Graham Nash & Gregg Allman January 1991 TV intvw/performance

  • Graham Nash's shortlived interview/performance show the Ring aka The Inside Track kicked off in December 1989 with Grace Slick & David Crosby, which you'll find elsewhere on the BetaGems channel (probably not for U.S. viewers however, one of the song copyrights got it blocked in the U.S.). The show returned under a different name the following year with interviews between Nash and Bob Geldof, Michelle Shocked, and others - those episodes coming to BetaGems shortly. This is episode number three, from January 1991, featuring Nash with Gregg Allman. The BetaGems channel also has "Allman Brothers 9-8-91 Sub Base Groton CT UNRELEASED," "Allman Brothers 2-29-96 late night TV performance," "Allman Brothers 11-15-94 late night TV performance," "Gregg Allman 1-15-88 late night TV performance," "Dickey Betts & Brian Setzer 11-20-84 late night TV performance," and "Graham Nash & Grace Slick December 1989 with David Crosby TV intvw/performance." In addition, you can find "Graham Nash August 1987 late night TV performance" and "The Hollies 1965 two songs video jukebox" on this channel.
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on TH-cam or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

Gregg was a great talent..what you see is what you get. As you see in this program, he loved what he did and despite his battle with alcohol/drugs he was able share his musical gifts with us. I always loved his quiet demeanor..never patting himself on the back…..he just went about his business in a professional way and brought the audience along for the ride. Epitome of a simple man trying to live a simple life despite being a world famous entertainer.

I was weaned on this music from having older brothers I would sit and listen to The Allman Brothers at Fillmore for hours and hours on our big old cabinet stereo TV combination and I would just listen to that album over and over and that was it I was hooked and all the southern bands that came out of the south at that time it was music I loved and couldn't get enough of now dickey Betts is gone and just can't believe how time goes by we're all getting older and we should cherish those things that we used to love and I sure do miss a lot of the music from back then the 70s it was a great time for music and to grow up I can't believe this story about Vietnam that he shot himself in the foot but I understand but then you got guys like toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker band who did go to Vietnam and got a purple heart it wasn't for everybody I can't really say because I wasn't the draft it was done by the time I came of age and I just joined on my own but I remember my brother my oldest brother sweating it out every night when they were doing the drawings like the lottery for the Vietnam draft it was crazy times but I sure do miss them

I studied classical piano for many years, never listened to rock & roll because I thought it was awful. Several years ago I heard this great song "Sweet Melissa" and had to find out who sang that great song. Since that discovery of Gregg Allman I've regretted the years I lost not listening to this artist and all because I was a snob. He's a magnificent singer, an artist with an abundance of soul, a true musical genius who plays guitar, organ, piano, a composer, who sings so tenderly and honestly I cry because he touches me as no other artist has ever moved me. God Bless You Gregg. May you be with God serenading Him and His heavenly chorus of angels, saints, and all the regular folks God chose to live with Him in His celestial palace.

We opened for the Allman Bros Band in '69 in St Petersburg, FL. We sat in a circle backstage and passed around a couple of joints and talked about Music. One of my favorite memories. Our lead guitarist, Lenny Austin, and I stood 6 ft from Gregg during their performance, just behind the curtain. I said, "Lenny, we are never gonna see these guys again. They are going straight to the TOP!" (Our keyboard player shot himself in the foot and got out of the draft)
