  • On the NES, nothing packs quite as much RPG variety into one experience as The Magic of Scheherazade does. Combining turn-based and action RPG battling with some neat story mechanics, it's really unlike anything else on the system. Definitely pick this one up! 🍖

    Just a hint: IF the game crashes or the power goes out or something and you don't have a password in the chapter you were in, you can always go to the password screen and type W# (replace # with 2, 3, 4 or 5) to start on that world. The game will reject that password 3 times, but then it will allow you to start on that world (w4 starts on World 4, for example)
    It is a shame that this game didn't use a save backup.
    Then again, games with save backups were almost nonexistent here in Brazil, so if this game had it, I would probably not have played it when I was a kid. And THIS would be a shame, considering how important this game was for me.

      Thank you for sharing this! I know the manual mentioned something about password sorcery that wasn't totally clear to me, so it's great to know how it actually works. I hope you don't mind that I pinned your comment. This info will probably help someone out!

    • @chronossage
      @chronossage 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Bonus detail. This is actually because the game is coded with wrong password forgiveness feature. Every password the game gives you starts with w# and this was coded in incase you wrote/entered your long password down wrong. If your password doesn't work the game just checks the first two characters (always w#) and ignores the rest. It also why every world has a max level, so the game knows what you should have at the start and end of each world. The max level for each world code in just flipping the w# around so its #w.

    This was my family's favorite game when I was in kindergarten. It was the first one I ever saw anyone beat; I was so excited when my mother finished it that I got my toy guitar and sang a song about it. Oddly, she almost never played videogames after that, and I still can't get her to pick them up again to this day. She always says she's afraid she'd sink into them and do nothing else.
    I never beat it until I started returning to my digital heritage with emulators as an adult. I was surprised by how easy it was compared to other games like it, (except for some of the bosses) and I realized how lucky I was to have this as a first game. The experience is so different when you've built up some literacy; a beginner sees a huge world and a variety of systems to explore, while a veteran sees quirky design choices and ways to break the game everywhere. Both perspectives are rewarding in their own way, and I'm sure this game has shown both sides to lots of people. I was particularly fascinated with the formations as a child, and while they can still be very powerful against certain encounters, it's funny to see how underwhelming some of them are once you know what you're doing.
    This game is an absolute gem, and I've spent an embarrassing amount of time imagining a modern remake of it. It's kind of obscure, so it'll probably never happen, but I thought that about ActRaiser, and we have that now. Maybe someday.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think it's awesome that you have that memory from your mom's playthrough. It's unfortunate that she fell of the gaming bandwagon, but it's nice to know that you got to spend that time together when you were younger, and that it fostered the growth of something so important in you.
      I feel like coming back to a childhood game in adulthood is incredibly satisfying. I never managed to finish most of my childhood games without a Game Genie, and I only beat them legitimately after I turned 30. I wish I'd had The Magic of Scheherazade as a kid because I think I would've adored learning about the turn-based RPG stuff. I didn't really play a game like that until I was a teenager, and this feels like the perfect introduction to something like that.
      Thank you for sharing your experiences and memories with me here. And I will add my hope to yours for a remake someday.

    I am so happy you got to this gem. I played a lot of this as a kid and then as a young adult, and I loved it. It's such a unique and wonderful game, despite it's flaws.
    I remember looking it up on youtube, and the only video I could see showcasing it's gameplay was a pair of dudebros playing the first 20 minutes and making fun of it, followed by throwing it in the trash; I guess they were trying to be the next AVGN. It saddened me and I'm glad someone finally gave the recognition it deserves.
    I remember renting it as a kid and getting to Curly, the second chapter boss, only to get completely stumped at how you are supposed to beat him. Simply put, the fight gets to a place where Curly just disappears and there's nothing you can do. I tried everything before I just assumed my cartridge was somehow broken and the game locked up or something, or maybe I might have missed something that you are supposed to use to make Curly vulnerable again. Sadly, no. I remember replaying chapter 2 over a few times and always getting stuck at the same point during the boss fight.
    Then when I played again years later as an adult, I learned what you were actually supposed to do. You knew a spell that would hit all enemies on the screen, and you were just supposed to use that several times.... that's it. I remember using it once or twice when I was 'trying everything' but I remember there being no significant feedback that what you were doing is the right thing. But if you use it like I think 5 times, you damage Curly enough that the fight proceeds.

