I think watching someone like yourself who has started at the bottom and worked up is really important. 'Hope' is what beginners need and to see that it is possible to have success after starting from zero is really encouraging.
I studied photography in a post-secondary education university for which I also paid much money! Believe me when I say that I learned so much more by watching youtubers' videos like yours, the Bite Shot(Joannie), Peter McKinnon, Chris Hau etc! In the two years studying at the university, I learned only 40% of the photography! And also, I didn't have from them, a real support in what I wanted to do which is Travelling Photography...So yeah....I totally agree with you, bc I've learned so much about the thing I love the most by all of you...and I still am! And also, this video is an oportunity to test me again on portraits, so thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Alexander this is an amazing insight! Thanks a lot for sharing it as I’m sure it’ll help others a lot. 🙏🏼 I couldn’t agree more with you. I’m so grateful for TH-cam as well because I learn every single day from my favourite creators. Love it! ❤️ So excited to know that you’re giving portrait photography another go! 😍 Keep it up! This was the most motivating video I ever seen. I'm 23 y.o. guy from Slovakia, living already a year in the Netherlands. I am excited about photography since I was kid, and finally a year ago bought my first DSLR camera to learn photography. I spent all my saved money to buy my first beginner DSRL, and since I have it I try to get better and better. I always shoot for myself, but since I bought a better lens for my camera I got more and more enthusiastic about photography. I get more motivation, trying to learn more and more by watching videos and photoshoots, analyze myself what I have to improve, and this is the way how I get more and more excited and motivated. Watching your videos, got goosbumps all the time, because I felt your energy how you giving us your thoughts and experience of photography. Thank you for this! I really love it, you give me more energy and even more motivation about photography, and promise I will improve myself to be a good photographer
You almost made me cry 🥲 Your video just gave the greatest motivational boost even if I am pushing myself everyday in my photography! You answered perfectly to each questions that I was asking myself. Thank you so so so much for this!
Hi. I'm 57 years old now. I have been taking photographs since I was 8 years old. My first camera was a kodak with disposable square flashs. They came in 5 or 8 in a box. It was fun. In 2004 I took a photography course. I just wanted to just to learn new things. I already knew everything. They didn't teach how to shoot photography. I already knew this. I have a certificate on photography. I'm Puerto Rican. I use my photography on graphic designs art work for my books. Photography has opened many doors for me. I use it to create my art work for my music albums as well when I'm releasing new music. I do a lot with photography. The possibilities are endless.😊
Hey! I'm also a graphic designer and after 3 years freelancing i'm adding photography to my freelance business. I've been shooting pics for 25 years and have never had the confidence to step out there. Everything you say is spot on. Do what makes you happy and succeed at it :)
You are so right, i went through a whole course that cost me a fortune and honestly didn't learn as much as i have learned on youtube and creator courses.
thankyou for telling me about how you began, the realest on youtube righ now! "photography is intense" "i used to get nervous before shoots" ahh i felt so much in this video!
Out of all the videos I watched , this one is the one that stuck the most! I love how you explain everything and share your own experience. Great video
I completely agree! I taught myself how to be a graphic designer. I don't have a four-year degree in graphic design, but with perseverance and dedication I was able to learn and grow. I am now managing a team of designers. I'm still learning in this field of photography, and I know I can learn even more by watching TH-cam videos, trying out various shots, and listening to professionals. I'm loving everything I've discovered by experimenting with my camera settings.
Hey Raica, your journey is really inspiring, Congratulations on that and all the best on your photography journey. One question though if you don't mind, What is your favourite way of learning graphic design on your own as a beginner
@Kiev Kelvin Thank you for your question. When I was a beginner, my favourite technique to learn graphic design was to see how other pros did it, to learn from your mistakes, to perform self-study, and to be curious about how to do it easily. I want to work smartly, not hardly.
@@raicabardophotography Thank you so much for taking your time to reply to this Raica, if you don't mind me asking, are there any pool of free resources you can point someone who'd want to embark on the same journey? Same here! I feel heard and understood 😅 I was so frustrated with myself last night because I was trying to edit a photo on a program I’ve never used before. The photo wasn’t sharp enough (first time working with shallow depth of field) so I was trying to sharpen some areas and it just was not working for me. Her saying PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE is actually making sense in my small brain lol I knew my shutter speed wasn’t high enough. I’m glad I have another practice opportunity this coming weekend (gender reveal). So far, I found that I love shooting close up portraits AND editing them doesn’t feel like a chore.
