(WATCH in 4K) In this video we drove to Elwood Pier and tried to zoom into Ormond Point with the 100x Space Zoom on the Galaxy S20 and S21 Ultra to find out the Zoom Quality from these two cameras. What's the difference between last year's S20 Ultra and S21 Ultra. Spoiler Alert - 10x Optical Zoom!
Samsung has done an impressive job squeezing a 10x Optical lens into a tiny body of a smartphone, but how does that stack up against a Compact Camera like RX100 Mark VIII? We also tested it out. Spoiler Alert It's not too bad... but the RX100 Mark VII still reigns.... for now.

4:30 Actually, the periscope camera does capture more light per time from an object than the "3x" camera (nearly three times as much light per time as the 3x camera). But the "3x" camera captures more light per time per pixel (not twice as much, but four(!) times as much). Light per pixel isn't the same thing as light per object (or light per angle).

The sony RX100m7 was much better at 10x (big difference), considering it is zooming in mechanically with a "larger lens + 1" sensor + 20mp".
But yea, it's still really cool the S21U can come this close to it.
I always look forward to these kinds of dedicated zoom quality comparison videos.

@@JeremyToh Yea, I'd be looking forward to having the S22 bring a 20x optical zoom periscope similar to what the P50 Pro+ might have. Also it would be nice if they improve their photo algorithms in collab with Google. The photos are a lot of the time watercolory or overly processed and artifacty when seen in 100%.
The sensor size plays no role here. If the S21 Ultra had exactly(!) the same lens as the Rx100 VII, the only difference (when compared with the Rx100 VII) would be the smaller field of view. Then you might even get more detail per object with the Samsung phone as the S21 Ultra sensor has more pixels per mm². Some people think that a large sensor is like magic, but it's actually just a larger area and its only effect is a larger field of view. It has no effect on the amount of light per object, if you use exactly the same lens. A sensor can only capture the light that goes through the lens, no matter how large the sensor is.

Incredible zoom! I love watching the optical zoom kick in with the periscope technology. I love this kind of zoom when I record my kids soccer games and track meets. I can punch in so close!!
which phone do you have?
@@andretonno3992 I use a Samsung Note 10+ but I use my wife's Samsung S21Ultra. Record the games in 4k at 60fps using the 10x optical zoom is so awesome!

There is an update for s20 ultra and the camera works better now and have more functions from s21 so try again and the results will be diffrent.

Did you check the Zoom from the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra? I would be interested which one is better because the Mi 10 Ultra reaches 120x Zoom

S20 Ultra slays the S21 Ultra from 4x to 10x. Can't compare it at 3x but the S20 4x is better than 3x on S21. From 10x its obviously much better on the S21. It really surprised me as I have seen a lot of reviews and never heard it mentioned until I got both phones in hand to compare.
s20 ultra 4x camera also have way larger sensor and more megapixels and a brigther sensor, so overall its going to be better in low light on paper
@@omegalongdong yes, the 4x was much better at night photos than the 3x and the 10x couldn't be used most of the time. What really shot the S21 Ultra in the leg was horrible postprocessing in Auto camera mode. Both zoom lenses made a league better photos in Pro mode (with no manual adjustments).
I just switched from the s20 ultra to the s21 ultra I don't need a SD card I rarely use that much memory I still have plenty in my 128gb s20. But I chose the s21 250gb and WI trade in im only playing less than $400 for it. And surprisingly I use the zoom a lot for just average pics or waiting for the train I'll zoom in to see when the next one is coming. But I also just love taking moon shots and the 20 ultra is great but seeing this I know the s21 will be wayyyyy better so I'm stoked for these new pics.

Sometimes in life… well actually as an amateur TH-cam person, you just make the most with what you have. Luckily it came out already. It was a very difficult edit to keep it interesting. But we’re glad you enjoyed it. 🙏

i bought a s21 ultra (refurbished) and it workerd.... AWSOME.
I appreciate the Samsung is great for a phone zoom, but it's **definitely** not "quite on par" with the Sony camera in terms of image quality
In terms of image quality, we will have to agree with you on that. When we were writing that line, we were taking into consideration, image quality, design, usability, reliability and battery life. When you look at it from that perspective, you can forgive the Samsung's image quality, because it makes up for it by providing a better user experience (faster HDR processing, touchscreen capable), a thinner form factor, continuous recording (Sony will overheat after 45 minutes), and superior battery life. I am sorry I didn't elaborate this, and perhaps I should next time. Thanks for tuning in and for dropping us a comment.
