Moving from a Porsche to a Chevy which is *SMART.* Good job on this one. Still haven't pulled the trigger yet on a single BEV ever but hopefully you get your hands on a Cybertruck the most polarizing vehicle design coming to market in memory but the only vehicle where design wholesale is even talked about which is always a good thing.
Obviously, tech is the new luxury! So how is their OTAU which is how they will improve the tech? How fast was the touchscreen, to get an idea of how well their tech are integrated?
I appreciate the timely feedback. Regarding interior capacity, I couldn't decide between a Fully Loaded Tesla Model Y and a Rivian R1S. But I also believe that a vehicle's price should match its caliber. A quieter car appeals to me more than a noisy one.
I have owned a Tesla and currently own R1T. Cannot compare the two of them. Different animals. The Rivian is designed for adventure. The suspension is noisier but it has a ton of articulation. If you want comfort, buy the x. If you want versatility and capability, go with the Rivian. In hindsight, Rivian engineered a very remarcable vehicle. It can keep up with a Jeep or drive like a Cadillac with a few taps on the screen.
R1S has the ability to put roof racks and a kayak (I'm a keen sea kayaker - my multiple day touring kayak is 19 feet long) on the roof. No roof carrying ability in the X would be a deal breaker for me, and I go camping a bit so the V2L sounds wonderful in the R1S. Thanks Kim, great compare!
When you say it is louder, you hear the motor noise, but there is less road and wind noise versus any Tesla I have experienced, personally. The motors sound awesome, especially under full power. The suspension itself is also softer and the ride quality is better.
I think the Rivian is beautiful, but the real issue with all the EV's outside of tesla is the charging network. The electrify America chargers are hugely unreliable and much slower than the Tesla superchargers.
Informative comparison, Kim! Some pluses, some minuses. I think it's important to note that the R1S is still in the early stages: I would expect it to have some odd quirks that need to be ironed out -like that unexpected sound. I'd opt for it over the Model X, regardless, but… we don't need either, as they are such large vehicles, and I prefer better energy efficiency. There are other new EVs now that I would be happy with when we relinquish our Model 3.
I like the fact that the R1S (is) actually a sports utility vehicle whereas the Model X is a SUV luxury street car and a SUV in name only; you wouldn't dream of taking the Model X onto a steep rocky trail but wouldn't hesitate with the R1S.
I have a Model Y and love it. Things i like about the Rivian R1S is you can out a roof rack on, have a spare tire available, more storage area in back and more rugged SUV. The X is sexier but less utilitarian.
So the motors are noisier, as designed. Some people prefer the noise. What suspension setting were you on? That could explain the back and forth of the acceleration smoothness level . It's also possible it's something you get used to. As for ride quality again what drive mode were you in? The Rivians drive modes make a big difference in rider quality.
I can’t wait for part 2, I really like the Rivian pickup but this model fits our needs a little more. I won’t be buying either anytime soon but I’ll be adding this video to my comparison chart for when the times comes!!
Kim, Thank you I am on my 4th Tesla but for Rivian generation one they seem to have hit a home run. When my R1S comes I will give you my opinion too But will continue to watch your updates
I went from Chevy Bolt( which I loved) to Model 3 and the first thing I noticed was the Tesla had a more refined regen braking better interface/software and the charging infrastructure is years ahead .
Drove it last week and loved it. I didn’t hear any noise really. Several Tesla owners here have the truck and say the Rivian build quality is much better than their Tesla. Rivian still has $10+ Billion in the bank so should be fine. I like Tesla too- nice to have a choice
And the mystery noise? My guess will be the air compressor for the suspension. Have heard it is quite loud in the R1S since it is all enclosed now back to front.
The motor noise in Rivian is intentional, and personally, I enjoy it. It brings back some of the character I missed from my ICE cars. Rivian direct/solid mounted the motors to create the sound, where as a Tesla suspends the motors with rubber isolators to keep that noise from transferring through the vehicle. (2 time Tesla owner (S and 3) and current R1T owner). All a matter of preference obviously, but aside from the autonomous suite, I've yet to find anything in the Rivian that I don't prefer over a Tesla. Especially on a road trip... The Rivian seating in particular is FAR more comfortable than either of the Tesla's I've owned.
After driving a silent car you hear every noise in other cars. Our first electric car was the Nissan Leaf. It is truly dead silent. We test drove a rear wheel drive model 3 and it was just a little louder. When we received our dual motor Model 3 we were very annoyed with the front motor noise. After 4 years we really don’t notice it anymore.
I love my 2021 Model S Plaid That performance in that car is so ridiculous including the way it handles, right now I would not trade it for anything else
hard to compare these two cars, they're for very different people. It's utility vs ride quality. That aside, pricing incentives has changed significantly in the last few months. For me, at these price points, X plaid wins hands down but only because I prefer a better ride quality, speed, and a little flashiness doesn't hurt.
