    I have learned (the hard way) over the years and now I stick with two main brands when it comes to outdoors equipment: Honda and Stihl. Rarely do I have equipment issues beyond routine maintenance.

      Derek Bedford ya really can’t go wrong with a Yamaha they are super reliable right up there with Honda the new wolverines got the 850 engine in them of ya wanted the extra power but if that’s no issue the Viking is great I was in a six seater touring the mountians in Newfoundland it was a great unit. I had 2 Polaris sportsman’s and they were real troublesome. Have a can am xmr at the moment seems to be ok so far. I ride a lot of mud so I went with a mud bike. I’m not Familiar with yanmar but if they are anything like the yamaha you should be ok.Good luck with your choice!

I’ve always owned Honda’s (except for a lapse in judgement with another brand of side x side before I got the pioneer)and always had good luck and have always been treated good at the dealer. Goes to show how Honda is loyal to their customers. I’m not into bashing other brands but with my “mistake” side x side, it was the biggest piece of junk I ever owned and it was always a fight for warranty and it always ended with them paying for the parts and me paying for labour. Currently have a 13’ Honda Recon ES, and I work the crap out of it almost every day hauling firewood out of the woods. Estimated to have somewhere around 35,000 miles on it. Never had a problem! Gone through 3 sets of tires, if that’s any indication of how hard it’s ridden. Recently was given a used Yamaha Rhino 700 with 5,000 miles on it, and it hasn’t been very reliable. Taken the engine case apart twice to replace the stator coil (got a bad one the first time), which includes removing the water pump. Overheats when I load it down with wood, and run down the road (the same thing I’ve done forever with the Recon). Blows out rear cv joints so often I just gave up, so they click like crazy. Just waiting for one to come apart completely to replace them. Really need to upgrade to a Honda Pioneer!

    You said all the machine's in the shop were polaris's.... Did you ask if the dealer sold 10 polaris's for every honda? Because in my area that's the deal... maybe even more than that. I'd say your issues with your polaris were just bad luck. WE've had 9 Rangers since 2009 (large operation) and have put on approx a combined 140K miles of hard ranch work in all kinds of weather conditions. We have never had an AWD related issue like you have experienced. Just driveline U joints. So again, I'd say you most likely got a lemon, and your experiences are the exception, not the rule.

      @@Dreamscythe1 Many will have far more 'bad luck' with Polaris than Honda, and there is no having to grease a Honda anywhere. Why are there lots of grease zerks on Polaris? Because bushings that need grease are a lot cheaper to mfg. (Polaris uses cheap quality parts) Honda uses high quality bushings that don't need grease ever, and that high quality of Honda parts greatly reduces 'bad luck' It's foolish to count on 'luck' with poor quality Polaris machines, but will always get 'good luck' with much higher quality Honda machines.

And to this day, I have never had any of the issues mentioned here. I’ve had it all over Baja in some of the worst conditions imaginable and after 12 years, 14,000 miles, 10,000 hours I put a new top end in the motor. I do service, & maintenance regularly, and replace the belt yearly just to be on the safe side. I recently picked up another one pretty much the same as the other for 3K and freshened it up for about another thousand so now I have two. Retired now and not as aggressive as I used to be, these two more than serve my needs here on the beaches and low deserts around San Felipe, Baja, plus I have an “extra” for when company comes.

    Think of how easy it must be to make a reliable UTV when you make 70% less power than everyone else!! I respect Honda's reliability but the Pioneer 1000 is a sled, it weighs a crap ton and it has less power. To me, the Honda fits a Niche that doesnt exist. People who want to use a UTV for work and play are going to want more power and acceleration. People who want to use a UTV for hardcore work are going to buy a Kubota. The Pioneer is for people who want to do slightly more work than play, but there idea of play is 25 mph with no gear through a field. The Honda does what Honda does best, it re-invents boring, but its guaranteed to be reliably boring for a long time. There is no room for boring in a "Recreational" market.

