First thing to do is disconnect the front sway bars. That changes everything.

My first knee jerk reaction was "why compare these. Duh." But it was really nice to see them back to back on the exact same terrain. The result was no surprise but how far apart they are is harder to guess. Was a worthwhile watch.

I think it was a little bit biased because they do make fully enclosed Generals. Other than that it was a great comparison. I am only 14, but I have drove both Rangers and Generals. The Generals get a bit more uncontrollable on trails but who really drives Rangers on hard core trails. You should do a winter version of both, just stay away from being biased because of the cab. Do plow tests too. My grandpa said he can just click a button to automatically raise his plow. Test that too!

The ad I got in the middle of this is how Polaris has had to pay millions in fines because of design and safety negligence. It was focusing on one that caught on fire calling them a “death trap” and how you should call these attorneys to file a lawsuit against them.

I just added a Zbroz Exit 2.2 shocks to my Ultimate. What a difference these shocks make. The ride is like night and day. I'd bet with these shocks on you'd pick the Ranger over the General for that ride.
Can i put zbroz exit 2.2 to a 2021 ranger northstar ultimate crew and make a big difference in ride comfort?
That ranger is for someone who enjoys looking outside but not going outside 😂

If you're doing any wheeling like this in a ranger you need to undo your sway bars. That will give you the articulation you're looking for
on your decent you need to give it throttle to engage the clutch/belt, it will slow you to a crawl, if you coast down at idle, your basically in neutral
you need to mention its a General XP.... the factory custom just adds beadlocks and a bumper along with a special color scheme
You have to give Polaris machines a little gas going downhill for the clutches to stay engaged to provide engine braking, if not they will release and free wheel.

What a garbage system. My Yamaha engine breaks without having to do tricks to make it work. Same with with my new Pioneer 1000. I just bump the downshift paddle and it holds that lower gear as long as I want.
@@Malc664 I had a 600 Sportsman that had EBS. It was so good it would almost stop you machine on a steep hill. I towed a trailer to our cabin and I had to be careful on hills so the trailer wouldn’t jackknife me. We have a Ranger now, load it up at home, drive it off the trailer at the trail head and down the trail we go. I do miss the EBS but using the throttle works ok. There is only one hill with rocks, the rest is hard packed dirt and when it rains there are long deep puddles where water comes in the floor even jacked up 5”. The trail is like slick wet ice when it is wet.
Could you put the ac in a general?
And what’s the max speed for low gear in the general?

Whats the difference between the CVT's they put in cross-overs vs the one in each of these side by sides?
In the "toys" they are rubber kevlar compound in road cars they are smooth link Chain (like a bike chain but bigger) toys use cenfical or centifugal (one of them) to "shift" cars use hydraulic pressure or computers to do the same. biggest issue is wear and on a road car much more difficult to service. While they have many advantages they are limited in the range they produce witch is why cvt atv/sxs have a high low most cars are on the road so they just have high, meaning poor towing and medocre slow performance. On top of they can rob up to 25% (most of the time 15%) were as a gear on gear is aboit 15-10% witch can affect fuel economy
I know I didn't answer your question well but they are verry similar so thought I would pipe in why they are more common on toys them cars

Right at the beginning of the video an add popped up about Polaris being in a lawsuit due to poor quality design and catching fire and hurting ppl. Is this true?
The difference for me is I have a kid and need space to take 3 people just not me and the wife so I have to go with the ranger I wish the general had a bench.
I think making most of the comparisons about the cab is kinda silly cause you can get them both with or without a cab. General seems kinda like the best of both worlds without a lot of compromise. For real work tho I just can’t see why they’re sticking with a cvt with a belt instead of Hondas automotive type transmission…

After owning a tesla for two years i will never buy another electric cehicle let along a work vehicle that i need to depend on.
You have to give it gas, while going downhill, to engage the belt and get engine braking.
So do you wear a helmet in a truck that has a full cab when off-road
You gada stay on the throttle a little bit for the ranger to hold back on steep hills.

I looked at a general recently, with options, it was $30,000 and in California they cannot be used on county roads.
Lately, I’ve been seeing old Jeep TJ’s for sale much cheaper offering way more drivability. Thinking they would be a better deal.
@John Dillermand - Only with included A.C. Heater, hard top, cruise limited slip so on. Maybe even nice suspension.
First time side by side owner here. I have owned my General now for a month. It’s actually pretty disappointing. I expected it to be a little better on trails. It feels like it’s going to tip over easy. Also screaming RPM’s while only going 30mph is off putting. It does the job but it just feels like a golf cart on steroids.
Put some 1.5”-2” wheel spacers on it. World of difference. Trust me. I had people telling me to do it for a year and I ignored it, and finally bought some and holy crap. Night and day for stability
Great work A-man! You did a thorough review. Yes indeed shocks that can smooth out the rocky trails rule, but no way are either one of those SxS worth that kind of cash.
Couldn’t disagree more. I would take one of these over a truck 9/10 times. If you love off-road then your priorities are different.
I have the ranger and does everything I would want it to do but it is a little bumpier and tippier but if you know how to pick your line it will go up anything!
I'm curious what the cut in temp is on the fans. Odd question I know, my old Ranger was 197 degrees. Just wondering if they kick on a little sooner now?
I have an 18 and would often see a spike of 205 before the fan would come on. The fix, I had gilloman tune it.
@@crazydave4455 I had a '12 and it would do the very same. I didn't like it to get that hot before it kicked in.
@@briantate6690 after being tuned the fan now starts around 178 degrees and ramps as needed. Much better!

