The Diesel is much better to live with... this is a heavy car, you need low down torque off idle, not high rpm power - 3rd/4th gear overtaking is so much better in the 30d
i think it’s absolutely beautiful how passing ppl at highway speeds comes with the purr of a b58 but wtv, and btw these cars aren’t heavy enough to justify a diesel and if bmw thought it was actually that good to live with i bet US would’ve gotten it too
Most modern Otto ICE are more of a combined cycle producing low end torque like a diesel. So yeah the B58 is a beast of an engine and better than the diesel in the 30d. The family 40i in town rarely goes above 2000 RPM, usually shifts around 1500 on easy drives and the car moves effortlessly. So your comment based on low end torque is mute. Also BMW underrated the B58 drastically. The B58 in the X5 most likely makes around 375 HP and not 335 HP (As dyno indicates in some of these cars with the same B58). The 40i is a sub 5 second to 60 when pushed and the perfect blend of reliability, speed, and fuel economy.

Kiplin Gordon - I think it’s the higher reving engine you hear, not the exhaust. I have the 40i, motor sounds great. I had the X3 with the 4 turbo, motor sounds busy, nothing like the 6.
They don’t say twin turbo. They feature ‘TwinPower’ technology, which is BMW language for twin-vein turbocharger. Essentially, there are two pipes on the compressor side, one small and one large. It is a single turbocharger though. Hope that makes sense.

If the X5 30d accelerates at 0.944g and the X5 40i accelerates at 0.896g, then how come the 40i does 0-100 in 5.5 seconds, faster than the 30d at 6.5 seconds for 0-100? Doesn't more g-force mean higher acceleration? If not, how is it possible for the 40i to accelerate with less g-force than the 30d, but still be faster than the 30d from 0-100? Does it have to do with the horsepower/torque curves of both cars?
G-force is more to do with how suddenly the car moves. In this case the 30d leaps off the line with its 620Nm of torque. The 40i's power and torque delivery is more linear and accelerates gradually. Not only that, the 30d is actually quicker off the line. According to the Vbox, at 0.35 seconds the 30d was doing 10.2km/h while the 40i was doing 9.7km/h. It's only when the 40i gets to around 20km/h that it overtakes. Hope this helps.

I will always prefer gas over diesel, with time the diesel engine get lazy comparing to the gas.
