Love the raw, no cut videos brother! Your channel is therapy for me personally. Long live physical media 👽🛸🍿

Man I love your channel! Ever since I come across your video "The things physical media collectors don't want you to know" and how you talked about how there is always something to collect and there's a fine line between collecting and hoarding you have become my favorite physical media channel 🙂

A recent 4k transfer can look pretty good on DVD using a good player with upscaling.
Only problem I have with DVD for collecting is that the surface gets easily scratched - Blu Ray with their „hardened“ bottom surface is really hard to scratch.
Many people will sit far away from the tv, you dont need hd if you do it.
I like the fact that Blu rays have this hardened coating, good if you buy them pre-owned. But I heard that scratched DVD's will still be playable in most cases if they aren't scratched very badly.
DVD is still important to me for two reasons: firstly, the sentimental factor and secondly, the nostalgia factor. Films like the original Star Wars trilogy are more than enough for me. In this limited DVD edition, it looks good to me.
In the end, it's about the film for me and not about having the best quality if it's not the version I prefer.
Not to forget a good Bluray player can also make the DVD look better.
For me, the days of jumping on a new format are over, especially when it's no longer about the film itself, if we're being honest.
I also have that R1 T2 DVD. Best version/transfer on DVD. It’s also one of the few releases to utilize a DVD-18 (dual layer double sided DVD). The R4 Ben Hur DVD is also a DVD-18 and has the screen tests with Leslie Neilsen as special features, which wasn’t available on Blu Ray.
You're a great storyteller. Most of the series I like are very cheap to buy on DVD. They might be hard to get in the future. Nothing beats physical.
You have my respect. I spent actual years converting my VHSes, DVDs, and BDs to MKV (previously MP4). I have around 1000 discs, about half are TV and the other are movies. AVGN also mentioned how BDs generally have LESS features than DVDs. I compress them a decent amount (about 1/4 of the filesize, but they're usually going from MPEG2 to AVC/MP4).
I thankfully haven't been spoiled by 4K. I don't have a display that supports it and I can't imagine how huge the raw files must be.
Why DVD still exist??
- it's affordable
- most average household doesn't care about quality
- it's easy to own and obtain
- most TV shows are printed on DVD
- average household at least has a DVD player
@ yes but the average person isn’t tech savvy like that or aren’t aware they can do so. I download movies free 4k remux on a 12tb hard drive but i still do collect psychial media
@@blackmetalhead5883 Is it an external hard drive? I am afraid they just stop working inexplicably and I can't get one which is that many TB's.
And u can go anywhere get a dvd
It exits because we like them and collect them. Its like vhs but with clear image and sound, and we just love them💿
DVD is still popular as some people simply just want to own and watch a movie.
Been popular since nineties
I still use a fatback 90's tv for my older video game systems.
Nice ❤
In part ur analysis is quite correct - the proliferation of dvd was adjacent to the units of PS2, and a similar thing happened with PS3 and blu ray.
The main reason however, why dvd is still relevant, is bcos the advent of streaming and VOD compelled the masses to *dump their dvd collections into thrift shops and to charity* , leaving a huge fiscal differential iro regular ppl (casuals) who wanted large phys collections on a budget, contra to those who now only buy 4k discs.
The other factor is that major studios have mostly now abandoned blu ray (in favour of forcing ppl to pay multiple subs each month to watch old stuff) and this has led to a takeover of the market by 'boutique' corps who demand huge price uplifts in order to pay for the costly licenses they buy.
4k imvho is just a hustle, cos human eye can't detect any resolution upscale from 1080, even on a cinema screen - the color/tone/contrast/aliasing fiddling is mainly to obfuscate the fact they are selling you a blu ray all over again but more expensive.
I like buying dvds. I like owning movies and shows I like. Streaming services sometimes remove them when they lose the license or do a tax write off.
As long as it's an aspect ratio that expands to filll the sides of the screen I don't really care, personally. But I still only have a 47 inch 1080p TV. I do always get the Blu-ray if there is an option though over the DVD since the price is typically about the same.
I’m a victim of 4k, but I still by a lot of classic tv shows on DVD.
You’re right on the audio factors too. The Terminator has finally regained its original mono track. Despite all its releases, that hasn’t been heard on home media since the VHS.
It's on my DVD
@ REALLY??? Wow, we go stuffed here in the northern hemisphere. Just the 5.1
I still buy dvds on a regular basic - mostly tv shows that aren't on bluray yet (or I'm not THAT bothered about) but often horror movies i haven't seen, or can get cheap off of Ebay. My favourite movies I've upgraded to bluray, but on the whole I'm still happy with dvd.
I didn't bother with 4k because I know there will be an upgrade to that in the coming years, and I'm perfectly happy with the shiny discs I already have.
Now if the next gen disc will allow me to have the entire Friday The 13th franchise on one disc - and at great quality - then I'm all in.
