Dev I love you buddy but you need a correction. The deck type is called a sacrifice deck. That deck has been around since the beginning with fallen angel. Aristocrats is a sub archetype of sacrifice decks. You can see the difference when Rally the Ancestors came out some odd sets later.
First, I’m totally loving the context intro, with the Castlevania music. And, I partake a lot in aristocrats decks myself, so this breakdown analysis was very helpful. Thanks, Dev!
I'm playing a mardu version of this thats mainly just using red for Alesha, Who Laughs at Fate (which can get us so much extra recursion) and Disturbing Mirth, which gives us card draw off of our sac targets as well as a target for Final Vengeance and it lets us manifest dread as a bonus. Speaking of sac targets, I'm also running Innocuous Rat, which is a 2 mana 1/1 from duskmourn that lets us manifest dread when it dies. The only other different cards I'm running are Vampire Gourmand which lets us sac things to draw a card and become unblockable, and then 2 copies of delney to double up on all of our triggers and get some more unblockable swings in. I'm also trying out Song of Totentanz to play after Raise the Dead so you can swing in with everything right away, but im not sure it works right now.
This! This was a great video. From start to finish. Please do more of these history/deckbuilding/deck in action videos. This was great, and as I am fairly new to magic, I would like to explore all kinds of decks. Thanks for making this video.
I know you somewhat mentioned trying to be Rhystic Studies, but I'd like to emphasize how this video is honestly a uniquely wholestic take on a deck tech. I've never seen another channel give Historical Background on a deck, Talk through the deck Card by Card, and then show Gameplay of a deck. That 3 phase approach is really unique and fantastic in a way that no one else is doing, so I really like it. As always, do whatever makes you happy, but I think this take on a deck tech is really unique and valuable and would love to see more. The time you put into it really shines through.
I didn't know this archetype was so recent. I started playing in 2014 so the Rally deck was pretty well established by the time I was paying attention to the meta, so I had always assumed it was an eternal deck. Time to build that BW aristos commander deck I've been putting off for ever.
Best video yet! I love the full screen card layout. Wouldn't mind a short follow up video of "things I'd change If I were spending wildcards on Arena instead of $$$ on paper."
Really nice deck tech. Loved the introduction, loved the breakdown on cards, and loved the example game. I have been playing a lot of Boros Aggro Convoke recently, so that was a particularly insightful matchup for me. I think I'll have to cash in some wildcards and take this for a spin on Arena.
Great vid Dev , Loved the intro man. Good to see you playin ur fave deck. I just had a funny win with my Vinelasher deck. I put a couple of Mossborn Hydra's in and with a Lumra and Aftermath Annalist and a good sport opponent, i put 131,059 counters on my mossborn LOL! Keep up the good work man and keep sac'n son!
+1 Raise the Past. The third copy will create enough consistency to allow leaning hard into aggressive attacks for more reach and less fear of losing bodies. There's only one thing scarier than Aristocrats- Aristocrats with nothing to lose.
Love seeing your Deck Techs! Aristocrats is always a tough deck for me to build. I made a Mahadi Emporium Master Deck a couple years ago when I first got into commander and it never really fully came together. I recently just rebuilt him as a 60 card commander deck (we do this in my play group). I love all the cards it just still never comes together lol. It's a tough theme/ strategy to execute but I like all the cards so I'm gonna stick with it for bit.
Oooh, it's DJ Dev playing my sonnng!!!! Brb, spending my pent up wild cards. Loved this 'RS' but also very retro nich documentary TV spot intro, and also if I was an author I'd totally pay you to narrate my books.
I just found your videos and I really like them. I’m a listener and mostly don’t watch, but I’d love if you read the card effects a little more! You do it rapidly because you’re so used to reading a lot of these magic formulaic phrases, and even just hear it once adds 10000x context for anyone else who listens only! I know you can’t do it for every single card but I know I’d appreciate it! Keep doing what you’re doing though, you’re great at it and I’m so excited to work through the backlog of your channel!
