Definitely a different take on a playthrough fitting of this series. It's like we're being told a story as opposed to being subjected to the mindless chatter and childish screaming that usually accompanies other TH-camrs' playthroughs/Let's Plays. Vaati actually seems to care more about the game and lore rather than getting audience reactions to his overreactions.
Recently when i tried to continue playing my character, the game said something like ''the latest files is corrupted, delete them to continue'' so i did. My whole save is now removed, but is there anything i can do to restore it?
Now that you officially know the context of what an Unkindled is... It's really sad. Damn Miyazaki. To reach the Kiln and attempt the linking of the Flame, only to be incompatible and burn to ash in the process... That's rough man. Hawkwood's opening dialogue with your character makes even more sense in this context now. "Can't even die right..."
Yeah...thinking about all the shit that you put your character through to get there and to link the flame. To be the one to get all the way down there, went through all of that only to have the Kiln reject your ember. It's a giant middle finger, "Nope sorry you're not the chosen one...fuck you." annnnnd then after being put through that, the person who already was rejected from kindling the flame the first go around, is brought back to life and basically told, "Well it turns out we need you anyways....so you get to do it all over again and hope it doesn't reject you this go around." That's just a soul crushing dauntless task if you ask me. No wonder so many refused to do it. Turned away from purpose and went hollow or killed themselves. I don't blame them whatsoever....and with that in mind, my dude is a mad man for wanting to do it all over again.
@@StudlyFudd13 Well, the Flame didn't really reject you. That's not really how it works. The reason you don't become a Lord of Cinder is because you are not strong enough and burn too fast. And so you turn to Ash. And you don't necessarily remember the previous cycle exactly. You may have a general memory, but the "Champion" memories are kinda erased. At least that's the case with us, the MC. Like... The MC doesn't really have a personality and doesn't talk. Like...The only reason why we're so obscure may be either because the flame erases the memory of the Champion cycle, or because our case is special and there is some other reason for not having a backstory, maybe it was cut out for the sake the RPG character diversity.
The best theory about the Abyss Watchers' infighting that I've heard is that some of them became infected by The Abyss after fighting with it for so long, and so every time those infected watchers are revived, the others will kill them instantly to keep The Abyss from spreading. I think most people got this idea because some of them have red, glowing eyes and others don't.
Yeah, monsters with red eyes tend to be affected by the abyss that turns people into black goop monsters. The abyss watchers with red eyes attack the other abyss watchers while the still sane ones are trying to attack you
not just some members of legion but all that goat demon hybrid type creatures protecting watchers from intruders which video is saying was acolytes of legion look exactly like abyss infected natives in city of oolacile so it makes sense that both region and legion is infected
I always underestimate how long these Lorethrough videos take to make. If this one doesn't get a great response, I miiiight come back to them later. I'll be honest - they're tiring to work on because it's like writing an essay instead of a short story, if that makes sense. The videos I like to watch are succinct, entertaining, and don't waste your time..but with Lorethrough I go in-depth on EVERY aspect of an area - whether it's entertaining or not. As a result, they're a bit more.."soulless" than something like "lore: explained" or "prepare to cry". However - they bring out just how much detail there is in the game..and they're a documentation of the huuuuge notes document I have on every item description / area of the game, so I also think they're important to make! So if I do take a break with these - I think i'll come back to them after I have all the really entertaining videos done. Feedback appreciated, as usual. About the Abyss Watcher that "helps" you in the fight: he has red eyes. My theory is that he's been consumed by the abyss, and the other watchers are fighting him to stop the spread of the contamination. Once you beat the first phase all of the blood is absorbed by one of the watcher, and in the cutscene you see him assuming a sort of "wild" pose, in contrast with the respectful and dignified pose with which you are greeted at the beggining of the fight. This might suggest that the abyss is finally taking over.
Why did you stop doing this Lore Through series? I would love to see you pick up where this video leaves off and continue through the rest of the game explaining the Lore.
He explains this at the end of the episode, the lorethrough series became other videos like Lore of the Bosses, Soulssong, and the more in-depth character series Prepare-to-Cry. As for the exact why I'm not sure, as I enjoyed the walkthrough style of these videos as well, but Vaati always enjoyed looking at the story as a whole in his videos instead of this piece-by-piece fashion so I'm sure that has something to do with it. He covered the abyss in other videos like he promised he would at the end of this video, on top of the fact that everything that could be covered in the next part of this series has been covered to death by both him and other channels so he probably saw the lorethrough series as a waste of time. Not my opinion, but my best educated guess as I would love to see him return to this.
It is a shame, he did these videos nearly blind as he had an early access copy of the game due to the success of the channel. I try to watch his videos and learn as much about the game as possible, but every time I play through the game I forget bits and pieces and the true lore of the world sometimes goes right over my head. It would be fascinating to see Vaati do the walkthrough now given all that we have learned about the game up to this point in time. But alas, I'm sure he has other projects he is devoting his time to, so this probably won't happen.
I report a Theory from SabakuNoMaiku. The Abysswatchers are attacking some of them because the ones whit red eyes are corrupted by the abyss. You can see that the ones whit normal eyes don't attack the boss, only the red eyed ones do
Dunno if Vaati actually reads the comments, but here's what I think is going on: The Profaned Capital was hit hard with the Abyss, so much so that Wolnir and Yhorm seem consumed by it. The Profaned capital is one of the only things we see utterly buried. My theory is that the Abyss Watchers buried the profaned capital for it's connection to the Abyss, and ended up finding it again in the Catacombs of Carthus. They sealed the catacombs but due to exposure the 3rd Watcher became corrupted by the Abyss and led to the in-fighting. Hence why they guard the only entrance to the Catacombs and Irithyll that we know about.

