    As much as I love this movie I don't think they gave Rochelle enough of a background story, nothing about her family or upbringing. The racist bully was the only thing shown about her.

    The reason why she wanted to make Chris like her is because he humiliated her by telling everyone they had sex, so she was going to humiliate him by making him wiped for the new girl & her weird friends. Getting him to hold there books & there bags was the whole point. She did it out of revenge. Not because she really liked him. After he lied about her, she was over him. The only reason she went to talk to before she tried to SA her was to try to get him to stop.

    Nancy could have been a magnificent witch on par with Sarah, but her inability to be vulnerable was her downfall. Chris broke her heart and shredded her reputation without remorse, her mother isn't the strongest person and God alone knows how many time her stepdad had been bothering her. A teenage girl with that much passion & focus, but feeling trapped by her circumstances, was bound to head down a wrong road. If she had only opened up to Sarah about how she was feeling, hell maybe even Bonnie, she would have been OK.

    Nancy was looking for a way to not be an outcast.
    Home boy made her feel like she could find her way into “normalcy” and popularity.
    She got her hopes up and was manipulated only to be let down.
    She sees someone that has everything she’s never been and that made her angry and jealous.
    The real tea is that Chris is her mirror.

    Sarah was the conduit (her blood) helped their magic peaked. That's why when it was all said and done, none of them had magic except Sarah.

    • @jama3997
      @jama3997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I think they all had magic, but their magic was something that worked when they were all together, while Sarah could be alone.
      The other three were bonded by trauma and alienation, but Sarah was more worried about personal aspects of herself, not how outside factors affected her life. Bunny didn’t want people to keep seeing her as some type of freak bc of her burns, Rochelle was tired of the racial macroaggression she was facing, and Nancy wanting out of her toxic and poverty ridden life.

    • @michilafox2106

      @@jama3997 I would disagree because didn't they drink her blood and that's when their powers started manifesting. With that little link they were able to use it on their own. After the fighting, Sarah binded their magic. I don't think you can bind something that doesn't belong to you. Perhaps they had a little magic on their own but it was depleted by Nancy. It's been years since I've watched this movie.

    • @missvida6251

      @@michilafox2106 you are correct. Their magic was learned/taught. Which is why they lost their powers in the end. Sarah's magic was natural. She was born a witch through her mother. I agree that Nancy didn’t start as a villain. She was abused and traumatized and was trying to figure out a way to overcome it. It just turned out badly.
    And Rochelle’s character deserved better, and Rachel True deserved better.

    I feel bad for Sarah's dad. Sarah can control the friggin' weather, heal people, and stage a whole ass plane crash with her mind. Meanwhile her pops is slaving away 60 hours a week as a middle manager. You don't think her pops could use a little help? Maybe use some of that razzle dazzle to get a promotion. Maybe use a little wind to blow off some extra roof tiles so the repair is covered by insurance? Maybe a branch "accidentally" falls on the car he's upside down on? He seems like a good guy why can't fortune smile in him?

    • @HiperPivociarz
      @HiperPivociarz ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I feel like she didn't realize how much she loves him until she thought she lost him. Sarah feels like she sees herself like a stranger in her own house. Her dad tries his best, but they seem to struggle communicating. Her step-mom isn't mean, but they don't have a connection. I think in Sarah's eyes the only parent who could've understood her and genuinely felt like they loved her was her mom. We tend to idolize the parent who passed away or isn't around, especially if our other parent seemingly pays more attention to their new partner or their new kids.
      And being a dad in the late 90s, there are going to be issues Sarah faces because of her gender that he can't relate to or fully comprehend.
      I think the last scene being her helping her dad unpack the flowers for the house (I think?) indicates the change in her, since the movie starts with Sarah walking away from her dad and stepmom moving in.

