@michaelu.5321 is the only thing to get, tn barely exists anymore and it's more expensive than ips. it sucks. I prefer tn. I don't look at my monitor from the side
VA also has much better contrast, black doesn't look grey. They mainly suffer from ghosting at higher hz but some of them don't. I got a 240hz one and was pleasantly surprised by the color accuracy, contrast and input delay with virtually no ghosting.
I recently got my AOC 155hz QHD with a VA panel and i cana barely see any ghosting, only time i see it is when i focus on the ghosting and even then im not sure is it ghosting or my eyes are hallucinating
@wearefromserbia9714 dude, it's ghosting. I tested a lot of monitors in stores and AOC fights va ghosting effectively only at 240hz and close to max response overclock. But at that point, you're fighting rgb overshoot instead of ghosting, and that colour pop is noticeable when you know how it's supposed to look. It's not on AOC, acers, asus and others, what have you, had the same issue at 1440p monitor segment, except samsung g7, but that one was priced as 4k 144hz at the time, and it still has its own issues. Some, like Philips, had good VA monitors at 1080p 240hz where you forget about ghosting and overshoot, but at 1440p and 4k they fail because the pixel count is way higher, it takes more time to get more pixels to reflect input, that's a given, and the panels are slower on top, because 240hz and above at higher resolutions is a completely different price point. Cheap VAs are not the simple answer, there are more colors than just black, you have to compare color gamut, color accuracy, that's dynamic contrast, and at that VA doesn't have an advantage over IPS like the internet tries to mislead, IPS panels are simply quicker to respond accordingly to rapidly changing image, which is why they don't suffer from ghosting and have better color accuracy at lower refresh rates.
Same, just got a VA 165hz 1440p monitor and its got way better colors than my old TN one. It does have some ghosting but is mainly just in very dark areas of a game and it's not that bad, you get used to it quite fast. Would totally recommend it for someone looking for a cheap great monitor.

The Neo G9 has a ~15,000:1 contrast ratio, vs the 1,000,000:1 many OLED displays sport. Also usually slower than LCDs due to the backlight, unlike blazing fast OLEDs. I actually have a 4K mini-LED monitor, which is basically what happens when you try to make an IPS monitor function like an OLED. You get the same incredible blacks as an OLED along with a brighter display, but you can often get a ghosting effect because of how the mini-LEDs can't turn off the screen pixel by pixel the way an OLED can. It does so in "zones". I personally love it, though an OLED at the same size and resolution as my monitor would be objectively better for picture quality. It cost me way less money though.
I have’t changed my TN panels in 10 years. Speed is everything if you are going to play competitive games and when I bought them, I was too into fighting games. Nothing I saw on other displays convinced me on replacing them. I still wouldn’t replace them but my PC is way too good for what my monitors are so I’ll be buying an Oled display during this year or the next.
I'm an oled user, 2.8k 90hz display, yeah The quality is so good you never go back the only fear we have it is the burn marks alto the burn marks can be avoided if you take precautions
Picked up a xps 15in laptop with OLED and it's pretty amazing. I don't game but I use it for photography and it really does make me want to upgrade all my monitors to OLED
I agree on the OLED point. I was IPS before, and my 2nd monitor is IPS, but my main is OLED and man. I can't imagine anything else now. Its SO good. My IPS even with HDR on looks SO washed out and grey.
As a gamer I picked a VA monitor, i dont play fast games, and i value contrast ratio over blur and speed. It really is up to the user to decide. But OLED is the way to go if you can afford it
I´m using the "Aryond a32 1.3", it´s a 2k VA panel with 165hz. As already stated in the comments, VA can suffer from ghosting, mine does but I actually don´t see it. Ghosting only appears for me when I test it with a website or something else, so I play a lot of games and favor the color accuracy way more, so I chose the VA panel instead of IPS and TN. If I would be playing Overwatch or Counter strike with 240+ FPS strong CPU and GPU, I would definitely choose a high grade TN panel.