+VaatiVidya When you make the lore video involving eyes of a firekeeper or whatever, look at the opening cinematic when the firekeeper puts on the visor. You can see the inside and it looks to be the reason the fire keeper sees stuff like a world without fire and all that stuff when you give her eyes.
"Every Lord of Cinder has a second phase where they become imbued with flame..." 13:58 All of them do... except High Lord Wolnir. I think that's worth looking into.
Finally, Vaati makes a lore vid. I've been seeing them everywhere on TH-cam but I don't plan on watching anyone else's videos.... These ones are just better.

yo vaati I thanks for video! I think the reason they fight each other is because some of abyss watchers get consumed by the abyss the way artorias was. Then they start to attack everyone they see, as you said, and the other ones try to kill them to contain the spread
The editing in these videos are so amazing. The way you fit the voices of npc's to link it to what the npc may be talking about or to make their words have more weight is really smart and awesome.
So I was making an Artorias build and I thought to myself, "doesn't his Greatsword have a sort of boosted effect against a certain type of enemies?" I went online and checked that it deals more damage against "*Abyssal foes*". "Just what the hell are abyssal foes?"- I thought. One thing that i read about in a forum is how apparently those are the ones that have glowing red eyes. And later on in the forum a guy mentioned one of the most interesting things: Within the Abyss Watchers fight, there will be a crazied Abyss Watcher who will fight against the others. That one has red eyes. It is an *Abyssal Abyss Watcher*. Maybe the reason that they went mad is because they all share the same blood of the wolf and by having it tainted by the Abyss, they started to hunt themselves, that's what we find when we go inside their arena, an Abyss Watcher just slayed his corrupted companion, but as they share the same soul, so long as one of them stands they'll keep coming back. But why are they guarding that place in specific? Well, because Wolnir, the giant skeleton, *IS* also an Abyssal enemy, who was corrupted himself by the Abyss. I am wondering however, and this is the important bit: What shape does the abyss take in this game? how does it appear? As a side note, have you noticed how the Sword of Avowal, and the Crucifixes of Crucifixion Woods are extremely similar? And they all also resemble the Blade of the Darkmoon? And that we sacrifice that "one person" with the Sword of Avowal in a very special place that concerns the Blades of the Darkmoon? And to top it all off, what are the Jailers in Irythil Dungeon wielding? A Soldering Iron with the a symbol of the crucifixes. Just food for thought. :p
At 4:39, The clip from when you where playing with Criken during his Edward Emberpants series stole the mood of the video. The seriousness of the Dark Souls videos you post we instantly taken when I just thought of Criken's voice asking what everything is and then you and Bedbananas trying to find where he ran off to.
Great video, Vaati! Small thing: I think the Abyss Watchers are fighting themselves because they're contaminated by the Abyss. The Catacombs of Carthus, which are connected to the room where you fight them, are contaminated, their ruler residing in the Abyss itself and the Grave Wardens developing Dark Pyromancies. I believe this is why the Watchers were in this particular room in the first place: so they could fight the Abyss back should the Catacombs begin to "leak." Now let's just take a brief moment to touch on the significance of glowing red eyes in relation to the Abyss. The gooey Abyss Monsters that burst out of I. Gundyr and various hollows have red eyes, Bloatheads had red eyes, manus had red eyes, hell, Darkwraithes, who are born of the Dark, use RED EYE Orbs to invade. Now let's look at the Watcher that is hostile to the others. What unique characteristic does go possess? Glowing Red Eyes. Of course that's just a theory, but it's the most likely reason I can come up with.
It's interesting to note that the only Abyss Watchers who turn on the other ones have glowing red eyes. It's possible that the Watchers are trying tirelessly to purge their ranks of Abyssal corruption. Given the pile of bodies littering the boss chamber, it's pretty clear how well that's going.

Wow, I can't believe how From manages to sneak so much lore in the game while saying as little as possible. All the lore is there, you just have to be really perceptive and it all clicks together perfectly. I love how the community is figuring out the fine points in a team effort.
The undead legion is not just killing eachother randomly, they are killing eachother because some of them become corrupted by the abyss, and you can see that because they got red eyes.
It is my belief that the reason the Abyss Watchers are fighting each-other is something else entirely. Through-out the Souls games we have seen that the insane and/or the hollowed will continue to follow some patterns. Knights will still guard areas, hollowed sorcerers still cast spells, and so on. So what are the Abyss Watchers doing? Well, the Abyss Watcher duty was to cull all signs of the abyss and it's afflictions upon the world with extreme prejudice. But, having become a Lord of Cinder and hollowed, it is arguable that each Abyss Watcher would rise from death, turn to see another Abyss Watcher (now corrupt, hollowed) and carry on the duty that carried them in life. In a way, it seems as if the Abyss Watchers are continuing to perform their duty eternally upon each-other, each of them ignorant of their own state, as is tell-tale of both hollowing and corruption in most cases. Would also explain the desertion of those who had not yet partaken of the Wolf's Blood, as well as the Abyss Watchers ceasing to leave the realm to hunt for signs of the Abyss, as they were constantly turning and finding the Abyss right beside them, essentially locking them into place. The 'Final Reward' for Lordship, as Hawkwood puts it, would be the player character putting an end to this other-wise endless cycle, and allowing the tired and well-respected souls of the Abyss Watchers to finally have rest. This would, too, make sense as to why Hawkwood questions why this is to be their final reward, as everyone will one day receive this reward; therefor, what true reward awaits you for the sacrificial act of linking the flame? If followed from this logic, it even fortifies why Hawkwood left, why he stayed away, and a good portion of why he is so crestfallen. If this is all true, in a way, his shield (which set him apart and shamed him amidst the group he aspired to become a member of), shielded him from the same fate. Just my theory, but I rather like it.
+NeverSolus My own theory on the last Abyss watchers, this maybe a weak theory but, a theory none the less. The abyss watcher you fight first in the room, my understanding is that he is still sane and the fighting we hear outside, is him killing off the undead time after time. You walk in and he turns to attack you, as you risk unleashing the abyss, thats when all the other watchers rise up and attack you, except others rise up still insane, but go after the first watcher, thinking he will unleash the abyss. A endless cycle. It's not the best of theory's but, its one I rather like.
Please dont stop making videos. If it's not too difficult I'd love this series to continue similar to how you had a playthrough of Dark Souls 2 focused on the lore and the world, and I think other people would love that too.
+Xerxes Break I don't see why it necessarily is related to the painted world beyond the way in which Anor Londo was already related to the it; Anor Londo in the first game was in a valley not dissimilar from where it's situated in 3, the massive walls and the fact that the buildings are insanely tall gave the impression you were up in the mountains, but that's actually not the case. More to the point, had a city below the massive cathedral area we explore that we never got to visit, in my opinion, we finally got to do that. Hell, we might have already done that if you buy into the theory that Elleum Loyce was on the same site as Anor Londo.
Xerxes Break It's visually not the same doll as the one found in the first game. Perhaps its the same sort of magic that made the painted world sealed by the doll, which seems to be supported by the fact that Aldritch apparently had some dreams about Priscilla (or Yorksha) while eating Gwyndilon.
Xerxes Break Also, there's the implication from the corvian monsters you fight along the road of sacrifices that things ended up escaping from the painting world. Possibly up to and including Priscilla.