If you have or you can find the DVD of a movie at least you can still watch the movie AND YOU OWN IT. NOBODY CAN TAKE IT AWAY
Yes. I have DVDs that are over 25 years old. Streaming services will come and go but your physical media will be with you for nearly a lifetime.
Damn it but I miss 📼 videotapes ! Renting them used to be huge business for Hollywood. It was how most people saw movies 🎥 actually.
I miss that big bulky brick! 😢😅
The 3D T600 Terminator box is $200+ USD
Longest content for format spread over time, since 1998 i believe, so the choice in titles on dvd format is incredibly vast, better, cheaper and overall a more fulfilling experience whilst having fun, even more so than any other format even compares
You don't have to rewind a dvd to rewatch and scene skipping, and bonus features helped DVD over vhs
Man you have a talent for this I just watched the whole thing before I realized it 😂 Great video and I subbed
dvds still work for me because i normally watch everything in 360p and 480p on youtube anyways, even though i have a 8k gpu i still choose humble. why? because i dont care and people who care about quality over media consumption are a bit silly you buy something because you want to enjoy it and watch it not because you want to admire every pixel and most people dont rewatch things after watching them for a long time
true
Curious as to why you have a gpu capable of 8k but watch you tube content at 360p. Asking for a friend. I must assume you game having that kind of gpu and game at 360p because you don't care about a better quality image which obviously is totally fine.
@@BillsOldandNewGaming because i dont really care, i cant see very well. the reason i have such a powerful card is to run the newer games.
LOL
Bc dvds still outsold other since 08 & more people dont care about quality
Interesting however, I drive an expensive car because I enjoy the car. I can careless what other people think lol.
thats what it comes down to, what you enjoy and if you enjoy dvds then buy dvd over blu ray
If there is something I'm interested in and it's on Blu Ray as well as DVD then I'll buy it on Blu Ray because it's going to look a little better and in a lot of cases (at least with older releases or 2nd hand) it'll only cost a little bit more than a DVD, so I'll think 'Why not?', just seems like a no brainer to me. But I can still be totally happy with watching even something on VHS.
Not going to bother with 4k though as I don't want to get rid of the TV that I'm already happy with and which has sentimental value to me, and to then spend a load of money on a 4k one, and then buying a 4k player. It just doesn't seem worth it to me just so I can to experience a better picture quality which might not even be that noticeable anyway. Also for all I know maybe SD and HD will look pretty bad on a 4k TV.
I'm totally happy with what I've already got.
DVD is still massive in Australia compared to uk where Blu Ray was adopted a lot earlier.
Australia still sells dvd in supermarkets aswell .
Not everyone had jumped upto a 4k tv
The 4k dts track on jurassic park is phenomenal. I have a pretty high-end home theatre room it’s mind blowing. I’ve also watched the laserdisc dts version and although it’s great, but the 4k is better imo.
I think DVD beat VHS because people had a great experience before with music CDs for years. Then the DVD was a no-brainer and familiar-looking.
Music disc opened up a new market and dvd picked up free marketing 👌 😎
Wish HD dvd continued and actually became the next successor to dvds
Weird that so many charity shops and other shops still sell dvds and some sell vhs tapes and I’m still collecting them today interesting video mate
Because DVDs are awesome! Best home media format of all time.
@@Bibliophilo looks awesome on a 42 inch tv
@peakoil-ko5oq whoa there mr.money bags! 42!? Best we ever had was 32, most were 26! 😂
I heard a conspiracy theory that TV companies are hiring criminals to break into your homes and destroy your old tvs... 😅
thats not true, that would be expensive immoral, how would they know you still had your old tv you purchased who would tell them? the store? what if you resold it if you posted it online would they break the law even more to find where you live and who you are and break into your house destroy a tv and leave? if it came out they would be sued to hell and back, they would lose generations worth of wealth of course they would not do this (but ill hear you out because it does sound like somthing they would do)
can i ask where you get your storage shelves from? i live in Australia lake maq area
Ikea
@@JamieToomeyPresents thank you so much appreciate that
90% of my films are on dvd till 2016 i had a crt tv from the 90s they lasted well hard drives crash and die eventually
It's around because it's *good enough* and it's the cheapest physical format available. Also, DVD players are very common. You can probably find one at most garage sales for 5 bucks or less.
Hey Jamie another awesome video to start off the day! I’ve fallowed you almost when you started. But I haven’t commented cause I didn’t really have anything to say, but today I got something.
This might be slightly off topic given this videos subject.
But I think I’m officially done with digital across the board. (Even though I’m aware there are still some pros to digital)
But!
No joke at the time of this comment. Only last night I went to redownload my Hitman games trilogy, I only need to grab 2 of the 3 cause Blood Money was already on my PS3 hard drive….guess what two games were missing in my downloads… I went and searched on the ps3 psn store, the trilogy pack was there alright, but it was asking me to buy it again for 40 bucks!! What the hell!