      Sometimes when I'm trying to decide what game to review, I'll have a look and see what's been covered already, and I was shocked that there were only a couple of videos about this game. I'm really glad to put something a little more in depth out there for folks to make a decision about whether or not they might like to play this for themselves.
      I can totally understand how you might've gotten off track with boss strategies as a kid. I alluded to it in the review, but even as a proper adult and paying attention to NPCs and taking notes, I still feel like I didn't quite have all the information I needed sometimes. I wonder if some of it was lost in translation at some point or if they just wanted you to experiment, but either way, I felt the bosses were unique if not sometimes frustrating. I'm glad you eventually got through the Curly fight!

    Fascinating game. Seeing that it's still a fairly early Famicom/NES game, it's really forward-looking. Another thing is, Culture Brain mostly focused on Hiryuu no Ken and Super Chinese series; many games from those series didn't come out in the West... and frankly, The Magic of Scheherazade was their magnum opus in my opinion; they really got it right early on. They also had some other series, like Hamster Monogatari and Konchuu Monsters... but I can't say much about those, since I haven't really played them much at all. This game is one of the very first console RPGs. It predates even Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star by a few months, and Megami Tensei by about a week. As far as I can tell, only Dragon Quest 1&2 predate it (and technically Dragon Stomper, but that's a whole different kettle of fish). Magic of Scherherazade was way ahead of its time, with character portraits, a specific main character with a personal goal, and some innovative plot ideas.
    It's strange that a sequel was never made. It could have become a foundational series as important to the industry as the other games I listed. But instead, it just sort of vanished into obscurity. It's such a weird little nugget of history.

    Culture Brain always made wildly ambitious games that usually didn't pan out all that well; this felt like the one time they actually succeeded. This is one of my all-time favorites on the NES, but it did take me 3 or 4 tries to like it enough to even finish the first chapter; the turn-based battles were a big part of that, but after spending enough time with it, I really wound up enjoying the experience. I have a soft spot for Magic. Back in the day, it felt very unique and mysterious. Like, there was a formula to how it played but I'd still find myself surprised how it go about it. I love all the weird companions and they're really imaginative, although i also wish some of them were more outwardly useful or conversational beyond Coronya, who was basically a narrative side kick even when not used.
    I'd love to see this game updated for the modern era, there really isn't much like it and it has a lot of interesting ideas that just needed polish.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed 100%! There's so much awesome stuff here that just needed a little more refinement to make this even better. Here's hoping it'll get the remake/reboot treatment sometime. It'd be a perfect game to update, but still maintain lots of the original aspects since they're already so well-developed.

    Omg. So happy you reviewed this one. I know I missed out on the twitch stream. This is really a unique game. The music is top notch too. I always thought the two different fighting elements were neat and the class changes too were huge factors in how well you’d make progress.

      I definitely agree: there's tons here to experiment with and figure out a best way to play for your own play style. I wish I'd started up with the magician class a bit earlier, but I was content with the fighter's projectile for a long time. I didn't know what I was missing!

    I was really happy to see this title pop up here, I have always had the softest of soft spots for this weird little game. I rented it when it was new, after Ultima Exodus and Dragon Warrior this was one of the very first turn-based RPGs we NES kids got. So even if the gameplay hybrid didn't quite make sense, it was still cool uncharted territory at the time. And everything about Culture Brain, from their weird name to the semi-amateurish sprite work (the portraits here are good though) in a lot of their games to the garbled English in their print ads shouted underdog. I found it easy to be sympathetic toward them, even if their output wasn't always great.