VaatiVidya, I have a question for you. Had anyone mentioned the depictions/hieroglyphics found in front of the three fires you put out before unlocking the door to the Farron Keep? I haven't heard anyone finding it yet (and I haven't checked dswiki), but these depictions are the great souls who ushered in the Age of Fire. One fire is represented by a giant amalgamation of skeletons (Gravelord Nito). Another fire is of a woman with smaller figures with staffs below her (The Witch of Izalith and her daughters of Chaos). And the last fire depicts four figures (Perhaps Gwyn and his royal family; I doubt it's the four kings, because these three flames represent the three founders of the Age of Fire) If the four figures do represent Gwyn and his kin, then they could be him, Gwynevere, the Nameless King, and a mother who had never been mentioned before (Gwyndolin wouldn't be among them since his existence was kept a secret). Where the fire is placed within these altars imply the figures wielded the first flame I noticed it today and my mind was blown, but this was something of a small detail that I enjoyed finding. I don't know if you noticed though.

+Gunawan Wibisono There are always three: Their leader, the "real" boss, then a normal one fighting alongside the leader and a red-eyed one that will attack the other watchers but can also fight against you. For this theory I'd say the red-eyed one is corrupted, since red eyes were always considered to be a sign of some kind of corruption.

I believe they are fighting because they are being corrupted by the abyss, after all the boss doesn't fight every Abysswatcher rising, just the ones with red eyes, so there's something about them, and thinking about what was their duty the red eyes being a symbol for the abyss seems quite a reasonable thesis.
And red eyed enemies in the game are usually also coupled with darker clothing and stronger attacks, just to add onto the abyss theory. Imagine waking up from your grave and fighting members of your own group, your friends, who have been corrupted by the very thing you spent your life fighting. And they just don't stay dead. Meanwhile your wolf's blood, the source of your strength, is dwindling. It'd be enough to drive you mad.
I believe that the reason why the Abyss Watchers are caught killing each other when you meet them could be directly linked to their purpose and fate. One thing that every enemy in the souls series has in common is that no matter how withered they became or how insane they turned out to be, they always established a presence towards the player which showcased who they were. This is evident in how you fight a variety of hollows in lothric castle who, although have lost themselves, still retain some skills related to the occupation they had, (ie crossbow hollows actually know how to reload a crossbow, shielded hollows keep their shield up and attack with spears, and the knights fight with discipline) As for the Abyss Watchers, you have to keep in mind that they were completely and unrelentingly dedicated to keeping the abyss from spreading in any way, shape and form, even going as far as to end entire kingdoms to do so. Now one thing to keep in mind is their location, which happens to be right next to the carthus ruins which is a place that had been heavily influenced by the abyss that is described as "the deep" in the game. The deep (AKA the abyss) is described as something that was once a pure entity that would end up becoming the resting grounds of demons and monsters. It is also described as an entity that isnt malevolent but happens to corrupt by just being present. Think about it, the carthus kingdom which would be corrupted by the deep, which is an entity that corrupts just by being there, would be watched eternally by the watchdogs of farron, who happened to be in the presence of the deep. You see what may have happened? The watchdogs suffered the same fate as the cathedral of the deep, and being that they were dedicated to eradicating any evidence of the abyss, they would tear each other apart in order to prevent the spread, as was their duty. They would continue to do this, even as they locked themselves away in order to contain the legion. Even after they themselves had withered away, becoming a hollow husk of their former selves, they would still perform their duties as it is the legacy that they left behind for themselves, and they would tear each other up, over and over and over again until you, the player, come to end their suffering.
VaatiVidya I'm just assuming it did the better quality encoding first because it took longer and it wouldn't take as long to put out 480p and below. It's already there as of this comment and it seems like in this same time frame it takes longer to get 720p @ 60fps and higher encoded.

I think that the non-red eyed Watchers are fairly sane (as they don't fight each other) but the red-eyed watchers have hollowed. Perhaps after burning in the kiln, they aren't in a rush to get back, even sane, and just want to be laid to rest where they feel they belong.
The feels... Oolacile is one of my favorite places in Dark Souls, the atmosphere, the battles, shadows creeping everywhere. The echoing screams. Can't remember what video I saw it on but there impression was the abyss watchers are killing each other because they are all tainted by the abyss, as seen from the corruption on the end of the cloak they wear. so the reason they fight each other is because they are attempting to destroy this corruption.

The red eyed ones attack the other abyss watchers, so my theory was that maybe some of them were infected by the abyss, so they are endlessly killing each other. idk this is just my theory.
Hi Vaati. Just wanted to spend a minute and thank you man for fantastic lore videos. I think I watched every single video you made. You don't even know how it inspired me to rerun game over and over again a lot of times. Now then I finally finished DS3 I feel a little bit confused of endings DS3 gives you. It feels that our protagonist cannot break the cycle, and the last fight just push it to your face, how many people reach the end, but the result remains the same. It is so similar to DS1 - we have light ending, dark ending. Though betrayal ending looks unusual. I do hope so much, that DLC will finally change the framework of this world. Looking forward to your lore/endings explained video.
They attack the Watcher with RED EYES, because he's corrupted by the Abyss. Notice they don't attack each other during the fight, only the ones with RED EYES. Red eyes has always been abyss corruption.
Vaati, this is a strange request but I wanted your opinion on something I gave some thought about onion bro and Solaire. This might be reaching but I find Yhorm to be interesting with not much known about his past and why Siegward has a Storm Ruler as it was given to a dear friend to slay him incase he went insane. Well Yhorm obviously as a giant must be incredibly old and much older than Siegward would be. On his machete it reads that he once brandished a shield however after he failed to protect a friend he tossed it aside and added a notch to his blade. My theory is that the storm ruler ended up into the hands Siegmeyer from Dark souls 1. The lords of cinders are champions who once linked the flame. You can do the quest line with Solaire all the way up to Gwyn leading most to believe that he succeeded. He achieved grossly incandescence and came back as a Lord. He gave a storm ruler to Siegmeyer which was past down through generations to Siegward and he tossed his shield aside possibly when failing to protect Siegmeyer. They're both pretty jolly guys so why wouldn't it make sense that they may have met in Dark Souls 1 and this is why we have the battle between Siegward and Yhorm to uphold his duty.
Hey Vaati. I'm sure you probably already know this but on the Dark Souls wiki, the Nameless King is actually Lord Gwyn's firstborn, not Solaire and Ornstein was the first to train under him. The Warriors of Sunlight are also known as HIS warrior, so it sort've explains how he's so powerful, uses lightning, and is a powerhouse of a boss
+Trevor Smith I wouldn't cite something based on what the wiki says but more appropriately the evidence which led to that assumption being made. - His swordspear describes him as the heir to lightning, which is always very closely tied to Gwyn as it is his weapon of choice and used as a symbol of light and fire. - His curved sword states that he was around in the age of the gods/lords and fought along side the everlasting dragons. This places him as a being old enough to be the son of Gwyn as well as explaining why he would be disowned by him and stripped of his revered status. There was always a lot of question as to what would drive Gwyn to disavow his firstborn, and siding with the dragons makes perfect sense. (And it places him as a foil to Seath) - His soul states that he was once a dragon-slaying "god of war", but sacrificed everything to ally himself with the dragons, which perfectly fits the narrative of Gwyn's firstborn and the story we've constructed. The firstborn is literally stated in his ring's description to have been "a god of war, until he was stripped of his stature". - His title once his stormdrake is dead and it can no longer define his identity is "nameless" king. It certainly serves to explain how important that drake is that it defined his identity, but it raises the question of how he came to have no name before finding the drake. Gwyn's children, (Gwynevere, Gwyndolin) took on his name, so to be disowned by him is not just to lose your status but also your name. - The description on Great Lightning Spear states that the firstborn wields a greatspear that upholds gwyn's tradition of slaying dragons with a spear of lightning, which matches up with nameless king being a former dragonslayer and also wielding a massive spear which harnesses lightning.

