You might try the 140 grain XTP...it's sort of a "Goldilocks" bullet from carbines/rifles and long-barreled pistols. Still gets adequate penetration, but expansion is great. It also shoots fantastic groups from a 24" Rossi 92.
First, let me say that I enjoy your channel. I purchased a Marlin 357 Magnum rifle when they first came out. Prior to that I purchased an Australian .310 Martini Cadet around 1966. They were chambered to a 32-caliber cartridge similar to a 32-20. I didn't want to change the looks of the rifle but there was no source for the ammunition. I had a friend who was a gunsmith, so I had the barrel removed and re-rifled to '357 and chambered to 357 Magnum. I still have both rifles today but my favorite of the two is the Martini.
@@donaldboethel7430 Thanks👍🏻. Some of these older guns are great collector and nostalgic pieces. They may not be every range trip guns but it’s great to keep them functioning and out there. Some of my favorite range trips are the ones someone shows up to share a range and has items like those that Ive never seen, and probably wouldn’t if they weren’t bringing them out occasionally.
Thank you for the excellent, no-nonsense content . I am in Australia 🇦🇺 with the same 20-inch stainless. 357 rossi . I am about to reload mine in 125 and 158 . This information has been invaluable. Cheers Matt
I love my Rossi R92. With Hornady American Gunner 125 grain XTP’s the 16 inch barrel is getting right at 2100 fps. Similar to your hand loads. For self defense these rounds would be devastating. They feed like butter too. Great video sir.

I have watched several of your videos in the last couple of days and you have earned a subscription. 😊 That penetration is a bit scant by FBI standards but I bet it would still be an outstanding home defense or varmint load. Honestly the AR boys got nothing on the .357 lever for home defense IMO.
@@mkshffr4936 Thanks! I’ve had .357 revolvers for years and knew they were a real workhorse, but I can honestly say, working through these videos has given me a whole new perspective on the caliber. 😉👍🏻
@kentuckyrangetime ive tried federal premium 158, corbon 125, leverevolution 140 all did great the double tap 180 solid has a heck of a punch to it too hitting some 2 liters I need to make another video on it. The armscore 357 hit like 38spl 🤣
Great velocity and about as high as you can get and those would be moving out of a revolver too.Block got walloped good, sectional density is better on bigger bullet even though only a little bigger in weight, its like in 40 a slow 180gr will expand and out penetrate a 155 even though much less energy and velocity. Those old school cup core work good.
There is a guy at the local range who hunts with a lever action rifle using 125s 357 mag ammo. He said they are better stoppers on deer than the heavier bullets. Some of his shots are at 25 yards, some at 100yards, but according to him the penetration is adequate with a big wound channel. My guess is that at longer range, the 125s will lose some velocity, expand less and penetrate deeper than the 11" in the jelly block. I have only shot one 170 lb hog with a 158 grain JSP from a Marlin at around 40 yards and the bullet penetrated completely, on a behind the shoulder shot. We could not recover the bullet so no idea if it expanded or not.
After watching and keeping all your 357mag xtp data i was a little disappointed in the 158gr fp-xtp 2 and 3in barrel results. but i got to studying. i have to Taurus defender revolvers 2in and 3in. in one magazine a while they tested the 3in defender with buffalo bore heavy magnum 180gr lfn-gc at 1300 fps 678ft/ lb energy power. in my guns and ammo revolver magazine 2022 they test a 3 in defender with double tap 125gr 1261 fps, black hills 125 gr 1375 fps ,Winchester 158gr 1174 fps. hp-hp-jsp 3in barrel. on buffalo bore ammunition sight they test smith and wesson j frame 3in barrel 180 lfn- gc 1302 fps 678ft / lb . 158gr jhp 1395fps 686 ft/lb. 125gr jhp 1425 fps 605 ft/ lb .buffalo bore states this ammo is safe to shoot in any all steel revolver, this includes j frame. i already know the defender can handle the 180gr lfn-gas check 1300 fps out of 3in barrel. so my opinion is wow.this has to be the ultimate pocket 357mag load for dangerous game encounters walking inwoods, fishing, hiking and camping, up close and personal. as in my collection i have a webly scoot top break 38/ 200 i want to duplicate the slow police loadings so that gives me a excuse to order a couple boxes of 180 gr lfp-gc to experiment in both revolvers. i cant wait especially for the 2in defender. im excited, it gonna be a real blast. also i have some 357 fp-xtp 125gr I'll load up first and see what what it will do. the buffalo bore 125 gr 1476 fps 605 ftlb. i bet even the 125gr fp-xtp at 1300fps will flatten out nicely. thank you for letting this old man ramble on. Papa wishing you well. 😊