Yep I got the DCS bug about a year ago. I can't stand to think about how much money I spent just to get the best possible experience out of DCS. R7 7950x, RTX 4090, 64 gigs DDR5 5200, and a 32 in curved 4k OLED Alienware monitor. It looks fantastic
This is probably the best and most useful expalantion of monitors I have seen so far. Including the fact that this is the only explanation people need!
This is the component that is worth saving and spending big on. If you buy a good one, you can use it for a decade. Not only that, but it, your keyboard, and your mouse are literally your interface with your computer (headphones too, but that's a whole other issue). Treat your eyes right, the monitor makes a huge difference in how you perceive your computer.
I just got a ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM QD-OLED 4k Monitor and he is completely correct I will never go back to IPS or VA panels again. I'm coming from a Asus 35-in ultra wide 200 hz 3440x1440p VA panel w/ HDR 1000. My new QD OLED blows it out of the water. 😅
Hopefully OLED monitors will be cheaper. I'm using an IPS 1440p 170hz monitor and i'm really happy with this balanced experience, bought it for around $170 too (Viewsonic VX2780).
OLED screens can suffer from screen burn-in, especially when static images are displayed for long periods. Many mobile and smart TVs use OLED technology, so this is a potential issue to be aware of.
just found out my monitor is a TN, had no idea these were a thing! since i play rhythm games a lot, it was probably good, but not that good for the thousands of hours i spend drawing
Bought an oled monitor and returned it after a week. Looked good but its brightness and burn in issues were not worth the extra money over a decent ips monitor. I’ll probably try it again in about 3 years to see if the technology matures enough to make it a complete no-brainer
I have an IPS for my main monitor, I'm considering getting a small VA panel for a new secondary. I have an ancient LED DVI-D panel, which still looks pretty good especially considering the age, but gaming on it is nauseating.
i got a $2200 Samsung QLED. literally the best looking screen I've ever sat my eyes on. they say it's not a black as an oled but this thing blends in with walls in the dark
i was super into computors as a kid but could never get into it because i was poor. then i worked hard for years and now im finally in a position where i can build an average gaming pc only to find out that all my knowledge is so out of date now that i have to re learn EVERY thing. last time i built a pc we still had crt monitors.
Ive used OLED displays on several phones and can confirm that statement about other display types being awful afterwards is accurate LCDs feel extremely washed out after using an OLED display
VN is super good for contrast and price/performance. But they usually have ghosting issues with dark scenes. I have one and love it for the price, but I rather have an IPS if I can afford it. OLED is a no go mainly because of potential burn-in. Let's wait for miniled monitors.
I bought an OLED Tv a while ago, and if you're debating it, let me tell you, they're worth the money. It's like enabling a secret graphical setting. Every colour pops, and every game looks better. The difference is phenomenal, and I would rather spend £700 than go back. The only thing that comes remotely close is MiniLed and QLED/QNED.
Samsung Odyssey G5 34" has a really nice VA panel, I highly recommend it. Only downside I found is that you need a decent mount for it, since the stock stand can't really hold up the weight.
Probably 2018ish I got an Acer ED320QR for like $120 at Walmart for black friday. It's VA and it still works great! The plastic power button cap broke off but I can still hit the button on the PCB inside, just a little harder to reach For those who don't want to look up the specs: 32" 1080p (not the best, but for the price it was an amazing deal) 165hz refresh rate AMD freesync 1ms response bought for $120, on amazon its like $160 (at the time i bought it at walmart i think it was like $200?)
I used a VA panel for quite a few years before going back to IPS, largely due to not liking the artifacting in blacks and other little issues the panel had. For my money, IPS is probably the best for gaming if you can't do OLED most of the time.
I have a vg27aq1a and 2 vg27aq's that were recommended by LTT, they're IPS but at 1ms response time and 144+ hz I don't have any complaints about them being "slower"
I've had an IPS and switched to VA. In my opinion VA has the best colors out of the two, IPS panels are noticable less contrasty than VA panels. But ghosting is an issue for VA tho
Idk what OLED monitor prices are in the US. But here in Bulgaria EU the cheapest 27" is LG for €780. Samsung Odyssey G8 OLED curved 34" (3440*1440) costs €870. I saw it on sale for €820 on Black Friday before Christmas 2023. I've never seen OLED monitor prices for $700 in Europe.