Solaire did wield lighting and was undead just like the nameless king. The nameless kings swordspear also is the same weapon seen wielded by the warrior of sunlight at the altar throughout the soul series
+Thomas Fitzpatrick I was also going to mention that as well. In the souls series two "separate" characters in different games are not always so separate. For example, Eygon and Lautrec of Carim. The firstborn of Gwyn is, after all, the aspiration of the Warriors of Sunlight.
I think the Abyss Watchers are a reference to Nietzsche's Beyond Good And Evil aphorism: "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
i really enjoyed how you brung the game and lore together. been hawkwood is talking while your lighting the flames etc and at the thrones viewing the ashes.
A pretty popular theory going around is that the Abyss Watchers continued in their original duties after becoming a collective Lord of Cinder, and headed towards the catacombs of Carthus to combat and seal the spread of the Abyss there. However, as they struggled to contain the abyss, several of their members were corrupted by the abyss and given the characteristic glowing red eyes we see in so many other enemies with abyssal tendencies. In the end, they were forced to seal all of themselves off in the room, with the dwindling sane ones constantly fighting to put their corrupted brethren to peace. You as the Ashen One likely came upon them just as the last sane Abyss Watcher dispatched the last of his brothers/sisters.
my interpretation of the unkindled is that it's not just one person reborn kindling, but rather someone just formed of the ashes of other's a new form of being who is hollow inside, not just in mind
I think that the reason the Abyss Watchers are fighting themselves is because the corruption got them. Notice that the two Watchers who don't fight each other have normal eyes, while the 3rd one that rises has glowing red eyes, meaning that, in their quest to guard the Abyss, it eventually got to them, and they are killing the corrupted ones in an all means to an end duty. And for the fact that during the 2nd stage the boss has also red glowing eyes, I dare say it is because he gathers powers from all the Watchers, and few of those who died were corrupted.
It's also interesting that after visiting Archdragon Peak and fighting the Havel Knight by a dead dragon, you can find the Havel set on the same bridge as the stray demon along with the other 'dragonslayer' items.
My theory is that when the Abyss Watchers became hollow, they found each other a threat to the containment of the abyss, and are constantly fighting and killing each other. Of course, they’re mad, but the only driving force they have left is to protect the containment of the abyss, so they endlessly try to protect it by killing each other. Also, the Old Wolf Curved Sword weapon art is a clear reference to sif's attacks (the upwards slash while jumping backwards and the quick sweeping slash before quickly retreating)
I have only been watching up to the point im at in the game, ive gone through the cathedral of the deep, and defeated the abyss watchers, it's cool to see you find thing I've missed as I'm not a huge item collector. I find myself coming back to learn the lore that i'm missing out on, keep up the good work.
Points worth mentioning: 1: The three flame alters each have a carving of something significant on them. Their is a great tree, which could be the Bed of Chaos or the Curserotten Greatwood, a mound of skeletons that could be Lord Wolnir or Nito, and what looks like four lords standing together...or perhaps Four Kings? 2: The Abyss Watcher that fights the other two has glowing red eyes, while the others in stage one do not raise a hand against each-other. Perhaps some of them have since ironically, become tainted by the Abyss it's hard to say. They are right before an area with an Abyss-residing boss after all.
I've always wondered what the Souls-worlds looked like at their peak before everything went to s**t ya know. It'd be cool to see the Avyss Watchers at their full might with a full army.

I like to think it's Sif as it's unclear whether the wolf is alive or not? It could be the reclaimed corpse of the wolf drained of its blood and sort of mummified and that is why it appears smaller, sickly and thin.
I always figured that the Abyss Watchers fighting amongst themselves was something to do with the conflict of interest between being a Lord of Cinder and watching over High Lord Wolnir in the Catacombs below, probably with the red-eyed watcher wishing to become a lord of cinder again (possibly being the "main" abyss watcher, the carrier of the soul) whereas the other two you fight are keeping him down so that they can continue their original duty. Then, in the second phase, the wolfs blood is collected into the soul-carrying watcher with the sole purpose of slaying you.
Something interesting I figured out about Hawkwood: If you fight him at Firelink Shrine, he has his shield, but when you fight him after he returns to the Abyss Watchers' boss room (during the dragon questline), he wields the Abyss Watcher greatsword and dagger combo. Hope this helps, in some way.

I personally believe that the reason as to why Farron was at war within itself is because perhaps some saw their duty as lords of cinder. That they wanted to link the flame. Whereas the others did not. And so, they fought.

Hey man I can't stop watching your videos, Im a new fan of dark souls and the 3 is my first but I've been watching all your vids to catch up with the lore
I like to think that the Undead Legion were arguing over whether to return to their Thrones or not and that the camp was split. The red-eyed Watcher who aids you in the fight rose up because he sees your fight as an opportunity to do what was right and not just wither into dust.
My idea on the reason that they were fighting "themselves" is that the Abyss Watchers, like the Abyss Walker, had become tainted by the Abyss itself, denoted by the red eyes the "mad" Watcher has. This can then be seen in the embered version of the boss as well.
My theory on why the Abyss Watchers fight each other is that after combining their souls to link the fire, one body containing their shared soul was contaminated with the abyss. so this has just locked them into a constant state of killing themselves.
I think the Abyss Watchers fighting themselves is linked to the one who's Abyss Touched- the one with glowing red eyes. I think in the Abyss Watchers unyielding pursuit of destroying anything abyss touched, it somehow drew some of the abyss into itself, and the other members now hunt it relentlessly, even though it resurrects endlessly much like the watchers themselves. When the Unkindled enters the chamber of the Abyss Watchers, we're seeing the Abyss touched one fall, only for it to rise again during the boss fight to continue it's feud.
On the Abysswatchers fighting each other: there are three total, two normal ones, and one with red eyes. The normal ones don’t actually fight each other, but when the red eye one rises, the other two team up to put him down. My interperetation of this is that one by one, the abysswatchers fell to the abyss as did Artorias, and they put down each abyss consumed watcher by killing them over and over again until they could not rise any longer, explaining why there are only three left, one of which has now turned, and they have locked themselves away in this mausoleum to kill each other in a final act of defiance against the inevitable spreading of the Abyss. When you enter, you can see them doing this, but you put down the last of the sane ones in the first stage, allowing the still living Abyss consumed one (the red eye one) to inherit the power of its brethren and the wolf’s blood, ending permanently the Abysswatchers. Fortunately for the world, you kill this final one and take his ashes away to the throne so that he cannot spread the Abyss. It is also possible that this had begun happening before they were lords of cinder, and had chosen to link the flames in order to purge themselves of the Abyss, which is why they refused to come a second time, and instead locked themselves away in a mausoleum.

