The only thing about using that stuff is that most tire shops are about making money. They will more than likely lie to you and say that your tire can't be repaired because it has fixaflat in it. And then they will try to sale you a new tire. The tires can be repaired. They just have to clean the fixaflat out first. But the guys at tire shops think that most people will believe anything they tell them.

I'm a mom that tried it an hour ago, but it was slow coming out of the can and it wouldn't even go in the tire or inflate it. Only a little went in. So I inflated the tire at the gas station (air has been staying for about 24 hours). I might try to put more fix a flat again now that the tire is inflated.

    2) $30 air pump from Harbor Freight, also in trunk.
    3) Tire plugging kit, in trunk.
    4) Both belts (not timing, though), conditioned, in trunk.
    5) 1.5 ton HF jack for $59, in trunk.
    6) $8 HF breaker bar, slides in to handles of jack.
This, and a small amount of tools, will get you back on the road in 20min or less. Total weight is under 100lbs, including the spare tire and jack.

It works, same happened to me, I had a slow leak and tires were still good and it’s been a year of no leaks. AC stopped blowing cold air, took it to the deal and said I needed a whole new unit will cost around $800. I went to Walmart and bought the AC recharge for $35 dollars and it’s been 4 years since and still blowing cold air. TH-cam is the automotive nightmare and now they’re charging 80 dollars for oil changes.

I have to agree with Scotty on this one! The UK equivalent is "Tyre Weld" and I've used it on three tyres over the past 5 years and all with 100% success rates, and not once did I have to top up any of the treated tyres. One of the tyres in question remained in daily use on my Focus for 2 years and covered over 15,000 miles until I replaced it due to going bald. Over those two years I never once had to top up that tyre.

This stuff should only be used in an emergency/last resort/"junk tire that is soon to be replaced anyway" type situation! I used to work in a tire shop, and this stuff will instantly void the warranty on your tires, and we could not repair tires that had this stuff in them! Not to mention...it makes a huge mess, and is a major PITA to deal with as the tech

Never had much luck with Fix-A-Flat (back in the '80s and '90s), but Slime has kept my tires going even with 2 or 3 nails in them. Only problem was that a lot of it will throw a tire off balance until it is removed. Once, I even got it to seal a sidewall after a few tries. Someday, I'll try sucking some of it out with a vacuum pump once the tire is sealed.
PS: Recently I tried the Slime version of the Fix-A-Flat--style inflator and the tire has not leaked since. So, maybe the current version of Fix-A-Flat is also better than the stuff from the 1990s.

As a les schwab tire employee: Don't use it if you can avoid it! the chemicals are pretty toxic and can be bad for us tire guys! also, if your wheel has a chrome finish, the fix a flat can cause a lot of corrosion on your wheel. it can lead to leaks occurring down the road between the rim and bead of the tire. this can be a headache for both us (tire guys) and you because you have to keep coming back to the shop to get the inner edge of the rim polished and sealed again. just please use in emergency situations only!

Someone told me when using this stuff to drive the vehicle right away on highway to get the fixflat formula to spread evenly inside the tire. if u use it and not drive right away, the stuff will build up at the bottom of the tire and harden. then when u do go drive the vehicle, u may feel your tire thump like its off balanced. has anyone else heard this?

I fixed two leaks in two days with one can of Fix-a-Flat. Both were small. One was due to staple. The other one was due to small screw the spare picked up after I put it on. I used about a quarter can on the spare just to inflate it a little extra and lubricate the bead before I went to the tire store to inflate it. I used the rest of the can later on the other tire,
The next day, after driving home 200 miles I saw the screw in the spare, I yanked it out and saw that there was not a puncture all the way through the tire body. But there was a tiny leak. I decided to drive on it and the residue of the Fix-a-Flat sealed the leak.
Both tires were deemed unrepairable by the tire shop because the punctures were on the outside tread.

  • @spenserrr
    @spenserrr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I'd prefer never to use the stuff, and as others mentioned, mechanics and tire shops hate it. That said, it was my savior last December... I was driving my Tundra from Oregon back home to Alaska, towing a new 12x6 cargo trailer. The whole trip was great, but I ended up puncturing a tire in BC after Muncho lake... 5 degrees farenheit, middle of nowhere, totally alone and a couple hundred miles from anywhere. I had my tools/etc with me, but nothing but fix-a-flat for tire repair. Had to use it... never had before. I caught it just in time when the tire was down below 15psi, and thankfully it worked. I was able to make it the rest of the way to Watson Lake late that night, and the rad older guy at the shop helped me (as in we did it together in true tiny-town Canadian fashion) fix the hole professionally. He showed me what this stuff does to the inside of your tire, and I easily saw why it sucks ass to properly patch it after you've used it. All worked out though!

It does work and pretty well. Make sure you understand that it's only temporary and get the tire fixed ASAP. Also it doesn't hurt to warn the tire shop that you used this stuff as it makes a hell of a mess when the tire is taken off. If it ruins your TPMS sensor, so be it, at least the common ones are now a lot cheaper than dealer stock. Understand this and decide whether it's better to use the spare your car came with. BTW, check the pressure and condition of your spare every so often, just because!

    • @josephm106
      @josephm106 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely! Fix-a-flat is ONLY temporary. I'm a tire tech so I avoid the stuff like the plague because I've seen some nightmare kind of tires come in. Fix-a-flat only works a percentage of the time. Often times people will c9me in with a completely flat tire because their Fix-a-flat failed and they need a new tire because most reputable shops won't repair it.