Absolutely, experience is everything and should be ticket to any job. I’ve learn so much on TH-cam and by purchasing tutorials. But, most importantly you never know everything, constant shooting is the best way to learn. I love your channel.
Absolutely agree with not needing to go to university. I encourage people to go and to focus on business. By all means get a dual degree, there are lots of things I never would have learned without getting a photography degree. But I also was working at the same time. It took me 10 years, took classes outside of the degree path, but most importantly I was working. Nobody cares about your degree, nobody is going to not hire you because you don't have a degree. But I know more techniques than I ever would have known to look for and how my camera actually works so I can better to achieve my goal.
I've been studying photography alone for the last few years I want to say maybe three or four. And I hate to say that I started to lose passion with it, not because money was the main objective but because I truly love it. I guess I got stuck in the same old routine with it but just now watching this has brought new inspiration into my life. I can honestly say thank you because I really needed to hear all of this. From this day forward I'm going to experiment a lot more with different kinds of photography and not just sticking to portraits like I have in the past. I now know and see the importance of experimentation, after looking over your work it fills me with joy.
You made my day with such meaningful words. So happy to know that this video helped you to find that inspiration again. I know how hard it can be sometimes. Experimenting is a great way to fall in love with photography again and again in infinite ways. 😍 Keep it up! 🥰❤️📸
Where do you study it at?. And honestly can you break down what you mean by study?. I find it hard to study the subject of photography in the literal word sense because it’s all so subjective.

I agree with you on TH-cam University. I use TH-cam for many things even outside of my photography. It has helped me tremendously accomplish tasks I would not think possible. For photgraphy creators, one of my favorite is Manny Ortiz.
I studied Photography at university some 16 years ago and I must agree with you. At that time there was no accessible way to obtain knowledge like nowadays since youtube had barely any good content and most techniques (I mean mainly retouching techniques and some tricks with digital cameras) that are used now were not even invented. So university was the best way to learn. Now with so much content on youtube and other places I would not recommend it. After a few years of hiatus due to various reasons I now try to refresh my skills to try to get back into photography again and I learned more from youtube videos than back then in my university.
I just randomly discovered your channel. I like your energy. I'm a semi-pro photographer who's been doing it just for fun for 30 years. I have done paid work such as weddings, portraits and etc, but only when I am asked. Soon I will be creating two photo businesses, and the reason I have confidence to do that, is because of what you said; don't get caught up in the technical aspects, just do it. I paraphrased a bit. I do like the technical side too, but clients and friends don't care about that, just capture the magic by simply doing, and that will teach you far better than all the technical book reading.
The best way to learn and we are talking about photography is to just get out there and practice by taking photo's. See what works see what doesn't, note your settings. Yes use advice from people such as you Laura but the only way to get your own unique style is trial and error, with plenty of practice. Also print/develop your own works, for that makes you a better photographer. Theory does have it place as in the understanding of light and how to use it to your advantage and how to control it. It is a big subject which requires plenty of hands on practice.
What a beautiful video! Hey, I’m Maya, Thank you so much for sharing. I’m a pet caregiver in Los Angeles and taking photos of my client’s beloved pets is my favorite part of the job. Realizing now that I want to get an actual camera other than my smart phone & potentially start offering pet photography services. Did a you tube search, found this video & am officially subscribed! Looking forward to learning more from you.
You're the best! You can't imagine how much you are helping me! I am studying the second year of Photography and don't feel confident with my English language. I have many challenges to cope with.
I have some experience with cameras as I've worked as a photographer for a local media station and I learned stuff about cameras being there. Now I want to do it as a hobby with my new digital camera and have so much more to learn so I'm happy I came across your video and channel!
Thank you so much Laura for your hrlpful advice. For 3 years i have been trying with books and seminars fron internet to become a good amateur photograpfer because i love photography.
I enjoyed this 😊 just starting out as a hobby. Im an electrician but wanted to do something completely different that I swore that ill never get into. Bought a basic entry level camera Canon EOS 700D and hopefully good vibes here on out!
