    This game is one of my fondest memories of gaming with my mom. We sat there for my entire spring break week playing this game and my mom drew maps for every dungeon (which is really the only way to beat this game). I did eventually beat it after many hours. Once you get going and buy some upgrades the game gets a lot easier and way more fun. The beginning part is just hard as balls.

    "The game doesn't hold your hand very much" more like "the game drops you off at the bus station with a $1 pinned to your shirt and wishes you the best of luck"
    Great video, I spent countless hours playing this game in the late '80s. We spent days in the first dungeon because we didnt k ow what to do or where to go. It took us a few years to finally reach the flame

    When I was a kid, I lent "Deadly Towers" to a friend who lived on the opposite side of Fort Shafter. Within 2 hours, he returned the game. He was so disgusted with the game that he had no choice but to return it as soon as humanly possible, criss-crossing an Army base on bicycle. He never borrowed a game from me again.

    I owned this game as a child and I still have the game manual. No idea what I did with the game but at some point in middle school I traded it for a can of coke. Somehow I ended up getting back it back from the kid and then it ended up getting deodorant caked all over the game when it was in my book bag and somehow the deodorant opened. I played it because it was a big deal to get a $30-$50 NES game when you had no money. I'm pretty sure the game had some effect on my permanent effect on me psychologically.

    • @brenkrasmer
      @brenkrasmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not that the game is hard... That was standard for the time...
      The problem was, just how much the game withheld from the player. Giving you money that you can only spend in secluded areas within secluded areas accessible from one space within certain areas...
      Now, better execution would have turned bad outlook to great reputation. This is a game that was hurt by it's collision with technical limits.

  • @willmistretta

    I dunno. The core idea of the towers and such is fine. I can't justify the inclusion of these giant samey dungeons with invisible entrances that seem to serve no purpose other than to trap the player and pad out the game, though. That's unforgivable and wrecks the whole product for me.

    • @-Keith-
      @-Keith- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep in mind this was in an era where kids would make their own maps of game dungeons on pads of graphing paper. Exploration and mapping out the zones was as much a part of the game as progressing along the plot in those days (ultima: exodus comes to mind). And the dungeons actually had important weapon/armor/scroll/potion upgrades hidden in shops that helped you tremendously in the early to mid game.

    • @-Keith-
      @-Keith- 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@williswareinc That's just, like, your opinion man.
      I enjoyed it, I also had a stack of graphing paper beside my NES for games like Wizardry, Ultima, Faria, D&D, etc. because map making was a well established part of the old school RPG game experience. Not some "niche thing" as you put it. Young kids don't remember that part.

    Here's my thoughts...
    I liked Deadly Towers. The game world looks like Zelda meets Marble Madness. To me this looked like 3D Zelda which is awesome! The music is very unique and some of it is awesome. The 3D Gauntlet like gameplay actually had decent fun action with threats approaching from all directions.
    The monsters are pretty lame! The huge dungeons felt pointless, boring, and repetitive. Even back then when I wanted my expensive games to go on forever.
    I didn't understand the level of hate this game got even back in the old days before the internet. I thought people were just too lazy to play through a hard game. Deadly Towers is flawed, but it was very unique and good enough to make me dream about a sequel which would never come. :(

  • @WhyDidntIInventYT
    @WhyDidntIInventYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Deadly Towers is a good game with flaws: it's too cryptic, and you start out nerfed. with a few adjustments, it could be much better. I understand the logic of squeezing the most out of games back in the 80s, but they took it a bit too far. btw, 8:54 -- there's a spell or artifact that can freeze the sentinels so you can slip past them and take the shortcut.

  • @Allerdyne
    @Allerdyne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think you hit the nail on the head with a lot of this. In some ways, the game was really ahead of its time: non-linear structure, huge dungeons, and a clever way of using perspective to make it seem like the play mode of the game shifted throughout. But also lots of shoddy programming, like the bouncy-ball enemies, and a crippling, unpredictable knock-back mechanic. I loved the intro music of the game, too. Too bad most other tracks looped after about 12 seconds. I'd like to see re-make, too, maybe something with more interesting (even procedurally-generated?) dungeons.

    • @riskybitness
      @riskybitness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the bounders were just a way to do the best they could work what was available. This was early Nintendo and while now we know the console was capable of some surprising things, they hadn't been discovered yet. Sure, it is a lame enemy but because of the simple design it was possible to have more enemies onscreen at a time with quite a lot of animation. Of course the tradeoff for that was ridiculous amounts of sprite flicker.
      That knockback mechanic was absolute bullshit though, I can't argue that, especially the way it would often knock your from one enemy to the next, into another screen and another enemy.