Disconnecting the sway bars helps a lot. Once you add a tune and upgraded shocks the ranger is just as trail capable
Neat machines. I would take the Ranger if I could justify and afford it.
We have a 2017 900XP with power steering. We mainly ride it slow about six miles to our cabin.it only has about 500 miles on it Many times we go out for over two weeks so we have to haul food and other supplies. We need the bigger bed. Ours is lifted 5” with tires and a lift kit as the ruts are deep.
What I would like to see is some budget SXS that are the same as you are testing, like Robbie Gordans offering CF Moto who I believe have a factory in the US as you did with the Chinese trail bike and find an electric one to see if they have improved or even made it in the market as you did have one on your channel, because we can't all afford these high dollar machines.

Not comparable to either Polaris machine I realise, but look no further than a Yamaha Viking for a real lesson in no brakes descent control.
I have both. A '15 Ranger and a 17 General. The Ranger has better (easier) power steering and a larger bed. It also has power windows that the General doesn't offer. My General has better seats and a better ride because I put $4000 worth of Shock Therapy Fox shocks on it. I wish Polaris would take the best of both and make one good machine

Take the rear sway bar off the ranger gets more travel
I wish you chose the waterfowl edition haha. Way more clearance than the one shown. Monster tires but its not meant for rocky terrain and more so for water/mud which is why i chose it to have some fun in my mud parks XD. But i will say that i think im now at a cross between choosing a general and a rzr for our next side by side.
Wow these things look scary trying to engine brake down the hill. What a difference true engine braking makes. I don't like having to change belts on the trail, i don't like my machine catching on fire and I do like true engine breaking so I'll just stick to my Yamaha and Honda.

Hey man, when going downhill, press the gas pedal a little and the engine will brake... Don't use tge brake. Honestly i expect people who do reviews to know better than the audience
These machines should be in the 10-25k range not 25-30k that's literally a jeep that's already fully enclosed with a heater and ac.

Well some people actually use the Ranger for work not play and are worth the 28k especially with a conditioned cab

That general really is a decent machine… theres better options from cfmoto and hisun for value… but the general sits in a place of its own… i feel like its plush for fun but designed for work, and seems to do both better than the others… no sport will work like it, and no utility will have fun like it….
Agian… not worth the money… look around at the tboss and the uforce… the sector is cheaper yet… but still a great value compared to either of these polaris….
Quick note first is I'm a rank amateur when it comes to side by sides but can somebody tell me why most of these guys wear helmets inside a roll cage?
ha! must be some legal thing. I wonder how many of them actually wear one when not filming, whether that's on the trail or around their place and that includes Polaris' employees.
I have never ever seen any grown adult wear a helmet in a Ranger with a full enclosed cab whether that was on USFS trails, BLM, private ranches/farms, or just around acreage property.

These things are so overpriced and the new models have so many problems, recalls, and even lawsuits against them for catching on fire 🔥. Polaris just trades on its’ name anymore. They’re not quality like they once were.

The General is better in pretty much every way. If you want a full cab, get a truck. The Ranger is for lame old men.
Buy a Yamaha or Kawasaki so you won’t be in the shop all the time with Polaris they are not dependable sold them for 25 years

Yes that’s me Polaris gave BLM $250k go figure sorry ass company . Yamaha was the best brand we sold period Honda next best and Polaris worse . I was a Harley dealer 65 years Honda for 52 years and Polaris for 25 years . They sell but are not a good unit after they get some mules on them . I have a Can Am Limited now it is a little better than Polaris not a lot . Yamaha Kawasaki and Honda and Suzuki forget the rest

13,000 trouble free miles on my ranger 900 doing heavy duty farm work beg to differ.
@@neilweber6338 buddy of mine had a 2017 sportsman 570, blew a chunk of engine out the side. He upgrades to a 850 HL and within a month bent the front drive shaft. But that also happens to a Honda after 30yrs so it's good enough.
That's your opinion, I have over 5300 miles on my 2019 Polaris General no issues.
Skip the Polaris and get a Yamaha Rmax 1000 IYKYK
