diesen Hype nicht. Nur weil Beatles davor steht?
Same here. The song is poignant, it works, and the video is an amazing labour of talent and love by somebody. Now and Then is, sadly, a bridge too far.
@@steffanschurig926 es ist halt John gewissermaßen für diese Minuten wiedererweckt, was technisch offensichtlich erst jetzt möglich war.

whoever made this music video is a true genius
The music video for "Free as a Bird" was produced by Vincent Joliet and directed by Joe Pytka and depicts, from the point of view of a bird in flight, many references to Beatles songs, such as "Penny Lane", "Paperback Writer", "A Day in the Life", "Eleanor Rigby", "Helter Skelter", "Piggies", "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Doctor Robert", and "The Fool on The Hill". Between 80 and 100 allusions to the Beatles' story, music and lyrics in the video have been estimated.
Right on James. Its video genious. Martha My Dear as well, Paul's dog. Julia. Many more. A Day in the Life. Penny Lane. Never stops. The more you watch, the moire you see. Within, without You.

Robert Coulton no problem. I bet she's rocking out with John and George right now! Have a wonderful day! :)
God be with her
Hang in there, she's watching over you this very minute.
I know a lot of Beatles fans don’t care for Yoko but God bless her for turning over Real Love, Free as a Bird and Now and Then to Paul. I know a lot of people blame her for the breakup of The Beatles but I think true fans should accept that John loved Yoko very much.
Agreed! if we love John we should also love Yoko!
I think the same. I like her. She is my favourite Beatle's wife.
John would never have gotten to see Julian had it not been for May Pang.
I think Yoko over time has won over most fans.Maybe in tribute to John if no other, respect his poor wife after all.
James Paul McCartney died in car crash on September 11 1966 and was replaced by William (Billy). This is the truth no matter what!
George’s solo will never NOT make my hair stand up.
Sublime and perfect
Couldn't agree with you more, it truly feels freeing
That's lost touch in new song now and then, lost the melody and harmony
It's amazing. A perfect use of the key change John intended for the bridge.
Agree 100 percent.
George is insane with the slide guitar, it's a shame he couldn't shine as much in Now and Then as he does here
“As a musician, you often have dreams about being in the studio or on stage so I’m often with the guys,
Just the other morning I woke up and I was with George. And that was very nice. That’s how I run into John and George these days.
So The Beatles have reformed. In my head.”

This was such a treasure in the 90s when it was released. It was like my generation had a little taste of what it was like to hear a new Beatles single. Now we are able to feel childhood nostalgia from a Beatles track too, and having this ability is priceless ❤
And there's a new one coming this year
Totally agree!! I had just moved to socal and this was released. I remember playing it over and over. Brought tears to my eyes.
First single I bought, which was weird because the first single my dad bought was Paperback Writer :)
My generation is getting a new beatles release too very soon. I'm so excited for it!
Won't be a new song as they've already said they will never make a new song if there was someone missing
Considering there are now some amazing AI clean ups of John Lennon's demo tape of this song maybe it's time to polish up this song for a re release.
I think the slightly scratchy recording of John's voice in this is actually perfect.
Actually what you're hearing here is not the original 1995 mix but a remix done in 2015 (I'm surprised there's no mention of this in the video description) when the "Beatles 1+" video collection was released. The isolation of John's voice is slightly better than on the original mix, and among other things, they used a different take of George's lead vocal. But still, re-doing it with 2023 technology for an official release would certainly have been a good idea (there are some excellent "fan versions" available here and there).
@@YannD 2015 was sadly a long time ago now, The ability to make better is massive different now. If the song was fixed up to today's AI standards Johns voice would be completely crystal clear.
Came here to say this… a remaster using the new tech they’re using on ‘Now and Then’ needs to happen
I think it provides a haunting quality to the song. One of those unintended special effects that The Beatles stumbled upon many times (as in Tomorrow Never Knows). It's perfect as is.
I honestly can’t listen to this without tearing up. The way they sing together with John, the memories of a lost time, brought together again in this song.
Me too boah, this is nostalgic even for me that haven't lived that era
Darth JooJ Same, I’m so nostalgic for a time I never lived in, it‘s so strange. I am genuinely heartbroken over John’s death and he died 18 years before I was born, power of music I guess
Same, Same.
Me too. I was 8 when I watched The Beatles on Ed Sullivan with my family. I was gobsmacked! Still am. This video captures the tapestry of the Beatles catalog so perfectly. I'm fortunate to have witnessed Beatlemania and their creative evolution in real-time. Their songs are timeless.
sally novak I wish I was around for all of it. They really are timeless but listening now isn’t the same as listening in real time back then when they were so golden.
The Original Lennon demo. His lyric on the middle section ....
“What ever happened to, the life that we once knew?” Then hums because not written yet. Fast forward 20 years Paul fills the blank line with…
”Can we really live without each other?”... Where did we lose the touch that seemed to mean so much?…
Always made me feel so free!”

They were close. Being in a long term band is like a marriage. You get to know each other on a really personal level. Break ups can be devastating too. Life is complicated.