I LOVE when you do these small history classes for a deck archetype. I love the counterburn video just as well! I really hope you revamp that one, by the way. I think it has WAY more teeth even now. @sbmtg
Chef's kiss deck tech with two caveats: 'Crats without Corrupted Conviction feels blasphemous and why Glare instead of Eaten Alive in today's standard when the latter exiles? Hope you do more Foundations deck techs soon, the whole entire list of choices on Patreon sounded sick!
I'm building a rats aristocrats commander deck, aristocRATS!!! I now want to try standard just so I can build something similar. Urabrask's forge feels nuts in a deck like this.
I've been playing a similar deck for several seasons now. I'm running 4x Ruthless Lawbringer in place of Get Lost, and 1 Funeral Room // Awakening Hall in place of one of the Raise the Past.
Aristocrats was my shit since original guilds of Ranica, I bought two boxes worth of cards. I was in Yellowstone National Park with my brother. We drove 2 12 hrs just to get to Bozeman, MT just to get steaks, booze, C.D.s, restaurant food, DVDs and Magic cards. Whole day trip or whole weekend trip if you had a place to crash in town.
Very cool intro and short history lesson :) and a fun looking modern take on the deck, will build it in arena and play some standard for the first time in forever, any thoughts on an Explorer version?
Interesting aristocrats win is perhaps running something like Forsaken Miner with Bloodwitch and Insidious roots or maybe Enduring Vitality or any kind of "Tap card to give 1 mana" and Bart. Nice little infinite drain combo
I have been running a very similar deck this past week and am currently 18 & 4. Very fun deck. Bartolome is the best card in the deck. It’s insanely versatile
I'm so happy to hear that Dev's marriage to Elas is still strong. I hope he doesn't find out how often Elas and I have have scandalous trysts together.
Love this style of deck. Gonna try it out with 2 enduring Innocence instead of 2 of the midnight reapers. The double white is kinda scary, but the effect is similar and saves me some rare wild carss
I like that this deck is budget to start, but I would love a JUICED version. I swapped in the fountain port as mentioned and in the first game fountain port was like the MVP card.
Interesting that the first Aristocrats deck was Mardu. I've tried so many times to make Mardu sac work, and it never does. Orzhov Aristocrats works good and Racdos sac works good, but I just can't seem to combine them. Aristocrats is one of my favorite decks too. I like to put a couple of board wipes in, so if they start outcreaturing me I can wipe, and if I'm lucky ping them for lethal. Meathook was especially good.
I have a lot of questions because I've been trying to build a similar deck. First why annihilating's glare instead of eaten alive? I feel like being able to exile the creature or planeswalker is significantly better. Next did you at any point consider repeatable sac targets like nine-lives familiar, or skrelv's hive (which is basically the modern day bitterblossom).
Curious why you're not playing the phyrexian white creature that makes a mite when it dies over freebooter. Is the treasure relevant more often to curve with than the body to sacrifice to something like Glare and/or trigger Elas and company with? Also very interested to know how this deck fares against Temporary Lockdown if you don't draw Get Lost.
Next how about a non budget version. I would be interested in seeing what changes you would make. Been rocking a similar deck and also one running blue in there as well to self mill.
I considered going Aristocrats this season, but instead decided to run Hare Bloodwitch while I try to workshop my Selesnya Counters into ladder viability.
I'm sure you've seen the deck but I think all aristocrats deck should have at least 2 scavengers talent not only giving a back up win con but sustaining life against agro and giving artifacts for Bart
I hate it so much. I hate even more amateur try-hards who pretend they are pros by flicking their cards like that. I'm so glad I can mute opponents on Arena.
The difference with this deck it doesnt have a top end 4/1 flyer sac indestructible. It also doesnt have 4x 1/1 flyers in one card. Which makes this deck under 50% win rate
I have always mixed up BDM and BBD, I'm not gonna stop now
I think a "this day in MTG history" type video series would be so good.