Definitely a different take on a playthrough fitting of this series. It's like we're being told a story as opposed to being subjected to the mindless chatter and childish screaming that usually accompanies other TH-camrs' playthroughs/Let's Plays. Vaati actually seems to care more about the game and lore rather than getting audience reactions to his overreactions.

Recently when i tried to continue playing my character, the game said something like ''the latest files is corrupted, delete them to continue'' so i did. My whole save is now removed, but is there anything i can do to restore it?
Now that you officially know the context of what an Unkindled is... It's really sad. Damn Miyazaki. To reach the Kiln and attempt the linking of the Flame, only to be incompatible and burn to ash in the process... That's rough man. Hawkwood's opening dialogue with your character makes even more sense in this context now. "Can't even die right..."
Yeah...thinking about all the shit that you put your character through to get there and to link the flame. To be the one to get all the way down there, went through all of that only to have the Kiln reject your ember. It's a giant middle finger, "Nope sorry you're not the chosen one...fuck you." annnnnd then after being put through that, the person who already was rejected from kindling the flame the first go around, is brought back to life and basically told, "Well it turns out we need you anyways....so you get to do it all over again and hope it doesn't reject you this go around." That's just a soul crushing dauntless task if you ask me. No wonder so many refused to do it. Turned away from purpose and went hollow or killed themselves. I don't blame them whatsoever....and with that in mind, my dude is a mad man for wanting to do it all over again.
And that is why we choose the End of Fire ending.

@@StudlyFudd13 Well, the Flame didn't really reject you. That's not really how it works. The reason you don't become a Lord of Cinder is because you are not strong enough and burn too fast. And so you turn to Ash. And you don't necessarily remember the previous cycle exactly. You may have a general memory, but the "Champion" memories are kinda erased. At least that's the case with us, the MC. Like... The MC doesn't really have a personality and doesn't talk. Like...The only reason why we're so obscure may be either because the flame erases the memory of the Champion cycle, or because our case is special and there is some other reason for not having a backstory, maybe it was cut out for the sake the RPG character diversity.
The best theory about the Abyss Watchers' infighting that I've heard is that some of them became infected by The Abyss after fighting with it for so long, and so every time those infected watchers are revived, the others will kill them instantly to keep The Abyss from spreading. I think most people got this idea because some of them have red, glowing eyes and others don't.
Yeah, monsters with red eyes tend to be affected by the abyss that turns people into black goop monsters. The abyss watchers with red eyes attack the other abyss watchers while the still sane ones are trying to attack you
not just some members of legion but all that goat demon hybrid type creatures protecting watchers from intruders which video is saying was acolytes of legion look exactly like abyss infected natives in city of oolacile so it makes sense that both region and legion is infected
So in a way the abyss watchers that locked themselves up were doing a good thing
I always underestimate how long these Lorethrough videos take to make.
If this one doesn't get a great response, I miiiight come back to them later. I'll be honest - they're tiring to work on because it's like writing an essay instead of a short story, if that makes sense. The videos I like to watch are succinct, entertaining, and don't waste your time..but with Lorethrough I go in-depth on EVERY aspect of an area - whether it's entertaining or not. As a result, they're a bit more.."soulless" than something like "lore: explained" or "prepare to cry".
However - they bring out just how much detail there is in the game..and they're a documentation of the huuuuge notes document I have on every item description / area of the game, so I also think they're important to make!
So if I do take a break with these - I think i'll come back to them after I have all the really entertaining videos done.

About the Abyss Watcher that "helps" you in the fight: he has red eyes.
My theory is that he's been consumed by the abyss, and the other watchers are fighting him to stop the spread of the contamination.
Once you beat the first phase all of the blood is absorbed by one of the watcher, and in the cutscene you see him assuming a sort of "wild" pose, in contrast with the respectful and dignified pose with which you are greeted at the beggining of the fight. This might suggest that the abyss is finally taking over.
Why did you stop doing this Lore Through series? I would love to see you pick up where this video leaves off and continue through the rest of the game explaining the Lore.

He explains this at the end of the episode, the lorethrough series became other videos like Lore of the Bosses, Soulssong, and the more in-depth character series Prepare-to-Cry.
As for the exact why I'm not sure, as I enjoyed the walkthrough style of these videos as well, but Vaati always enjoyed looking at the story as a whole in his videos instead of this piece-by-piece fashion so I'm sure that has something to do with it. He covered the abyss in other videos like he promised he would at the end of this video, on top of the fact that everything that could be covered in the next part of this series has been covered to death by both him and other channels so he probably saw the lorethrough series as a waste of time.
Not my opinion, but my best educated guess as I would love to see him return to this.
You bring up some good points. In the end I agree that he wanted to do more of an overarching series than a play thru explanation run.
It is a shame, he did these videos nearly blind as he had an early access copy of the game due to the success of the channel. I try to watch his videos and learn as much about the game as possible, but every time I play through the game I forget bits and pieces and the true lore of the world sometimes goes right over my head. It would be fascinating to see Vaati do the walkthrough now given all that we have learned about the game up to this point in time.
But alas, I'm sure he has other projects he is devoting his time to, so this probably won't happen.
He does this a lot, barely ever finishes what he starts which is annoying for people contributing to him being able to do it.

The Abysswatchers are attacking some of them because the ones whit red eyes are corrupted by the abyss. You can see that the ones whit normal eyes don't attack the boss, only the red eyed ones do

Dunno if Vaati actually reads the comments, but here's what I think is going on:
The Profaned Capital was hit hard with the Abyss, so much so that Wolnir and Yhorm seem consumed by it. The Profaned capital is one of the only things we see utterly buried. My theory is that the Abyss Watchers buried the profaned capital for it's connection to the Abyss, and ended up finding it again in the Catacombs of Carthus. They sealed the catacombs but due to exposure the 3rd Watcher became corrupted by the Abyss and led to the in-fighting. Hence why they guard the only entrance to the Catacombs and Irithyll that we know about.