I went to University and I went from an average event photographer to a commercial advertising photographer fairly quickly, doing workshop lighting Learning all the light shaping tools which taught us how to light different subjects and textures to create shape, form and contour was a great education we had weekly prac lessons shooting different subjects and we had access to cameras and all the studio lighting you can imagine. it helped me decide in what genre photography I wanted to pursue, you also mix with a lot of like minded students make connections and we had regular excursions visiting photography studios that did from fashion, industrial, product photographers to even sports and wedding photographers. Highly recommend if you have the time and can afford it. The fundamentals of photography hasn’t really changed only the gear we use, don’t focus on the gear, learn your lighting and composition which is something you tubers don’t know how to teach you its something you need to learn by experimenting yourself or taking an education. For example at Uni I learned how to light Wine bottles really well and managed to get heaps of work as we have a huge wine industry in the Hunter valley near my area.
This is all many of us needed to truly hear, the photography journey is an amazing one but it can be a stressful one when without clues, thank you big sis much love from Uganda 🇺🇬
TH-camrs like you Laura are really life savers. You have been really inspiring me since I came across your work on Vero. I am in the initial phase but I feel very stuck often because of not getting enough opportunities to get shoots. I think that's where I am going wrong. Focusing on money rather than the craft. I will try to improve my craft even more now. To be a good photographer. I really want to market myself and work with brands and individuals as well but I often get very stressed as I am not able to do that. Where I live in India, it's quite a task to make a living through Art. Harsh truth but it is. I think It will take some time and I will make it eventually.
That’s exactly what happened to me when I first started. I fell in love with it and then I did my first wedding and then after that I started getting money hungry for it and lost my ways in the craft.
I purchased an old Minolta manual film SLR just to learn about ISO, lighting, finding clear focus, and how to use prime lenses. I watched tutorials and just took my baby out in the yard and took some pretty beautiful pictures of him, and some yucky ones too in the beginning. I’m a stay at home mom, I can’t afford classes or even a new camera. I want to move to a DSLR and I’m looking at 10 year old camera and lens kits for about $200. I love film, but I also want to be in the digital world. I have many friends/contacts who just want good quality family photos that don’t break the bank, and I’m looking to fill that gap. And I just love it as a hobby, I’m not looking to support my family on photography, but if I can make enough to cover the cost of my equipment and software I consider that a success.
So genuine woman you are! Loved your video! I am starting photography as a hobbie, want to make some money later, but yeah, like you said I wanna focus on enjoying it and learning about it! Thanks for your video it blessed me so much! Awesome testimony for all that you went through! God bless ya! Keep it goign!
Great video! One trick that worked well for my pizzas at home was turning the broiler on for the last few minutes before putting the pizza in and turning it back to 550. Super heats the steel for a the perfectly crispy bottom while cooking the pie in the perfect 4-5 minute mark. Great looking pie man!

your video has helped and inspired me so much! I am a 16 year old studen and i really want to be a photographer but I didn’t know how to start but now I know thanks to you! I really want to learn and practice more and I’m sure your videos will help me and inspire even more💗
I am at the stage of starting from 0 (I have the equipment however). This conversation just motivated me a bit more. "Grabbing my camera and just take pictures" is where I need to start.
Laura, you are setting people free! The terminology and theory can be overwhelming and discouraging at times! It’s good to hear from a veteran that we don’t have to be fixated on that. It’s good to learn but not to beat yourself up if your learning style for this stuff is a bit different. Blessings!!
I travel a lot and take photos of everything 😂 They're actually quite good and I'm going to make a proper hobby of it. I'm so happy I've found your channel ❤ Thank you from an absolute beginner x
I started shooting streets back in July 2021 (with a Canon 90D and a Sigma 18-35 1.8, which was an amazing lens btw!), and now I shoot street portraits (for fun) with a Canon EOS R6 + Tamron 24-70 G2 + Sigma 70-200 Sports lens, and my Lightroom Classic editing skills are skyrocketing pretty quickly lel, now that I don't oversaturate everything. High time I start making money soon
I am so glad I have come across your channel. Really needed to hear all that! You have inspired me to move on. I have been into photography for over a year❤
Oooh wauw. You have such a heartwarming personality. I just started out learning photography and editing with skillshare actually. Will definitely watch more content of you. 😊
In the course I have choosen we have a mix of elements 😊, which includes photography, I am going back to uni as I want to refresh my skills, but I need more in depth, I have experiment with different materials, as I run a balloon business and want to expand even more, only opened up a few months ago 😊
100% agree. Practice your skills and keep a good notebook of what your settings were. Digital allows you to have immediate feedback, but film photography requires patience and through thoughts.