    I do think this game gets an unfair share of hate, but there is one aspect that I find unforgivable. The dungeons aren't as large as you think, but they wrap around at all edges, meaning you could walk in a straight line (doors permitting) for forever until you start to notice a repeating pattern. This makes borders almost impossible to define and far too complex a task for 8 (or so) year old me to map out.

    I spent weeks drawing maps of the rooms and areas I traversed as a strategy to make some sense of this game. Days went by, and my maps didn't seem to connect up. No story guided me one way or another. No signage pointed to anything specific, just arbitrary room after room of arbitrary monsters, death, and starting from the beginning. Only to pull out my pages of shitty maps that, at the end of the day, just mirrored a shitty game. So you had a blast, that's amazing, you must be a genius. For the rest of us, it was a terrible disappointment, loaded with potential let to utter misery and promises unkept.

    I grew up in the 1990s, when people were selling their old NES for a SNES. At some point I had a NES and a box of used games and this was one of them. Deadly towers failed on 2 levels. If I wanted to play a fantasy world game, the original Legend of Zelda was the better choice. If I wanted a fun game, then by far Castlevania was the superior choice. I could even add that the graphics and music for Deadly towers was inferior to Castlevania and Legend of Zelda.
    Take the Dradon Warrior series for example. While I never beat a dragon warrior game, and it was never my favorite, I kept going back to it. There was something about Dragon Warrior that kept me interested. I think it was because the game play was decent, but there was enough "open world" to keep me interested.
    ask yourself this, why were the Final Fantasy games a hit? Was it because it used the same old template of turned based RPG that had been done many times before? No, I think it was a combination of the plot and world building. The player was invested in the characters and plot of the game. Final Fantasy was world that opened up after you discover the air ship. Would you ever want an air ship in Deadly Towers, would you even want to see more of that ugly deadly towers world?

    Pull the other one man. Just because they did not know any better does not mean they did not make bad decisions. Those bad decisions led to making a bad game.
    Making a game too hard because its too short makes it a bad game.
    The way you suggest making it more playable is to play cheaply. (A game should not require using turbo, if that's what it needs why not just make the sword auto fire, or up the damn damage?!)
    Just because you can wring enjoyment out of something does not mean its "good".

    I finally found some of my data that is NOT on the game wiki walkthroughs: I need to recheck my data but for bosses here's the average puny short sword hits it takes to kill a boss: Cold killer - 32, Death Bear - 32, Great Wing - 33-34, Centipede - 30, Wheeler - 32, Beat Plant - 33, Great Burn - 33, Rubas form 1 - 122? (22 splendor) , Rubas form 2 - 192? (30 splendor), Rubas Form 3 - 224? (38 splendor) Its a rough guess and I should reverify that again and with different weapons. The gloves seem to help and sometimes I thing Double shot oomphs the power up (don't use parallel).

    • @BaneMcDeath
      @BaneMcDeath 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other monsters are easy enough to find. I should make a spreadsheet. I forgot to gauge humanoid damage from shooting head only and body only. There might be a weakness to some mobs. To my knowledge, humanoids are the only one's divided like that (unless centipede and part of rubas is like that. I don't think the bounders and fires the bosses have are separate from their bodies.. cold killer, etc.

    • @BaneMcDeath
      @BaneMcDeath 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Guardian Gatekeepers can be passed if you manage to find the shop that has the key to buy in the dungeons. TBH, I can't recall if the key appears after burning 3 bells or before. You'd think the bounder was a slime like race but it says "unknown" so maybe its fungi or something. I'd laugh if it was the rubber ball race. QOL would be the ability to stab with your sword while the flying blade is flying off screen. Yeah, an autofire controller really devastates mobs. If you're pretty good on your shots then parallel is great and it definitely is a great tool on Rubas in the end rather than double shot.

    Thank you! I have been saying this for years.
    I'd love to see someone make an improvement patch or redux version of the game someday, maybe even a randomizer.

    • @Ballowax
      @Ballowax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@riskybitness first you're soundmixing. The music is too loud. Second your voice, you sound kind a glitchy, loke this a zoom call or something. Mabey the bitrate for the mic audio is too low and uh that's it. You rock at everything else

    Awesome video dude but god damn, the volume levels at the beginning about destroyed my ears haha And you didn't really say why it was a good game, this was more of just a review of the game. In fact, at the end, you gave reasons why it sucks, not why it's good. I only bring it up because I was waiting to see why you think it's good when in truth, this game is absolute garbage! And I can give you plenty of reasons why haha

    My brother and I owned this as kids. I can't tell you how much time we put into it and from what I remember just couldn't make any real headway. There aren't many games from my past that I struggled with and really felt the need to go back to as an adult, but this is definitely one. This video just kinda lit the fire under my butt to do it, thank you!

      That's great! I'm glad I reminded you about it. It seems like everyone used to play this with an older sibling. I have great memories of it!