You can see the inside and it looks to be the reason the fire keeper sees stuff like a world without fire and all that stuff when you give her eyes.

The editing in these videos are so amazing. The way you fit the voices of npc's to link it to what the npc may be talking about or to make their words have more weight is really smart and awesome.
So I was making an Artorias build and I thought to myself, "doesn't his Greatsword have a sort of boosted effect against a certain type of enemies?" I went online and checked that it deals more damage against "*Abyssal foes*". "Just what the hell are abyssal foes?"- I thought.
One thing that i read about in a forum is how apparently those are the ones that have glowing red eyes. And later on in the forum a guy mentioned one of the most interesting things: Within the Abyss Watchers fight, there will be a crazied Abyss Watcher who will fight against the others. That one has red eyes. It is an *Abyssal Abyss Watcher*. Maybe the reason that they went mad is because they all share the same blood of the wolf and by having it tainted by the Abyss, they started to hunt themselves, that's what we find when we go inside their arena, an Abyss Watcher just slayed his corrupted companion, but as they share the same soul, so long as one of them stands they'll keep coming back.
But why are they guarding that place in specific? Well, because Wolnir, the giant skeleton, *IS* also an Abyssal enemy, who was corrupted himself by the Abyss. I am wondering however, and this is the important bit: What shape does the abyss take in this game? how does it appear?
As a side note, have you noticed how the Sword of Avowal, and the Crucifixes of Crucifixion Woods are extremely similar? And they all also resemble the Blade of the Darkmoon? And that we sacrifice that "one person" with the Sword of Avowal in a very special place that concerns the Blades of the Darkmoon?
And to top it all off, what are the Jailers in Irythil Dungeon wielding? A Soldering Iron with the a symbol of the crucifixes.
Just food for thought. :p

Great video, Vaati! Small thing: I think the Abyss Watchers are fighting themselves because they're contaminated by the Abyss. The Catacombs of Carthus, which are connected to the room where you fight them, are contaminated, their ruler residing in the Abyss itself and the Grave Wardens developing Dark Pyromancies. I believe this is why the Watchers were in this particular room in the first place: so they could fight the Abyss back should the Catacombs begin to "leak."
Now let's just take a brief moment to touch on the significance of glowing red eyes in relation to the Abyss. The gooey Abyss Monsters that burst out of I. Gundyr and various hollows have red eyes, Bloatheads had red eyes, manus had red eyes, hell, Darkwraithes, who are born of the Dark, use RED EYE Orbs to invade.
Now let's look at the Watcher that is hostile to the others. What unique characteristic does go possess? Glowing Red Eyes.
Of course that's just a theory, but it's the most likely reason I can come up with.

It's interesting to note that the only Abyss Watchers who turn on the other ones have glowing red eyes. It's possible that the Watchers are trying tirelessly to purge their ranks of Abyssal corruption. Given the pile of bodies littering the boss chamber, it's pretty clear how well that's going.
I just stumbled across this because I began searching for Abyss Watcher lore, after becoming a bit fascinated with them again. Damn, you have got a great voice, and your presentation is fantastic.

Wow, I can't believe how From manages to sneak so much lore in the game while saying as little as possible. All the lore is there, you just have to be really perceptive and it all clicks together perfectly. I love how the community is figuring out the fine points in a team effort.
The undead legion is not just killing eachother randomly, they are killing eachother because some of them become corrupted by the abyss, and you can see that because they got red eyes.

It is my belief that the reason the Abyss Watchers are fighting each-other is something else entirely. Through-out the Souls games we have seen that the insane and/or the hollowed will continue to follow some patterns. Knights will still guard areas, hollowed sorcerers still cast spells, and so on.
So what are the Abyss Watchers doing?
Well, the Abyss Watcher duty was to cull all signs of the abyss and it's afflictions upon the world with extreme prejudice. But, having become a Lord of Cinder and hollowed, it is arguable that each Abyss Watcher would rise from death, turn to see another Abyss Watcher (now corrupt, hollowed) and carry on the duty that carried them in life.
In a way, it seems as if the Abyss Watchers are continuing to perform their duty eternally upon each-other, each of them ignorant of their own state, as is tell-tale of both hollowing and corruption in most cases. Would also explain the desertion of those who had not yet partaken of the Wolf's Blood, as well as the Abyss Watchers ceasing to leave the realm to hunt for signs of the Abyss, as they were constantly turning and finding the Abyss right beside them, essentially locking them into place.
The 'Final Reward' for Lordship, as Hawkwood puts it, would be the player character putting an end to this other-wise endless cycle, and allowing the tired and well-respected souls of the Abyss Watchers to finally have rest. This would, too, make sense as to why Hawkwood questions why this is to be their final reward, as everyone will one day receive this reward; therefor, what true reward awaits you for the sacrificial act of linking the flame? If followed from this logic, it even fortifies why Hawkwood left, why he stayed away, and a good portion of why he is so crestfallen.
If this is all true, in a way, his shield (which set him apart and shamed him amidst the group he aspired to become a member of), shielded him from the same fate.
Just my theory, but I rather like it.

The abyss watcher you fight first in the room, my understanding is that he is still sane and the fighting we hear outside, is him killing off the undead time after time. You walk in and he turns to attack you, as you risk unleashing the abyss, thats when all the other watchers rise up and attack you, except others rise up still insane, but go after the first watcher, thinking he will unleash the abyss. A endless cycle.
It's not the best of theory's but, its one I rather like.

Please dont stop making videos. If it's not too difficult I'd love this series to continue similar to how you had a playthrough of Dark Souls 2 focused on the lore and the world, and I think other people would love that too.

+Xerxes Break I don't see why it necessarily is related to the painted world beyond the way in which Anor Londo was already related to the it; Anor Londo in the first game was in a valley not dissimilar from where it's situated in 3, the massive walls and the fact that the buildings are insanely tall gave the impression you were up in the mountains, but that's actually not the case. More to the point, had a city below the massive cathedral area we explore that we never got to visit, in my opinion, we finally got to do that. Hell, we might have already done that if you buy into the theory that Elleum Loyce was on the same site as Anor Londo.

Xerxes Break It's visually not the same doll as the one found in the first game. Perhaps its the same sort of magic that made the painted world sealed by the doll, which seems to be supported by the fact that Aldritch apparently had some dreams about Priscilla (or Yorksha) while eating Gwyndilon.
Xerxes Break Also, there's the implication from the corvian monsters you fight along the road of sacrifices that things ended up escaping from the painting world. Possibly up to and including Priscilla.

