  • One of the biggest signs of a poorly designed deer hunting parcel is that you can only hunt it during the rut.The longer your land is productive and offers great hunting, the better your hunting and habitat strategy has become. Most deer parcels can only be counted on during the rut but the good news is that you can change the potential for an all season hunt in 1 season. Here is how...

    I live on my 40 acre property and have primarily been a single food source property. My property was a large early season property. Tons of bucks early. And as the rut arrived most bucks would leave only leaving a few. In the last few years I have changed that some for the better by implementing a lot of your strategy on my property. Access, low pressure, Thick, Switch, bedding etc. Excited for next season because I am adding twice the amount of food at the other end of the property. Thanks for all the great advice.

    Thanks Jeff! We got a foot of snow here in IL, it's probably nothing to you in MN! Lol, feels like a lot to me! But I can see where the deer are at and how good the bedding is with snow!

    Spent all day today creating doe bedding areas next to cleared and ready to go food plots. Also created buck bedding areas away from each food plot with connecting transition where we will be placing water holes and licking branches.So much work and been going every Saturday for the last two and a half months. It’s all coming together slowly but surely.

    Trying to narrow down public land areas that aren't just "rut" hunting opportunities only. For 2-3 year olds is the goal. Diversity and minimal pressure is what I'm trying to key in on. Not an easy task in the mid Michigan area but I've been lucky enough to locate a few. There has been quite a bit of clearcutting lately so that will help out as well. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge to us TH-cam viewers 🙂

    Once again, a Home Run Jeff! Being a real-world small parcel owner/manager, I really appreciate the emphasis that you place on small parcels when you share your valuable info. What you have relayed here as with many of your videos closely mirrors what I am seeing and trying to do on my small parcel(50acres) here in Pa. Thanks so much and keep up the good work - much appreciated!

    serious question, what about the reciprocal? why do i never see any bucks during the rut, according to most of the videos from you iv watched, its probably during the lockdown phase and such. But I'm curious to know if this is a good problem to have. its private property and we have a good mix of deer and I try to apply all the advice I can from you. just curious if this is something I should worry about.

    Glad I watched this video. I have a 127 acre property that I have been developing following your channel and books. I estimate that I have between 15-20 does and fawns total that are residents. I am getting pictures of about 30-35 different bucks during the year. Some a lot and some just few times. We have started taking a few does off each year. Thanks for all you do and your great information.

    Definitely need to implement some of these ideas on our 300 acre Farm I had one camera in a bottleneck or a funnel that got pictures of at least nine different bucks all over 130" cruising during the rut. I did have pictures of a few other small bucks. And some of the bucks I had pictures in other locations on the farm some I had never seen.
    As I said before we have very few does I only shot one doe on the farm this year. We're not anywhere near our carrying capacity in this part of Central Kentucky.
    The bucks tend to roam a lot during the rut.

    Can definitely agree about the bucks and does. I live in the city and have killed several does behind my house during urban archery. Ive seen over 12 does at a time on 1/4 acre in the past and zero bucks. Must have lost a large amount due to the road a few blocks aways because I’m only seeing a group of six at best. Because of the decrease in does I now consistently see about seven different bucks on camera. More bucks than ever. Two at 3y/o, four 2y/o and numerous spikes and fork horns. The mock scrape I made in 2020 has really made my property a focal point. Just need to figure out ways to get them to come in during daylight.

    Trail cams telling me that pre-pre rut is best daytime movement of older bucks by my licking branches. Once there's one in estrus (my thinking) they're not hitting the same trails. Still see the younger crowd all pre rut and rut.

    Had a property in Missouri that I used to be able to hunt and did some habitat work on had a huge problem as being a doe sink. I just did not have enough control to be able to change it enough. After five years of hunting it I did not bother going in there until the second week of November and the bucks were there for about a week and then they were gone.
    It was the only block of cover in a big agricultural area. Almost 150 acres of it. Unfortunately there’s a big lake right in the middle of it that people fished a lot and it really caused the big bucks not to tolerate such activity. I had tons of food all over it but I just could not achieve the depth of cover without more control of the timber stands.

    Jeff , could you do a video on pines in a 50/50 cover to ag scenario? I'm finding once pines get above 8' tall the deer don't use them as much for bedding. Lots of browsing of the lower end of the pines causes the failure.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Greg...in your location in MI about a 2 week period the last few days of October until just before the gun opener on the 15th. Many parcels really only can expect a good hunt around the 2nd thru the 10th of Nov...which is pretty bad.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jay...with 4 year olds+, consistently 4 to 8 all season in MN. And still around
      WI 2 to 5 hanging around fairly consistently into mid January, but I haven't been as diligent maintaining trail cams lately.
      I would recommend the hybrid willow if staggered at least 2 rows, 5' spacing. Not the willow trees, but bushes...

    What do you do with an over number of does we just pull all the does in our area and can’t possibly shoot that many does to manage them and what ends up happening is it’s very good in the rut but we only truly hold small bucks and like 2 big bucks on our 500 acres and most of it is field but we have very good brush in the woods and it’s a major bedding area that we never go in. So I just want to know like what is the best option to do for this situation.

    • @remingtonwendt7756
      @remingtonwendt7756 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not Jeff, but here my thoughts, if a mature doe eats about 2,000 pound of forage a year, and you plant 5 acres of brassicas and that plot does great that’s ruffle 10,000 pounds of forage; that would add up to 5 does a acre. So do the math, and add up how many deer you can have for the amount of forage you can produce. I’m not an expert but, that’s my 2 cent.