Although photography has a degree of theoretical knowledge attached to it, you can become too hindered by it. You definitely learn far more by simply going out and finding what works and what doesn't. As long as the basic understanding of exposure is grasped, the rest, such as light and composition etc is really down to trial and error. Thankfully with creators like Laura, who make the impossible seem possible, it gives encouragement to those who want to give photography a try or those who want to turn it into a profession. I enjoy watching Laura's tutorials as they are realistic which is her appeal; and her eyes. She has amazing eyes.
can you do a video about the organization?? Because there are many things to manage and I feel overwhelmed all the time :,(; like: how to romember all the projects, all the people that you sent emails, all the activities etc... thanks for your videos you are super nice!!
TH-cam has basically become the "Go-to university" of learning photography... There's a few legitimate outfits out there that offer courses in photography (NYIP is one that comes to mind...if they're still around!) But like you said, not necessary to attend in order to learn the subject. Most learning basically comes simply by trial and error - a hard rock way to learn and I know, ppl would rather cut the "error ' part out but it is what it is and there's really no way around it!

Hola Laura! Your video is really helpful and has really good advice! I've been practising photography since 4 years ago but only with my analog camera.
That’s exactly everything I said in this video. 😄 So yes, totally agreed. 😊
PS: Arc De Soleil❤❤❤
You're the best! You can't imagine how much you are helping me! I am studying the second year of Photography and don't feel confident with my English language. I have many challenges to cope with.
I have some experience with cameras as I've worked as a photographer for a local media station and I learned stuff about cameras being there. Now I want to do it as a hobby with my new digital camera and have so much more to learn so I'm happy I came across your video and channel!
tks for breaking everything down. you express everything so well... thanks
Loved hearing your story - so inspiring that you’ve been in the field for 14 years! 🎉
You are 100% right Laura.Street is the best teacher. 🖐🤠📷
Love your videos. Somos de Puerto Rico y a veces solo miramos sus videos para oír su acento. Clásico y perfecto uso del ingles. Bravo 😊
😄 Muchas gracias! Me alegro de que os guste mi acento. 😄 Una abrazo gigante! ❤️
Where to you go to university
@@deronjenkins5784 Ultimo collage then UTS Sydney
Thank you for making this video. Too many other TH-camrs are just focused on gear instead of motivation, technique and other subjects in photography.
great tips. thx. one thing surprised me- i was positive once you started to talk- you are Greek. Good luck, good light
i am literally starting from zero, but always wanted to pursue it, so im now starting to. thanks for making this video
This is all many of us needed to truly hear, the photography journey is an amazing one but it can be a stressful one when without clues, thank you big sis much love from Uganda 🇺🇬
You’re very welcome Simon! 🥰 I’m glad you needed this video and I hope it helped. Sending you loads of love to Uganda! ❤️
@@LauraBC thank you, we are waiting for you when you decide to pay a visit to the pearl of Africa
You are such a blessing 😂😅❤! I can’t afford photography school and I have the passion for it and always wanted to do this! Thank you for all you share and do!! 💜
😍 So happy to read this. Go for it! All you need is practise and the online world. I’ve been self taught. 🥰 Big love and thanks for being here, I hope you enjoy my channel!
your video has helped and inspired me so much!
I wish I can get my equipments
I have taken really great pictures with my phone camera
Laura, you are setting people free! The terminology and theory can be overwhelming and discouraging at times! It’s good to hear from a veteran that we don’t have to be fixated on that. It’s good to learn but not to beat yourself up if your learning style for this stuff is a bit different. Blessings!!
i’ve procrastinated with photography for the longest & your videos are amazingly motivating laura. gracias💗 por tu transparencia y amor.
Gracias Laura, el video está buenísimo, muy buenos consejos.
This video gives me hope...so here im again ❤️
you have such a cool look and voice. great stage presence.
Your videos are inspiring me so much, learned so many things in such little time. Laura eres magnifica!
