You certainly have had a rough several weeks. I am so happy that Bear is doing so much better. I can relate to the stress as my cat had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her abdomen and. like Bear, the vet got all of it out. That was 16 months ago, and she has had a few checkups and so far, all is well. Yes, they are our babies, and we love them so much. Hugs to Bear and all of your babies. You are a great and caring momma.

Thank you so much! I’m so happy to hear that your kitty is doing well. I have cats too, I kind of have a mini zoo 😂. It’s so hard to see them hurting but it does feel good when you’re able to help them feel better.

I was just on Sucralfate Suspension which is a liquid form of Sucralfate, I’m not sure if they make it in a liquid form for ferrets since they told you to crush it up but it might be worth asking if they do have a suspension for ferrets just for the ease of being able to give it, and mine tasted similar to the way liquid Amoxi tastes, similar bubblegum flavor so it would be palatable for the ferrets (my ferrets like the taste of Amoxi).
My ferret Jasper had liver disease when he was young and the antibiotics wiped it out and resumed him to normal so in my opinion the antibiotics are well worth it.
So sorry for your losses ❤ that is so much to deal with all at once. I’m so glad to hear Bear is doing much better, he’s so lucky to have such an awesome mama and I’m glad his siblings have been sticking by his side.

Thank you so much and thank you for sharing your experience with the liver disease. It doesn’t seem like many ferrets get it that I’ve heard of have it or it’s just not talked about a lot. So any experiences I get to hear about are helpful to me. I’ve definitely had a hard time finding a lot of information about it online. I guess it’s just not as common as some of their other illnesses.

@@FerretTails happy to help! You and your videos are always helpful to me too - Jasper having liver disease as a baby was my first and only experience with it, and the vets still aren’t exactly sure what caused it but they believe it was his diet. I switched foods and did the full course of antibiotics and he had such a great improvement. I can tell you some warning signs I noticed in case things seem off, for example, Jasper kept running around pacing and panting and kept leaving his tongue hanging out of his mouth and then would just lay down. I brought him to Boston and he wound up hospitalized for 3 days receiving lots of intensive care and then he returned home with EmerAid, Amoxi, and Metro. It took a few weeks to notice a real change, it also helped his itching quite a bit.
I hope that Bear has already made a full recovery from his liver disease since you had mentioned his levels had come back to normal. Poor little fella already has enough on his plate!
Oh and I forgot to mention, what a tank baby Oscar has become 😍 such a cutie

@@FerretTails also the Sucralfate caused me to have severe bloating and constipation, again not sure if it’s the same for ferrets but just something to be mindful of! My doctor had me take a stool softener/mild laxative with the Sucralfate suspension, I know ferrets obviously have a short digestive tract so hopefully not the same issue for them.

Ty for sharing this my ferret goes thru exploratory surgery on wed and I’m terrified but I really appreciate seeing what u went thru. How is bear doing?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  ปีที่แล้ว

Im sorry, I completely understand. I hope everything goes well for your baby and that the surgery gives you some good news or at least some answers and options for treatment.
Bear is doing amazing, he is back to his normal self, eating, playing and happy. It’s like the entire situation never happened. I’m so grateful it turned out that way.
He is currently not on any medication for his insulinoma because the vet removed the tumor and as it stands right now he is cancer free. The vet said we could keep him on the medication. However, if the cancer comes back it would be harder to notice because the medication suppresses the symptoms of the disease. So we opted to not do medication unless he starts showing symptoms again. But I am also now taking him and my other older ferrets for vet checks 3 times a year instead of once in hopes of staying ahead of any diseases I can’t see or that may symptoms would not show outwardly until the disease has progressed significantly.
Please let me know how it goes with your baby on Wednesday. 🤞💜🙏

@@FerretTails I will let u know how it goes. I did have an ultrasound done and my vet said she sees nothing as far as adrenal or insulinoma but his lymph nodes near his stomach is a bit swollen. He has had issues with diarrhea the last few years and it was more spread out where he would only get it once in awhile. They treated him for helicobacter thinking it may be that. It did not help. Recently the diarrhea has been all the time. And even more recently he started refusing food. They started him on prednisilone bc the doctor suspected IBD. The Pred did not help he actually got worse. Maybe it was related to the Pred maybe not. So we did a diarrhea panel. He came up positive for ECE. My vet said it still isn’t definitive bc many ferrets have it since babies so he could have GI upset from it or it can be something entirely different. Exploratory surgery is my last option to hopefully get biopsies that can give us an answer. My vet said worst case scenario the ECE went systemic which would only give him very little time to live and there really is nothing that can be done. Lymphoma can also be a bad prognosis yet still better then ECE. Those are the worst 2 outcomes. I have been struggling with the decision to put him thru surgery. I have him on carnivore care thru the vet and he is finally eating again on his own. His poops have firmed up a bit. Not nearly as bad as it was but also not where they should be. He just turned 5. I have had many ferrets thru my life but I hate to say it but he is my favorite. I feel like I have to try everything or I will regret it. Even if it’s just to have answers. But I also don’t want to forsake what could possibly be his last days. Quite the struggle to have this much power over a little innocent soul. I’m doing the best I can. My vet recommends the surgery and my gut tells me to trust her. She specializes in ferrets and even has some of her own. It’s just scary. Seems our situations with the exploratory surgery will have a different definitive answer but hopefully it works out for my little guy. Watching the surgery aftercare really helps me know what to expect as far as nursing him goes. I thank you immensely for sharing your journey. ❤️

@@usmc72409 wow, that’s crazy, but I’m so happy you got an answer and that it was not one of the terrible ferret diseases 💜.
Both Ruby and Bear did ok going to the bathroom after their surgeries. It didn’t seem to hurt them to go, but to be honest they both seemed kind of out of it for the first 12 hours or so after I brought them home and they were on pain meds for first few days too, which I think helped a lot.

If bear likes salmon oil you can put the prednisolone in the oil. We have done this for over a year.

Metronidazole… it tastes horrible no matter how you flavor it… my babies got to the point of gagging when they would see the medication syringe… 😞 There is a trick you can try! Mix it with salmon oil! Ya gotta put a bit more oil than medicine… but there is always a risk they might equate salmon oil to medicine and gag if it’s not hidden in the oil enough… it should be safe to try it once tho! I know it can work! But yea…metronidazole is the nastiest medication in existence… I’ve had to take it myself… I hope Bear is feeling better! ❤❤❤❤❤

@@kimmykakkezz I just went through something similar with my oldest and we ended up doing an exploratory surgery because all his labs and X-rays were not showing the issue. After the vet went in, he was able to confirm he had adrenal disease on his left adrenal gland, a mass at the end of his spleen and he did several biopsies that came back positive for lymphoma. They removed his spleen and left adrenal gland during the surgery and he is now on medication twice a day for the lymphoma. He’s doing pretty good. The vet said we caught it early and he could live another 2 years. He sleeps a lot now days but he always gets up at meal times and he plays like a young baby every once in a while. Without the surgery I’m not sure we would have been able to figure out all that was going on.
