      Seems to me the act of feeding sharks during dives and the notion that marine animals should never be interfered with or touched, at odds with each other. Also your not going to drown a turtle by grabbing onto its shell, turtles can weigh over 100kg and are incredibly strong swimming 15-20 knots. If a turtle doesn’t want you touching its shell it won’t be hanging around. Also what harm could possibly be done to a 4m shark by grabbing its dorsal fin?

    • @alvinjohnson2402
      @alvinjohnson2402 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, The reason many experts are against feeding sharks is because you've now changed it's feeding habits. Shark starts associating "humans in with food source" Shark migrates to humans, finds no food source, human becomes the food source. I recommend to read " The Man-Eaters of Njombe" how those Lions main food source (wild animals) were eradicated by "Humans" trying to stop the "rinderpest virus" to save the human livestock population, so evolution kicks in the Lion prides starting feasting on the Humans (1,500 people were eaten) Once you modify nature, evolution kicks in.

    I've never had the privilege of diving with really big sharks, but one of my most memorable dives was at a known Hammerhead point. It was an early morning dive, in open ocean, and we entered the water just as the sun was about to come up. We descended to about 10 metres and then just hovered, waiting for the show to start. After few minutes, the first Hammerhead showed up, shortly followed by several more. Ultimately we were being circled by approximately 15 Hammerheads, who stayed with us for about 15 minutes, and then slowly all drifted away. Excellent dive, and a lasting memory that I will always cherish.

      As for colonialism, it seems people only complain because the European men were better at doing the exact same thing everyone else was doing locally and regionally. I was enamored with sharks in elementary school and would read about them as much as possible. Unfortunately most of the books available were about shark attacks and the like. It really scared me and made me ignorant of the true nature of sharks growing into adulthood. My fear of sharks evolved into a fear of open water that would make me uncomfortable just watching videos. This last month I've been binging your channel. One video caught my eye and eventually they just kept being recommended and you guys are great to listen to and learn from. I went from being afraid of all marine-life and open water at the start of this year to now warming up to the idea of learning to dive, even if it's just to try it once. I don't know that I'd ever intentionally swim with sharks but you guys have really helped me through these fears. It's gone from something I would never even consider to something that seems fun and interesting. So thank you. I was one of your OG subs and I got my dive certification as I wanted to learn to dive safely as I spent all my summers in Kenora swimming in Lake of the Woods. I was diving and I came face to face with an massive sturgeon. It was built like a tank and it was massive. I then went diving in the same spot a few days later and the same huge Sturgeon was actually right there…again!? I was stunned as it seemed to be very curious about me and was interacting with me. It was amazing. I had not known that they were so massive. So I made one last dive before I left and I actually thought if I see that prehistoric fish again I will just be amazed.
    Well I don’t know why but it showed up within a few minutes of me being in the water and it just seemed to hang out near me ? I thought perhaps it was guarding its eggs ?However I think it would be aggressive and this was a male who had very visible scarring from his “Wild West” days in the cold and deep waters. I know that they have tiny brains but this big boy was just hanging out while I swam . I agree that you should never touch or feed them. As I know I am a guest on their turf.

    Gus & Woody, a very fun and interesting video. I've been leaning a lot about marine life by binge-watching Jonathan Bird videos. I have gained so much love for the underwater world because of you guys.

    I started nervous laughing so hard when what he was talking about how you don't ride marine life and I wasn't laughing about it because it's funny or it should be something that's done, but it was so mind-boggling to me that people even attempt to do it. I guess I never thought someone would be dumb enough to ride a dolphin or a shark. 😮

      People ride bulls, horses, elephants ,pigs and I’ve even seen a Russian man on a bear. Wether it’s real or not. Humans have some draw to ride animals. I’m not surprised at all that sharks and dolphins are added to that list

    I live on the coast of Maine and have my whole life. I’ve always been told my fear of sharks is irrational and that will never happen especially in Maine. In 2021 Maine had its first recorded fatal shark attack. A tourist from New York was swimming off the cost of Bailey’s Island with her teenage daughter. This is about ten minutes from where I currently live… the mother did not survive the attack and it seems her daughter was obviously traumatized after seeing her mother be consumed by a great white. At the end of the day sharks can and will attack people. I know a lot of divers and other “oceanic” content creators say sharks are harmless and they have no interest in humans but NO wild animal is harmless…. And it won’t do you any good hanging out of a great whites mouth saying “I told you so” to some TH-camr 🤣 follow your gut folks or wind up inside one 🤷‍♂️

    • @SM-McKraken
      @SM-McKraken ปีที่แล้ว

      Come on now... for every single case of shark attack, from minor "test-nibbles" to fatal maulings/devourings, there are thousands of cases where a person(s) in the water, either knowingly encountered a shark with no conflict, or even more frequently, had no idea a shark had even been in the area, let alone swam right by, often just meters away.
      In fact, there are lots of videos here on the YT, with folks interacting with sharks without any attack. Including drone footage of sharks swimming past all manor of beachgoers who had no idea a shark had just swam by.
      Srsly, if shark attacks were as likely as you insist, there'd be a whole lot less options available in the world of watersports, because we'd be too terrified to dream them up! Every parasailer coming in for a splashdown would just be Doordash for sharks! 🤣 Yes, they're deadly if they do attack, but the fact remains, that they really rarely do.

