today's video is a weekly vlog, and an example of what a week in the life of a cancer research student looks like! if you don't know already, I study translational cancer medicine at king's college london, I am a postgraduate master's student working on a cancer research project! usually I bring you my day in the life of a cancer research student videos, but I thought to give you a better idea of what an average week may look like, I will create this vlog! lot's of you who are studying biomedical sciences, or are generally interested in research or science tell me that you think it's great how passionate and enthusiastic I am about my course at university, and that is very true! but in this video, I wanted to show you more of the behind the scenes, and the realities of what research is really like! - or my experiences of it anyway! I hope you enjoy!!

I'm almost finished with a research placement that I'm doing and I've definitely gone through some of the more negative aspects of research. Some days I'm so exhausted that I wonder how researchers even cope with it! I thought the placement would be more straightforward but we've had to do so many detours from the original plan and we didn't even have enough time to complete the whole thing :( The amount of repeats we had to do was driving me INSANE tbh, and it's even worse when you don't get good results. I still want to do research, but now I know for sure that it won't always be exciting and fun.
And also, please take care of yourself and try to take breaks every now and then! :)
Aw thank you lovely! and with a bit of struggle haha but I love it, so I find time! :) I totally get you! I think it is very useful to see the negative side of research just as much as the positive - and again I get you! my project was the same, it starts of straight forward but you have to keep altering as you go along, but that is the nature of scientific research. Don't let it put you off though, you need to be very resilient in science - I'm still learning that too. Personally I have days where I think its super fun and I love it, and other days I just want to run away and hide haha, if you really want to go into it, hang in there! you got this! And thank you lovely, I will try hehe! :)

I love you vlogs. I'm a year 13 student and I recently had a summer school to attend in July at imperial. I shadowed a PhD student and I can totally understand your frustration. We performed a PCR trying to identify a gene and it just did not work. I had a go at it too and Yh it was messy especially when placing the solution into the gel holes (I don't know the correct terminology 😂😂) . That is literally how science works. But at least you still have something to talk about ☺️
Jungshook you would've been pipetting a DNA mixture (containing restriction enzymes, primers, etc) into an agarose gel for electrophoresis :) fiddly work!
hahaha Jungshook, I absolutely know the pain! plus, PCR is sort of known for being extremely fiddly and messy! Danielle in the comment below said it right! haha, and absolutely, just having the experience of it is amazing :)

atousa it definitely was fiddly. Using a graduated pippet for the first time was a bit overwhelming compared to the experiments I've done at school 😂😂 but I kind of got used to it by the end

What camera gadgets do you use for filming TH-cam video's? Just wanted to know as I also want to start my TH-cam channel, so can you please share about your camera equipment and how you edit your videos as it would be very helpful for a beginner like me to learn from an experienced TH-camr like you
I use the canon G7X and I use final cut pro to edit on my mac, that's it! :) and my editing is kept quite simple, I would recommend looking for tutorials online because they will be more informative :) good luck!
Hey Atousa, I was just wondering what medical school cycle would you be applying for? like are you going to start medical school next year ? Also if you can make a video about the process for applying (e.g When to take the ukcat or when to get started with the application) that would be lovely. Also love these vlogs, they are so helpful.

i am working in computer field since 2005.Is a wise decision to join in a M.sc Molecular bioengineering course at the age of 38.what are the employment opportunities of the course with out p.hd.Whether securing p.hd admission is difficult after M.sc.

Hello! :) and it's okay to have doubts, EVERY job will have those stresses behind the scene, you will learn to cope with it as you go along! The impact of research, depending on the research, can be huge! so many diseases are being treated now because of the new medicines we have found through research! You can still do research with a master's but you will be more like a research assistant. Doing a PhD is the best way to be able to do your own research :)

Frankly, after watching the whole video, I feel like I am actually uncertain about choosing which major for my undergraduate now cuz studying biomedical sounds so exhausted, even to you (base on the things you talked above)! Should I continue writing my personal statement on it? Or reconsidering other subjects,for instant, chemical engineering? I don't want to regret after entering university:( So, dearest Atousa, can you plz give me a little bit advice? I will be so grateful!!

Kathy Kathryn I'm sorry to say, but to find a course or job which isn't stressful these days is like playing the lottery. Just study whatever puts a smile on your face, or for most people, whatever makes bank. Life is a struggle this century, especially in London, for example.
Hi lovely, honestly my best piece of advice to you is this...think of the most difficult academic thing you have gone through and overcome, and remind yourself that at the beginning it seemed very scary! this is EXACTLY the same, it can be tiring and stressful at times, but the bottom line is that I love it, and if you think you will love it too, don't be scared, just believe in yourself and know that even when it gets tough, you will find a way to pull through! I think the biggest regret you will have is not going for something you REALLY want to do, maybe your REALLY want to do those other subjects like chemical engineering, but in general I would say follow whatever you want to do the most because everything has its own stresses - including chemical engineering!

hey lovely, yes someone else asked this too - to the best of my knowledge, this is the difference: but by all means do your own research as well 'biomedical sciences is more about how disease occurs and how we can come up with treatments for diseases, whereas biomedical engineering is coming up with devices and medical equipment to help with certain medical conditions :)'

seems like ur exhausted.😫anyway doing experiments with positive and negative results is scientific ryt??😇😇 thats really interesting. thats y i like biomedical science. ar the biomedical scientists ar decently paid in uk. if u can give with figures per month it would b helpful
I go through cycles of being really exhausted and really energetic! haha, and yes you are right! it's part of the research package I suppose! and honestly I would love to tell you but I really don't know, just because there are so many different levels to it, so it can really vary person to person based on experience etc. sorry about that!
who over looks your work and are you ever asked to do any experiments by other then hospitals?
