Windows security is supposed to be the first line of malware defense. It’s convenient, and it’s free… but is it actually good enough? To test that out, I pitted it against one of the supposed top antivirus providers - and today, we’re looking at the Norton vs Windows Defender comparison.

🔦 Is Windows Defender good enough to protect you from malware?
I wanted to see how well it handles more difficult-to-catch malware. I have 10 samples that I usually use to test any best antivirus 2024 candidates. So, I did the same thing with Windows Defender. I planted the malicious files onto my PC and ran a full scan… It managed to remove 5 out of 10 threats that I planted.
I had to manually choose whether to quarantine or remove the malicious files. That and a pretty low malware detection score are exactly why I wouldn’t call Windows Security the best antivirus for Windows 10 or 11.

I turned off their real-time protection and ran a full system scan. After 10 minutes of waiting, Norton left only one undetected file and resolved all other threats without me having to lift a finger. What’s more, if you keep real-time protection on, Norton should be able to get a perfect detection score. Of course, it’s not completely 100% foolproof, but according to AV-test, in the newest independent December 2022 testing, Norton antivirus got top marks in all categories.

I just unsubscribed from Norton, it’s really frustrating when they keep blocking my internet due to their firewall and all the updates that they are running is making my laptop really slow.

Windows defender also got high detection rate but on tests it never is that good, can we trust av-test?
when downloading those files im sure windows defender picked it up before the download started and it asked you to go through with it even tho its flagged...theres no antivirus thtat can stop poor decision making...if you open a link in a nefarious email and its got some malware that downloads instantaneously and starts taking effect theres nothing that can stop it...if you have good decision making when it comes to opening emails and good passwords with 2 step verification windows defender is fine....norton cant stop a brute force password hack so if you think ur passwords are safe through norton you have another thing coming....theres not a better option than windows defender imo....theres no1 that knows your OS more than windows itself
I had a right entertaining experience when using Norton 360 trial... I saw my cpu downclocked to a comically low level and entertaining pop ups also... This was via my power supply however and a UPS has stopped this.
Plus it wasn't exactly your typical folks targeting me.
20 bucks for Norton 360 premium for a whole year. To me that's dirt cheap. I only use their AV, Firewall and VPN.

I've been with Norton for 20+ years, Norton internet security, and anti-virus, and I've never had a single virus or problem with malware. It's not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.