Great review , but where do you charge it besides home? EVGO, Electrify America & Chargepoint ? All of these lack super chargers while on the road. These bulks box are not aerodynamic nor will give more than 250 miles on a single charge. Let us know in 6 months when you do a cross country trip and how long it takes to charge this behemoth at a non Tesla charger.
At the end of the day if I were to choose between these two American made EV SUVs I would wait for the third and forth American products to compare a Ford F-150 Lightning based SUV and Chevrolet Silverado EV based SUVs. F150 Lightning is already quieter and more comfortable on long trips vs Model X or Rivian. I imagine a Cadillac version of long based 3 row full size EV SUV might be the smoothest or quietest of all of them plus having the most luggage space, leg/head room for adults in the third row. Plus the latter has the true hands free Supercruise on highways - the smoothest driving aid software of all from North American market. Besides with Tesla Supercharging network opening to all other EVs the advantage of long trips in Tesla product will be erased by equal opportunities for everybody. However at least for 2 years new Tesla models will have serious advantages in charging convenience on long trips being able to use as Tesla as CCS network with an adapter.
I wonder how much of the Rivian noise was real and how much was artificially generated to meet the government minimum noise requirements. I'm super annoyed by the amount of manufactured noise that my Ioniq 5 has, in-order to meet those requirements. It's the only thing that I don't love about it. I would love to shut it off, but then again an older Bolt went by me yesterday and it was dead silent, I suddenly realized why they want some fake noise. The Tesla has active noise reduction in the radio, the Rivian might not, but it might be added later.
Totally agree with your comment. The government noise standard is there for people on the street up to 20 miles per hour. And she was driving under 20 mph when they were making comments about the noise.
pretty sure he's referring to the air compressor. most likely its the location of the compressor and Rivian not putting enough sound insulation. in the truck its outside the cabin towards the rear wheel well. probably same location in the SUV but since its in the cabin much more noticeable.
100% is, I have a R1T and recognize that sound anywhere. Mine never runs that long and you really don’t hear it in the truck. Usually only hear it when parked and changing ride heights.
I’ve drive Rivian and Teslas. It’s not obnoxiously loud like she says so idk what she’s talking about. Also the current model 3 we own sounds like an airplane on the runway when you’re on a freeway.
I can’t over the the frontend of the rivian. Those vertical lights doesn’t look good to me. Aside from the front lights, it looks too ordinary like any other suv. X in the other hand feels like I’m in a spaceship.
I don't care for the noisy compressor for the air suspension, but I love ❤ hearing the electric motors delivering that electrical power. Of course, I also like the dual exhaust on an IC vehicle. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm curious to hear your initial opinion on the new volvo ex90, remember watching an older video where you said one of the reasons you went with tesla rather than volvo was that the cars weren't all electric yet.
Keep that in mind that, you are comparing cars that differ by almost $45,000. You could buy a luxury sedan just for the difference in price. It's like comparing Hyundai Elantra to BMW M3 Competition, Nissan Rogue with Range Rover, Tesla Y vs Tesla S Plaid, you get the point ;)
I think the styling is a big difference and is of course subjective. I don't like the model x exterior at all. It doesn't look like an SUV, but instead like a bubble, and the rivian looks like an SUV. Thank you Kim for doing this video! I also have a 2022 Model X (5 seats), and have an order for another one due in March. I have been doing my due diligence on the R1s and even put in an order for one, but cancelled. I've been going back and forth on this. You gave me a lot to think about. I think the 2024 Rivian will address a lot of your cons... hopefully the Model X will come with an auto close frunk by the time I get my new one
7:07 I don't at all understand this comment. I've seen the R1T in person and nothing about it made me feel like it was more luxurious than my 2022 Model S. It was good, maybe on par in some ways, but certainly not superior. Can't imagine the R1S bests the new Model X in this regard.
Yeah, after being inside of both the Rivian and the Model X, I was surprised to say that the model x was significantly more luxurious, even in terms of material quality.
Rivian will definitely appeal to the "I need noise" crowd. It's a great mix of rugged and luxury. I'd probably go with the X based on this assessment. I had to get rid of my Y for the VW ID4 because of refinement and ride quality issues. I feel like a lot of these more visceral things work for the truck more than the SUV. Thanks for sharing!
Kim's review: Rivian has better overall quality & interior materials, bigger frunk, more leg room, more functionality, off road abilities and a tailgate. People in the comments: "Tesla is better" 🤣🤣🤣
I have driven my Tesla Y to Las Vegas, Twice to San Diego and one to Phoenix. Let’s have Smart EV driven to those place from Sacramento. If they can beat that with Tesla ecosystem. Then I might blink! But until Then I’m with Tesla!