😂 Amazing video thru and thru. Was that OG Simons Quest soundtrack in there? Absolutely Perfect! I have been waiting so long for this video btw. 😊
Dev I love you buddy but you need a correction. The deck type is called a sacrifice deck. That deck has been around since the beginning with fallen angel. Aristocrats is a sub archetype of sacrifice decks. You can see the difference when Rally the Ancestors came out some odd sets later.
I always mix up BBW and BBC... needless to say it has led to some AWKWARD situations.
Everyone deserves someone who loves them like Dev loves Aristocrats.
Dev!
Those presentations you sometime do at the start like in this video are soooooo good, do more of em!
His voice lends himself to documentary type of videobits
This 100%. So captivating.
Came for a deck tech, stayed for the history lesson
First, I’m totally loving the context intro, with the Castlevania music. And, I partake a lot in aristocrats decks myself, so this breakdown analysis was very helpful. Thanks, Dev!
These types of videos are my absolute favorite of yours Dev. An in depth deck tech and an amazing history lesson. Keep it up !!
Appreciate the magic history at the start with the deck tech
The background and history of this style of deck was awesome! More of that please good sir.
Awesome 👌 playing this in standard going forward 👏 intro was also fire
I didn't know this archetype was so recent. I started playing in 2014 so the Rally deck was pretty well established by the time I was paying attention to the meta, so I had always assumed it was an eternal deck.

+1
mad props for the intro
Hearing the voice of Rich Hagon doing commentary brought me back
Waited for this! Awesome Dev, thx! Spread (aristocrats) love
Oh my god, I missed the classic deck tech so much. Please keep it up, Dev! This deck may bring me back to Arena!
I love budget videos, and while not advertised, this one is. Great!
History lesson in context well appreciated Dev
What a great intro section!

Three minutes in, already love the video, any Castlevania soundtrack always gets an instant thumbs-up from me! Thanks for a great video!
+1 Raise the Past. The third copy will create enough consistency to allow leaning hard into aggressive attacks for more reach and less fear of losing bodies. There's only one thing scarier than Aristocrats- Aristocrats with nothing to lose.
Thank you kind sir, my prayers have been answered. Always here for more Elas!
10 years of watching the channel. Still spitting fire 🔥
Love seeing your Deck Techs!

Awesome video dev!
Very cool deck tech. The history lessons are amazing. Me wants more!
Nice introduction to the video and the deck. Loved this style of intro of history lesson!
I don't play standard or arena, but if I ever start, it will be because of videos like this one. Great stuff as always Dev.
Insert an El Barto clip from The Simpsons when Bartolome does something cool.
What a well-written intro!!
Oooh, it's DJ Dev playing my sonnng!!!!
Brb, spending my pent up wild cards.
Loved this 'RS' but also very retro nich documentary TV spot intro, and also if I was an author I'd totally pay you to narrate my books.
Awesome intro!
I'm still patiently waiting for some sort of Chrono Cross content after years of watching you.
Been a fan for a bit, but easily my favorite thus far. And not just because Aristocrats, always liked that approach since The Rock back in Urza block
Congratulations Dev, would love to see more gameplay footage of this deck if you get a chance (or the alternative version with immersturm predator)
👏Love this unique take on the Aristocrats deck!🎴
I just found your videos and I really like them. I’m a listener and mostly don’t watch, but I’d love if you read the card effects a little more! Great video! Looking forward to all the new decks coming to Standard due to Foundations.
That Kid Icarus music *chef's kiss*
been waiting for this, great work Dev
I also have always been a sucker for orzhov aristocrats as well! I have been playing with nine lives familiar. I like the recurring sac outlet.

Funeral Room // Awakening Hall in place of one of the Raise the Past.
Firstly, love the intro. Thanks for connecting us back to our history.
The deck..... is there room for Zoraline in there?
Aristocrats was my shit since original guilds of Ranica, I bought two boxes worth of cards. I was in Yellowstone National Park with my brother. We drove 2 12 hrs just to get to Bozeman, MT just to get steaks, booze, C.D.s, restaurant food, DVDs and Magic cards. Whole day trip or whole weekend trip if you had a place to crash in town.
I appreciate the draping in this video. I see ripped denim knee flesh exposure.