I chosed this one to my fathers funeral.
He was an outsider, we had not spoke for 10 years.
He supported himself, all by himself for 40 years by dealing with scrap metal, machines, and all kind of metal stuff.
He dident like people, or to be a part of any system.. he wanted to be left alone with his stuff.. but he became compulsive paranoid when the tax office were chasing him.. yeh
Now, he is resting, or at last being free.. to do as he wish.. I slowly becoming this man, and I miss him more than ever, for his guidance, cause I know iam not normal either.
And i really dont want be like him.
Longing for freedom.. just like him.
I remember he said once.
"All i want is an old simple fishing boat, made of wood.
I will stay there over night and sleep under the night sky"
The last line, it is so beautiful. And I hope the best for you and your Dad too man ❤
Now and Then brought me here. This song is superb. Such a good feeling.
True!!!!
After 25 years, we finally heard those Beatles harmonies again. A sound that was missing in all of their solo careers. Every Beatle contributed to this song. They worked together again, for the first time in so many years. Magical. This song sounds so incredibly, unmistakingly Beatles. They still had it, and still have it. RIP John and George. Two musical geniuses.

Even after johns death he still contributed with his voice recording..the Beatles are the Mozart of our times ✌✌❤❤
Really hope Now and Then comes out in 2022
I think they played together on Ringo album
George's solo in the beginning is heaven , so gentle and soooo musically played.
I think it's annoying actually. Slide guitar was solo George, not Beatles. George lost the ability to play lead guitar so he switched to slide
@@Saturn-sd8htnahhh, go ahead and listen to "Something."
It's got the iconic slide guitar that Harrison basically invented.
This is pure Beatles.
@@Saturn-sd8htGeorge didn’t really find his own signature sound on the guitar until Abbey Road. His slide guitar from there dominates the rest of his career so I always think if the Beatles had stuck it out we would’ve gotten more slide

I agree. I am not a big George Harrison fan, but he really turned up for these recordings...
You can hear John's voice much more clearly here than in the original. Its not as distorted. Kudos to whoever went back and cleaned the sound up a bit as music tech has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 25+ years. Can't wait for the historic final new Beatles song in November, 2023!

George steals the whole song with his stunning slide guitar solo, his best ever! The greatest, the gods, the Champions! Poor John. R.I.P. George.
what about george's great ukelele work at the end when George died that was it for me such a beautiful person

Yeah..I just went back to this song this time to listen to George´s guitar playing..gosh it is fine....and then I realize that the ukulele in the end is gorgeous too! I guess it is George there too.

it's the best band ever- it's The Beatles!
The video contains a lot of personal Beatles information, some episodes contain hidden hints on real facts. I watched the video many-many times and some moments are still like a jigsaw puzzle for me…. So interesting
@@mikhailsosin8426 They were always mysterious, never obvious.
Yes the solo is amazing, but it’s sounds very similar to Jeff Lynne guitar, moreover, Jeff was a music editor of this version
No one, even Clapton, can play slide guitar like George. His unique style is unequalled. RIP GEORGE
What other song does George play slide? Never seen him God Rest His Soul. Clapton played lead on While Georges guitar gently weeps and Eric's actually cries.
What a stupid comment. Clapton almost never played slide and saying no one can play like George? You obviously haven't heard Derek Trucks, Ry Cooder, and course Duane Allman. George had a unique slide sound that was his own-that you can say. But technically as a player? Derek Trucks is the most musical player you may ever hear.
Derek needs to slow way way down,,,Space is the place and George Harrison knew that

The Beatles are like Bach, Handel, Mozart and Beethoven. They have touched our lives with their timeless music. Rest in peace George and John. Thank you for the music.
Paul asked Yoko for any music John recorded as demos but never officially released and she sent him over some tapes.
Real Love and Free As A Bird were two of those demos John recorded but never released and so Paul, George and Ringo with Jeff Lynn's help, polished them off and released them as part of the Anthology album.
And Thank you Jeff Lynne to make this Reunion possible. Producer extraordinaire!

James Donegan while society in both england and america have become horrifying due to government control and 3rd world to 1st world immigration, making times when countries were nations attractive by comparison, the reason You are probably nostalgic for a time period you never lived through is because you’re just one of a mondless consumerate, another aspect of modern society which is so disapointing.

I have such a strong emotional resonance with this song that I don’t even fully understand. Every time, for the briefest of moments, it transports me back to being a little little kid. Like so young that you don’t even have memory of it.
Yet at the same time, it gives me a sense of melancholy. It takes me to a time I don’t remember, and makes me sad that I’ll never be able to experience it. It’s not even the lyrics that do this to me, it’s just the vibe of the song.
It has a similar effect that 'Feed the Birds' from Mary Poppins has on me.
I have the same feeling with the Beatles, I was born in 73 but I feel like I've always known every single one of their songs, I even think I was there when they did the all you need is love live broadcast, weird