VaatiVidya, I have a question for you. Had anyone mentioned the depictions/hieroglyphics found in front of the three fires you put out before unlocking the door to the Farron Keep?
I haven't heard anyone finding it yet (and I haven't checked dswiki), but these depictions are the great souls who ushered in the Age of Fire.
One fire is represented by a giant amalgamation of skeletons (Gravelord Nito).
Another fire is of a woman with smaller figures with staffs below her (The Witch of Izalith and her daughters of Chaos).
And the last fire depicts four figures (Perhaps Gwyn and his royal family; I doubt it's the four kings, because these three flames represent the three founders of the Age of Fire) If the four figures do represent Gwyn and his kin, then they could be him, Gwynevere, the Nameless King, and a mother who had never been mentioned before (Gwyndolin wouldn't be among them since his existence was kept a secret).
Where the fire is placed within these altars imply the figures wielded the first flame

+Gunawan Wibisono There are always three: Their leader, the "real" boss, then a normal one fighting alongside the leader and a red-eyed one that will attack the other watchers but can also fight against you. For this theory I'd say the red-eyed one is corrupted, since red eyes were always considered to be a sign of some kind of corruption.

I believe they are fighting because they are being corrupted by the abyss, after all the boss doesn't fight every Abysswatcher rising, just the ones with red eyes, so there's something about them, and thinking about what was their duty the red eyes being a symbol for the abyss seems quite a reasonable thesis.
And red eyed enemies in the game are usually also coupled with darker clothing and stronger attacks, just to add onto the abyss theory.
Imagine waking up from your grave and fighting members of your own group, your friends, who have been corrupted by the very thing you spent your life fighting. And they just don't stay dead. Meanwhile your wolf's blood, the source of your strength, is dwindling. It'd be enough to drive you mad.
I believe that the reason why the Abyss Watchers are caught killing each other when you meet them could be directly linked to their purpose and fate. One thing that every enemy in the souls series has in common is that no matter how withered they became or how insane they turned out to be, they always established a presence towards the player which showcased who they were. This is evident in how you fight a variety of hollows in lothric castle who, although have lost themselves, still retain some skills related to the occupation they had, (ie crossbow hollows actually know how to reload a crossbow, shielded hollows keep their shield up and attack with spears, and the knights fight with discipline)
As for the Abyss Watchers, you have to keep in mind that they were completely and unrelentingly dedicated to keeping the abyss from spreading in any way, shape and form, even going as far as to end entire kingdoms to do so. Now one thing to keep in mind is their location, which happens to be right next to the carthus ruins which is a place that had been heavily influenced by the abyss that is described as "the deep" in the game.
The deep (AKA the abyss) is described as something that was once a pure entity that would end up becoming the resting grounds of demons and monsters. It is also described as an entity that isnt malevolent but happens to corrupt by just being present. Think about it, the carthus kingdom which would be corrupted by the deep, which is an entity that corrupts just by being there, would be watched eternally by the watchdogs of farron, who happened to be in the presence of the deep. You see what may have happened?
The watchdogs suffered the same fate as the cathedral of the deep, and being that they were dedicated to eradicating any evidence of the abyss, they would tear each other apart in order to prevent the spread, as was their duty. They would continue to do this, even as they locked themselves away in order to contain the legion. Even after they themselves had withered away, becoming a hollow husk of their former selves, they would still perform their duties as it is the legacy that they left behind for themselves, and they would tear each other up, over and over and over again until you, the player, come to end their suffering.

I think that the non-red eyed Watchers are fairly sane (as they don't fight each other) but the red-eyed watchers have hollowed. Perhaps after burning in the kiln, they aren't in a rush to get back, even sane, and just want to be laid to rest where they feel they belong.

Can't remember what video I saw it on but there impression was the abyss watchers are killing each other because they are all tainted by the abyss, as seen from the corruption on the end of the cloak they wear. so the reason they fight each other is because they are attempting to destroy this corruption.

Just wanted to spend a minute and thank you man for fantastic lore videos. I think I watched every single video you made. You don't even know how it inspired me to rerun game over and over again a lot of times.
Now then I finally finished DS3 I feel a little bit confused of endings DS3 gives you. It feels that our protagonist cannot break the cycle, and the last fight just push it to your face, how many people reach the end, but the result remains the same. It is so similar to DS1 - we have light ending, dark ending. Though betrayal ending looks unusual. I do hope so much, that DLC will finally change the framework of this world.

They attack the Watcher with RED EYES, because he's corrupted by the Abyss. Notice they don't attack each other during the fight, only the ones with RED EYES. Red eyes has always been abyss corruption.
Vaati, this is a strange request but I wanted your opinion on something I gave some thought about onion bro and Solaire. This might be reaching but I find Yhorm to be interesting with not much known about his past and why Siegward has a Storm Ruler as it was given to a dear friend to slay him incase he went insane. Well Yhorm obviously as a giant must be incredibly old and much older than Siegward would be. On his machete it reads that he once brandished a shield however after he failed to protect a friend he tossed it aside and added a notch to his blade. My theory is that the storm ruler ended up into the hands Siegmeyer from Dark souls 1. The lords of cinders are champions who once linked the flame. You can do the quest line with Solaire all the way up to Gwyn leading most to believe that he succeeded. He achieved grossly incandescence and came back as a Lord. He gave a storm ruler to Siegmeyer which was past down through generations to Siegward and he tossed his shield aside possibly when failing to protect Siegmeyer. They're both pretty jolly guys so why wouldn't it make sense that they may have met in Dark Souls 1 and this is why we have the battle between Siegward and Yhorm to uphold his duty.

Hey Vaati. I'm sure you probably already know this but on the Dark Souls wiki, the Nameless King is actually Lord Gwyn's firstborn, not Solaire and Ornstein was the first to train under him. The Warriors of Sunlight are also known as HIS warrior, so it sort've explains how he's so powerful, uses lightning, and is a powerhouse of a boss

more appropriately the evidence which led to that assumption being made.
- His swordspear describes him as the heir to lightning, which is always very closely tied to Gwyn as it is his weapon of choice and used as a symbol of light and fire.
- His curved sword states that he was around in the age of the gods/lords and fought along side the everlasting dragons. This places him as a being old enough to be the son of Gwyn as well as explaining why he would be disowned by him and stripped of his revered status. There was always a lot of question as to what would drive Gwyn to disavow his firstborn, and siding with the dragons makes perfect sense. (And it places him as a foil to Seath)
- His soul states that he was once a dragon-slaying "god of war", but sacrificed everything to ally himself with the dragons, which perfectly fits the narrative of Gwyn's firstborn and the story we've constructed. The firstborn is literally stated in his ring's description to have been "a god of war, until he was stripped of his stature".
- His title once his stormdrake is dead and it can no longer define his identity is "nameless" king. It certainly serves to explain how important that drake is that it defined his identity, but it raises the question of how he came to have no name before finding the drake. Gwyn's children, (Gwynevere, Gwyndolin) took on his name, so to be disowned by him is not just to lose your status but also your name.
- The description on Great Lightning Spear states that the firstborn wields a greatspear that upholds gwyn's tradition of slaying dragons with a spear of lightning, which matches up with nameless king being a former dragonslayer and also wielding a massive spear which harnesses lightning.

