- Today we continue the South West Trains series with a film showing train action on a Saturday night at Richmond in London.
Richmond is a very beautiful suburban town in southwest London right by the river Thames. It has two train stations: Richmond station and North Sheen station, from which Richmond station is the major one, the subject of this film. Although the town has only about 20,000 inhabitants, the station is served by frequent South West Trains services on the Waterloo to Reading line, and it is also the terminus for the London Underground District line and the London Overground Richmond branch.
The film first focuses on the South West Trains services, which run at platforms 1 and 2. We see a mix of class 450, 455 and 458 trains. Towards the end the film then shows some London Underground services on platforms 6 and 7, which are formed of modern S7 stock.
The station announcements played at this station are-like at most South West Trains stations-by Phil Sayer and Celia Drummond; in the film we mostly hear the voice of Celia.

@TheRenaissanceman65 London is far enough north that between May 24 and July 21, there's no period of true night time.
Very clear, specific , and somewhat detailed announcements, I notice, provided prior to train arrivals by the station public address system.
(By comparison, all we get at Chicago IL USA suburban area stations is simply that there's some train approaching....)

6:25 - Why does the train make that siren noise? The motors are obviously not going to be spinning that fast when the train is just pulling away and it doesn't sound like a compressor or anything so I am confused
Michael [APFX] it’s to signify that the doors can be opened, once the train stops we listen for the siren to press the button to get on or off the train. Also helps blind people.
It’s the sound of the inverters on this type.

Miles Campbell it's the 455/7. When they were made the class 508s had one coach removed to make 3 car units. The removed cars were put into the 455 as a result.

Is the London train service the only one in the world where each station announcement announced every station that the service will be stopping?
No. afaik the Japanese do this too, but usually not for the slowest stopping services.
This is generally done in Great Britain and also in Belgium and France
Alex Lien if you come from america, when I went there, I noticed there weren't many announcements. even on the NYC, I found it hard to tell which station I was at or if I was on a local or express train.
In Finland they announce it on the train, but not at the station.

The train station was made in 1970 and the trains have loud rail they are 3rd rail like all rail lines.
