It certainly did brighten up a dull day; thanks guys; what a dream team! I don't know if you noticed, but just past the tent, underneath the first tree was a jeep. I am pretty sure that I saw RC sitting in there with a bottle of something just shaking his head slowly from side to side...

One of the specifications for the ATF Program that begat the F-22 was the ability to take off from short fields. I worked at P&W during the engine/nozzle development and was present for a test run of one of the early prototypes. They ran it full burner for a few seconds, then pitched the nozzle full up, then down, then back to level all happening in just a couple more seconds. The object here was to point the nose upward before the control surfaces had enough airspeed and pointing the nozzle up would push the tail and lever the nose up on the main gear. Then the nozzle pointed down to push the aircraft off of the ground then level again for normal flight.
I don't know if this feature is still incorporated into current F-22 flight systems but it would make sense if it were just in case they someday need to operate off of bombed runways or improvised fields. So long as you don't load the aircraft beyond 1:1 T/W simply pointing the nose skyward is enough for it to fly using thrust alone.

It's the F35B that is capable of short take-off and landing, AKA: STOLV and are primarily intended to operate from aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships as well. However, they could potentially operate from unimproved (dirt/grass, etc) airfields and roads. That said I'm not aware of them having done so. Btw, the F-35 (all three variants) are often unofficially referred to as "Fat Amy" due to their appearance.

You have the city of Dubai in DCS right? Why not make a challenge among the guys, who can land INSIDE the city closest to the Burj Khalifa without damaging the plane? Depends on glide slope. Carrier based aircraft are beefed up to take the g load on landing and for tail hooks. In theory with a long enough stretch of road the glide slope would be the same as an airfield. Major issue is FOD problems with modern designs on takeoff on non prepared roads.

Realistically, a fighter acft, should be able to operate from the roads. Grass or fields not so much. If they had more robust landing gear and wheels, and top mounted engine intakes it could be possible for fields. Its more or less where the intakes are which would pick up fod...

in multiplayer servers you can land behind enemy lines on a road, wait for an enemy jet to fly by and then pop up, take a shot, and drop back down again. Also, you could do a modern version of the Battle of Britain I reckon only with roads instead of fields.

You are kicking up grass, dirt, and other foreign object debris (FOB); which is sucked into the jet engines causing them to explode.