I've heard that they are still working on ride quality in the S. Seems like perhaps the settings were all taken from the T, and with a different wheel base, may not be quite right yet. Liking my T, funny I felt like the regen on my neighbors S and Y was a little too soft. And while both the Y and S feel more car like, I love that I can just hop a curb/drive over a muddy median when I feel the need :-) Thanks for the video and perspective!
At time 7:20 where you press the button for the seat to slide forward for access to the back. It appears quite hard and fast Ted way the seat shot forward, it also looked like it startled you a bit. I could see someone getting hurt by that. It could be smoother, don’t you think?
Great video! I love my Model X and I'm trying to get my brother to go electric and this should give him a good example for someone who needs 6 seats minimum.
There is no question people will forget how to drive when FSD truly works. I had some problems that stopped me from driving for a year. When I stared driving again it took a couple weeks to feel confident in my abilities.
This review is biased from someone who’s driven a Tesla for a very long time. I have met a lot of people who have told me they much prefer the Rivians over Teslas. You’re also talking about a $40k price difference… for what you get in the Rivian compared to the Tesla Model X you can’t compare. And a fun fact the Rivians are faster than the Model Y performance.
Good comparison - thanks! I have back issues so the seat is wicked important to me. I have a Y and thinking about the X, but would love to know your take on long road trips in the R1S! I have one on order due late spring, but in sitting in one briefly, they feel more like bench seats than the REALLY comfortable Tesla seats. And then there is the charging networks. Your thoughts??
I’ve driven an R1S and a Model X but I don’t get this video. The R1S and the model X are nothing alike. The only things they have in common is that they are both electric and both called SUVs and I really wouldn’t even call the model X an SUV because it isn’t designed to go off road….at all. 🤷🏽♂️ Two totally different cars with two totally different missions in life. Ugggghhhhh…..
Thanks for the comparison. Had a S/X/3/S over time here also, now in a Hummer EV SUT now (Edition 1). Loving it but huge change/different animal, but love that it isn't delicate per say like Tesla is especially where we live. And the size = awesome. Sure the Hummer EV SUV is going to rock next year.

Model Y all day
Model y isnt even close to same caliber.
The real question is where your going to charge this Rivian besides your home. Tesla has a network of superchargers while Rivian only has 4.
Water noise, is the water is inside the door, they forgets to removed the door drain plug, every vehicle has a door drain. Underneath the door.

Ditto on the stereo !
I’d take the Rivian and extra cash. $80k sounds like a bargain lol.
Yes. Far more capable vehicle for significantly less money.

It has two little compartments under each front seat. Not as big as a glove box, though.
Thank you 🙏🏾
R1S better people mover at 40k less. The R1S looks pretty awesome.
Probably pretty accurate, our next video dives deeper into these similarities and differences. Really interesting comparisons.
Great video! I love my Model X and I'm trying to get my brother to go electric and this should give him a good example for someone who needs 6 seats minimum.
I'll stick with Tesla, too many complaints about Rivian, good luck with yours.
New price for the X starts at 79k
There is no question people will forget how to drive when FSD truly works. I had some problems that stopped me from driving for a year. When I stared driving again it took a couple weeks to feel confident in my abilities.
As awesome as the R1S is...taking trips is a nightmare with the current non-Tesla network. Until Rivian adopts Tesla's network, forget it.
That isn’t ideal and hopefully Tesla opens up the Supercharger network soon to all EVs. Doesn’t Rivian have a network?
lucid tesla comparison would be nice
This review is biased from someone who’s driven a Tesla for a very long time. I have met a lot of people who have told me they much prefer the Rivians over Teslas. You’re also talking about a $40k price difference… for what you get in the Rivian compared to the Tesla Model X you can’t compare. And a fun fact the Rivians are faster than the Model Y performance.
Good takes.
If you sell the X after the 10k in aftermarket vinyl and ppf and the wait you had you enjoy throwing money away. 🤦♂️
Exactly! vinyl + ppf + ceramic is also overkill.
So what I’m hearing is that you just wish Tesla would improve the interior materials a little bit and you wouldn’t feel the need to cheat haha
it's good one but that one is kind of truck. that tesla is different. there is Range rover looks similar and the price is cheaper
Exactly what I said in this video, almost verbatim.
I love how y’all sell sexy and keep it classy
kim tesla will gonna be kim rivian
Thanks for the comparison. Had a S/X/3/S over time here also, now in a Hummer EV SUT now (Edition 1). Loving it but huge change/different animal, but love that it isn't delicate per say like Tesla is especially where we live. And the size = awesome. Sure the Hummer EV SUV is going to rock next year.