Solaire did wield lighting and was undead just like the nameless king. A pretty popular theory going around is that the Abyss Watchers continued in their original duties after becoming a collective Lord of Cinder, and headed towards the catacombs of Carthus to combat and seal the spread of the Abyss there. However, as they struggled to contain the abyss, several of their members were corrupted by the abyss and given the characteristic glowing red eyes we see in so many other enemies with abyssal tendencies. In the end, they were forced to seal all of themselves off in the room, with the dwindling sane ones constantly fighting to put their corrupted brethren to peace. You as the Ashen One likely came upon them just as the last sane Abyss Watcher dispatched the last of his brothers/sisters.
my interpretation of the unkindled is that it's not just one person reborn kindling, but rather someone just formed of the ashes of other's a new form of being who is hollow inside, not just in mind
I think that the reason the Abyss Watchers are fighting themselves is because the corruption got them. Notice that the two Watchers who don't fight each other have normal eyes, while the 3rd one that rises has glowing red eyes, meaning that, in their quest to guard the Abyss, it eventually got to them, and they are killing the corrupted ones in an all means to an end duty. And for the fact that during the 2nd stage the boss has also red glowing eyes, I dare say it is because he gathers powers from all the Watchers, and few of those who died were corrupted.

It's also interesting that after visiting Archdragon Peak and fighting the Havel Knight by a dead dragon, you can find the Havel set on the same bridge as the stray demon along with the other 'dragonslayer' items.
My theory is that when the Abyss Watchers became hollow, they found each other a threat to the containment of the abyss, and are constantly fighting and killing each other. Of course, they’re mad, but the only driving force they have left is to protect the containment of the abyss, so they endlessly try to protect it by killing each other. That is why they attack the unkindled, and each other in the same fight.

Also, the Old Wolf Curved Sword weapon art is a clear reference to sif's attacks (the upwards slash while jumping backwards and the quick sweeping slash before quickly retreating)

I have only been watching up to the point im at in the game, ive gone through the cathedral of the deep, and defeated the abyss watchers, it's cool to see you find thing I've missed as I'm not a huge item collector. I find myself coming back to learn the lore that i'm missing out on, keep up the good work.
Points worth mentioning:
1: The three flame alters each have a carving of something significant on them. Their is a great tree, which could be the Bed of Chaos or the Curserotten Greatwood, a mound of skeletons that could be Lord Wolnir or Nito, and what looks like four lords standing together...or perhaps Four Kings?
2: The Abyss Watcher that fights the other two has glowing red eyes, while the others in stage one do not raise a hand against each-other. Perhaps some of them have since ironically, become tainted by the Abyss it's hard to say. They are right before an area with an Abyss-residing boss after all.
I've always wondered what the Souls-worlds looked like at their peak before everything went to s**t ya know. It'd be cool to see the Avyss Watchers at their full might with a full army.

I like to think it's Sif as it's unclear whether the wolf is alive or not? It could be the reclaimed corpse of the wolf drained of its blood and sort of mummified and that is why it appears smaller, sickly and thin.
I always figured that the Abyss Watchers fighting amongst themselves was something to do with the conflict of interest between being a Lord of Cinder and watching over High Lord Wolnir in the Catacombs below, probably with the red-eyed watcher wishing to become a lord of cinder again (possibly being the "main" abyss watcher, the carrier of the soul) whereas the other two you fight are keeping him down so that they can continue their original duty. Then, in the second phase, the wolfs blood is collected into the soul-carrying watcher with the sole purpose of slaying you.
When next episode?
Something interesting I figured out about Hawkwood: If you fight him at Firelink Shrine, he has his shield, but when you fight him after he returns to the Abyss Watchers' boss room (during the dragon questline), he wields the Abyss Watcher greatsword and dagger combo.

I like to think that the Undead Legion were arguing over whether to return to their Thrones or not and that the camp was split. The red-eyed Watcher who aids you in the fight rose up because he sees your fight as an opportunity to do what was right and not just wither into dust.
My idea on the reason that they were fighting "themselves" is that the Abyss Watchers, like the Abyss Walker, had become tainted by the Abyss itself, denoted by the red eyes the "mad" Watcher has. This can then be seen in the embered version of the boss as well.

My theory on why the Abyss Watchers fight each other is that after combining their souls to link the fire, one body containing their shared soul was contaminated with the abyss. so this has just locked them into a constant state of killing themselves.
I think the Abyss Watchers fighting themselves is linked to the one who's Abyss Touched- the one with glowing red eyes. I think in the Abyss Watchers unyielding pursuit of destroying anything abyss touched, it somehow drew some of the abyss into itself, and the other members now hunt it relentlessly, even though it resurrects endlessly much like the watchers themselves. When the Unkindled enters the chamber of the Abyss Watchers, we're seeing the Abyss touched one fall, only for it to rise again during the boss fight to continue it's feud.
On the Abysswatchers fighting each other: there are three total, two normal ones, and one with red eyes. The normal ones don’t actually fight each other, but when the red eye one rises, the other two team up to put him down. My interperetation of this is that one by one, the abysswatchers fell to the abyss as did Artorias, and they put down each abyss consumed watcher by killing them over and over again until they could not rise any longer, explaining why there are only three left, one of which has now turned, and they have locked themselves away in this mausoleum to kill each other in a final act of defiance against the inevitable spreading of the Abyss. When you enter, you can see them doing this, but you put down the last of the sane ones in the first stage, allowing the still living Abyss consumed one (the red eye one) to inherit the power of its brethren and the wolf’s blood, ending permanently the Abysswatchers. Fortunately for the world, you kill this final one and take his ashes away to the throne so that he cannot spread the Abyss. It is also possible that this had begun happening before they were lords of cinder, and had chosen to link the flames in order to purge themselves of the Abyss, which is why they refused to come a second time, and instead locked themselves away in a mausoleum.