I travel a lot and take photos of everything 😂 They're actually quite good and I'm going to make a proper hobby of it. I'm so happy I've found your channel ❤
Thank you from an absolute beginner x
@LauraBC just starting to take photography seriously as a hobby and loved this video
Laura,
Your remarks are a spot on and great .
I'm strictly amateur and never new how important black and white pics are .
Keep doing a great job 👍
I am so glad I have come across your channel. Really needed to hear all that! You have inspired me to move on. I have been into photography for over a year❤
Que video más revelador. Muchas gracias!
De nada Sergio! 😊 Me alegro de que te haya gustado. ❤️
Muchísimas gracias 🙏🏾 Laura ! Greetings from Barcelona ❤
Oooh wauw. You have such a heartwarming personality. I just started out learning photography and editing with skillshare actually. Will definitely watch more content of you. 😊

You're welcome Luis! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you enjoy my channel! ❤️
In the course I have choosen we have a mix of elements 😊, which includes photography, I am going back to uni as I want to refresh my skills, but I need more in depth, I have experiment with different materials, as I run a balloon business and want to expand even more, only opened up a few months ago 😊
Love your channel so much! I've learned so much from you about how to start my business and now its happening! Thank you for being you!!
Thank you so much Hannah! 😍 This means a lot and it makes me so happy to know that my videos are helping you! ❤️ Big hug! :)
@@LauraBC Big hug right back!! Appreciate you!
you're right about studying at the University. I taught lighting to some students that had degrees in photography from college
Just found your channel. I love how inspiring you are ! This is exactly what i needed ty for sharing your gifts🙏
😍 Thank you so much! Happy you found my channel and you’re enjoying it while finding it inspiring. You’re most welcome. Good to have you here! 🥰📸
Your words are so heartwarming 🥰
100% agree. Practice your skills and keep a good notebook of what your settings were.
Digital allows you to have immediate feedback, but film photography requires patience and through thoughts.
I already subscribed to the channel, because I understand you so easy, as you speak English with a Spanish accent .
This solved so many of the questions I have been facing for months! Thank you so much, Laura! Lots of love♥
Are you trying to be a professional photographer too?
He hecho un stumble upon con tu canal y voy a hacer un instant subscribed! 👏🏼👏🏼
Hey! I really enjoy your content. I left the Caribbean and am now in Spain. Doing photography. I'm getting better daily. Keep up what you are doing.
Awww thank you so much! So nice to know that you’re getting better and better! Enjoy Spain! 😍❤️
I love your no BS approach.
Thank you for this video!! Appreciate the honesty!!!
Sooo complicated. Just start with a polaroid instamatic, they're fun and take great pics! 😄
nice explaination, I agree with you about autodidact to learn photography, teory is 40% and practice 60% and then practice, practice and practice.
can you do a video about the organization??
Excelente video, Laura! Saludos desde el Caribe… Gracias por tan valiosos consejos…
Muchas gracias! Me alegro un montón de que te haya gustado. Un abrazo gigante al Caribe! 🥰
So good explanations. I'm started lately and this was best teaching for me so far😀🤍. Thank you. Regards from Finland.
Hola guapa! I stumbled on your videos this morning and even though I’m not a beginner, I’m subscribing for your great energy and maybe I could learn one or two things. Also because I love your accent! 🤩🧡
Hola Laura! Your video is really helpful and has really good advice! I've been practising photography since 4 years ago but only with my analog camera. Right now I'm getting into digital photography to actually be able to practice as much as I want (specially since film rolls and developing films became really expensive in Chile) so yea, I agree totally: Commiting mistakes with analog photography IS really expensive haha
Saludos desde Santiago!
Invaluable tips! Thank you from this newbie!
Thank you for adding value to my life.
This was absolutely encouraging.
I needed this.
Thank you ❤❤❤
thank you so much your advice , i'm just excited with my new journey for being a new photographer
Thanks for all your tips. This was a good video for beginner photographers like myself.
You are the best one to give advice about starting photography! And appreciate it so much that you made this video 🥰 Thank you so much!
I have just started seriously at photography this year and it was always been my hobby to take photos of everything that attracts my eyes.
Will be looking forward to your next uploads 🙌
Love this style of video! Thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you! 🤩