      She wasn't consumed, she was helped to shore by kayakers. Great whites almost never consume people. If they wanted to eat people, they would and there would be no remains to recover. The attacks are usually either exploratory bites in poor visibility conditions (overcast, particularly early in the morning) or associated with a bag of speared fish or lobster hanging off the victim's hip. Tiger sharks are far less discriminating eaters. They don't necessarily want to eat people (like saltwater crocodiles do) but they aren't put off by the taste, as great whites are. The biggest factor in great white attacks is the weather. Tourists swimming at the beach are almost never attacked because they tend to only got to the beach on fine, sunny days. Victims are typically locals that either surf, paddle or swim routinely, because they are the ones in the water when the conditions are "sharky". The Maine victim wasn't really a tourist from New York just enjoying a day at the beach. She was a retiree that split her time between her summer home in Maine, New York City and Naples, Florida, and since she competed in triathlons and was wearing a wetsuit when attacked, she was probably doing her routine swimming training at her summertime local beach.

    • @munkeyinspace5331
      @munkeyinspace5331 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right she wasn’t consumed, bad wording on my part but the daughter swam over and saw her in the sharks mouth before the kayakers got there. The daughter then swam to shore and curled up in the fetal position (understandably) And great whites almost never consume anyone…? Not sure how accurate that is as there are plenty of cases of GW’s consuming people and attempting to consume people 🤷‍♂️ also like you said most times there won’t be much evidence left so how could we ever accurately know the numbers on that one? And… you’ll never believe this… great whites have even consumed divers 😬

    South African divers are Insane. Saw a case the other day where two men were diving off the coast and one gentleman felt the water pulse around him. When he turned his head he saw a Great White (20 foot) come by with his dive buddy hanging out it’s mouth. It bit his friend in half and took off with half of it. As his friends lower half sank towards the black bottom, the shark came back out of the green murky water and ate the Legs. We should protect sharks sure, but we are at the mercy of a giant fish with scalpels in their mouth.
    P.S. - MANY shark attacks took place right after then person urinated in the water. Our urine has hormones in it that may piss them off. Sharks have bumped through crowds of people to hit a single individual.

    I've been deep sea fishing where this took place (Scottburgh). If the sharks took interest in whatever was on the hook, we'd have to leave. But all the shark cage diving boats "trained" the sharks to come close whenever the engine is revved, because the shark cage divers will do this and then throw chum in the water. It was really interesting to see it happen. Our skipper would rev the engine and then there'd be about 10 sharks around the boat in SECONDS. We'd then chuck some small fish overboard and leave to a new spot before the sharks return.

    My first ever open water was Aliwal. When we first dropped down to a patch of sand so we could do all the things for the course Training we had to sit there and wait for the rest of the class to hit bottom before we could start. While we were waiting our instructor pointed out a Guitarfish. On closer inspection we noticed the Guitarfish had something wrapped around its fins and body. The instructor then got close and cut off this thing wrapped around it and then stuffed the item into his BC. I'll never forget how that thing just sat there and allowed the instructor to cut the item off as if it knew it was getting help. Anyway we did our course stuff and then continued with the dive. When we got back onto the boat after the dive our instructor pulled out the item he cut of the fish and showed all of us what it was. It was A dam g-string! Craziest and funniest thing I've ever witnessed diving. They reckon it most probably came via one of the rivers that pass a township where they use the river to wash their clothes. What a crazy experience. We also got to see Dolphin, tons of raggie, turtles, a few different species of shark, the famous Giant resident potato bass (which I think was speared a few years later and the dude got a massive fine) I got attacked by a parrot fish. The list goes on. Our instructor said all the years he dove that spot he had never seen so much in one dive and that we were lucky cause it was extremely rare.

    I saw one at Hout Bay many many years ago whilst surfing at very big break called Dungeons, I used to think sharks did not like being near breaks that big due to the huge vibrations caused by the waves crashing back into the ocean but this guy didn't seem to mind! He was huge like a gigantic sea monster, but he looked like he was grinning so was probably not hungry. He just swam away. I told everyone but the South African guys did not seem too bothered. This one guy was there with the wetsuit that had "I am not a seal" written on the back of it! I left the water and went home. I caught 1 wave that day above 20ft so was worth it plus I saw an awesome shark that was grinning so no complaints here. 🙂

    One thing I have to bring up is the shark attack stats, well that is based on a beach not 500m from the coast. What I mean is if one person out that far was attack and that person was the only attack it means 100% shark attack rate.
