Would there be too much fuel on the floor after cutting 30% out of the canopy to burn? Would you do a growing season burn on the same or wait for a spring burn?

Providing 30% sunlight in the canopy would not put too much fuel on the forest floor to burn. We need to remember that burning in hardwoods is a low intensity fire designed to consume the leaf liter - not trees. You can burn in hardwoods during the growing or dormant season, and it's best to alternate between the two as you manage the stand.

@@Whitetail_Properties great thanks for answering, got to thinking those trees would still be green anyway so most likely would not burn. good to know about alternating. now i just need top work up the nerve to do one :)

I've got a spot to do this year , cutting and burn . You say it'll take a year before I see anything on the ground ?

If you do some cutting and burning this winter, you will have a full growing season this spring and summer in that location. You will certainly see some results after year one. Depending on what you cut, and how well the burn goes, the site should look better into years two and three.

Has anyone tried cutting trees off at knee height for new growth shoots? If so what tree and size did you try or have success with.

We usually cut them down lower, but you can cut them wherever you'd like. One we like to leave is elm. Deer love browsing the new growth. But there are many species you can allow to sprout that deer and other wildlife will utilize. Its also good cover too!

What keeps briars from taking over?

Regular prescribed fire keeps "briars" from taking over.