Yep, one of the most heartbreaking moments in music for me. George. Wow.
I must have listened to this song 50 times today and it just doesn't get old! I agree with you, Adam.
George's slide guitar in the beginning gave me such goosebumps. Its sound was so incredibly Beatles. Then the vocal harmonies came in and I was brought back to the '60s. Which is funny, because I was born in the early 2000's. This song made me nostalgic for something I was never even a part of.
Omg it’s nice knowing I’m not the only one who feels like that lol

In the late 80s and early 90s, I had the feeling that The Beatles were somehow old-fashioned or outdated. All of a sudden, it all changed. I was 18 in 1995 when they released Free as a Bird and Real Love a couple of months later. I remember all of my friends became Beatles fans. We used to spend hours talking with our parents and their friends about 60s and 70s music. Needless to say it was a great time.
Jeff Lynne is an underappreciated genius. When the elderly Sir George Martin declined getting involved in resurrecting this song, thank goodness they turned to Jeff. Perfect.
George's slide was so sweet. He and John was such talent. Miss them.
His guitar is gently weeping here
Jeff Lynne did an excellent job producing this song. Some have complained it sounds too much like ELO, but these same detractors also complained that ELO sounded too much like The Beatles. The way I see it, Jeff Lynne carried on the spiritual torch of The Beatles after the break up, so it was only natural he'd be the one to take this project on... and he did so masterfully.
I lOVE ELO!
And "Mr. Blue Sky" must be the one ELO song that has got the most Beatle flavour !
Why George Martin didn't produce this Songs ? He was deaf all ready ?
And ELO sounds like The MOVE
@@smashrunner8954 - Jeff Lynne had produced George Harrison's 1987 album "Cloud Nine" - which completely revived Harrison's music career. Harrison and Lynne put together the Traveling Wiburys while they were recording "Cloud Nine"... and they made two Wilburys albums (one released in 1988 and one in 1990). Harrison and Lynne had become really close friends... so George wanted Jeff to produce the new Beatles project. McCartney wanted George Martin to do it... but Harrison would only agree to do it - if Jeff Lynne would be the producer. Paul really wanted the project to go forward - so he eventually agreed to go with Jeff Lynne as the producer. Paul turned out to be impressed with what Jeff Lynne did as the producer of the project - and would hire Lynne to produce his next album, "Flaming Pie"... which became one of McCartney's best albums of the last half of his career.
This song is so current
Well folks, this is what we all really wanted in the end. To see The Beatles play together again. Even if John wasn’t there in person, you see they still finished John’s songs and you know he would have been pleased with the outcome. This song is just where they truly left off. So grateful for these songs.
Totally!
This shows how much their music reverberates around everybody's lives thank god for the Beatles xx
Yes I agree, and John Lennon was awesome singer and song writer the Beatles a awesome group
I am positive John would be disgusted by the sheer commercialism of his doodling demos. He was a very harsh critic of himself & the band. To me, neither of the "new" songs are anything much. They certainly don't sound like the Beatles.
@@jerryeberts Don't sound like the Beatles? When singing together, it is unmistakably The Beatles. Keep in mind that Paul and George were 20+ years older when this was recorded.
“Whatever happened to the life that we once knew? Can we really live without each other?” 💔 I can’t. Love them.

For me... one of the most wonderful videos ever made. 🐦
The world really lost something magnificent when these boys broke up. I'm glad the surviving three managed to put this together, as if realizing too late the void created by their disunity. How did these last two songs fail to reach #1?
Rumour has it that, upon hearing John's voice during the recording sessions, the surviving Beatles had to pretend that he had simply left the room. Emotional as it must've been for them, they did John's demo justice, immortalised his memory, and cemented his legacy as one quarter of a whole that made the world go round.
It's true, George said they had to just imagine he simply went to get some tea. It was the only way they got through it at first.
They mention that in the Anthology episodes. It was Paul's idea for them to pretend that John was just away on holiday and rang the rest of the band members up to say "Finish the tape, I left you the cassette, I trust you!". Ringo particularly liked the idea. They didn't want to treat John like some kind of martyr figure or heroic rock god because John never would have gone for that.
That account is true as told by Paul Mc himself in 1995
And actually it applied just as the last sessions of that band
3 Jan 1970 when the three Beatles recorded the alternative takes for Let it be and I me mine
John excused himself for being unable to attend as he was in Holland
My gosh, why did I cry 😭

This song and Real Love came out when I was in middle school.... our school did an entire Beatles series during my 7th grade year, the same time the anthology dropped. Looking back, I now get how the teachers were all mostly 40's then, and had grown up on the Beatles... must have been amazing for them to share that with us. I fell in love with the Beatles that year, and have carried their tunes with me through my life. When my wife and I got our first dog together, we named her Lucy (in the sky). Then we got Sgt. Pepper. Then Penny Lane. 15 years later they are all gone, except Pepper. But our love remains... This song will always be in my heart. And the harmony on Real Love has always reminded me of my mom singing to me as a kid for some reasons. The Beatles will live on forever.
Sounds like we are about the same age. Growing up in the 90's all the friends were hooked on the "new stuff" and I just couldn't be dragged away from the Beatles. Has been and always will be my favorite band. How lucky are we to get a new Beatles song in '23?!?