I’m already a physical media collector, got healthy amount of movies and games myself, and only went to digital at times if I couldn’t find what I was looking for physically. But now, with what has happened, and there’s been other things removed from other devices I own. I’m just trying to keep this already big message trimmed as much as possible…..but I’m Feck’n DONE with digital.
DVDs pass the "good enough" test for many people, most people just like to watch movies and they don't care what format it's on.
💯
The Japanese are holding on to dvds like it's providing them oxygen, they are the slowest culture to adopt new stuff.
I only keep DVD'S that haven't been released on bluray and also for old animes only. Most bluray anime releases are overpriced, censored or upscale.
They are superior to the internet and crappy streaming
Hollywood pictures is a label from Disney,Dangerous minds whas a huge hit in 95,also in 95 from Hollywood pictures,While you where sleeping and Crimson tide, all 3 passed the 100 million mark at the box office.
Hi there Jamie! What is your favorite Christmas Movie in your collection?
480p upscalled to 720p (really 1366X768p as most 720p "class" sets are that resolution) looks good. Our bedroom TVs are 720p "class" and look fine. We would still have our 1080p 2009 Toshiba if it didn't die.
agreed. my family grandparents only upgraded under pressure from family, we would still have our old 480p tv if we weren't gifted a larger 4k tv
Low end PCs and laptops still use dvd drives
Have you ever showed your whole collection
Yes, there’s a couple of videos showing different parts of the collection
Or u can acknowledge me as your tribal chief ☝️🤙
I collect both dvd and bluray also have picked up some 4k movies but for me I can't tell the difference maybe a little different here and there but nothing for me to upgrade my entire collection
Bluray is good enough on 75" or lower TVs. I regret my 4k buys. 4k doesn't live up to its hype unless you have a massive tv.
They exist because people buy them. I prefer 4k/blu 2 recent titles dvd was all I could find. With one title I'd been hunting for 11 years.
I always buy dvds just can't get myself to fully comit to blu ray or 4k blu rays I rather they abandoned those formats and bring Laserdisc back
agreed
We would be good friends if you lived near me lol you like wrestling and physical media me too 😂
There are different audio formats ok 4k/uhds as well. Instead of dts. It would be dts hd ma (dts hd master audio). Or atmos or dts X. My avr gives this. I got 4 atmos channels above my head. Sounds a hell of a lot better than I ever heard from any dvd. Also dvd resolution is very bad in comparison to UHD's. I think dvds are just for cheapskates who shop at charity shops.
I still think it has to do with SOME people are poor, they can't afford Blurays, and they DEFINITELY can't afford a bluray player, 1080p TVs are cheap/I don't even know if you can get a 1280x720p TV, new anymore, I also think A LOT of people are cheap, obviously 1280x720p looks terrible, compared to 1920x1080p, but if DVD is all you can afford, thats fine, I guess, it has to be fine in that case, because that person can't afford blurays.
I do agree, if your not watching on a 55inch TV/65inch or bigger, 18x9 isn't enough/16x9, is still my favorite aspect ratio, even though all of my TVs are 55inches or bigger, but 18x9 is passable, on a 55inch/65inch TV or bigger.
Like I've said in the past, I buy new blurays, I have a lot of bluray players, I have one 4k player, I'll buy a 4k disk, as long as it comes with a bluray too.
Obviously SOME movies/TV shows don't offer a bluray version/it only has a DVD version, bluray players help with that, with upscaling.
No woke DVDs
DVD is absolutely trash
Only if you're deaf
@clumpyschlipz7571 DVD is for people on a tight budget or extremely cheap
@@peakoil-ko5oq or if you want certian audio tracks
@@peakoil-ko5oq To Live and Die in LA's 4k disc has genuinely awfull audio compared to the DVD
Given you said Trash, I assume you're American and use NTSC format. Australia uses PAL. NTSC has better fps, PAL has better resolution. As a result, PAL DVD's still look half decent (ignoring panning stuttering). Not the greatest, but not "Trash" either.
14:43 Mill Creek set doesn't have the original intro, it's a reedit. From season 4-11, the With Children stamp clang doesn't start in it's original spot. It clangs on Peggy's credit and the later season it clangs on Marcy's credit. While the 1st 3 seasons clangs at the right spot. Mill Creek took the audio intro from the first season and place it on season 4-11, so that's why you hear the song, but the intro is out of place. They didn't go thru the actually transfer and redo the intro, Mill Creek took the audio and copy and paste it to season 4-11, known as a reedit. Currently, if you watch Married with Children on CoziTV, they are airing the correct original broadcast intro of all the seasons, previously when it was on FaveTV, they were airing the Mill Creek version. Here's the FavTV, using the Mill Creek reedit version, it clangs on Peggy's credit. y2u.be/sIS5ILKztgo
