South West Trains and Southern Action at Clapham Junction (UK)

  • Today we are at Clapham Junction in the south west of London, UK. Clapham Junction is one of the busiest railway stations in Europe. Having 17 platforms and up to 180 trains per hour passing by, there is literally a train entering or leaving the station every few seconds.
    The station is serving South West Trains and Southern services as well as London Overground services.
    This film is actually a continuation of my South West Trains series from September 2014, and indeed this was shot during the beautiful evening of September 13, 2014.
    Enjoy the film!

    What is it about trains? All they do is travel a route predetermined by the tracks they are on, yet I could watch them all day long.

    • @TheCastleMarch
      @TheCastleMarch 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a class 458. Its replaced by 458/5 sadly. By the look of it, it should be an express service but considering the platform it is going to hounslow, reading, windsor, woking or weybridge unless the platform changed

    Interesting variety of trains here...I admire the various colorful paint patterns/schemes. (About all we have here in the Chicago IL USA area is the utterly bland & bare stainless steel look....)

    • @kiri2235
      @kiri2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the commuter trains in Chicago have any liveries? Also, the UK have loads of different models with different codes, one of the trains here are the Southern class 377, which is 5 or more years old but still very modern!

    • @kiri2235
      @kiri2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also recommend searching "Southern railway NHS livery", it has loads of stripes and colours for the NHS during coronavirus.

    • @HRHolm-bi6zu
      @HRHolm-bi6zu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiri2235 Chicago suburban commuter rail (called 'Metra') coaches are pretty much run-of-the-mill plain boring silver in color. Once in a while one can be seen with a color scheme stuck in with the silver ones. Locomotives very much a blue-and-red motif with white 'Metra' lettering/logo. Pretty much a uniform design for all of the lines, In contrast to British, European, Japanese trains, which sport an amazing variety of color-combination designs, from what I have noticed---same for their main intercity passenger trains. U.S. Amtrak intercity trains also very much alike, except for some of the ones running the 'northeast corridor' (northeast Atlantic coast between Washington and Boston). Chicago city transit trains (CTA) also are almost all a basic silver, and very plain 'boxy' in appearance.

    • @kiri2235
      @kiri2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HRHolm-bi6zu Do all the trains in the US have a locomotive, unlike England where all passenger trains are operated by a cab?

    • @HRHolm-bi6zu
      @HRHolm-bi6zu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiri2235 This can be a bit complicated to answer without going into real depth, but I will try to give a 'general' sort of answer. First, it depends on what type of trains are involved. For large city-only transit networks like Chicago's CTA, electrically powered, some carriages with motors and control cabs are placed in front, no separate locomotives used. *Commuter rail* (city-suburban) systems such as Chicago's Metra, however, generally have separate diesel locomotives. In a few cases, however, commuter rail lines that are electrically powered (Chicago has but two) likewise generally have motorized carriage/cab arrangements leading, like Euro/Brit/Japanese types and U.S. electric city styles. But not always, sometimes there is a separate electric locomotive, but that is generally on the U.S. east coast in states like New Jersey. Commuter and city rail transit can and do vary by city. Boston's MTA, for example, is an integrated city/suburban commuter transit system that uses both electric and diesel. It also includes the surface-based light rail tram lines. It can be a real mix of types, again varying by overall local region. To summarize, there is no general collective uniformity regarding this sort of rail hardware context amongst U.S. cities, unlike in Europe or Japan. U.S. *intercity* longer-distance Amtrak passenger trains all have separate locomotives, whether diesel or electric.

    Does one need a permit to so seemingly casually photograph/record at London transit train stations? When I visited Britain in the mid-late 70s it was strictly forbidden to take photos in Underground stations, I found that out firsthand & firmly from a plainclothes Brit cop. Just curious.