    Nancy wanted to get back at Chris, not just for Sarah, a member of her coven, but also because of her past with Chris. In the early part of the film, Nancy makes it pretty clear to Sarah that Chris is "poison" and that he's not worth her attention. Sarah goes out with him anyway, turns down his advances, and after making it look as though he wasn't bothered by her rejection, Chris goes around telling everyone about how bad she is in bed to try and save face at school. Nancy is the one who catches wind of this and tells Sarah about the rumor going around, and it's pretty clear that Chris had done the exact same thing to Nancy before, leading to her social ostracization along with Rochelle and Bonnie. They also allude to their past as sexual partners when Nancy comes on to Chris at the party, so he was probably leading her on, and making fun of her and spreading lies about Nancy behind her back before she found out what he was saying about her around campus. Nancy saw Sarah's attack as her chance to finally get revenge on this guy who'd ruined her reputation, and she'd get to play mind games with him the same way he did to all the other girls at school. She knew he'd be drawn to her because of her proximity to Sarah, so she lures him away from the party pretty easily, expecting that she would take him to see Sarah. Nancy made sure that everyone saw them going upstairs together, and when he accuses Nancy of being jealous, she scoffs at him, "you don't even EXIST to me!" It's one last final humiliation before she knocks him out of the window, getting her revenge while also protecting her coven. It explains why she gets genuinely upset and hurt that Sarah attempts to put a binding spell on her after the incident, because she not only got back at Chris for assaulting Sarah, she put an end to the love spell in the most brutally efficient way.
    There's still a part of me that feels bad for Nancy, because of the conditions she grew up in, the social isolation she experienced as a result of falling for a really toxic guy, the lack of control she felt she had, and the corruption of her spirit due to the raw power she absorbed through that ritual on the beach. To see her at the end in a psych ward under all those meds, screaming for Manon and feeling like she's flying away, it made me so sad for her character that she would be robbed of her agency and freedom, while the other 3 saw no repercussions for their actions. Rochelle and Bonnie walk away unscathed, and Sarah gets to keep her magic, but Nancy loses everything despite coming up from essentially nothing. That's why I was hoping The Craft Legacy would at least give her character a shot at redemption, but they turned it into a PG13 tirade against the patriarchy with a whole new cast of young actors that ignores the events of this movie right until the end credits. Nancy (and her actor Fairuza Balk) gets a really raw deal in all of this. For a character that was so well-acted and who loses so much, I was really hoping to see her get a win.

    I saw Sarah's love spell as punitive - he treated girls badly and played with their feelings, so she put him in a similar place. It felt like she wanted him to feel the pain of love and the humiliation of openly pining for someone who is mostly indifferent to his feelings. When he became obsessive it was no longer fun fir her.

      A bit. But, I also believe that Sarah had a crush on Chris, & was devastated when it turned out that he was jerk, but, despite that, she was still attracted to him, & wanted him to fall in love with her. Then after he became obsessed with her, she changed her mind & wanted to turn him off.

    Befor i watch the whole video i gotta say, i felt really bad for Nancy, she didn't deserved that end! She lived in a trailer park with a neglectful mother and a very questinable abusive father that touched her inappropriately. Her crush made her be slutshamed by the whole school. Ofc she would try everything to keep the only thing that got her out of the slums, she finally felt like she had control over her life. Her 'punishment' sending her to a sanatorium is plainly cruel, making her end up having no control over her life till she (presumably) dies, no redemption for an already broken child.

      Same but sometime a sympathetic character just because they are sympathetic they need to be redeemed but her punishment is too harsh. (Before watching.) In my own opinion, I think that, since seeing Nancy's backstory, she was powerless for most of her life. She was verbally and physically abused by her stepfather, and her mother was probably too drunk to care. When she found magic and Wicca, she finally became conceited and determined. She put all of her faith, anger, and power into magic. This made her realize that she had power, that she finally found her worth. When you've never had power, it can feel like a thrill when you assert dominance for the first time, like an exotic pleasure. Nancy is a prime example of a girl who had nothing to start, and she ended up with nothing. She had pent up anger, anxiety, and undiagnosed disorder(s). In the deleted scenes, she is seen as insecure and jealous. When Rochelle and Bonnie turn to Sarah, this makes Nancy feel betrayed and powerless all over again, which seems to be a trigger for her. This is why she snapped at all three of the girls, directing her insults towards their most sensitive problems in the past. She is seen to lash out the moment anyone betrays her or hurts her, because she is like a cornered animal.

  • @EsperElves

    One of my favorite movies ever and I just love your commentary. They truly didn't give Rochelle enough character and background story... And Nancy's ending is sad because I think the true villain as always is society or the way a majority shaped society. And these girls suffered from their communities. I love how Sarah transformed her darkness into light and strength. It's her compassion with everyone (despite her and their flaws) that help her heal herself and her life. Truly a great story with lots of shades.

    29:05 I learned a lot this moment about girl world, in the whole Shakespeare "look the flower but be the serpent underneath" so manipulative women can use a guy to do their dirty work for them and then play innocent about it blaming it on them. But girls can do this with other women too. Like if there is one girl int he group who is louder or more aggressive, they just act innocent and let the aggressive one do the dirty work for them so it won't reflect on them. I think Channel #3 does this con with Channel in Scream queens.You see that in this scene how they act all nice when they think she has powers and then when they she doesn't they act all snide and show their true colors

      I guess in that case, did Nancy take control of the group and the other two were her lackies? or were the other two letting her lead the charge so she would face the most penalty of carrying the power? (probably make fewer deals too) and they used her until she went crazy, then tried to do it again with the protagonist.
