In my opinion this is a great album - but flawed. Like Sandinista it needs to be cut back by 25-35%. Richie I agree with most of your, but I love it. Belongs in your Top 20. I think of the word angular, rhythmic, cutting. I hear Gang of Four’s “Entertainment” and Mission of Burma. Thanks for reviewing.

Hey MR. RiChiE! Love your channel. There is a single sided Promo of Double Nickels that highlights the best of this record. It is hard to find but i did find a copy back in the 90s at a record show in Columbus Ohio were i am from. It is called Wheels of Fortune. One sided record with etched side B. But anywho it does a amazing job at hitting the best songs from the L.P. worth looking for as it is a better listen. Cheers Sir!
There is a documentary on the Minutemen you might like it’s called “We Jam Econo.” It goes way into this record and how it was made , it was a response to Hüsker Du Zen Arcade. I freaking love the minutemen, they have other records you’d probably like better
That’s why on the inner liner notes of the lp it says “Take that Huskers!”. Because Zen Arcade was the only other double album SST put out. Not only is the music genius, but the artwork is superb. Raymond Pettibon was a genius artist.
Had to adjust to that guy driving on the wrong side of the car. It endangers the whole Road Safety Dance. That album cover puts us in the back seat, and you were doing some backseat driving there, V-R. Now, mine was the 33rd Like. Some ppl get crucified at that time of life but I was doing the Resurrection Shuffle. A late bloomer, I finally went to college, and due to a weird aptitude for computer programming at a time when the masses were just starting to own home pcs, I was teaching the subject a year later. That wasn't the half of it. Like some jellyfish monster in a Quatermass script my brain was expanding across 4 different universities at the same time without any of the universities realising I was oversubscribed, making up for lost time in 5 fields, all the way to PhD at 50. Truth is I was already self-taught across the board as a teen, that was the main thing. Now I've long forgotten everything I knew about programming and today's whizzkids leave me standing in the dust. So now here I am taking notes watching Prof Vinyl Richie do his weekly seminar for the postgrads of VC University. So next you;re doing double albums, V-R? Will this include Beatles red & blue? - - because those were my first Beatles albums. If I hit the 19th Like on the next vid I can tell you all about it. The tension is unbearable.
Rich you got this one right imo! This double album has so many highs and lows, it’s a literal roller coaster. 2 sides and it would be a classic. As it is for fans of the genre, get a reissue cause that mofo OG is expensive. Cheers dude

@@vinylrichie007 Ritchie, if I was intelligent then I wouldn’t spend my Sundays waving Human League albums in front of my IPhone while talking cobblers! 😅
I enjoyed your deep dive of this album Rich. For me, this album is definitely at least half filler material. To be honest I loved the minutemen but only in small doses. The ep was the best format for them. The JOY ep is stellar. The PARANOID TIME ep is genus. The BEAN SPILL ep is killer. I find their lps to be too long. Even the first two where tracks sound similar. However they were unlike other hardcore bands. Like a combination of WIRE and GANG OF FOUR. There will never be another band like this. Even firehose sounded different. The CD version excludes 3 tracks. RIP d.
I think they were making an antidote to the type of music that they themselves were fans of in the 70s. No 10-minute power ballads. No effort to make lyrics rhyme. It's not the composed structure of most commercial albums of the time and was more cut-and-paste; kind of like a collection of sketches in a notebook more than a refined masterwork (e.g, Dark Side of the Moon, etc.). Like Saccharine Trust, they were pushing a much more art-punk perspective, rather than the hardcore that was brewing at the time. It makes for a hodge-podge of an album, but really great stuff in the end.
After listening to it again. The funky songs, the music sounds like a really raw Red Hot Chili Peppers and the vocals sound like a really raw, unpolished and angry David Byrne type. Maybe it's just sometimes the phrasing reminds me of Talking Heads. Their sound changes from song to song on side 3 and 4. The bass lines aren't as funky on some songs and it's more straightforward.
'Our albums are like rivers' said Mike Watt once. So this is not so much a collection of individual songs, hits even. Maybe you should dive some more and start learning to swim like I did numerous times. I 'd take this (with all it's flaws or maybe because of it) to a desert island. Oh and there's a great 33/3 book out there which offers a very deep dive into it.
I’ve listened to the album quite a few times but this was the first time I got through the whole thing in one sitting. I saw the Minutemen live twice. My desert island 2LP warts and all is the Beatles White album.
I have an original pressing also and I hardly ever play this album. It’s been compared to Arcade Zen by Husker Du but I think Arcade is a much better album.
I like a lot of the songs that you are calling throwaways. That's your opinion. I like how the whole album falls together. I even like the Van Halen and Steely Dan homage. Sadly, the version of "Little Man With A Gun In His Hand" is weaker than the one on Buzz Or Howl... which rocks like a sunovabitch. "History Lesson, Pt. 2" is a tear-jerker in this reporter's opinion. If you hear this album, only the vinyl version has the correct presentation, plus lock grooves(on sides 3 & 4)!