Made it to diamond rank with this deck today. Thanks, Dev.
Been waiting for a new deck. Love me some aristocrats. Thanks Dev.
Ahhhhh what is that song that plays during the example games near the end?!?!?!
Vengeful Bloodwitch also is good for Committing Crime
Use with Forsaken Miner
Very cool intro and short history lesson :) and a fun looking modern take on the deck, will build it in arena and play some standard for the first time in forever, any thoughts on an Explorer version?

Beautiful video. Keep em coming.

Love this style of deck. Gonna try it out with 2 enduring Innocence instead of 2 of the midnight reapers. The double white is kinda scary, but the effect is similar and saves me some rare wild carss
(Because I already have the enduring)
One of your best Dev's Deck Techs!
Love the deck! Was rakdos an option or is orzhov just clearly better?
Thanks Dev!
I like that this deck is budget to start, but I would love a JUICED version. I swapped in the fountain port as mentioned and in the first game fountain port was like the MVP card.
Right there with ya dev, my all time favorite archetype. I’ve kinda accepted it’s not the best strat, but that makes me like it more?
Just make it to Mythic on Arena with this deck! Thanks, Dev!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely want to see a super powered mardu version
Interesting that the first Aristocrats deck was Mardu. I've tried so many times to make Mardu sac work, and it never does. Orzhov Aristocrats works good and Racdos sac works good, but I just can't seem to combine them. Aristocrats is one of my favorite decks too. I like to put a couple of board wipes in, so if they start outcreaturing me I can wipe, and if I'm lucky ping them for lethal. Meathook was especially good.
Testing Nine Lives Familiar in this list would be interesting - brings more consistency to sac sources through game
Dev - you should toss in a Delney. Doubles all your triggers!
Jarel Threat makes great art.
I have about $50 credit at card kingdom and I think I just figured out how I'm spending it. Cheers dev!
I’d like to see your mardu version of this deck
"Things are fine" 🤣🤣
Curious why you're not playing the phyrexian white creature that makes a mite when it dies over freebooter. Is the treasure relevant more often to curve with than the body to sacrifice to something like Glare and/or trigger Elas and company with? no budget. Auto include at least two or three leyline of void in sideboard. Tooo many BS reanimator decks
I hope we get Xathrid Necromancer on Arena when we get "the rest of Pioneer" so we can really supercharge this archetype.
You my spirit animal dev
Awesome video!!!
Dev, would you try making the Mardu version? 👉👈
Great intro.
I considered going Aristocrats this season, but instead decided to run Hare Bloodwitch while I try to workshop my Selesnya Counters into ladder viability.
Just asking, What do you think the main weakness of yhis deck? and which deck types of deck it is weakest against (Mono-Red Aggro and etc)
Ra, ra, ra, boom-de-eh!
What the hells a fountain port?
I'm sure you've seen the deck but I think all aristocrats deck should have at least 2 scavengers talent not only giving a back up win con but sustaining life against agro and giving artifacts for Bart
nice deck!
But now you need to make a version using cat cards
Loveeee this video
Profuse video :)
Face it, Dev, you need ONE!! card that is preist of the forgotten gods 😢
Erm, actually, there was no lantern control in alpha….I think…
Woot!!!
i liked this video
Fe fi fo fum. Where is the immersturm
Next to the craw wurm
not having luck today, 4 losses in a row
Because the deck isnt that good
2:44
That beautiful card flick sound
I hate it so much. I hate even more amateur try-hards who pretend they are pros by flicking their cards like that.
I'm so glad I can mute opponents on Arena.
The difference with this deck it doesnt have a top end 4/1 flyer sac indestructible. It also doesnt have 4x 1/1 flyers in one card. Which makes this deck under 50% win rate
My first thought too, but maybe dipping into red for immurstrum predator can act as an “Falkenrath Aristocrat @ home”. It’s another sac outlet.
@ it’s worth a go but feels to mediocre. The deck is too fair and needs to be refocused
Currently 3 wins and 42 losses with this deck.