      I actually really enjoy that it's a hybrid game! It's certainly different from anything else I've played and I appreciated the change from the usual fare. I'll have to have a look at some of their ads. I don't think I've had the pleasure of seeing how those came across.

    It's nice to have a game that does things a bit differently from other RPGs, with its two distinct forms of combat, but perhaps there is a reason why more games of this style did not follow Scheherazade's lead. But I applaud the designers for not simply following the standard formula.
    And I agree wholeheartedly about the 'secrets' being pointed out for you. Hearing the famous jingle in the Legend of Zelda when I pushed the correct stone, bombed the right bit of wall or burnt the appropriate bush to reveal a secret entrance was one of the most tingly satisfying moments in video gaming for me!

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was really blown away at how much they put into one game. It all worked well but maybe could've used a little more polish to get it to be truly amazing. It's still fun for what it is though, without question!
      Coronya is a menace! I wish I had a little more autonomy over the secret-finding. Growing up, Zelda's secret discoveries were so exciting for me. This definitely didn't feel nearly as fun as that did. I'm glad we're in agreement on that!

    I remember this game from my youth. Looking back, it seems like it was really ambitious. Lots of its features would become mainstays in generations, like character portraits, class swapping, turn-based and overworld combat, and party swapping.
    Mind you, A LOT of these features were implemented a bit... poorly. But I attribute that more towards it being overly ambitious and the restrictions of technology at the time.

      The Rupia tree was the only thing, sadly. In fact, you hit the nail in the head in your review: the time travel thing was a missed opportunity. In fact, they aren't even important to the game! The action combat was great, but not being able to use your partners is another missed opportunity. And so on.
      I still love the game, but it is FAR from perfect. :p

      @@marcsm2008 I hope that you get to play Faxanadu sometime. I'll add to the collective voice that insists you need to try it out.
      I totally hear ya about missed opportunities being abundant here. The Magic of Scheherazade is still incredibly ambitious and fun, but with just a little bit more work in a few areas to make things more impactful, it could've been even better. I still loved it regardless!

    That level cap feature actually sounds really good. I can see how that can get the player to just keep moving on, while maintaining a floor of difficulty. Surprising that this didn’t really take off with RPGs as a whole. The closest thing that I can think of in modern games is the Bethesda approach where the enemies scale with your level, but this is still a little different. Fascinating, I’ll have to check this one out. Thanks for the time and effort spent on bringing this title back up to light.

      It's a bit confusing in the typical NES fashion that games were back then. You might need a walkthrough to get past some of the more insane parts but overall it's a pretty fun game.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely an interesting take on RPGs and I just had to play it when I saw how different it was from everything else out there. The only other game I've played like this with a level cap is Illusion of Gaia, though that's a bit of a different setup since it's purely an action RPG.
      Enjoy this one if you play it! It has a few sticking points that might require some inventive approaches, but it's definitely worth spending some time on.
      Also, you're very welcome! I appreciate you stopping by!

    I picked this up at a flea market many years ago and playing through it was one of my best gaming experiences. The soundtrack is one of the best on the system, maybe a top 20 for the NES.

      @@hungrygoriya No more than five bucks. Probably around 2009, I bought that a bunch of other okay to unspectacular games. Thank god I bought a lot of it when it was still cheap. 😂

    One of my favorite hidden gems from the NES! It was ahead of it's time in so many ways, classes, casinos, companions, time travel, two different battle systems, colleges to teach you tactics, and so on. It isn't without it's flaws (password system) but for it's age, it is an amazing game.

    I regret not hearing about this game till long after my nes days. I would have loved it. Didn’t know it was a turn based rpg too… wow. For another action rpg and turn based rpg combined, also check Little Ninja Brothers. I loved that game as a kid and when it suddenly threw in turn based rpg I was totally impressed.