As someone who has and uses IPS, VA and TN almost every day, IPS is by far the best option. My VA monitor suffers from heavy ghosting in dark scenes and websites. my TN panel displays colors perfectly fine, but when looking at the IPS one, it's a whole different world
We are already using oled. Our phones have oled screens, honsetly if you can't afford it, it doesn't matter that much, resolution is much more noticeable.

i still love my old CRT monitor
I'm an oled user, 2.8k 90hz display, yeah The quality is so good you never go back the only fear we have it is the burn marks alto the burn marks can be avoided if you take precautions
Picked up a xps 15in laptop with OLED and it's pretty amazing. I don't game but I use it for photography and it really does make me want to upgrade all my monitors to OLED
I have an IPS and it looks great but at the end of the day we're talking pixels and frames so it doesn't really matter too much.
I don’t play competitive FPS games, so IPS was an easy choice for me when I was choosing a monitor for the PC I built.
But OLED is the way to go if you can afford it
Me, using a TV instead: "interesting."
If it works for the PS5, it works for the PC.
I went OLED when a good one was on sale....the other three really don't compare at all.
If your budget allows it, it's a must.
I am very happy with my £400 MSI 240Hz, IPS monitor. It depends what you use it for. Still perfect for FPS games.
The show at the end is called "Lost In Space" for all 1 people wondering :3
Ive had oled phones for 10 years. I have no trouble switching back to ips screens on other devices. Its all about being able to adapt
VA isn't bad for the price point. found a 27" curved acer 1440p 170 hz monitor for like $140 for my partner a few months back and it's not bad at all.
OLED screens can suffer from screen burn-in, especially when static images are displayed for long periods. Many mobile and smart TVs use OLED technology, so this is a potential issue to be aware of.
Seems like oled is the mechanical keyboard of the panels, when you use mechanical keyboard, you never go back
I will say, I worked hard to afford that oled. It's really nice and I try to care for it very carefully.
hes like " this is impossible to answer in 60 seconds" proceeds to give a perfect answer in like 10 seconds
No no not the "LOST IN SPACE IN THE BACKGROUND 😢
just found out my monitor is a TN, had no idea these were a thing!
since i play rhythm games a lot, it was probably good, but not that good for the thousands of hours i spend drawing
I really hope they continue lost in space I think that was a really decent tv show.
Ive used OLED displays on several phones and can confirm that statement about other display types being awful afterwards is accurate
LCDs feel extremely washed out after using an OLED display
Personally i have a 240 hz VA panel but id say just get an IPS unless youre certain the VA panel has a good g2g/ response time and no ghosting
Just the IPS is the better option for my programming work and some casual gaming
btw 144hz is enough for me
Super hyped for OLED prices to drop.
Probably 2018ish I got an Acer ED320QR for like $120 at Walmart for black friday. It's VA and it still works great! The plastic power button cap broke off but I can still hit the button on the PCB inside, just a little harder to reach
For those who don't want to look up the specs:
32"
1080p (not the best, but for the price it was an amazing deal)
165hz refresh rate
AMD freesync
1ms response
bought for $120, on amazon its like $160 (at the time i bought it at walmart i think it was like $200?)
Yep.
Can confirm: once you switch to OLED you can't unsee TFT displays flaws.
I've never seen OLED monitor prices for $700 in Europe.
have had my 1440p LG ultra gear gen 1 for like half a decade its a va and it still is going strong
IPS being slow is old news. IPS has pretty quick refresh on their panels these days
"Lost in Space" was a great show.
As someone who has and uses IPS, VA and TN almost every day, IPS is by far the best option. My VA monitor suffers from heavy ghosting in dark scenes and websites. my TN panel displays colors perfectly fine, but when looking at the IPS one, it's a whole different world
IPS for graphic designs that require high color accuracy.
VA for FPS games that require high frame rates.
We are already using oled. Our phones have oled screens, honsetly if you can't afford it, it doesn't matter that much, resolution is much more noticeable.