It's been in that tire for about 6 months now and I did have an incident where the pressure wouldn't hold more than 15 for a day. After refilling it with air twice it still holds 30psi no problem. It's even fine on the highway. I need to replace the tire with my new rims and tires but I have a screwed up lug and can't get the wheel off without some fire or an angle grinder. This stuff is great in a pinch. Don't use it if you want to get the tire patched in the future tho, I've heard that they can't get that stuff out of the tire enough for the patch to adhere properly.

I have a couple of Osage Orange trees (hegeapple, what have your) and when these drop an old branch you get to find out if it's one that's covered in half to inch long thorns or not, the old fashioned way. After cleaning up from a windstorm I had to plug my mower tires, all of them. I only had 17 or so plugs and I had to go get more. Pluggin had been fine for 3 years, every once in a while. Looking at plugs and wondering how many I should get I saw the slime, so I put it in my tires instead. 10 months ago. They still have the same pressure in the tires. I can see throwing a can of Fix a Flat in the emergency kit.

My car came with a device that had this built in compressor thing with “air” and “repair tire” settings. And I guess when I used the repair tire setting, this brown fluid came out. I’m assuming it’s what’s in the fix a flat can.

Be weary of that "TIRE SENSOR SAFE" thing. From my understand it really means "safe for a limited time". Once the stuff sits in your tire for a while it will eventually damage the sensor, you are supposed to use that stuff as a temporary repair to get you down the road and then have the tire patched.
Maybe I'm wrong and things have changed since I looked into it?

I've heard that the fix-a-flat stuff is messy, and the people who go to change the old tire for a new one hate the stuff. Also heard that if the wheel doesn't get cleaned properly after using it, it can cause some sort of damage to the new tire. Any truth to any of that?

In my country, tire shops use this to rescue tires that had a lot of punctures; they use plug kits to fix punctures all the time ( you can ask them to patch it from inside but it's more expensive and time consuming and not all shops offer that)

99% of the time you don't need this anyway for typical nail/screw damage. Just have a 12v portable air pump in your car at all times. Any model will do. Pump up your tire to a little over inflation value and that will safely take you to the nearest tire shop to get a proper patch installed. Don't even try touching the nail/screw that's lodged in there, leave it in.

I keep a large hand operated bicycle tire pump in my trunk, along with a dial-type pressure gauge. Works much better than those small 12 volt pumps, and faster too. And I use those rubber-rope like tire plugs on the flat that I get. Never had a problem fixing tires with those types of plugs.

This stuff is meant for short terms emergencies. If you catch a nail, the tire needs to have the nail removed, patched, and re balanced. But fix a flat does work well for roadside or even off-road quick fixes. I’ve even seen that stuff set the bead on a buggy tire that popped off!

I've never used fix a flat but have used tire slime. Used it once in an old truck tire and it just doesn't work. As someone else said on here, when I took it to a tire shop to get it fixed properly, they charged extra to scrape all that crap out. Have used it in atv tires too, again just doesn't work. The only tire it actually worked in and the only type I would use it in again would be a lawnmower tire.

    A bit off topic:
Can I use diesel oil in gasoline engine?
Car mechanic asked me which "C" ratio (c1,c2,c3..) oil to put, the manual didn't say anything about it (only 5w-30) so he put C3 5w-30. When I came home and made some research, I found out that "C" ratio is for diesel engines...
So should I change the oil again? Or can I use that oil in gasoline engine?
Sorry, I didn't find any video about that.

Most manufacturers are including these fix a flat cans and air compressors instead of spare tires, but they don't help if you get a puncture bigger than a pencil eraser. If your car doesn't come with a spare tire, you can build your own system! You buy a lug wrench, a jack (Maybe a sturdy platform to sit the jack on), and then you can get a wheel, the same size as the original wheels, like a simple steel wheel or a wheel that actually matches the original wheels on your car.

Arvilios same here but I’m starting to see it less and less. Fix a flat sucks bc you have to wash out the tire, get all the water out, dry the inside the tire, wipe off the wheel, then do the flat itself. Our store does flats for free and people obviously abuse it.

We only use this as a last resort for our vehicles.
We were camping once and a can was run over and EXPLODED all over our jeep. We still have spots of that crap. It takes oven cleaner to remove it.
And it can build up in one side of tire and cause balance issues.

Fix a flat saved my ass one night. I had hit a curb and got a flat. The wheel was so rusted it would not come off. I tried everything for hours and even help from friends and strangers stopped to help. Walgreens was on the corner. Fix a flat fixed it in seconds. (I later learned a good way to unstick a rusted tire is to loosen the bolts, and drive the car very short distances, a ft pr 2, front and back and slam on the breaks each time)

What exactly makes it TPMS sensor safe? I thought the whole point in keeping the sensors alive and unclogged is to put nothing but air in it?
Might work well for old cars or aftermarket wheels that don't have TPMS sensors in it, but I still wouldn't trust putting that stuff in the wheel. Pretty sure TPMS sensors aren't waterproof. Also, I've heard about fix-a-flat rusting rims from inside out and damaging the tires.

The ONLY time I would recommend using fixaflat is if you PLAN ON REPLACING THE TIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! This is coming from a technician here. You have no idea how much this stuff ruins the inside of your tire. The stuff its made out of is extremely similar to silicon. Which is the same exact stuff that covers the inner lining on your tire. Whenever a tire is patched, we gotta scrap or buff off the lining of silicon BECAUSEEEEE the glue/ cement used to bond with the patch WONT STICK TO SILICON!!!! SO basically using this stuff almost guarantees us NOT being able to repair the tire properly.