    Thanks. Great video. We are steering away from a Polaris as well due to some issues we had with ours in the mountains of NC. I did want to share one thing with you. We had a couple of miles of private road with several families depending on it being open (medical reasons, etc). I did the plowing and was always banging up the blade on protruding rocks and the occasional stump. It took me two years to figure out that if I unbolted the replaceable bottom part of the blade and inserted about 3" of thick stall mat between the replaceable bottom and the plow itself, I could drop the plow down and ride with the stall mat doing the snow removal, not the metal blade. Looks like you have a very nice concrete driveway and that might not help you much, but if you do any gravel road plowing... But again, thanks. We'll go look at Honda now. It's too hot here to sit on that Polaris heat machine all summer.

      @claytonwhitman2611 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedToolHouse You are correct, the power steering is not a requirement. I bought the absolute base model. I will be adding a power steering kit to it. Power steering helps if you do a lot of rough terrain driving, with the bumps. It also helps a LOT with the mud driving when you are in 4WD, especially with the dif lock engaged. When I am in the deep mud and dif lock, the steering wants to go straight. Once you muscle it to turn, it gets to about half way to a maximum turn, and then it wants to go to full maximum turn. So, for a lot of rough or mud driving, GET THE POWER STEERING.

    Bought my SXS in 2014. I wanted a 4 seat for my grandkids. There weren't many options in 2014. Honda had just come out with the Pioneer. My buddy had one as a work vehicle for well sites. He hated it for one reason and that was power, no diff lock or low range. I never considered Polaris because of all the horror stories and as long as a car. Yamaha had no offerings. I did a ton of research on the TeryX 4. Positive reviews were the norm, plus they were the first to offer a 3 year warranty. I bought the T4 and have never once regretted it. My riding buddies call it the "tank" and it will go anywhere this 62 year old points it. They are loud and hot but it doesn't bother me. The fit and finish are second to none, plus the Fox Podium shocks, power steering and Maxxis Big Horns came standard on my machine. Five year later and not a single issue. Needless to say, I love my TeryX. For the record, my 2006 Honda Ridgeline has 180k miles on it and runs like a new one.

  • @WilliamStewart1
    @WilliamStewart1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One thing many people seem to overlook is performance. Yes the Honda's last a long time and are great machines, but so are the Can Ams and Polaris units for what they are. Sure a Can Am or Polaris 4 wheeler or SxS will not last as long as a Honda, but they are built for more performance. They offer way more power, better suspension, higher capabilities etc etc. That performance comes at the price of reliability. I for one am not overly concerned about performance and would rather have a machine that lasts longer. That being said, I understand why so many people buy the Can Am and Polaris units.
    Take a Honda 4 wheeler as an example, they are farm machines first and foremost. They are pretty slow, ride rough, don't offer much in the way of features etc etc. But at the end of the day you'll typically just have to do basic maintenance and it will work for decades. Now go ride around on a Can Am Outlander 800 or 1000, those things are stupid fast and will lift the tires at 30 MPH. So while the Honda is just doing simple basic work, that Can AM is making triple the power and most likely being abused a lot more. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just my take on it.

So this morning I got up to 6-7" of heavy snow and since it is going to get nasty cold this week, I was pushing the snow banks back with my Kubota loader. I got it stuck! I had to walk to the other end of the property to retrieve golfy, after hooking up a chain, a couple of tugs with golfy and the tractor was free. I'm always amazed at how strong the Pioneer 500 is, whether joy riding up and down the ravines or saving the day.

    Novice here. Why not use a tractor for those types of chores?

      My tractor is a slower machine. It would take longer and be more wear on a machine that is critical in other areas. Also, the payload of the UTV is more

      Yes. I don't know that I have tried that specific of a test but I can come down any of our steep hills with a load of fire wood and not have to touch the brake.

    Most every Polaris made is junk. They are using their once good name to sell low quality crap
